Personally, I only watch subs because they're the most easily available and I've become a fan of Japanese voice actors. I have made the joke of "subs are better than dubs" before but in all honesty, I know there's absolutely nothing wrong with liking dubs since it's all just preference. My friend, who specifically got me into anime, only watches dubs and I respect that. We shouldn't degrade people whether they prefer subs or dubs, that's just plain stupid.
Agreed. I think it would also be good for people to acknowledge that dissing dubs is completely devaluing the hard work of a lot of people. And none of those people are the people who make a dub bad. Dubbing is very difficult, and translating can be even worse when someone is forcing you to translate with filters for corporate meddling and broadcast sensors. Even as someone who only watches Dubs, I still value and have use for the subs.
Honestly, I'm a pure dub watcher, not because I hate sub but because I have adhd and anytime I watch anything subbed, I'm constantly having to pause and back it up so that I can read it while enjoying the stunning animation. I have nothing against anyone who watches subbed. It's just difficult for me to read and appreciate the animation simultaneously. Not to mention i don't understand why dubbed voice actors always get hated on when they're trying their hardest. Plus dubbed anime opens a door for people who literally can't multitask.
I was just going to leave a comment exactly like this, but you nailed it on the head 100%! I'm exactly the same! I have ADHD, I'm a slow reader and prefer to experience the anime rather than constantly having to jump between watching the characters and reading the dialogue too. It frustrates me to no end how sub readers get so butt hurt over people who prefer dub. Who cares? We all love anime so what's the issue? Let people be people.
I too have ADHD 😊😊. And the whole reason I love English Dubbing is because of being able to learn and master the language very easily, even to the point where I find quotes and lines used in English dub voice actors that are very powerful and heartfelt. To me, that's the true beauty of English Dub, way better than Sub.
Let's be honest as much as people say they hate companies like 4Kids for their horrific dubs and censorship and generally giving dubs a bad name, they did give us some of the best scenes/memes in anime ever. Seriously watch the dubs for Yugioh, comedy gold
@@emblemblade9245 YES!! Dedede and escargoon were so much better in the dub than in the sub/original. It's one of those that I watched in the dub for the comedy.
I feel like people often forget to appreciate the dubbed versions. As someone whose first language isn't English, there were only so many animes that were dubbed in my language, like pokemon, digimon and maybe yu-gi-oh. Oh right, and there's also no animes subbed in my language, at least to my knowledge. So i basically couldn't watch either dubbed nor subbed versions before I learned English. I just feel like people often forget to be grateful that they can even watch anime in their own language, whether it's dubbed or subbed.
Honestly I like sub better bc I’m just so used to dub, I mean I was born in America but raised in Japan for 6 years of my life and now I want to move back but can’t bc of COVID-19. I mean in most dubs the va’s voice just doesn’t match the mc’s voice in my opinion.
My man, if you are gonna degrade a dub's attempt and being localized, atleast know the original food's name Otherwise, the 4kids corner is over there...
So... i always try the dub first. The reason is i have ADHD and reading is one of the things that is affected most. It is so hard for me to process the words and pay attention to the story. BUT if i hate the dub, I’ll tough it out and watch the sub. So for shows like death note, my hero, and fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, i LOVE the dubs. But then things like attack on Titan, i watch the sub. People give me crap for it, but I’d rather actually enjoy the show instead of beating myself up for struggling to read 🤷🏻♀️
I just mostly hate how popular it is to hate on dubs still. People think we still live in the 80s, when in actuality we got legends like Troy Baker, Laura Bailey, and Matt Mercer working in anime.
I'm an old fart in his fifties. When I was a young man, I watched a lot more foreign films than anime, mostly because that was more available, but also because I was putting on airs and indulging artsy-fartsy stuff. Back then, I was a subs only guy and held people who watched dubs in contempt. Bear in mind that dubs were universally terrible back then. You weren't missing much by avoiding dubs, and often the dubs made incomprehensible edits to the story. But things have changed a lot since I was young. For example, dubs have improved in quality a great deal. Also, I got tired of missing visuals because my eyes were permanently glued to the bottom of the screen in a scowl/squint. Not only are the dubs higher quality these days, but I really enjoy the luxury of being able to really drink in the visuals and not have to spend extra effort too follow the dialog. I'm pretty agnostic about dubs vs dubs, but if I have a choice, I'm more likely to choose dubs nowadays.
K A C C H A N T A N J I R O Idk, man. Dubs aren’t the absolute train wrecks they used to be back in the 90s. I mean, yeah, there are still dubs out there today that have poor direction but that’s not to say *all* dubs are always like that.
@@theflamingfreezer8478 Have you ever considered the fact that people can't concentrate on the show while reading subs? Have you ever considered the fact that people can do whatever they want? Same. I like to draw/knit/eat food while I watch anime so I watch dubs when I can But, if there's a new show airing and I am dying to watch it ASAP, I opt out for subs. Like S4 of MHA, I was a solid dub watcher for the first 3 then switched to dub cuz I was sick of people spoiling the episode for me before the dub came out
@@zusfrankenstein8561 ooohhh, so this is why. I mean, I have no problem with dubs but I kinda get tired of listening to them because they all talk pretty much the same, the way they say things and try to portray emotions etc for me feels stale. I feel like when I watch dubs, theres no distinction on what kind of chracter they are yknow? Accents don't differ from each other(not that this is needed but a lot of anime has people coming from different parts of japan or country they live in), the pacing of how they talk are the same, when they shout, and many more. And this is just me nitpicking of course. There are some that are good and maybe even better but it's a long way to go. The reason why I'm kinda disappointed when people watch dubs is not because dubs sucks, I just feel like they're missing out you know? The va's were intentionally picked and made for each chracters and no va sounds the same with every role they're given, that's why people get shocked when they find out two opposite chracters having the same va! The variety is probably what dubs are kind of missing, specially since the good stuff are still just arising, so I guess we have that to look forward to. Japanese VA's have been doing this for so long that there's a standard for them. Also, am I the only one getting annoyed with the screams and the way girls talk in dubs? And the translation getting lost? It's inevitable of course since they're two different languages but it's sad because the author probably thought about that a lot. There's a lot of authentic and good dialogues that just makes more sense in subs but, again, that's just me nitpicking. And it's not like I enjoyed reading subs and watching at the same time back then! It was hard to get used to but I learned pretty much how to talk in english by reading the subs and now it's pretty much effortless. So it's not farfetched for people to learn to watch with subs and give it a chance.
Let's admit folks if it wasn't for 4kids dubbing we wouldn't be having quotes that will go down in anime history like " I'll use my trusting frying pan as a drying pan" , "These doughnuts are great, jelly filled are my favorite, nothing beats a jelly filled doughnut" or the One Piece rap.
If you ever feel bad because somebody trashed you for liking dubs, just remember that people get trashed just because they like a certain anime, whether it's subbed or dubbed.
As in my case, people will threaten you to the point they actually plan to kill you because you liked dubs before. I remember almost having my entire life threatened by a gang of "weebs" in high school because they've found out that I enjoyed watching anime in dubs.
Thanks dude i haven't been able to enjoy anime recently cause people make me feel bad for enjoying my anime in dub. Like i am watch an inferior version i really dont wanna think about it but it surprisingly keeps popping in my head. I wish sometimes i didnt get into the Anime community, its its really toxic
Gods it's truly been awihle since I've last saw 4Kids In awhile. Don't get me wrong I sued to watch this back In my Teenhood or whatever and moved on with my life but I feel like history repeats Itself sometimes.
See, the issue for me is that Parts 1 and 2 are almost entirely iconic because of the original voice cast, while Parts 3 and 4's dubs really don't affect my enjoyment, since the voice acting wasn't anything special in the original. Like the Japanese voices for Joseph Joestar and Dio Brando for example, are just unbeatable in performance.
JoJo's dubs range from alright to god-tier Part 1 and 2 are alright but still enjoyable, 3 goes from alright to great and kinda teeters, 4 and 5 are just straight up amazing
As someone who has very severe dyslexia (to the point I'm having to use speech to text to write this lol) i really appreciate that you brought that up as a reason people watch anime dubbed. It's really frustrating when people get mad at me for watching it dubbed when its literally something I need to do to enjoy the anime. Great video!
@@eleanor9878 i mean. if you seriously have to pause a video to understand the subs then yeah just watch dub. but like im sure nobody out there pauses the vid to read the subs lmao
Same! It shouldn't matter how someone watches it, all that matters is that you enjoy it the way you want to. I also can't read that well, so I watch everything in dub. It's much more enjoyable because I don't have to keep pausing it to read because I can't understand what they're saying.
As someone who is visually impaired, I'm grateful you brought up some of these points. Not only is being able to see the subtitles a problem, but I am also, for the most part, incapable of focusing on two different visuals simultaneously. Meaning I can't read subtitles AND watch the beatiful animations anime offers so it really means a lot when people are able to point out some of the pros to dubbed anime instead of immediately casting judgement on me for my preferences and assuming I either hate Japanese culture or am to lazy.
Yes! I’m severely dyslexic so when I try reading subs I literally have to pause every 5 seconds! It’s just far more enjoyable to watch with dubs for me :)
And that’s on ableism (to be fair I have yet to see some one on the hardcore sub side be an openly ableist POS about it but sadly with how shitty people online are I don’t discount the possibility entirely LOL)
I totally understand! At first when I watched anime subs, I would always pause when a new dialogue appeared, and read the entire dialogue before hitting play again and watching the animation unfold. It was a constant pause and play-pause-play-pause while watching an episode, and it consumed a lot of time, more than the episode's duration. As I grew up I got tired of that routine, so I started watching some anime dubs. Of course, I first searched in the internet to see if the dub of that anime was any good, and if most people agreed then I'd give it a try. I'm so glad I switched to dubs! I still watch most anime subbed, but there are some great dubbed anime out there!! Like Steins;Gate: this series is SO heavy on dialogue and technical language, so I'm glad I chose to watch the dub!
I only knew of PreCure because my sister and I watched Glitter Force and we were like "aw, this is a cute show, but why are the colors weird and they seem like they're really trying to convince you they're in America when they clearly aren't." Then I found out that it was part of a very long muti-show franchise and saw the changes they made first hand and I got pretty pissed.
I agree wholeheartedly, it’s the fact they made all those unnecessary changes and cut episodes that makes glitter force bad imo not the fact that it’s a dub (especially since futari wa precure got an English dub that was actually faithful and didn’t cut episodes but it never took off unfortunately) it’s such a shame as well because I think if given the proper chance precure could do well in the west, the changes they made are downright condescending, now has to has the dubbing rights to precure and I hope they do well with it (but it’s been a while so my hopes are low)

I choose on random if i watch subbed or dubbed but when I pick one for a series. I stick with it until I finish the series. For me I hate changing it once I am used to certain one. I will only change the dub if it sound horrendously terrible but other than that I don't really care

Anyone else wonder if this debate exists in Japan? Like, take any Disney movie or Western cartoon and dub it in Japanese. Do Japanese watchers fight over sub vs. dubs?
i heard this is a hot topic in the japanese king of the hill fandom..... though this was mentioned off hand to me in a lighthearted discussion about sub vs dubs so i cannot verify this claim LMAO
I know they spotlight a non English language original on Netflix UK the trailer that auto plays will be English dub by default. When watching you always have to check your audio settings and set it to “original audio.” Sometimes it will defeat to closed captioned subtitles and you will have to turn on the regular subs manually:
Well for me it’s the opposite. I actually I like the high pitches of subs, because usually when female dub actresses try to do high pitched voices, it sounds like shit in my opinion and makes me wanna cut my ears off
While I agree, it really depends for me. Some of the actresses try really hard to match the Japanese and it sounds so off and unnatural. So long as children sound like children and the voice seems like it would come from that character idgaf about how close you match the pitch of the original voice.
I kind of have a soft spot for 4Kids era Pokemon and Y-Gi-Oh. Anime or otherwise they were some of the first franchises I ever got into and for all the cheese factor and deserved hate they get they also deserve credit for being a gateway to an entire genre for a generation of fans. Not to mention some of the Pokemon themes from that era are still bangers to this day.
Ghost Stories doesn't really count since it doesn't do the function of a regular dub, it's special. Fullmetal Alchemist My Hero Mob Psycho Attack on Titan On the other hand ...
In my experience, I'll usually watched dubbed but with subtitles. I prefer hearing stuff in English, but I like knowing what was originally said. I went through both FMA series for the first time a couple months ago, and one thing I noticed was Izumi's house wife gag was almost always changed in the 2003 series, which I usually really liked
I'm almost blind in one eye and ever so slightly blind in the other. Whenever I watch sub anime I have to get really close to the screen and pause the stream each time the text changes, this gives me the feeling of reading more of a manga then actually watching a show. So dub is just easier for me to watch because I don't have to take myself out of the immersion each second.
I’m not in the same category (but disabled regardless) and gatekeeping like that really pisses me off! Like do they expect a blind person to learn THE ENTIRE JAPANESE language just because they don’t like that somebody else other than them has a different way of watching anime
10:49 - 10:59 YES YES YES This is my problem with some subs. Some series are dialogue-heavy, and as much as I love listening to the Japanese language, I do wish I could watch them as a dub.
By me it is the Polar oposide I mostly cant stand watching animes (when I watch them) in Japanese, I clearly prefer dubs. Maybe the Reason is i'm german and here most of the dubs a rather solid in my opinion
@@Acacius1992 When I first got into anime, the first one I watched in sub was Your Lie in April(it didn't have a dub back then). I watched most of the first episode muted because the Japanese sounded so weird to me. I didn't do that for the second episode so I got over myself XD Now I go by instinct if both options are available to me.
For me, I'm 99% of the time a sub watcher, but the only anime where I wish it had a dub is Kekkai Sensen. The style of storytelling it uses is heavily stylized, to the point that it sort of reminds you of a cracked out version of Suicide Squad's opening sequence, except the whole show is like that. It's hard to track and the dialogue moves fast, doesn't linger on explanations too much, and overall just requires you to be fast on the uptake.
The Hetalia dub is fucking gold, and it helps that Funimation focused primarily on American-based stereotypes and world events (such as referencing the one-child policy and Russia leaving the G-summit, neither of which are present in the sub).
For me personally, I always watch anime dubbed as I'm dyslexic. I have tried time and time again to watch it subbed but I got tired of having to keep pausing the episode to read or re-read the sub titles, or the amount of times I got confused about the plot as I read conversation wrongly. But yes, I too cringe at "big brother" as English just doesn't have the same honorifics as Japanese.
People who try to say that one is always better then the other have always annoyed me with that. Both have their merit, and both nowadays have lots of skilled people working on them. I feel like this is also especially true for me, as I personally can have problems hearing and understanding spoken language, while being a quite fast reader, who tends to prefer reading to watching often, so subs often work best for me, while I have a little brother with dyslexia, who definitely prefers dubs for himself since he can have problems with subs.
@@theflamingfreezer8478 there ARE good English VA's it's just that the roles that they sign up for don't really match their voices, which sometimes makes it cringey
To me its a case by case thing. Sometimes I like the dub more like with the German Dub of Made in Abyss and the English dub fore modern Persona games. But HunterxHunter I found in japanese better. I disagree to the whole "japanesse voiceactors sound always better thing." When I played Persona Q2 which has no dub there was not a single voice I prefered over the english cast but several where I liked the English voices I knew from other Persona games more. Aigis, Elizabeth, Morgana, Teddy, Naoto. So yeah case by case thing.
The energy with which so many of these guys respond to an Eng dub remains baffling. Like, I'd get it if it's like "this characters direction missed the point. And this one sounds a little distant", but they so often respond to it like it's genuine agony to their ears. I mean... what dub voice actor hurt you?
I remember when a sub elitist on Twitter spit on voice actor Zach Aguilar on how she hated his performance as Tanjiro from Demon Slayer and told the voice actor to "go f*ck himself" (she even tagged the dude). When Zach himself respond, she went "Oh sorry I didn't mean to hurt your feelings I just prefer subbed anime". Then a day later, she deleted her Tweet... and then her Twitter account. She didn't apologize for she was rude; she just 'apologized' because she got caught. In what world is telling someone you hate their work gonna make them laugh? I mean, what kind of a moron actually tags the person they're insulting, and then get surprised when that person sees the tweet? "Oh sorry i didn't meant to hurt your feelings. you're still trash tho." That's not stating an opinion. It's called being a psycho.
@@TheSHIELDCap That's the thing. I "get" if you prefer it subbed, and if you think the translation barriers make the dub of anything difficult for you to enjoy, but people talk like it's the opposing football team. It's like they have legitimate stakes in spreading the word that this or that professional performance is absolute garbage, and an insult to One Piece, or something.
I've seriously had to defend my love of dub more times than I can remember. It's really dumb. I enjoy voice acting in both languages, but for some reason people want to pretend dubs are all 4kids quality.
@@Acacius1992 Dragon Ball Z as a whole really made some good choices with its voice cast. Cell is one of my favorite voiced villians. Cowboy bebop's Spike is legendary. The whole anime is voiced wonderfully. Shin-Chan is SO much funnier in English. Actually alot of comedies are better because of timing, and not reading the punchline too soon. Almost all the studio Ghibili movies are dubbed with such care, its an insult to call them lazy. The list really goes on.
Yup.. COME ON PEOPLE! Dubs can be just as good as subs! Just because they’re censorship doesn’t mean they’re all crap! Dubs and and subs are basically the same if you think about. And if someone uses the excuse “Subs tells us the real thing” then that’s dumb. Subs can be just as wrong as dubs so don’t give dub so much crap
The trauma-inducing age of eye meltingly bad dubs are a thing of the past. While I still don't think dubs measure up to the original quite yet, (mostly because America's VA industry is not as developed as Japan and not because of a lack of inherent skill) dubs are at a point where I feel comfortable talking to a dub watcher about an anime and feel like we're talking about the same show.
same. every time it happens i have to facepalm & tell them it's [current year]. i have been FORCED into watching dubs due to visual difficulties. yet even people that know about this still attack me for commenting things like "can someone pls inform me when this is dubbed" on anime threads. people like this just really have a serious tunnel vision issue, they can't stop & consider how someone else could have a preference different from theirs.
Love this line honestly I find it funny now, though as a kid I was so confused when I heard it, I ended up thinking that, in the world of pokemon that was just what doughnuts looked like.
Erin McWilliams But would you really have minded if they called them „rice balls“? Even if I didn’t know what rice balls were, I would probably believe that the people in Pokémon are just eating fantasy food. Heck, they already were with the Pokéblocks and the Poffins. That’s honestly what makes this line even more hilarious and awkward than it already is.
AkameGaKillfan777 Which makes sense, because it’s her making fun of Kira’s obsessive need to live a quiet life. So his punishment is to be given the opposite.
"I will DEFEAT this village." Deidara in the German dub of Naruto Shippuuden "The family Uchiha has been kidnapped by Itachi and is nowhere to be found." Dito... Everywhere ^^
I used to prefer dubbed because I that’s how I started watching anime. I was introduced to it by watching Naruto on Netflix. They don’t have Naruto Shippuden so I was forced to go to crunchy roll. I started watching subbed and liked it a lot more. It sounds more natural to me despite not knowing Japanese. I also read fast so I am able to keep up. I still see the pros of dubbed since I can glance away.
@Quilo Sky I mean, you're missing out. Since only the most popular anime get dubbed, (which means 9 times out of 10 it's a shonen) it really narrows your options when it comes to watching anime. There's a lot of gems out there that aren't dubbed, and they're really worth your time.
azul091s this man is on the internet everywhere on every sub vs dub debate thingy, he’s a full on weaboo he literally thinks that everything needs to be in Japanese

@@corrintel7103 Yes indeed it is, hell the finding nemo rip offs are still considered anime whether you like it or not, (it's made using cgi animation.) But Disney is actually very popular in Japan, more popular than the anime from Japan. (Which kinda makes me sad thinking about it)
sometimes japanese dubs of english properties are similarly a trainwreck. transformers prime japanese dub includes such wonderful changes like: starscream with all the foppishness and none of the menace, genki girl airachnid, and the entire removal of the final 5-10 minutes of the season 2 finale for being too dark, among other bizarre edits to make it more 'kid friendly'.
@@flaco3462 It's mostly a mix of it never really noticeably being bad and also extreme irreversible trauma from the early ages of english dub that made people seek safe haven in subbed anime, which just seemed that much more bearable in comparison to the sheer brain-cell reducing horror that was early english dubs.
When I watch a sub, I find that I miss a lot of what's happening on screen, since my eye is constantly going down to the bottom of the screen to read the words. I don't have this issue in dubs, and can actually view the entire thing without interruption.
The reason why I always listen to dubs is because most of the time it’s hard for me to watch something not in English and me just focusing on subtitles just to see what they’re saying. I know a lot of people (I think) Shame people for liking dubs but that’s my preference, especially when there are a ton of good dubs

@@minatoyuki4800 No it IS a good anime despite the censoring. I will never forgive 4kids for the One piece dub but I refuse to support the notion that all of their dubs were bad because in my opinion that's simply not true.
Remember when 4Kids tried to dub Dragonball z, and it only lasted a few episodes. Also sonic x as fine as their voice actors are, the show itself kinda got unecasssryly butchered with removing like all text and censorship of some powerful scenes which just ruin tone or situation
I found that I prefer it when characters talk like I do. It just makes it easier for me to relate to them emotionally. What I mean isn't that I can't relate to them because they are speaking Japanese, but the words that they choose to say and how they express themselves are foreign to me. There are phrases that we don't say, Cell gave an example of people referring to a sibling as "big brother" which is very uncommon for westerners. The problem with subs is that a lot of it is accurate to how Japanese people talk, whereas dubs have more leeway to change things so they sound more natural in English.
Yeah, I also register emotion better in my language, even if objectively the Japanese voice actor is better at being emotional. Of course, it’s not a like/dislike difference and I’m not opposed to subs, I just like the dubs better for the most part. Another thing is when a distinctive word is frequently said in a sub, it sort of takes me out of it every time I hear that word, like a sort of verbal tic, because I don’t recognize the word itself but I recognize the sound and it really stands out from the rest of the sentence every time it’s vocalized, which can be a bit distracting.
It's also funny how people complain about wanting the original script, yet they complain about dumb stuff like underage sex, when it's actually legal in Japan.
Huh, interesting. I feel like I'm the opposite--that I'm so *bored* of english phrasing and english tropes that seeing Japanese ones feel fresh and interesting. Oftentimes I'll watch a show twice, once with subs and then once with dubs just so I can appreciate the slight difference in dialogue line choices.
I'm an old fart in my 20s. When I saw Cowboy Bebop and Hellsing's dubs, my brain exploded with excitement. When I listened to Kill La Kill's, I loved it even more.
I love both, but the one I watch depends on the version I find first. For example, for Hyperdimension Neptunia, I found the dub first and so now I watch it in English and play the games in English too. But, for No Game No Life, I found the sub first and so I just watch that.
Funny enough, I used to hate both audio tracks for Neptunia. But the dub overall gels with me more. I respect the Japanese voices, but it's one of the few series where I don't prefer both languages.

Subtitles help people who are deaf or have audio processing issues, and dubs help people who are blind or have trouble reading. Both are good to have, especially when done well!

Just to reiterate something I said on Facebook a couple of weeks ago: Back in the old days, Anime was poorly translated and poorly dubbed by the sort of low-rent actors who did it as just another job like dubbing foreign porn. These days they are expertly translated and written by top-notch writers, and performed by stellar voice actors who are totally into it dedicated to bringing the best possible version out in their language. I have lost all patience with snobs who think modern-day dubs are somehow inauthentic, compared to the constant distraction of reading subs. If you want the Authentic Experience so badly, learn frigging Japanese.
Well miden day dubs are mostly just fine. some are really good, but it just feels like they use the same voice actors. So it gets repetitive if you watch dubs over and over again.
Dubs have really come a long way. One of the dubs that blew me away was Steins;Gate ... I honestly think that the dub VA for Okabe Rintarou knocked it out of the park even more than the JP VA, to the point that the dub VA apparently himself had a mental breakdown after THAT scene in Steins;Gate where Okabe has a breakdown. He just gave it 150% and it shows in how well it's performed.
Cellared is best anime channel, her best anime review was Scoob. Serious note: Least she does talk about anime like at the end. I remember she brought up my hero academia often.
I feel sub-loyalists, at the very least, need to give dubs some credit for making it easier for Westerners to get into anime. Many anime fans started out by watching dubs for one reason or another. I can name very few of my weeb friends who weren't first introduced to anime through the English dubs of Fairy Tail, Black Butler, Hetalia, BNHA, and whatnot.
Yeah, even though animes like Yugioh were localized into cartoons aimed toward a younger demographic than in Japan, they kinda changed the landscape of anime localization and for all their missteps they’re still what GOT many people into anime
Oh my god I must me old... what introduced me to anime was Inuyasha, Ghost isn’t what Shell, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Samurai Champloo coming on at like 3am on Adult Swim as a kid. Crazy.
It's probably wishful thinking, but imagine if subtitles only made words appear on the screen as they were being spoken, rather than full sentences, like how video games do it. Oh wait, "sub perfect, dub trash" my bad.
@@moviefan6943 If it's comics or a book, you can laugh at it. But it's really hard when you watch a foreign animated show with a subtitle, since they can also lose the humor of the moment. I think the Joker put it best: *"Except you had to EXPLAIN it to me! If you EXPLAIN a joke, then it's NO JOKE!"*
Here in mexico the dubs are so limited until the point they use raven from teen titans for the girl from btoom, gumball for naruto and shrek for sabuza from naruto, sort of shows how there are few voice actors
Even Hayao Miyazaki, arguably Japan’s greatest filmmaker / animator, acknowledges that dubs perform better in areas that subtitles and the original can’t. And he furthermore corroborates that subtitles are distorted and not authentic. [ Disney releases Miyazaki films in two formats: a subtitled version for the purists and a dubbed extravaganza for the popcorn crowd. Howl's Moving Castle is no exception. It features the voice of Billy Crystal as the obstreperous fire demon and Lauren Bacall as the Witch of the Wastes. This is fine, says Miyazaki, because Bacall is "a fabulous woman" who brought something to the role that home-grown actors couldn't. “All the Japanese female voice actors have voices that are very coquettish and wanting male attention, which was not what we wanted at all." In any case, he adds, who is to say that a subtitled print is any more authentic? "When you watch the subtitled version you are probably missing just as many things. There is a layer and a nuance you're not going to get. Film crosses so many borders these days. Of course it is going to be distorted." ] - The Guardian, September 14, 2005 - Headline: “A god among animators”
People really like to pretend that Manga authors don't have their visions mangled up by corporations over in Japan, or that animators don't go through absolute hell while working.

How close are people sitting if they can't read the text while seeing the whole screen? Maybe they just need to find better subs that use legible font for the subtitles? While I'm coming at this more from the tokusatsu side, where unless you specifically like sentai and nothing else, sub is pretty much all you've got. Even the adaptation of Super Sentai into Power Rangers isn't always handled well (I see you skulking in the shadows there Super Megaforce). Want to watch any Ultraman besides the FoxBox dub of Tiga? Pretty much any Kamen Rider? Any more mature series like Garo?
It takes some getting used to but it is possible to enjoy sub while looking at other parts of the screen, I can see though how not everyone would be able to do that and that’s a very valid reasoning
you learn how to notice everything at once after a while and you will also grow familiar to the lanuage to the point of understanding parts of it without having to read
That makes sense since many times 4Kids bought the rights for an anime it was valid not just in North America but pretty much the entire American continent and even parts of Europe, and considering how certain american sensibilities are also shared with many occidental countries i guess you can see where this is going. I live in Brazil and back then many our local dubs were based on the 4Kids edited versions and english scripts due to them having full international rights over them, so basically a dub of a dub.
I watch dubs because I can't read fast enuf do to a.d.h.d and dxlysu but I can pulse the show and read the sub titles that way. and I'm glad you brought that up in the video.😀
(Not doing this to be rude, just to help) "I watch dubs because I can't read fast enough due to ADHD and dyslexia, but I can pause the show and read the subtitles that way. I'm glad you brought that up in the video. 😀)
For me, I’ve tried watching subbed before but I just don’t like it. I can’t process the words fast enough to keep up so I’m always having to pause the show, breaking my immersion. There’s also the fact that because I have to focus on reading the words so much I can’t actually watch what’s happening on screen. I just can’t enjoy subs the way I do with dubs. It sucks cause I know how many good anime there are that don’t have dubs, but I just can’t watch subs.
The answer to this question? It depends on the anime. and it's impossible to say which its better when there are thousands of different animes with varying quality. Also I highly recommend senton academy
My idea is if the anime is a comedy and romance I will watch dub because it will be funnier and I feel more if my own language because your 1st language you think with emotion
I agree completely. Inflection is more emotional than emotion for me, and I can only understand the former in English, so it’s not as potent in sub when I hear it.
Sometimes the people dubbing certain comedy anime will even go as far as to change the script to make the comedy more catered to the Western audience (in a good way). D-Frag is an example of a comedy anime that I will always prefer the dub over the sub
I used to also think this, then I was forced to watch the sub for Kaguya-sama: Love is War, since there was no dub, and my entire perspective on the subject changed. The voice acting in that show is phenomenal
Asher King I agree with both of your replies because I’ve seen love is war but it still stands if the dub is available for a comedy or romance anime I’ll choose that but if the sub has more episodes I’ll start on dub then transfer to subs
It's a tossup, but I enjoy both of them as long as I understand what's happening in the anime show or movie. Even you will have some instances where the dub version of an anime series/film is better than the original version (e.g. Cowboy Bebop, Ghost Stories) or the voice actor/voice actress in the dub version is better than the original Japanese actor/actress or vice-versa. Also, play this video at 1.50x speed to save 20 minutes of your time on Cellspex monologuing herself.
I have witnessed actual shouting matches about this topic. Honestly I watch both. I watch dubs so I can work on cosplays at the same time and I watch subs because I'm impatient and lived through the vhs years. As for recommendations, I suggest Cells at Work and Smile Down the Runway 😃
for me, it depends on what sounds the most.. "natural". sometimes (and most of the time), i think the voice acting in the subs sound the best. however, there are rare moments when i prefer the voice acting in the dub- and while i can't think of any anime off the top of my head, this can be applied to japanese games i really like, persona 5 and the danganronpa series. neither have bad subs, i just think the dubs sound incredible.
I've literally had people breathe sighs of relief when I say I watch dubs (not exclusively) because they'd been trying to get back into anime for years, but couldn't concentrate on subs and the only fans they knew were subs only gatekeepers. There's also my roommate with ADD who needs a dub with subtitles on to concentrate, my blind roommate who wouldn't even have the option of a sub, and me, who just doesn't have the time or patience to watch a whole series without being able to look away for 2 seconds. I've watched plenty of subs, but the only reason I've been able to watch more than a single 13 episode anime in the past 2 years is because dubs are so available. Shows like Chihayafuru I could never watch in English because the premise of the series is so tied to language, but other than that dubs can be funnier, have the acting contribute to the experience rather than be neutral (which is how it feels when watching in a language I don't know), and just take less effort in a hobby I don't want to take up all my time and energy
Like just for Chihayafuru. I'm honestly amazed that one got dubbed at all given how tied to Japanese language the show is. Before I found out it had one, I legitimately thought it was the sort of show you couldn't dub
Personally, I generally like dubs as its easier to focus on other things than having to focus on subtitles; but if the voice acting throws me off I'll go to dub. For instance, I couldnt watch Maid Sama's dub. I had to use sub. My friend was the opposite. No problem there. And I watch Seven Deadly Sins in English because I prefer it that way, but I know others dont. Its preference and nobody is in the wrong unless you start telling people what they should and shouldnt like. Mad respect though for this video/ comments being respectful rather than bickering.
i always watch the sub first, then i watch the dub after. personally, i feel like it’s more fun to see what it’s like for a character to have different elements brought out of their personality through the different voices they’re given. some people like different things though, so it’s all based on a persons’ personal preference. i rly don’t get why people think it’s argue worthy lol.
Robert Simon there’s one dude named The Flaming Freezer views the Japanese language as god and compares liking the English dub to pedophilia and beastility
Reading dialogue sorta ruins the flow for me. Especially in comedy anime where timing is really important. I honestly just go read the manga if there isn't a dub out somtimes.
I would argue that the stilted delievery of the dubs also works to ruin the flow, because you're left with a feeling that something else was supposed to be there. It's not the dubs fault, they have to match the lipflaps, so its either that or mistimed nonsense, so I will give it a bit of leeway, but isn't reading the manga and watching subbed anime the same thing on a conceptual level?
@@zusfrankenstein8561 Additionally, when I read a manga, I hear it in my head as the characters talking. For me, reading manga is a lot more similar to watching dubbed anime-- all the same visuals but with the voices in English.
Well it's not like the delivery in the sub with the Japanese va is lost. I get a laugh even when I missed what they said. It's all the context and acting that get me.
I've watched my hero academia in both sub and dub and loved both so when I watched it with my sister and brother in law I let them chose what they wanted to watch it in. My brother in law is a slow reader so he generally prefers dubs, which is perfectly understandable. I hope we can watch Ouran host club together because I also really like that dub!
I love both of these dubs :D When I first watched MHA I saw it in dub, and I’m just used to the voices of Deku, Bakugou, Kirishima, and others. All my friends hate me because I like it better and I don’t know why T_T
There's some animes prefer dubbed over than subbed, each one for different reasons. Two of them are "Noragami" and "Yuri!! on ice". The first one is 'cause I like Yato's voice and the jokes he makes during all the series. The voice actor did an excellent job with yato, so as Yukine and Bishamon. The second one is because in the dub, most of the characters have accents from their own countries. Some of them aren't so convincing, but viktor and Yurio's voices are very good 'though the VA are americans.
I saw a clip of Keep your hands off eizouken and I was legit overwhelmed with how fast they were speaking so I am waiting for the dub. I am ok with sub or dub but prefer dub since I can understand better, specially in shounen anime I despise having to stop just to read or I’ll missing something important for the most part
Haha, this. Any time two people are talking in a sub and I have to keep track of multiple lines on the screen changing at different rates...hoo boy, that stuff knocks me off balance
It's up to your preferences. I'm a sub watcher, but I'm not gonna renounce dubs like they're the spawn of the underworld. I do genuinely feel you guys when you say it's hard to keep track, but for me personally, and I guess most sub watchers, the specific wording of the dialogue doesn't quite matter as much as the delivery and tone behind it. You don't need to memorize every specific word in a dialogue chain, all you need to do is get a general gist of what they're saying and the voice acting will carry the rest of the scene for you.
that makes sense for a dub watcher, people who watch sub don't really have an issue with that probably cause were used to it and we prefer the original (superior) version or show
Quoting translator Sarah Moon: *"It was a huge shock for me when I learned Japanese, watched anime, and realized all the Japanese VAs weren't as great as I thought they were...and that a lot of the songs I loved had really cheesy lyrics."*
The songs thing I definitely agree. I know Japanese, but I can't imagine what she was expecting Japanese voice actors to be like before learning Japanese. The emotions and tone voice is the same whether you know the language or not. The voice acting in anime is exaggerated compared to how real people speak, but I would assume everyone knows that. So what could possibly make her think they're not as good as she thought?
@@zahraa4149 Since most anime watchers don't speak Japanese, it's easy for them to say "dubs are terrible". But if you don't speak Japanese, you cannot determine with any degree of accuracy whether the acting is any good. And please, spare me the hooie about how you can just tell by how well the actors emote. Any actor can emote. Emoting is one part of acting. There's timing, enunciation, and all kinds of nuances that go into delivering a good line, all of which is lost on you if you don't speak the language. So yeah, they're gonna say "Japanese is better" by default.
@the dragon sage More like calling out sub elitists who keep on yapping about subs being superior. And I never said dubs are automatically superior, I just fed up with sub elitists. Here's the problem with sub elitists and their "superior sub watcher" nonsense: *they're not really watching and enjoying anime. They just want the feel of superiority for being part of an exclusive club.* P.S. your videos are terrible.
@@zahraa4149 No they are not. Combined with everything the OP says, one emotion isn't universal across all languages. Good job proving their point about meat-riding Japanese because you don't actually speak it.
Pro of SUB: - It's the exact tone, voice, and expresion that the creator and director wanted the characters to have. Pro of DUB: - Some localizations are really cool tho
Sub fans aren’t even getting the “original” experience unless they speak fluent Japanese. In that case, they wouldn’t be watching with subtitles to begin with.
This. Sub elitists never admit that subtitles also have flaws because not everything you're reading across the screen is entirely on point. The best way to watch anime is to watch it in a language you understand, rather than a foreign language with subtitles.
Also the Anime that actually take place in Japan do not represent how people actually behave over there, so this "real emotion" narrative is also wrong. If anything King of the Hill has a more realistic depiction of Japan than Anime does.
@@TheSHIELDCapThe problem is that some dub localizers make unnecessary changes, especially censorship changss with some anime. 4kids and Funimation are two examples. Funimation made script changes in the Dragon Ball Z dub and ruined the original experience, adding things that weren't there in the first place and 4Kids Americanized anime and censored them. Most dubs do not change the original source material much today but back in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's, that was more common.
In that case it is basically picking which is less shitty. The dubs would end up being more shitty. Both aren't my native languages(English and Japanese). It is like saying dubs are better when watching Rick and Morty in Japanese dub on Netflix. Also, the subtitle argument really doesn't work. Even in US when people are watching a Hollywood movie or tv series more and more people(somewhere in 70%) prefer putting subtitles even tho the audio track is in English.
So far, my favorite anime dubs are Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Black Lagoon, Pokemon, and Yu-Gi-Oh. I'm currently giving the dubs of My Hero Academia, Erased, and One Punch Man a chance.
@@EightThreeEight If that's what you wanna think of them, go ahead. I personally think they are great and prefer them over the Japanese version. If it makes you feel better, I think the One Piece 4Kids dub was terrible.
personally I prefer the subs, I like how it sounds, I like that its at least as close as it can be to a "perfect" translation especially since Im currently learning the language and it helps me figure out how to pronounce things and all that, and I like how it helps understand the culture. HOWEVER I do like a bunch of dubs and will prefer the dubs over subs, Hetalia is one of my favorite dubs not because of the quality but it was a little unnerving to me to not hear an accent to each character to their respective country's it just always bugged me when watching the sub. Miyazaki's films will always be dubbed for me because thats how I would watch them as a kid. Black Butler and Soul Eater are some others I prefer the dub to, BB for the accents and all that, and Soul Eater just because thats how I first watched it, I still like the sub for it but I prefer the dub if its available. But that's just my two cents on the matter (I also really like the sub of Pokemon because everyone just seems so much smarter and Ash isn't as annoying in the sub and Team Rocket aren't portrayed as complete fools in it for me as well)
@@beastcarleeto707 The weird thing about that is that does not really explain what about anime they can't get into. I mostly watch dubs but when i was watching my hero academia season 4 the sub was ahead of the dub so i decided to watch the sub instead and i found i really enjoyed watching the sub as much as the dub even if I couldn't keep up with what was happening 100 percent of the time. Basically if i can't watch the dub i'll happily watch the sub.
It's kind of a funny thing, because I only got into subs in the first place after I found out that I couldn't watch Season 2 of MHA dubbed without a premium subscription. So I had to watch the rest of the show in subbed form, and I preferred it over the dub and have stuck with subs since.
Being a mostly dub watcher because I find it hard to concentrate and read for 22+ minutes straight is hard. BUT I have watched subs for anime I want to continue but isn't dubbed yet (Black Butler II, Hunter x Hunter (Most of the chimera ant arc)). In my experience growing up, when I said I really only watched dubbed people get on your case about it and make fun of you and are kinda rude. So, it's nice seeing something that gives the dub it's credit! Also meeting other dub watchers was such a sigh of relief. Also, I try to wait to see if an anime gets dubbed. I can't really watch a sub anime unless I'm emotionally invested, so starting a series sub is hard. And I'm not a fast reader and pausing and rewinding every few minutes can be annoying. ADHD is a hassle.
I'm mostly dub watcher, but the anime I love the most, One Outs, it isn't even available in dub, I watched it in sub but enjoyed a lot, quality matters
That’s what I always found funny about the debate. People say that subs always “sound better” but how many of them actually know what bad or even below average Japanese VA sounds like? It’s both pretentious and misinformed
Exactly! I've heard some anime dubbed in my mother tongue and it sounds so cringey. And when I compare it to the subtitles, they don't match up so the original message and context gets lost.
EmblemBlade9 Maybe lots of the “good Japanese va” is actually bad, but some times it’s very clear when va is bad. Like if lipflaps don’t work, or if there aren’t emotions

As someone with adhd, it feels almost impossible to read and focus on the subtitles. Having to just sit there and pay full attention to it takes the enjoyment out of it for me
Yes! Same for me! Sometimes I get so focused on reading the dialogue that I don't see the action on the screen. Wordy animes are the biggest culprit of this problem. When the characters don't talk as much it's not an issue.
They still censored the death of characters in sonic X and the music too is bad for the dub :( and man what they did to the tails scene. At least the french dub was closer to the original Japanese version.
@@doniarts The one that makes me laugh the most is that they changed all the gun sound effects to laser sounds. I mean, I could forgive it when it came to Eggmam's robots, but when a human police officer is clearly wielding a rifle made of wood and it sounds like a laser gun, you just make yourselves look like idiots.
The beginning of this video is exactly how I feel about dubs. They're fine as long as they're uncut and aside from changing certain phrases for translational purposes otherwise remain faithful to the Japanese original as opposed to dubs that come from companies like 4Kids that heavily edit and butcher the experience and change Satoshi to Ash and Usagi to Serena for the sake of removing evidence that the show itself is Japanese in which case I'm picking subs on the spot.
While I don't have a problem with subs existing, I personally just can't stand to watch something subbed for two reasons: 1. Nobody watches something to read the spoken dialogue and 2. If there's a big dramatic reveal in a piece of dialogue, It kinda lessens the dramatic punch to me if i have to quickly read it instead of hearing it at the same time the characters do.
To me I like both it depends on which anime I’m watching
I agree. I feel that if it's not a dub of any Dragon Ball series, then I'm watching it in sub

Yup.
You, I like you
As a man who has a preference for dubs over subs, I thank you for this comment.
I don't watch anime but anime girl voice actors have the most whiny high pitched voices.
May I welcome your optimism to the degradation that is the internet, but yes I wish this was the last thing anime fans would be willing to fight over.
And sometimes, they might have rewatch value, and you can’t play it in the background/multitask if you can’t understand it!
Let's be honest as much as people say they hate companies like 4Kids for their horrific dubs and censorship and generally giving dubs a bad name, they did give us some of the best scenes/memes in anime ever.

It's not the dubs fault entirely, since voice acting is so much more widespread in Japan, but most dubbing companies, namely Funimation, reuse the same voice actors over and over again, usually to save money, because finding new talent is expensive and hard. Though I understand why this problem arose in the dubbing industry first place, it doesn't change the fact that I get annoyed from hearing Bryce Papenbrook or Colleen Clinkenbeard's voice in literally everything. There's such a thing as overexposure. You stop hearing the characters and hear them instead. But, if there's a new show airing and I am dying to watch it ASAP, I opt out for subs.

Although, it is nice to flip the languages in JoJo from English for parts 1 and 2, and back to the Sub for parts 3 and 4.
The accents are an absolute delight for me in parts 1 and 2, couldn’t live without ‘em. But Jojo is awesome enough to be enjoyed either way
Man, I watched JoJo flipping from sub to dub after every episode and honestly that was the best way for me to experience it
Part 3 and 4 have amazing dubs. Part 4 in particular has one of the best dubs in recent memory.
JoJo's dubs range from alright to god-tier

As someone who is visually impaired, I'm grateful you brought up some of these points. Not only is being able to see the subtitles a problem, but I am also, for the most part, incapable of focusing on two different visuals simultaneously. Meaning I can't read subtitles AND watch the beatiful animations anime offers so it really means a lot when people are able to point out some of the pros to dubbed anime instead of immediately casting judgement on me for my preferences and assuming I either hate Japanese culture or am to lazy.
To be fair, this isn't what people think at first when you just say you like dubbed version better.

I generally don't hate dubs I just hate it when companies like Saban change the show entirely like with PreCure :(
I only knew of PreCure because my sister and I watched Glitter Force and we were like "aw, this is a cute show, but why are the colors weird and they seem like they're really trying to convince you they're in America when they clearly aren't." Then I found out that it was part of a very long muti-show franchise and saw the changes they made first hand and I got pretty pissed.

Try watching Rick and Morty in Japanese. Or South Park in Cantonese.

Pro of dubs: the older women/girls ACTUALLY SOUND THEIR DAMN AGE
TDLBallistic k that’s facts
Well for me it’s the opposite. I actually I like the high pitches of subs, because usually when female dub actresses try to do high pitched voices, it sounds like shit in my opinion and makes me wanna cut my ears off
While I agree, it really depends for me. Some of the actresses try really hard to match the Japanese and it sounds so off and unnatural. So long as children sound like children and the voice seems like it would come from that character idgaf about how close you match the pitch of the original voice.
Agreed. Yuki's (School-Live) and Haru's (Beastars) voices are better in dub.

I'm almost blind in one eye and ever so slightly blind in the other. Whenever I watch sub anime I have to get really close to the screen and pause the stream each time the text changes, this gives me the feeling of reading more of a manga then actually watching a show. This is my problem with some subs.

Now I go by instinct if both options are available to me.
" say we hit italy first, because they can't drive and are usually drunk!" I'm dying
I'm feel sorry for you and I agree with you with everything
People who try to say that one is always better then the other have always annoyed me with that. Both have their merit, and both nowadays have lots of skilled people working on them. I feel like this is also especially true for me, as I personally can have problems hearing and understanding spoken language, while being a quite fast reader, who tends to prefer reading to watching often, so subs often work best for me, while I have a little brother with dyslexia, who definitely prefers dubs for himself since he can have problems with subs.

To me its a case by case thing. Sometimes I like the dub more like with the German Dub of Made in Abyss and the English dub fore modern Persona games. But HunterxHunter I found in japanese better. I disagree to the whole "japanesse voiceactors sound always better thing."
When I played Persona Q2 which has no dub there was not a single voice I prefered over the english cast but several where I liked the English voices I knew from other Persona games more.
"Oh sorry i didn't meant to hurt your feelings. you're still trash tho."

Beautifully explained, your way of explaining things are gracious! 😌
AkameGaKillfan777 Right!?
Huh, interesting. I feel like I'm the opposite--that I'm so *bored* of english phrasing and english tropes that seeing Japanese ones feel fresh and interesting. Oftentimes I'll watch a show twice, once with subs and then once with dubs just so I can appreciate the slight difference in dialogue line choices.
I'm an old fart in my 20s.
When I saw Cowboy Bebop and Hellsing's dubs, my brain exploded with excitement.
When I listened to Kill La Kill's, I loved it even more.
Honestly I'm find with either option , I'd usually would pick dub whenever its an option , but when it isn't I'll settle sub .
I love both, but the one I watch depends on the version I find first.
For example, for Hyperdimension Neptunia, I found the dub first and so now I watch it in English and play the games in English too.
But, for No Game No Life, I found the sub first and so I just watch that.
Exactly!
Funny enough, I used to hate both audio tracks for Neptunia. But the dub overall gels with me more. I respect the Japanese voices, but it's one of the few series where I don't prefer both languages.
Thank you that me with most of my anime
You know, I'm surprised no one on the sub side is bringing up the biggest argument against dubs, and that's the incredibly repetitive voice actor pool. That's why I appreciate some diversification of the VA pools in recent years, in particular, the dub voice actor for Zenitsu. He's completely new, and he freaking carried the entire dub on his shoulders.

The Flaming Freezer, Be gone.
Just to reiterate something I said on Facebook a couple of weeks ago:
Back in the old days, Anime was poorly translated and poorly dubbed by the sort of low-rent actors who did it as just another job like dubbing foreign porn.
And they should also ditch the subtitles too. 🤭

Crazy.
Subtitles also ruin the comedic timing of jokes. I've often thought "hey, that would have been hilarious if I hadn't already read the punchline".
It's probably wishful thinking, but imagine if subtitles only made words appear on the screen as they were being spoken, rather than full sentences, like how video games do it.
Oh wait, "sub perfect, dub trash" my bad.

If it's comics or a book, you can laugh at it. But it's really hard when you watch a foreign animated show with a subtitle, since they can also lose the humor of the moment. I think the Joker put it best:

Ghost Stories is amazing "It could never be! Not because you’re a rabbit, but because you’re black."

“All the Japanese female voice actors have voices that are very coquettish and wanting male attention, which was not what we wanted at all."
In any case, he adds, who is to say that a subtitled print is any more authentic? "When you watch the subtitled version you are probably missing just as many things. There is a layer and a nuance you're not going to get. Film crosses so many borders these days. Of course it is going to be distorted." ]

I like dubbed for the reason that you get to watch the whole screen and experience all of the art instead of only the bottom of the screen
I try watching sub but hate having to rewind cuz I miss the action due to reading the words. It why I do like dub more
How close are people sitting if they can't read the text while seeing the whole screen?
According to the voice actor of Brock, the 4Kids "americanization" was mostly done for international audiences, not just for America
Say what?
That makes sense since many times 4Kids bought the rights for an anime it was valid not just in North America but pretty much the entire American continent and even parts of Europe, and considering how certain american sensibilities are also shared with many occidental countries i guess you can see where this is going. I live in Brazil and back then many our local dubs were based on the 4Kids edited versions and english scripts due to them having full international rights over them, so basically a dub of a dub.
People other than Americans like Jelly-filled Donuts? No way!
My beef with Crunchyroll is that I want a "forward or back 10 seconds" option in case I miss something.

The Flaming Freezer The Flaming Freezer The Flaming Freezer, Be gone xenophobe.
The voice acting in that show is phenomenal
from my experience this issue goes away with time once you begin to familiarize yourself with the other language
Cowboy Bebop, Ghost Stories) or the voice actor/voice actress in the dub version is better than the original Japanese actor/actress or vice-versa.

for me, it depends on what sounds the most.. "natural". sometimes (and most of the time), i think the voice acting in the subs sound the best. however, there are rare moments when i prefer the voice acting in the dub- and while i can't think of any anime off the top of my head, this can be applied to japanese games i really like, persona 5 and the danganronpa series. neither have bad subs, i just think the dubs sound incredible.
I watch my Anime Dubbed, but if I can't find a dub for a series or if a dub doesn't exist, I'll suck it up and watch it Subbed

Even Studio Trigger loved the dub so much that they decided to make a limited theatrical release of Promare... in English.
@@zusfrankenstein8561 But there typically isn't stilted delivery, at least not in any of the shows I watch.
@@zusfrankenstein8561 Additionally, when I read a manga, I hear it in my head as the characters talking. For me, reading manga is a lot more similar to watching dubbed anime-- all the same visuals but with the voices in English.

You don't need to memorize every specific word in a dialogue chain, all you need to do is get a general gist of what they're saying and the voice acting will carry the rest of the scene for you.
that makes sense for a dub watcher, people who watch sub don't really have an issue with that probably cause were used to it and we prefer the original (superior) version or show
FLCL has an amazing dub, same with Paranoia Agent, both shows I would much rather watch dubbed than subbed

The emotions and tone voice is the same whether you know the language or not. The voice acting in anime is exaggerated compared to how real people speak, but I would assume everyone knows that. So what could possibly make her think they're not as good as she thought?
@@zahraa4149
Since most anime watchers don't speak Japanese, it's easy for them to say "dubs are terrible". But if you don't speak Japanese, you cannot determine with any degree of accuracy whether the acting is any good. And please, spare me the hooie about how you can just tell by how well the actors emote. Any actor can emote. Emoting is one part of acting.
They still censored the death of characters in sonic X and the music too is bad for the dub :( and man what they did to the tails scene. At least the french dub was closer to the original Japanese version.
Yes. They were pretty bad.
Ranging from Polkamon to [EPISODE MISSING].
Sonic X was already a lousy show, but 4Kids made it even worse.
@@EightThreeEight Yeah that one was a funny edit I mean like come on 4kids lol XD
I love 4kidz dubs because of how hilarious and memeable they are.
Sometimes changes are necessary, and sometimes they can make things a lot better.
While I don't have a problem with subs existing, I personally just can't stand to watch something subbed for two reasons:
1. Nobody watches something to read the spoken dialogue
and
2. If there's a big dramatic reveal in a piece of dialogue, It kinda lessens the dramatic punch to me if i have to quickly read it instead of hearing it at the same time the characters do.
Agreed
this one comment on another video mentioned that it ruins the joking parts since you’ve already read the punchline
The Yugioh dub is literally the abridged version.
Edit: GX specifically
Ps, Chazz is the best character
Yugioh GX maybe.
Its definitely close lol yugioh subbed is a damm thrill ride
Oh my God, a giant rock!
