My wife and I visit London on a yearly base. We never felt unsafe in London. But when it comes to NHS I am glad that I am living in Germany.

Really!? I wish I had that bliss but I have seen too much to ever feel completely safe anywhere in London. I am not scared to be outside at whatever time but I am fully aware i need to be aware of my surrounding and on guard. I don't feel that in Hamburg at all. As for the NHS... Now I have experienced German healthcare, I see all the problems in hindsight.

    Hi, fellow Hamburger here.
That you got the electric and gas utilities included in your rent is exceptional. Not unheard of, mind you, but still rare.
That a rented house is sold and you are forced out is pretty much impossible. The only reason you might get forced out is the so-called "Eigenbedarf". That's when the owner of a (usually) one or two family home requires the part you rented for their own family. Even so they can't just kick you out from one month to the next. Depending on the length of time you've rented the same apartment or home you will get between three to six months. The length is determined by laws. Mind you, even Eigenbedarf/owner's requirements isn't easy to get through vs renters. There are quite a lot of renters' protection laws in place.

Just join a "Verein" like a local football Verein. It's probably the Best method 2 get 2 know pepz closer in Germany. Specially in Hamburg. We are known 2 be kinda bit reseved. So i would recommend 2 join a verein/Club. Like Sports Club or whatever u like. It's the Best way to get 2 know pepz & bond with them here. Specially when u'r new 2 the City.
      Ps:
Most Germans in General ain't like the talking around Things or sugarcoating Things etc.
Just come as u are. Just be authentic and pepz will appreciate it.

However I moved to London and in 2 weeks I witnessed 2 very serious crimes and that has not happened in Germany so far. Closest thing to being that scary is Frankfurt main station. Lol

      Hi you two.
May I ask a question, please?
I’m German. I live in the south now, but I lived in Hamburg among other places. I have never lived in Berlin though. I’ve have heard though, that Berlin can be quite dangerous. There are gangs and something like a Mafia even!? Can it really be scary/ dangerous to live there?
I‘m asking because I have never really felt in danger in Germany. Not even at night alone on the Reeperbahn. Even though I‘m a woman. And I am wondering if I am just naive or lucky or I have just been in the right place.
      Thank you

Yes , I agree P.Y. The social interaction between Germans and other Residents in personal and private Spaces is indeed a lot Better and much relaxed in Germany than in England. Because if the Locals in Germany like you , then they like you . But you have to earn their trust, because after all they trust you to come into their personal space, right? So visiting or meeting each other or cooking at each others home is very much common here in Germany. My Son studied in England and has lived in London for the last four years. I witnessed that the English and the Expatriates work together, go to the Pub or Events together. But the only time they would let anyone into their personal Space would be obviously to get intimate. So in my opinion their overt Politness as a kind of Virtue can not be understood as a welcoming gesture, it just maintains peace by protecting personal space, which is obviously important to them.. thus avoiding possible uncomfortable Conflict moments which have to be dealt with

We must be careful here. Just because "race" is primarily a social construct, it doesn't mean that its effects aren't real - it can shape people's entire lives.
So while saying "I don't see race!" or "I don't see color!" might be well-meaning, it sort of implies: "I am going to ignore the entire life experience of people from a different background than my own!"

    •  10 дней назад +3

@@CavHDeu That's not really how this works. We all have preconceptions lurking around in our subconsciousness - from our culture, our upbringing, from our peers, from the media we consume, and other daily interactions.
And making snap assumptions about both things and people is a basic human trait - we simply do not have the processing power to start over with each person from scratch, and we can't ever know every single person's life experiences. The trick is to be _aware_ that we are making snap assumptions about other people - and using that knowledge, we should question our thought processes on whether we are really seeing the full picture, and be willing to second-guess ourselves.
If we assume that we go into each new situation logically and rationally, then we will have failed before we even start.

The info about rents in London and Hamburg is galling really, talking as someone from the UK. But Hamburg isn't the best comparison. Are the rents in Munich or Berlin more comparable to London? As for race relations.......... I'm surprised to hear you say this because under other German channels, there's a lot of criticism over Muslims in Germany. Both those who have been there for several generations and more recent arrivals. Africans aren't that popular either. It's probably because you're from the UK or have been living there a while that you're more accepted and acceptable.

RE: Race relations. I am speaking specifically to race relations not racism. I said “if Germans like you”. And I find they are more open to friendships and real culture mixing when they do. British people are more conservative on culture mixing even if they like you. I say this on a personal level.
I do have some privilege of being from the UK. That is true. It’s likely not the same for everyone. To my experience, I just prefer Germany when it comes to building interracial friendships.

You'll certainly find racism anywhere. I do think, it's less in Germany, but it's more behind your back, less openly communicated.
Overall, I also think that there's more "classism" than racism prevalent in society. In Britain, people in general seem to be more class-aware, whereas in Germany many people eventually even deny the existence of classes, but discriminate against you at the same time - again more covert, less openly.

Certainly everywhere. So is classism. British people will still be civil with you and that make it tricky to even know. For me, that’s worse.

German racism is more behind your back? Then how do you know about it?

@@Fragenzeichenplatte I'm white, born German, and I do hear things from other people, whenever they think that racism would be "common sense".

@@TheNameisPY Germans indeed are more blunt in communication. But at the same, racism and classism is kept under the rug.

@@IsaakHunt If you're white then you obviously wouldn't experience direct racism against non-white people. You only see your own experience which may not be the same as what black people see.
