I live in Boise Idaho, temps are over 100 right now, in July. I know I have to wait for it to cool down before I use my dethatcher but man I can't wait. I have a big lawn that faces out to a golf course. I need to make it look like it blends into the golf course haha. Hardest part is waiting for cooler weather. How did the thatch get that bad in the first place? Shouldn't microbes be eating all of that up? Was there something preventing this process from happening? Amazing before/after pics! You really did a great job. I can't wait to see how it looks in a couple more months in Fall.
This lawn is probably 35 years old. Lack of late fall short mow was a lot of the issue. Tons of snow mold from last winter. Coupled with the grasses natural tendency to die out is the issue. Our elevation is just below mile high and the microbes do not help the same as they do at sea level

How often would you detach and use the scarifier per year? Illinois I live and have mainly 85 percent different types of fescue and rest Kentucky blue grass.
Question??? Once you cleaned up the thatch. After scarifying. You applied fertilizer the next day. Then followed up with reseeding. Apparently, the fertilizer did not affect the reseeding process. I always thought the fertilizer would affect the seeds. Special type fertilizer? About to experiment with my yard this year. 2024. And how early can I do the dethatching, scarifying, reseeding, and fertilization. Live in San Antonio, Texas. Yes and no. The scarifier is great for dethatching. Aeration does that too. Where it won’t help is if you have compacted soil. Which I don’t find super common if you’re watering properly. All in all I think this is a great alternative to lawn aeration

I have a similar issue, is there certain times of year to do this? I'm located in high desert in western CO, so it gets pretty hot in the summer and very low humidity.
I had to pause within the first minute and ran to my wife in excitement when I saw that Ryobi now had a dethatcher tool. Already owning a Sun Joe in your opinion since you used it is it better? Would be great to not have to deal with a cable cord when doing this and I already have a bunch of Ryobi tooling already and batteries
It feels fantastic. I did a video on it the video before this one. It’s dethacher was better, the scarifier wasn’t as good since it doesn’t go as deep but it still performed!
I'm actually starting in a couple of weeks (I live in Chicago) because it seems like the temps are going to be on the milder side for August so I want to take advantage and give the new grass the maximum amount of time to establish before winter. Last year I waited until mid September and the temps dropped dramatically and my new grass didn't have enough time to grow good roots to survive the winter. Plus this year I have good irrigation so even if we get a hot temps I should be able to ride it out. My process for overseeing an established lawn is 1) Mow short 2) Dethatch (maybe scarify) 3) Top-dress a few of the bare, low spots 4) Put down Scotts starter fertilizer with weed control (has the same stuff a tenacity in it) 5) seed 6) Rake seed in lightly 7) Roll 8) Light coat of Peat Moss.
Here’s my 2c. The grass doesn’t care as long as it’s growing. I dethatch monthly on average. The sooner you get the debris out the sooner it repairs. When it comes to scarifying I do three times per season. Spring, as the heat hits and late summer / fall
Question my Brother Ginja. I bought one of the SunJoe's from another video. I have Zoysia that's thick and 99% weed free, but the lawn won't take iron and green up for the past couple years. My 0-0-7 has iron (at times). My 16-4-8 has iron. My Milorganite (when I use it...that's a lot of N for Zoysia) has iron. Heck, even my ironite has iron. Really? Who knew? My soil test said the Fe should be between 2-4, and with the love above, my Fe is only 1.3. I've not dethatched with the SunJoe in ~18 months, and have not aerated, but I DEEP tilled and seeded 4 years ago. After calling the Bishop and fasting, what is next? Core aeration, or beating the crud out of my lawn by dethatching and scarifying heavily? Then come back and apply ironite? I'm not sure which would be the best bet to get the iron down to the roots. Is the thatch blocking it, or perhaps compact soil? There is a slight (very slight) angle for runoff to the edge of the road, and the area here is greener, so I'm wondering if the iron is just not reaching the soil (and maybe the nitrogen), and it's running down before soaking in. I know I'm going to have to "embrace the suck", but I'm not sure which direction to go...or all 3? I'm assuming after all that beating it would be wise to throw down some pre-emergent too? Heck, you'd almost think I'd been paying attention to all that stuff in your videos, right?
Love the fasting idea 💡 😄 😆 🤣 First and foremost the soil tests give us an idea of what the soil has in it. Try not to get to worried about "fixing" the soil. The tests help us understand what is best to use to feed the lawn. Which sounds like you're doing great. I would plan on a monthly iron treatment. I have to do mine as well. Small doses every two weeks would be best 👌
My dethatcher just arrived about five minutes ago via Amazon so I'm boning up here on correct methods. But I want to lay down weed and feed after because I'm going to have a lot of dandelions soon at this time of year. If that ok versus just putting down fertilizer?
My issue: Thatch problem. Way too thick and spongy. I'm planning to dethatch the crap out of it in the next couple of weeks. I have a mix of rye, kbg, and fescue. Question: Knowing that it's so thick and thatchy, should I dethatch and scarify and call it a day, or do you recommend overseeding, like you did? Or, let the lawn fill in on it's own? By overseeding, am I promoting a thatch issue down the road?
this is a fantastic question. so...... few things. we need to understand if its thatch or if its just the grass deciding to run on top with minimal root activity. if this is the case the grass will tear out when you dethatch it. there's not much you can do other than tear it, thin it out, aerate or scarify it and over seed it to establish new grass and a new rooting system. if the above is not the case and its really spongy thatch the quickest thing you can do is this, dethatch it a ton. meaning 5 plus passes. scarify it 3 times over, aerate it, remove the plugs and top dress the entire lawn with sand. do a classic aerification. this will put sand into the thatch layer and speed this process up 10 fold. hope that helps.
@pestandlawnginja yep and before you clean up your own mess and that motorcyclist drives through it? That's like me saying yeah I swept some nails in the road, but I'm gonna clean it up..
Hey 👋 Aeration disrupts the soil profile. This device actually hits and Thomas out the thatch layer and doesn’t go lower than 1/4” into the soil. I actually prefer the latter
Hey Ginja! I've got 11,000 square feet of lawn (sandy soil, cool season grass). Because of that, I am planning to do the power rake and then the scarify separately. Plan is to power rake within the next week and then 2 to 3 weeks later bust out the scarifier to remove the excess thatch. Do you think I'll be okay with this 2-step process? If so, should I feed the lawn a recovery fert after the power rake or wait and feed it after scarifying? Or both? Thanks Man!
Here’s my 2c. Cleaning up the debris with the dethacher first is great. It helps to thin out the topical debris so when you use the scarifier it has less resistence and in my opinion helps prevent some ripping or live matter. With that said when it comes to super gummy debris and thatch as shown in this video it would have been fine to start with the scarifier and would have saved me a ton of time.
I have just enough time to watch this video before Thursday Thirsty Stream starts at 9pm. Will you be there? Matt Martin is extremely educational and helpful. Hope to see you there.
When I paid attention to my lawn for the first time in May (we moved in last Nov and had lots of house issues) I had already missed pre-emergent and by June I had more weeds than grass ... and noticed *lots* of thatch and bad spots. Decided to wait on thatch and build the lawn with little more than frequent mowing at the middle setting on my mower. I did hit it with some weed 'n feed once. I started bagging and then did most of the summer mulching. Today I saw 5 dandelions for the first time since June. Fargin' bastages! ruclips.net/video/bYiow8qNL8Y/видео.html.. If heat/rain caused more growth than I could mow late summer, I bagged and dumped clippings over a fence to mitigate weeds at the fence line. The results have been good except for all the crabgrass and creeping charlie I never treated. Now it's Sept and back to bagging to keep the surface cleaner and start cutting lower. I might not be able to thatch until early Oct but that'll still be OK I think. And then immediately on to the fall treatments. That's my plan, hope it works.

this is a fantastic question. so...... few things. we need to understand if its thatch or if its just the grass deciding to run on top with minimal root activity. if this is the case the grass will tear out when you dethatch it. there's not much you can do other than tear it, thin it out, aerate or scarify it and over seed it to establish new grass and a new rooting system.
if the above is not the case and its really spongy thatch the quickest thing you can do is this, dethatch it a ton. meaning 5 plus passes. scarify it 3 times over, aerate it, remove the plugs and top dress the entire lawn with sand. do a classic aerification. this will put sand into the thatch layer and speed this process up 10 fold.
hope that helps.
Why didn’t u put tenacity down when seeding?
The window for crabgrass germination already passed so I wasn’t worried. Filmed may 31st
Nice video for a blue grass lawn. What is your advice for a fescue grass lawn?
This works great. If the lawn is getting sparse you'll need to over seed
I’m dethaatching and scarifying my lawn today. However trying to stay organic and natural for fertilizer. Any guidance?
Aged cow manure is great 👍 runs hot so be sure it's aged well and in a compost form.
Milorganite is also an alternative. It's human 💩
What's the best time of year to do this? (I'm in Cache Valley)

Looks like lindon or Orem, Utah.
Drop seeder to fertilize???
It’s Scott’s drop spreader
@PestandLawnGinja right i know. That explains the lines.
@@fabrones49 lines are fungus and the ride on lawn mower his company used to mow the lawn, has nothing to do with the spreader. new video to come.
Did you dethatch in the summer?

holaaaaay recovery and GRASS!
👊🏻🥳
Fast considering how much I beat it up!
Kentucky Blue FTW!
💯
Them motorcyclist love you blowing grass clippings in the road
some of us clean up our messes
@pestandlawnginja yep and before you clean up your own mess and that motorcyclist drives through it? That's like me saying yeah I swept some nails in the road, but I'm gonna clean it up..
Amazing as always. Did you just spread seed. Or seed and moss?
Only topical spread
Should have used tenacity with overseeding.
the majority of seed germination already occured. wasn't necessary
OOPS --- I'm sorry -- my comment was supposed to go to a different video. --- But yours is good too !~
No problem. Have a great day
555th Like! I'm a number nerd - sorry! Doesn't aeration do the same thing but it's a 2 in 1 solution over just dethatching?
Hey 👋
Aeration disrupts the soil profile. This device actually hits and Thomas out the thatch layer and doesn’t go lower than 1/4” into the soil. I actually prefer the latter
Question: how often do you dethatch & scarify?
I personal scarify March and August and dethatch monthly throughout the growing season
Or both? Thanks Man!
Fuck the grass. That background scenery! 🔥🔥🔥
It's pretty awesome
Why not just use the scarifying attachment in the first place?
Here’s my 2c. Cleaning up the debris with the dethacher first is great. It helps to thin out the topical debris so when you use the scarifier it has less resistence and in my opinion helps prevent some ripping or live matter.
With that said when it comes to super gummy debris and thatch as shown in this video it would have been fine to start with the scarifier and would have saved me a ton of time.
I have just enough time to watch this video before Thursday Thirsty Stream starts at 9pm. Will you be there? Matt Martin is extremely educational and helpful. Hope to see you there.
Sounds fun! I may drop in for a sec

Numbers?
I see that EGO… makes me a proud owner to know the pros use one too
It’s been a good product!
What happened to the beard???
Mowed it!
@@pestandlawnginja 😂😂😂 touché. I would have also accepted “scalped”
Never ever Scarify your lawn !!!
I do 3x per season. Works fantastic
@@pestandlawnginja brown grass is free compost in your grass that is why I do not do it
@@wiktorpoliszczuk1372 grass that isn't decomposing is not compost its a weed barrier. which is why you should scarify the lawn. to remove this non composting layer. then with proper mulching you can take advantage of the nutrients mulching has to offer

Have a question...just bought my first house...there are patches of bad tall fescue. I think it's called Kentucky 31....I've seeded 4 times this year and I have been seeding with tall fescue and seeding so many times and watering i got a mold....gonna do the dethqtching process like you just did....will this take care of of the bad Kentucky 31....or will that ken31 come back...I've been trying to grow the Ken 31 out by seeding....and it's working. But can I use this process to grow this bad grass out....help.

Shine this turd! 😂
💯
Why didn't you aerate before seeding?
Because I used the scarifier. Much more effective
