Miriam In China I had my first mooncake this year as it is my first Mid-Autumn festival living in China! I had a preserved strawberry one...it wasn’t my favorite but I think I’d like to try more traditional ones next year!! 🥮
I had to watch this video three times. It’s amazing. As a former TV show producer in NYC, I saw something in this video that I’ve never been able to do. And that’s to make a video that sincere speaks from the heart. It’s so evident in all your videos. Your channel is truly unique, and that deserves some type of award. Furthermore, I’m amazed by how you organized this video. First you give an introduction, then go into the cooking, attain mother-in-law’s view of tradition, followed by your husband’s childhood story, then around 8:15 - 10:22 you slowed the music down and played with the darkness filming the kids playing at night, and finally concluded with a spousal conversation about tradition. I really enjoyed it. Of all the international couples on RUclips channels, yours is the most meaningful from the perspective of family love. All the while I’m content with the quality of the video. The colors are superb. I see that you used the SONY a5100 and a6400 - great cameras. Keep up the great work editing.
Hi George, thank you for sharing your view. It's great to get a professional perspective of Miriam's videos. I've been drawn to her videos and their extraordinary love story!
Sometimes the internet feels like a mean and dark place, and then I watch your videos and I see how very very good it can be too. Thank you for sharing this. Your mother-in-law is such a gem and I feel such fondness for her, even though I’ve never met her. May these traditions always be passed down. Thank you. ❤️

What a wonderful video! What a wonderful family! Greetings from the UK. May all good things come to you all. Thank you for sharing your fascinating experiences. (I write as a 70 year old American married for 45 years to an Englishman. May your marriage be as happy and long, and may you all prosper.
It is so heartwarming to see the kindness of your mother-in-law showing you how to prepare mooncakes. Please keep making your wonderful videos, they show a very personal, human side of China!
Miriam - I found your channel today on RUclips and I am so happy watching your videos. I love your family. I looked up to find out where is Qinghai and it is so good to see the traditional mooncakes of Qinghai. My family comes from Chaoshan 潮汕 and we too have our own traditional mooncakes which I make on Mid-autumn Festival. I love watching how much your husband loves you and your most beautiful son. Thank you for sharing.
I really enjoy these videos. First because you and your family really feel happy and content , i love that! Also the relationship of the whole family seems so loving, patient, respectful and sweet all around. Your momma in law is so sweet as you! Thank you for showing us alm rhe delicious food and bits of your life. Blessings!
I am a Chinese, we know there are two different kind of mooncakes, su and guang. I never never see or kind of hear any one telling this mooncake. It’s so awesome to know it, and you video it, don’t let this tradition washed away. I like you and your whole family. That’s the true meaning of life. We or some of us lost it.
I understand the fear of loosing traditional foods. My father’s family is Hungarian. When my grandmother passed away many recipes were lost. As a child and teen she would tell me to watch her cook, make pasta and breads and pastries from scratch. I thought I’d never need to do it myself. I also lost the language. My father refused to speak it as he wanted his kids to be fully American. My kids are older now 22 and 18. They have zero interest in any of our family heritage. I hate that I lost it. I was the oldest grandchild and spent most of my free time with my grandparents. I feel like it was my duty to carry those things forward to my kids. I can cook many items but some of the things are completely lost. Making a point of remembering or writing it down will help it go forward. Even if you can only approximate ingredients and amounts. It will help you figure them out in the end if necessary. Beautiful tradition!
That's what makes RUclips great - being able to videotape it - how you or or your mother or grandmother does something traditional, and saving it and sharing it!
Good to see different forms of mooncake, here in Singapore our mooncake is also a bit different. Chinese culture is so rich, no matter where it is. Best wishes from Singapore
I love your statement about passing traditional methods down to anyone who wants to learn and not just limiting it to women or young girls. And I really enjoyed watching this video, what a heartwarming experience, and the cakes look so good!
Hi Miriam, I love the peaceful nature of these videos. I find that you, Yonghang and your mother in law are so gently spoken and so along with the music makes for beautiful videos. I love to see Yonghang with his nephew out making mischief, giggling as they ‘acquire’ fruit. I love your family.
That is such a sweet video of you making mooncakes with your mother-in-law and even your father-in-law participating! And I have only watched maybe 4 of your videos since finding your channel yesterday, but this is the first time I heard your husband say something in English and it was "junk food!" Lol! And I agreed with him. I also agreed that Sansan can learn to make mooncakes too, and maybe your daughter-in-law won't want to!
Miriam, very nice video, thanks. Your video makes me recall my childhood memory in Jiangxi province. The Mid Autumn Day is the second important day next to the China New Year. In my hometown, we don't have the game of stealing offering to the moon, but we also will offer some food to the moon, like moon cake, orange, pomelo. It's a very very happy festival.
Just ran across this video today. I have a Chinese Indonesian friend who mentioned moon cakes to me in the course of conversation. I discovered a local Asian market that had them in stock. While they are not the same as home-made, it's very hard to find mooncakes of any kind in Southwest Missouri, USA!!! I found the commercial red bean mooncakes and they are tasty! One friend compared mooncakes to the traditional Christmas fruitcakes given as presents during the Christmas holiday season. Like fruitcake, some people really enjoy the taste and others would rather give it away!!! Thanks for your video! All the best!
Watching from London , UK.I really enjoy watching your mother-in-law's interaction, she looks so homely and you seem to have a good relationship. I like her stories
Happy mid autumn festival, I have only celebrated with my wife and family in Guangzhou and they are the small sweet machine cakes. The cakes you made and steamed are so beautiful, I am very pleased that your mother in law has accepted you and is teaching you the traditional ways of her village which seem to be getting lost with moving to the city's. There is no way we could make such beautiful cakes as as our biggest steam baskets are only 18-22cm and just no room to go bigger. Love your videos as it is obvious you are loving your life.
those are not called "sweet machine cakes", those are traditional cantonese style mooncake. of course they are very different from the Qinghai ones since these two places are far away
Rick, thank you for the clarification, I was only going by her statement of city machine made cakes and it is obvious the ones I have had are not homemade even in a local bakery.
Miriam id like to thank you for posting such a lovely video! It is quite rare to see such genuine Chinese rural happiness on youtube when people now are pursuing a city modern life. This is the real part of China that have a deep mark to generations of people in heart, the preservation of the essence of home.... Thank you for the openmindness and sharing. i wish some day i’ll find a partner that embrace my culture like you too.
Very lovely recording of your mother- in- law's making of these special moon cakes. It reminded us very much of our childhood days during these festive seasons. The special foods, the unique practices of the tradition during the festive seasons are very meaningful. Chinese used to value many of these festive seasons. *These traditions helped to bring family closer together*. Offering foods to the moon, kids having fun under the moonlight, reminded me of 七巧筇, another tradition that is disappearing in today modern world. Miriam, keep up the good work, it is very touching that you are learning all these from your mother-in-law who still remember these traditional practices. From your videos, we all can see that you have a very closely knitted family.
Thanks Miriam for producing this video. I don't think there would be any way I could've seen this side of rural china. Being of chinese descent being raised in california, it was really cool to see that experience and reminded me that i have some little village home town over in Kinmen that probably has their own traditions that I have absolutely no idea about. Gives me some inspiration to visit in the near future and ask a ton of questions.
Miriam. Watching you learn all these traditions from your MIL is really heartwarming. The living relationship between you and your husband is reason enough to have a renewed sense of hope in love and caring between people from different parts of the world. May your life in your new country be a long and happy one. Thank you Miriam for joy and love you show us in all your videos. 😍😍😍
Even if the next generation in your family doesn't learn to make Qinghai mooncakes, you're preserving them right here. By documenting and sharing it, as long as we have the internet, you're making it so Sansan's generation and future generations see how to make them and keep it alive. Please don't discount yourself from it. ☺️ Happy mid-autumn festival to you and your family!
Making traditional food with mother-in-law is lovely! Seeing Qinghai Mooncake is a first time for me. Never heard of the custom of Qinghai kids stealing mooncake & goodies either. Officially sanctioned mischief! Sounds like Halloween trick-or-treat in North America. So much of Qinghai culture to discover. Thanks.
Your mother in law seems like such a lovely person. The moon cakes look fabulous. I'm trying to retrieve old traditions ... actually I think I'll make a better effort in 2021. So important 🌼🌸🌼 but I like to weave in traditions from other places too, keeps it interesting 🌼🌸🌼
i stumbled upon this channel this morning, and i had watched a total of 10 videos by now. Every video is well shot, edited and documented. It makes me reflect on the purpose of life and how life should be lived. It takes great patience, consideration, forgiveness to build a strong and happy family. I can feel and see these qualities in each of the videos you made. Thanks for being such a good example to all! Repect!!
I love watching your perspectives of family life in rural China. It’s so soulful and humbling. Your mother-in-law is wonderful. It kinda reminds me of my mother when she talks about traditions and her childhood. My mom’s hometown is a big metropolis city now in China but she still think back the good old days when traditional activities and simpler times.
Aww you guys are so sweet. You can tell he loves her but he's really shy when it comes to showing affection in public so he pulls away from your kiss. This is so much more interesting than watching Chinese women who married Western men showing off sandwiches and toasts. Please keep your videos coming as I can't get enough of them :o)
What a adorable family!.....btw, who gave a thumbs down? So negative! Must be some lonely human being hide behind the computer and jealous of somebody’s happiness!
It's a free world - as much as you loved to belittle other people - the cyber world is not a communist China - people were given to right to express their opinions just like you - like or dislike
Alex Aez wow such a ass, we are pretty free but not in a western perspective, don’t force other people think about freedom as you, so pathetic and that is not freedom
@@alexaez3567 hi Alex, totally agree with you for the first half sentence, which is ppl should have the freedom to like or dislike anything (as long as its legal) But i dont think you were being respectful and open minded about china or communist countries. China or the commusit is just a different system of govening. Its not perfect just like all other systems. You can like it or dislike it. But only the people who live or lived there can judge.
I just found your channel, and I am so glad I have. Family, culture, traditions and food are so important. If fear, like you, that these arts will disappear. Please thank your mother-in-law for sharing her traditions with us. She had such a kind face and gentle eyes. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Thanks for sharing this. I’m from China and visited Qinghai many years ago, but had never seen this kind of moon cake before. Very interesting and cute!
I love this. Traditions being handed down like this. I have been learning so much about the Asian culture by watching subtitles movies and episodes of ancient China action and romance movies. I love the art I love the buildings I love the way they talk and foods I've been watching some of them eat but it's been mainly I guess they're real pretty moon cakes. So I have definitely learned a lot by watching your video that you took of your mother-in-law. She seems like a very sweet lady
Hello from Singapore! I have recently just came across your channel & has been binge watching every single videos! It’s so good & heartwarming to watch. Please continue to do more videos!
I thought they have been done some QnA video before. Her mother in law tell her that back then she didnt get a good response from her mother in law, so she doesnt want her daughter in law feel the same way like she was..
I watched this video with tearful eyes. It reminds me of the time my grandma cooking for our family. Here’s something more than just food and crafts, it seems to me. The simple ways of life need to be defended in this materialistic society. Thanks for such a beautiful video!
love love your videos .. in the early stages of planning a trip to china for a month .. your mother in law seems like she is an awesome person .. greetings from Canada
Therapeutic and educational content, great watch. I'm Chinese and I don't even know this past of Qinghai tradition. The husband is also such a non pretentious person. The 偷part reminds me of Trick or Treat in US and Canada Halloween! Keep up with the good work!
My great grandmother told me to pass on her recipes to people in my life, that way they are never lost. My mother - in law gave me her family's favorite one's. Now i make them for my family and most of them have made there way into my local county cook book.
How to preserve traditions? Nowadays, it is easy. Just record everything on videos (recipes, how to make it, get it, mix it, blend it, cook it, eat it, etc.) and post it to the internet, like youtube here... and it will last forever. Also many more people outside of the traditional enclaves will learn how to make them. More than that, your children and children's children will be able to watch you or your mom doing it a hundred years from now. Cheers!
On a more superficial level yes, but there's also the deeper understanding of a culture's philosophy, teachings, aesthetics, moral system etc, that can only be acquired by immersing yourself in the culture through reading, watching cinematic productions, and talking to people.
Wow, qinghai mooncake looks so different from the Cantonese style. Well, they both are round for the occasion for sure. Also, you guys are so sweeeeeet! Hope you many autumn festivals making mooncakes together.
I couldn’t stop smiling, I love how you film. And I’m scared as well, I feel like when the world has so many problems to face and everything is moving so fast- that old traditions will be lost. My bestemor is from Norway and I’m American and I often feel this way where I’m afraid everything she taught me I will forget! 😔 Even then when I make her dishes it’s just not the same haha but this is so lovely! I never knew that mooncakes were also this big, I love learning about these traditions. And seeing your family together like that was heartwarming! I hope you all have a lovely day!
Happy Mid Autumn Festival. Your husband is right about traditions keeping us closer to nature. May you and your family live happily together. Lots of love to you, your husband, Sansan and your in-laws ❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful , happy mid autumn festivals , yesterday my grandson went on lantern parades from middle school and past through the mall for one kilometers always and turned back to school and they get gifts from the school sponsors
OMG .. what an amazing video, such a quality production ... the kids sneaking into the yards at night to steal the fruit and mooncakes , how precious ! amazing job Miriam .. you have a new subscriber from Canada !
This kind of mooncake is a little bit special. It is very interesting.I have never seen that before. I think China is very big and different regions have different cultures. Once you can accept and respect other cultures from different places , you can really enjoy the meanings in this video.
your videos are so pleasant to watch and i really enjoy that you're so kind and hard-working. im latina and engaged to a cantonese boy and im so envious of your skill with mandarin! i cant hear ANY tones let alone the many that mandarin has. please continue uploading, your videos make me so happy :)
Oh, what a channel, I'm really impressed by your courage and open-mind to experience a life that is so different from your original home. As far as I know about my home province Qinghai, its somewhat less developed region even inside China. Not comparable to the eastern part of China, not to mention the developed country like Sweden. So my first thought about you to live in Qinghai is "No way", the life there would appears intolerable to the citizen from a country where the average income maybe 20 times more. But thought out your video, I only find optimism and enjoyment. You really impressed me about that, I know it would be initially very hard to accustom to the dramatic shift, but you can always find the bright side of your life, and that is the spirit I really appreciate! Thank you
Very interesting about the moon cakes and the regional differences. I live in rural northwestern Minnesota. Parents came from rural southern China. Unfortunately for our generation we have lost our spoken dialect and have intermarried too! English/Spanish spoken here! Oh yes occasionally during Christmas there is lutefisk, julkakke, lefse,(Norwegian)at some restaurants. Thank you again for a glimpse of rural China.
As a Chinese, I do hope one day you will direct a movie about the RURAL CHINA, showing the world that actually the kind people here are actually living a good life, and you can have kind friends here as well. I don't see so much neutral and positive news about China when I am abroad, so I will appreciate if you can do that finally. PS: You have an amazing family, congratulations! Hope you enjoy the life here all the time.
Thanks so much for sharing with us the Qinghai mooncake! What an amazingly big and beautiful steamed type of mooncake! I have never seen these before today so thank you for showing the beautiful process and traditions involved in 中秋 in Qinghai.
There is a RUclips channel called 我们的小喜, it’s a fairly new channel, the creator of that channel is a Chinese man, he handcrafted a lot of things, use wood or bamboo or metal, he use these materials make stone pot, steamer and even oven the traditional way! I was really happy someone does this, recording and sharing these techniques, then it won’t go away:) I really like the vibe of your family, when I watching your video, I realized that I smiled the whole time.谢谢你的分享:) And 中秋快乐!
My wife makes ours with red bean paste, walnuts , chestnuts and even rose petals. Your steam bun variety look amazing and so yummy, I'll see if she can make some. Thanks. xo.
Your family’s traditional moon cake is different. I am use to the store bought moon cake with lotus paste and duck egg yolks. I agree the old traditions are dying off. I remember my mom making Chinese sticky rice in bamboo leaves but nowadays the younger generation have no idea on how to make them from scratch. I hope Sansan continue with your husband’s village traditions. BTW, are you wearing contact lens? You look very natural without glasses. Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!!!
Exactly what I think...many versions of mooncakes...this one is more like steamed buns. Bakpao we call it. In Indonesia we also hv tong chiu pia...is Indonesian mooncakes. Of course I prefer the one with egg yolks n lotus(white n red)
Greetings from Malaysia. This is an eye opener for me to discover Qinghai mooncake is different from traditional mooncake. In Malaysia, we have mooncakes filled with durian paste. Cheers!

Even if the next generation in your family doesn't learn to make Qinghai mooncakes, you're preserving them right here. By documenting and sharing it, as long as we have the internet, you're making it so Sansan's generation and future generations see how to make them and keep it alive. Please don't discount yourself from it. ☺️
Happy mid-autumn festival to you and your family!
What a beautiful tradition that must not be forgotten ❤
There couldn’t be anything more universal than the laughter of children 🎉
Miriam, thank you so much for making this video!!!
i stumbled upon this channel this morning, and i had watched a total of 10 videos by now.
Thank you Miriam for delivering the beautiful and meaningful messages to the world. You Rock 💪
Those moon cakes look amazing! Beautiful
What a loving couple! They not only embrace each other but also their cultures too.
From what we see here, his mom raised such a good man. Kudos to his mama.
SnowyGrl11 his momma is so kind that’ s why the son is kind and gentle too, much love and affection
Thank you for sharing. Qinghai moon cakes are a class of its own. You and your mum in law made it look so simple.
Always happy to see the smiles from your video. So genuine, so true.
Hello from Singapore! I have recently just came across your channel & has been binge watching every single videos! It’s so good & heartwarming to watch. Please continue to do more videos!
Your mother in law is so nice. Usually when you prepared food with a mother in law, the person usually will be scolded upside down
I thought they have been done some QnA video before. Her mother in law tell her that back then she didnt get a good response from her mother in law, so she doesnt want her daughter in law feel the same way like she was..
@@viensoe7966 I see. I am a new viewer. I didn't follow her story
Chinese mother-in-laws can be horrible.
This family is different.
@sean you are so true !
Love to see the love you share with your family members. The simple game and happiness. Love from US.
The children 'stealing' the mooncakes and fruit remind me of Tricks or Treats at Halloween here
Thanks for sharing. I’m originally from China and I’ve never seen anything like this before. I would love to try traditional Chinese mooncakes
Best wife, best daughter in law, best mom, wishing happiness for ever
Love ur mom in law positive vibes in her thoughts and in her life. God blessed all of u.
I am loving your channel so much! Beautiful family! So inspiring!! Thanks for sharing 😃🙌💖
Lovely traditions in Qinghai and a very heartwarming video! ❤️ I loved your little chat at the end of the video. 😄
That little chat is the best part of the video.. Happy mid autumn festival.
That little chat is the best part of the video.. Happy mid autumn festival.
Cheers!
But we need skill too. And a first hand experience to kniw that the texture, taste, is right and as traditional as supposed to
On a more superficial level yes, but there's also the deeper understanding of a culture's philosophy, teachings, aesthetics, moral system etc, that can only be acquired by immersing yourself in the culture through reading, watching cinematic productions, and talking to people.
Recording recipes on social media, is not preserving tradition.
@@andylaque exactly
It's a beautiful thing to carry on traditions, we need more of this.
Happy Mid Autumn Festival. Your husband is right about traditions keeping us closer to nature. May you and your family live happily together. Lots of love to you, your husband, Sansan and your in-laws ❤️❤️❤️
so kind so sweet, very good video, best wishes for you.
Beautiful , happy mid autumn festivals , yesterday my grandson went on lantern parades from middle school and past through the mall for one kilometers always and turned back to school and they get gifts from the school sponsors
Miriam, wish u have a happy long weekend in China. Happy mooncake festival
Thank, and the same to you!
It’s mid autumn festival actually lol not mooncake
I enjoyed this so much!! The children giggling and the smiles made me joyous!!
OMG .. what an amazing video, such a quality production ... the kids sneaking into the yards at night to steal the fruit and mooncakes , how precious ! amazing job Miriam .. you have a new subscriber from Canada !
Your mother in law is so artistic. I love the cute flowers and snake she made.
This video was so genuinely beautiful to watch. Thank you.
You're a great example of a positive and holesome outlook on life. Love how you're close to the mom in law.
This kind of mooncake is a little bit special. It is very interesting.I have never seen that before. I think China is very big and different regions have different cultures. Once you can accept and respect other cultures from different places , you can really enjoy the meanings in this video.
Aw, you guys are just too cute together! Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!
What a lovely family, I have a warm feeling when I watch your video.
...awww this reminds me of baking with family in Norway...making tyske shiver and fyrstekake...so very special creating like this...
Aw, I don't even know what that is! But making traditional food is always special!
your videos are so pleasant to watch and i really enjoy that you're so kind and hard-working. im latina and engaged to a cantonese boy and im so envious of your skill with mandarin! i cant hear ANY tones let alone the many that mandarin has. please continue uploading, your videos make me so happy :)
You really impressed me about that,
I know it would be initially very hard to accustom to the dramatic shift, but you can always find the bright side of your life, and that is the spirit I really appreciate! Thank you
热爱生活的人到哪里都会是幸福的
,祝福Miriam
看到這影集想起小時候媽媽做糕點的情景!感謝
Thanks so much for sharing with us the Qinghai mooncake! What an amazingly big and beautiful steamed type of mooncake! I have never seen these before today so thank you for showing the beautiful process and traditions involved in 中秋 in Qinghai.
The best video I've seen in 2020, what a lovely family ! 🇸🇪🇨🇳🇹🇼
As home grown Chinese , I never heard of this kind of moon cake, looks yummy!
i subscribed! You guys are so humble and authentic.
Nothing is more wondrous than a mother preparing a food for the family.
There is a RUclips channel called 我们的小喜, it’s a fairly new channel, the creator of that channel is a Chinese man, he handcrafted a lot of things, use wood or bamboo or metal, he use these materials make stone pot, steamer and even oven the traditional way! I was really happy someone does this, recording and sharing these techniques, then it won’t go away:)
I really like the vibe of your family, when I watching your video, I realized that I smiled the whole time.谢谢你的分享:) And 中秋快乐!
Great video about the moon cake. I also enjoyed your mid autumn festival video last year. It’s really great that you’re documenting these traditions.
Such a wonderful family!!! THANKYOU for sharing the magic of your family - with us that are alone & older.
青海傳統月餅,這是文化的傳承
好感動,這種製作花朵圖騰月餅的手藝
可用手工藝術文化之美,很有內涵的影片
謝謝米粒精心拍攝上傳分享,很棒的內容。
Cheers!
Haha, I can't eat durian! Do you like it?
@@MiriamFollin Fresh durian is tasty but not in mooncake. For mooncake, I prefer red bean paste.
