What shes saying really applies to ALL black people outside of America in different diasporas. Everyone copies Black American culture, but then project and say "Black Americans have no culture" WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY COPYING BLACK AMERICAN CULTURE, and i feel like, its because of what she said, they need their own unique culture, instead of copying one, they really know nothing about.

Black American culture is simply very inspiring. And I think a lot of the time other diasporans start off copying and eventually it morphs into doing their own thing with a clear inspiration from Black American culture. Grime music in the UK and Afrobeats is a clear example. In Ghana we tried the rap thing for a while and it morphed into Hip Life and subsequently afrobeats. Same in UK a few tried the rap thing (in American accents) got ripped for that and it disappeared while garage and grime begun to build. Now UK rap though inspired by America is 100% in a UK accent. So you are right however I think it turns into inspiration later on. And any one who says Black Americans have no culture is simply ignorant and uneducated and we don’t listen to those folks. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙏🏾

@@TheNameisPY This is a deep conversation. I think colonialism/neo-colonialism and the subsequent impact of racism and systemic injustice have influenced all black people of the diaspora, regardless of where they live. Black American culture is a sort of uniting thread that creates kinship amongst black people who tangle with the master-slave dialectic within the global phenomenon of systemic racial oppression. Black Americans have a lot more experience and visibility on the world stage...living in the richest and most influential land in the world, where media, entertainment, and the overall credo of "manifest destiny" and "all men are created equal" positively played into their hand through constant struggle compared to other black people in nations with other politics, philosophies, and situations who were not so brave or blessed with the momentum of rebellion and social, economic, and even religious progress.
Etching out a dynamic and unique black culture within a dominant society that has roots of oppression that deny opportunities and support to minority groups is challenging. Black Germans are a paradox to me, as they come from many different African nations or are mixed with black Americans and Germans, but many will not say I am black but will refer to their homeland (Kenyan for example) or say they are Afro-Deutsch, which has no real historical meaning if understood in the context of tribes and peoples. Many blacks willingly immigrated to Germany and thus have a different experience, ideology, and connection to Germany vs. Black people of the diaspora in the West who were forced. Germany's black population has always been relatively small, and it has yet to develop anything remotely suggestive of a unique "black German" culture outside of mimicking black American sounds, styles, and even lingo. (which ironically upholds and perpetuates some negative stereotypes about black people that ultimately create and sustainsystemic inequities). Black American culture is inspiring in some cases but disheartening in others.
The biggest problem I see in Germany is unity among black Germans. The cultural climate of Germany is very different from that of America or even the UK. Fitting in, or being considered "Deutsch" can impact you on every level, while there are many different ways to express yourself as a black American, there are not enough opportunities for exploration, expression, development, creativity, economic development, and solidarity among black Germans in Germany. They are expected to be as German as possible, adopting the language and culture, yet still facing instances of discrimination and bad treatment which causes many to distance themselves even more from the idea and desire of uniting and forming a strong black subculture. Until I see a black middle-class town in Germany or better yet, a popular black male Schlager singer, It would be hard to understand what people mean by "black German culture."
Germany's black population is relatively new and they come from diverse backgrounds, so it will take time and effort to form a purpose and collective that unites people for the sake of representation, equity, inclusion, and celebration. Black Germans need to start there own poetry, art, literature, and music movement, solely based on their unique experiences and expressions of being black and German. It has to be real, it has to be raw, and it has to challenge the status quo. There is no other way you can unite black people without first being willing to speak the truth and be your unique self as a black German, despite what everyone else thinks who would rather not hear your opinion at all.

@@r.a.godson7709 Very well said. I have observed many of the issues you mention within the Black German community and I love your point about being caught between being Black/African and struggling to be accepted as German. My hope with this podcast is to start the conversation. I don't think it's even being had. I see there is a level of need for some unity but I also see there is confusion about how to unify these many nuances. The focus should be to find what unifies and as you said this is usually through arts, music, poetry and being unapologetic Black German with it (emphasis on BLACK). I don't know how many Black people in Germany are ready for that. Great insight. Thank you.

Very good video. We need more content on YT about the black experience of blacks in European countries who are born and raised in these countries. Because let’s be honest, most of us get too much influenced by Americans and American media because that’s all we’re consuming so sometimes we are quick to think the American black experience is equal to ours, when in fact European countries are very different than the US in terms of culture and also Jia the fact that in the US, anybody that’s isn’t a Native American, is ultimately an immigrant(including white Americans) In European countries it’s the whites who are the natives and everyone else is immigrant. Big difference in culture and things.

Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts. I agree. We need more conversations about the Black Experience in Europe. Will even say the same for Africa.

Great podcast. It's hard to try and build an identity in a space where you have no reference. You are not alone, and Iblove the point made about realizing that the German black experience is just different and there is so much nuance in the country and fusions of sub cultures that shape that. Love that.

So much nuance but I also like the fact she said to find something that unites all the Black people and share that in common. We can love each others differences and create a unifying culture that brings us together. I think that is very necessary.

Super interesting from the French perspective. For us African culture is definitely the center of our identity. Religion being Islam is also one factor. Music was also a great was to unité, sports as well.
