How To Dethatch and Overseed a Lawn - Greenworks Dethatcher

- In this video I'll be showing you how to dethatch and overseed a lawn using the Greenworks Dethatcher. This is my second project with this Greenworks Dethatcher and it works great to remove the thatch and keep the existing grass intact. I also overseeded the lawn after dethatching with a little bit of Jumpstart Kentucky Bluegrass to see if we can add a new variety of kentucky bluegrass to my backyard.

For those asking about grass seed, here’s what I recommend - ryanknorrlawncare.com/product-category/grass-seed/
Could all that thatch in my lawn be the reason why my manual reel mower doesn't work anymore ???
Meaning, it can't be pushed for more than a couple of feet before it gets stuck on the grass.
I'll really appreciate your response. And thankful that I found your channel, keep up the good work 👍👍👍
What sprinkler did you use to water your lawn at the end of the video?
Any problems with that size cord with that machine? In their manual it states to use a 12 Gauge cord up to 50 foot, and not to use anything over that.
drops $100 worth of seed, hopes "a little bit of this takes hold" LOL I think we can all relate.
Are you in a 4 season climate?
If you have snow cut low, dethatch fall fertilize then just before snow seed the shit out of your lawn/ 25kg/ 50lb bag and let the snow do the work...then a month or 6 weeks into spring hit it with Scotts Max Green.
@@GrandNational66 I’m in Minnesota, when should I lay down the fertilizer and how long can I wait before seeding? It’s early October now.
@@DirtyJobsGuy1 Scotts fall fertilizer the red bag rotary set to 3.5 on spreader = 2 applications mid Sept mid Oct.
I seed just before snow fall...1st week of Nov..no germination till spring providing it contacts the ground...grass must be short and well power raked.
I hope you realize that if you work your way towards the end of the yard and not towards the power outlet this extension cord will never be in your way.
Good tip. I’ll try this next time I mow my lawn. I’m so tired of tossing the cord out of my way.
I was thinking the exact same thing!
Also, the cord shouldn’t be all twisted up like that either. Maybe a video on how to properly coil extension cords.
Excellent review. No attitude. No gimmicks. Good editing in condensing a lot of detailed information. I’ll buy one.
I agree
and some sweet video timing to the music cues 👌🏻
This is the video that brought me to this channel, and here I am still watching after over two years.
9:51 Your entire neighborhood must hate you
LOL I was thinking the same thing.
Lol
Ryan I purchased the Green works dethatcher and love it. My yard is roughly 5 thousand square feet and this little green monster pulled up enough thatch to fill a full size pickup truck. It never gave me a problem and never over heated. Thanks for the recommendation 👍
Does anyone have a comparison of the Greenworks vs Sun Joe dethatcher? I have seen both recommended in different videos, seem pretty similar
just bought my green works dethatcher and can't wait to test it! thought about trying the sun joe for the scarifier but i was able to get a really good price on the green works. lookin foward to messin up my yard :)
Another great video! Just a note...according to the manual, for the height adjustment, the number at the BOTTOM of the wheel, not at the top, is the height where it is set.
That’s what I came here to say. I thought I was crazy.
That’s a long day of work. Best part is the chair, beer, and watching the grass grow 👍
You've got that right!
@@ryanknorrlawncare Or, ... grass with your grass? heh heh heh
I don’t even care about my lawn that much, just wondering what a dethatcher was.
I've asked for this for Christmas three years in a row. My wife doesn't think it's fun enough of a gift so she never buys it for me.
Stephen awww
Legit made me sad
Haha, I bought one for myself but this still resonates with me. If I ask my wife for something very specific as a holiday gift... it doesn't quite work out. "No, no I really do want this specifically, and will enjoy it throughly!"
I’d love a husband to do yard work with!! A Greenworks detchatcher would get us both “excited” for Christmas!
Been married 30 years and my hubs has bought me power tools for my birthdays. Maybe that’s why we’re still together 🤔
Hey Ryan! How often should I thatch my lawn? I just bought and used a pull-behind dethatcher to my midwestern lawn two weeks ago - the first time in 10 years. Is this a seasonal task? Does it depend on how thick the lawn is? Thanks in advance...
If you start on the house side of your lawn and work away from the house, the power cord won't be in your way every time you turn around.
Yep I will do that next time for sure.
Work away from the power outlet, or get a petrol version!🤣
Hi Rayn, can you do a video on the difference between a dethatcher and a scarifier. Not clear on the difference.
I think the scarifier uses heavier steel blade instead of the thin and flexible wire prongs.
9:51 total domination!
for reals! I wonder how many hours a week he spends on his lawn. Just looks amazing and healthy!!!
That's a damn fine lawn! Putting the Jones to shame!
I was thinking the whole time - "How stressful would it be to live next to this guy?".
I just bought this dethatcher on amazon and expect in within a week. I laid down a pre-emergent on the lawn about 3 weeks ago (didn't expect to buy this) - should I wait to use the dethatcher or can I use it as soon as it arrives? Thanks!
I know I am getting old when I spent hours on Ryan's channel
Ryan...Live in Michigan..love you channel. just de-thatched...Do you not recommend plugging or slice seeding? Is a channel or hole not needed for the grass seed to germinate? Am I ok with just cutting my lawn low then over seeding?
What do you put down after overseeding? Fertilizer? Peat moss?
Professional quality video. Nicely done.
I heard the Sun Joe dethatcher/scarifier was similar but overall a better performing machine..Can you do a comparison? Please and Thanks for the awesome content.
Unless they changed the way it works since I bought mine, you described the height settings the opposite of the way it works. The height setting is written on the bottom (text is right side up) of the dial.
Checked it again today and the way mine reads directly on the side of the machine is how I described it in the video. Possibly they did change it from the past? I don't really have a way of knowing.
Amazing video...great job. Love the care u give your lawn.
Thank you for sharing your expertise....👏👏👏👏
Ryan, how often should I dethatch my lawn? Thanks for the great video.
About Every second year depending on your lawn
I think the rule of thumb is when your thatch exceeds 1/2 inch ... and how often that happens would depend on grass type along with a few other factors. Regardless of the amount of thatch you have, if you have a KBG lawn and are attempting to overseed, definitely de-thatch ... seed to soil contact.
9:52, that picture says it all. 😎
I bought the same machine 3 days ago. It does work amazing. I then went over my lawn with the lawnmower but it didn’t really pick up the thatch. I got one bag collected. Next day the lawn looked dull. Lots of leftover thatch was sitting on top. I ended up having to rake my lawn and got another 2 bags!
Any reason why my mower didn’t pick it up? What did I do wrong?
Thanks for this video Ryan, i now realise i dont really need to cover with top soil after over-seeding as i previously thought
Just bought a greenworks dethatcher…knew this was then place to go for the 411. Thx!
Those editing skills though!

I’ going to buy one soon.
That bluegrass 😍. I'm excited to see that bluegrass germinate.
Gotta love the bluegrass! Can't wait for it to pop again and then I'll probably hit it with some iron and we'll be striping like there's no tomorrow. Man, I'm a nerd.
Good video I bought a house late last summer and the yard is awful. I'll be watching lots of your videos for tips.
What happended to your shed???
Why did you remove it???
Where is it???
Where do you put all your tools, machines, chemicals, etc???
I'm looking to do this myself, thank you for great video explaining what to do. I have a few questions though. Do I need to be concerned when cutting the grass? Should I add some soil before or after the seeding or not at all? If I should add soil is there a good spreader I could use for it? I'm looking to do my entire lawn and if there's a better way to do it then by hand. I looked online and saw the Global™ Universal Spreader 100 Lb. Capacity and it might be useful. Thanks again for your hard work to help out lawn newbies like me.
It works better if grass is shorter. I didn't do anything to add soil, just make sure the seed gets down into the bottom of the grass and touches the soil. A spreader is the best way to broadcast the seed as well.
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care Thank you for the reply. I was more concerned about cutting the grass after the new seed is down. How much time should I wait to cut the grass after the seed is down
As long as possible. Depends on the grass type and how quickly it comes in.
Since it's getting close to fall this is back on my mind. My lawn is Kentucky bluegrass. My plan is to dethatch, spread seed and then use a roller to roll peatmoss/dirt over it. My lawn gets a lot of sun and it seems like I have uneven spots so the the dirt/peat moss should help with keeping the seed damp and leveling off my yard. The roller should also help push the grass seed down and make good contact with the soil. I live in the midwest also and I was wondering when should I start then process, September or October? What do you think of my plan? Thanks in advance.
I forgot to ask about aeration. Should I dethatch and then have it done before I seed? Or should I not bother.
I am sold on a dethatcher! I have about the same size lawn you do and just tried doing it by hand...forget it! After two hours I wore my shoulders out and barely did an eighth of the yard. Checked them out at Lowe’s, same as yours for $115. Getting it next week when the unit arrives.
I think you'll be pleased how well these little machines work and are very easy to use.
Dethatcher was cool but broke after 4 uses on a medium size lawns… not worth the investment in my opinion.
Hi Ryan, when is the best time to detach the yard? We live in upstate N.Y.
Fall
You didn't mention where you're located, ballpark location in the Nation please, it'll help
Question: Would you recommend dethatching the grass being dry, moist, wet, etc?
Awesome and helpful videos - keep it up!
Damp. Dry will tear up the soil too much but if it’s soaking wet it’ll be a mess
@@johnb8956 - If it is too wet, it will pull out more live grass. Definitely agree the soil should have some moisture in it, definitely not bone dry. A couple of clear days after a good rain.
I have the same dethatcher and I find starting my runs closest to the place I plug the machine in and working away helps avoid manipulating the cord out of the way some.
Very good tip. I'll make sure to try that next time.
What brand and model is that white dethatcher and where to get it?
Ryan,. Can I dethatch and core aerate in same day or should I pick one or the other? Jeff in Ohio
After watching your video last year on dethatching I bought one from Amazon! Thanks for the tips man!!!
Awesome! Glad I could help. That little machine does a great job for the price.
If I want to overseed an old lawn, should I do dethatching or aeration, or both. Thanks
Stanley Ng both nigga
@@freeezzzyyoutube8891 😳🤣🤣🤣
Good video question when is the best time to do the dethacher. And mi grass is big like 4 inches right know is better cut the grass first or do with the dethacher machine.i live in virginia
the SunJoe works better...
Also make sure you start close to the plug and work away so you dont have to mess with it every pass.
Will dethatching pick up weeds as well?
I am confused by why this is called "dethatching" on RUclips. This is just removing loose and dead material from your lawn. While it's certainly good for your turf it has nothing to do with thatch.
You're confused by what is explained and mentioned before the 1 minute mark had even elapsed in the video?
starting next to the outlet and working away from it will keep the cord out of your way
Do you not lay down pre emergent? I would love to be able to oversees this spring but I’m prioritizing the pre emergent. Nice video man, keep them coming!
Nope for the past few years I haven't used any. I mainly just go for steps that get the grass as thick as possible and the weeds have been very minimal as a result.
Whether you use pre-emergent or not you should wait until the fall to seed. The grass may grow if seeded in the spring, but it won't have established roots by the time the heat kicks in. Planting in the fall gives the grass time to grow, then has a few more weeks to establish next spring before the heat.
Ryan, do you have time for 1 very important question about my lawn?
Excellent excellent thank you.
6 weeks ago I decide my lane needed much help and work. I found you and getting ready to go here.
But
Aeration? 20 years of no care just cutting.
Must amd will be thatch.
Is aeration critical to start with in this lawn makeover?
Thank You Ryan
Scott
Talk to me about leaves? Fall is leave time. Should we pick them up or mulch them into the ground? Should we over seed before or after the leaves drop down. Nobody talks leaves?
ruclips.net/video/1JYQ80fMRAk/видео.html
I have some burnt patches after using lockup fertilizer spread in the 3rd week of June, I’m going to dethatch with a rake & break up soil soil to weaken the lockup, apply soil, seed & peat moss in the patches apply water, cool season grass perennial rye mix ... should I are areate instead & over seed or just fix the patches
Ryan..this is Scott again...my lawn is established...looks good like yours..like I said..just de-thatched. got rid of the thatch..my next step was to either plug then over seed or plug then over seed...you didn't do either...am I ok with just over seeding like you did?
Yo bud! What sprinkler are you using at the end there?!
I don't know if they make all metal ones anymore but this is very close to it - amzn.to/2HSpoFU
Great video. Lots of info and no messing around. The metal base Gilmour impact is 167SMB. MB for metal base, PB for polymer base. I got one with the metal base for a birthday present a few years ago. Love it!
@@ryanknorrlawncare I have that Gilmour sprinkler. It's great. You can adjust the length of the spray as it rotates so that you don't water your neighbors yard if you wanted to set it close to the side of your yard for example.
Thatch also increases your chance of getting fungus and other lawn diseases too
I don’t get overseeding? When you reseed an area you are supposed to cover seed somewhat so it will germinate. Overseeding just lays it on top. Its not covered at all. Same with aerating and over seeding. 90% of the seeds are still sitting on top of the ground. Very few drop in the aeration holes.
I picked up a dethatch rake for my riding mower, it does an OK job to just drag it over the lawn. A single pass for light thatch. 3-4 passes for heavy thatch removal. I have never used a power dethatch machine as a DIY guy.
Thanks Ryan! No aeration after power raking? You went right to over seeding after power raking. I live in SW Kansas City, so very similar conditions.
Will this work with removing moss? Recently got a home and the yard is a mess. I wanna remove moss and aerate the lawn and put down new seed. What would be the best way to go about doing this? Living in upstate it's still freezing weather.
I've been mulching the last bag back into the lawn. Just spread it around and mow it, but it doesn't even need to be mulched, the lawn can absolutely break this down now. I try to return the last raked thatch because its usually the oldest debris from the deepest layer..
Wow, you lawn looks great (compared to your neighbors)! I just purchased my Greenworks Dethatcher. Hoping I do just as good a job like you!
How long does bluegrass take to germinate? I put some down on Labor Day this year and have yet to see a single blade emerge. And yes I water it 1-2 per day religiously!
At 3:01, are we sure that the top is what the setting is or the bottom? the greenworks manual and the picture to the right of the wheels I thought implied it was the bottom (the part that you don't have to read upside down? Ryan or anyone else, can you clarify?
Manual: www.greenworkstools.com/media/documents/27022_E.pdf
Do you recommend dethaching and aearting in early spring? I detached and aerated last october before I overseeded
How did that work out? I’m thinking of dethatching next week (SoCal)
It was awesome. Dethatching and core aeration is great right before u plan on overseeing. Do you have a dethatcher?
If I am going to detach and plug aerate, do I dethatch first?
great presentation and very easy to understand . thanks a million !~
Had to come back to this video cuz im doing this today haven't dethatched in 2 years..got my greenworks an your elite perennial rye ready 👍🌱
I have used one of these for the past three years, I like it better than the one you can rent from the big box stores. The rental one really destroyes your lawn and sprinkler heads if you hit them. You do need to make a few more passes, but lawn work is quiet time for me. Wife and kids leave me alone, because they are afraid I will ask them to help
That's more like power raking than dethatching tho
What type of sprinkler was that?
How many square feet is your backyard?
How may times would you have to move it to water your backyard?
Hey Ryan, how do you like the Scotts mini spreader? Im considering one but I hear that product gets trapped in the wheels and leads odd trails.
Amazon says it only draws 10 amps. So 16 ga cord should be fine.
Ryan, I apologize if I missed it in one of your videos... but when purchasing grass seed how can I tell what seed was used in my lawn? I live in northern Indiana so I know I would need something for cold seaons. I just do not want my lawn to have multiple colors (as I have never dethatched/over seeded before). My OCD will be terrible if I have all kinds of greens in my lawn!
Hey Ryan. Should you still water the grass if you have a thatch problem? I don't want to use a power rake until the fall so I can seed in the cooler weather. Thanks.
My turf needs to be thickened up this fall, and from what I’ve been reading I need to dethatch beforehand. Should I also core aerate at this time?
You're cute man.
😍😍😍
Does that dog bark when you try to make your videos?
I have one of these. Does seem to bog down at 3 inches, so I would recommend 2 inches. Take it from me though ... if your grass is trained for 3 or more inches, don't take it right down to 2 and then try to use this ... unless you plan to overseed. Lesson learned on a test patch. Get it down to 2 slowly and allow it to get accustomed to 2 inches before using this. I normally cut it at 2 in the fall anyway and 3 to 3.5 in the summer so I typically use 2-3 weeks sometime in August to get it back down to 2 in preparation for the fall. My mistake was going from 3 to 2 in one shot on a test area and then immediately de-thatching ... yeah, that didn't work so well ... that was an exercise in only the strongest grass survives. Great little machine though.
How many times of year should I detach my lawn?
Game 4 bucks vs Suns half time show!!!!!
Which grass catcher fits this model 27022 ?
If you started at the top of your lawn, you wouldn’t have to worry about running over the extension cord every time you finish a pass. I just bought one of these I’m a first time homeowner and gonna do this for the first time. It was very helpful video, thank you.
did both today even put down starter, hope its not to late its oct 14
Thanks for the video. Only tip I have is with a corded mower if you start at the house you won't have so much trouble moving the cord.
Huge Question! If you own a de thatcher how often should you use it? Say Northern state?,
Nice work bud. I just put up a video Dethatching a section of my property. Subbed. Working on a video doing soil testing now. Check em out.
A lot of the seed that I purchased is covered with a starter fertilizer. Do I still use an additional starter fertilizer?
Could you use an lawn overseeder? It seems as though the lawn overseeder would dethatch and sow the seed at the correct depth in the ground in one process.
Where you reccomend to get some kbg seed ? For Overseeding. My lawn is kbg and per rye mix
Hear the Westie's in the background. Classic "pay attention to me" bark. Love it.
Those are awesome dogs!
i like the idea of having a dethatcher, but a corded one seems like such a headache. How bad was it really to deal with the cord?
When is the best to dethatch in new jersey? I received conflicting info on the web.
Fall is ideal on a cool season grass
Looks like your did not wrap your wire properly. Using over-under method to prevent any konts
I've dethatched my yard. I'm about to put down the triple Scotts fertilizer. When can I seed the patchy spots from my dethatching after my fertilizing? And how long after that can I put down milorganite and the next scott turf builder lawn food? I live in Wisconsin. Similar weather.
I don't believe you can seed with the Scotts Triple as it has crabgrass preventer that would also prevent the seed from coming up. If you're seeding I would use the scotts starter with weed control - amzn.to/2GkNYxG
Great video but I must say your thumbnail makes you look like the bad guy from Heroes. 🤣🤣❤️
Ryan, when you get a chance, can you do a review of the Stihl Yard Boss mm 56 with the dethatcher attachment? Thanks. Here's a sample but it is so short and they gave no review of it but seemed like it is really pulling it. Would like to get your thought on it to see if it is worthwhile.

hello there what is the difference between (power raking vs dethatching) thank you
Power raking is usually done with a gas powered machine that tends to be more aggressive...this electric tool I'm using does a great job but also leaves the existing grass with limited damage.
