    Honestly i was like mike when i came to america, i was so in love with how nice everyone was and loved all the small talk. It took about 3 months, until i had some more serious issues to talk about, when i noticed HOW surface level everything is.😂
    For example, in germany it was normal to talk about the war in ukraine as a small talk topic, you would say things like that you are worried and then each go your merry way... NOT possible in the US, serious topics are not talked about in this way. I had to pretend that there was something else on my mind.😅 Love the german directness.

    • @nicoles9077
      @nicoles9077 5 месяцев назад +1

      If you lived in the US then you know a lot of people are unhinged, couple that with 400 million guns and of course people will keep things superficial. It’s very easy to tick people off and they go back to their car and get their gun and it’s a bad outcome. So yes, superficial is the easiest route unless you’ve known someone for a long time and you have deeper conversations

    I can relate to what Mike said so much ^^ We went for a vacation in the US a couple weeks ago and both me and the kids are extremely reserves and introverted back home. We talked to more people (as in strangers) on our way from the airport to the hotel than in an entire year at home and it felt so refreshing and nice with all the friendly people everywhere. Honestly we didn't want to go home. I don't blame you for wanting to explore when you first made it there after years of trying to get there :)

    Hello Hayley and Mike, what a funny video. I am from Germany and my wife is American. The first 10 years in the US was great, exploring the whole country, seeing every state. However, after some time it wears you out and especially that you cannot walk anywhere, that all is closed at 10PM, but the worst is that the kids and teenagers do not have a life to grow up. They are trapped in the house and need mom and pap to drive them around. It is actually a very sad country after a while.

    • @nicoles9077
      @nicoles9077 5 месяцев назад

      Dude where did you live that your kids were trapped in the house? Were you living off the grid? You had no parks nearby? You’re kids weren’t invited to their friends house for play or sleepover? They weren’t involved in sports?

      @@benzo___ I’m not defensive. You are the one that made your life sound sad that your kids are trapped in the house and don’t have a life. Those were your exact words. I don’t know you, but there are always things to do you just have to go sign up and do it. If your kids want to do an activity where they are busy all day Saturday it’s called band. Every American knows how serious those band guys and gals are lol

    Thank you Mike for doing this. We finally get to see your personality! I agree about the windows although I have not lived in Germany. I've seen enough videos to know I would NOT like the way the windows are in Germany. Mike is right they take up space in the actual room. And I also love screens to keep out bugs & mosquitos. Come to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and you will find good sausages here at Usinger's and other places as well!

  • @LythaWausW
    @LythaWausW 5 месяцев назад +2

    The mosquito part - perfectly done. We are swatting and waving at them as we try to sleep every night this week. And it's not even warm enough to go to the pool (our dorf has an outdoor pool!). I've put a standing fan in our bedroom in an attempt to keep the mosquitos from torturing us.

  • @thelma2084
    @thelma2084 4 месяца назад

    That was a very good rundown of the window/ ac pros and cons. German windows are cool for opening so many ways but space! oh that's true. Also yes the mosquitos and noise are the tradeoff without AC, wow

    I love how he found the one benefit of American sliding windows, that they don't take up space in the room. I've bruised myself quite a few times because I've misjudged where that huge window is/has moved to in the breeze. However German windows are unrivalled for ease of cleaning. I clean my windows often just cuz it's so convenient, like a crazy old German lady.

    Mike, Thanks for sharing part of your journey. It's so interesting to hear that paperwork is somewhat less than in DE, especially concerning your drivers license. Here in France It's much more difficult for an American to obtain a French drivers license.
    The "Hi, how are you" is a difficult one for me too. Especially when you go into a store. What's up with that?! Every time we go on vacation to the US I have to get used to it all over again. I also have to get used to traffic lights hanging over the intersection and not situated on the right hand side of the street. That's difficult and I have to pay extra attention the first days of driving.
    Why don't you go check out Denver, Colorado for a place to move. We visited this spring and I really liked the area. There a many nice neighborhoods with houses with these american style porches. Very quaint! Lots of city parks too. And then there are the Rockies.
    Und Streichwurst?! Ah nee, die kannst du behalten. Aber deutsches Brot? Oh ja! Das verstehe ich vollkommen. Das "Brot" in Amerika ist wirklich.....:)
    Viele liebe Grüsse aus Paris

    How cool that Mike engages with the friendly Americans and doesn't condescend them. Has Mike mastered returning items to the store? This is something that freaked my husband out, when I would return something simply cuz it didn't taste good. No receipt, no problem. The other day my meat from Aldi was rancid before the due date, and I did not return it for a refund because the process is so unpleasant.

    How do you experience the political climate and geschpräche about the current situation on the street or can you say that in europe the discussion is bigger than the local situation?

    Hey Hayley, thanks for the interesting video. I just wanted to share my experience about the US after living in Germany for 8 years.
    Wasserhahn in der Badewanne I also did not like that it is installed to the wall.
    Another thing, when people asked me hi, how are you I also answered like Mike, I am good and how about you and I also didn’t get any answer 😂😂😂.

    Sounds nice. Can you tell me why you prefer living in the US over Germany because in this Video you said that if your parents would come to Germany you guys would stay.

    After being asked several times where I came from, I asked back: “What do you think?” The answers were sometimes really interesting. It went from China to Russia to Europe. Germany usually didn't come at the very beginning. :D

    I think Mike would really enjoy Pennsylvania which has a heavy German culture. Especially check out the Pennsylvania Duesch , (Dutch). There are even mountains there. Just don't go to Philadelphia. It's a very rough city. Pittsburgh would be nicer. But there is a German vibe in-between the cities.

    Sehr unterhaltsam!
    Hab 3 Jahre in den USA gelebt.
    Mein Bruder besuchte mich, ohne daß ich ihn über Smalltalk aufgeklärt hab.
    Er ging in die Videothek ( ja, ewig her😅) und kam lange Zeit nicht zurück.
    Dann kam er.
    Ich : wo warst du denn so lange?
    Er: da fragte mich jemand wie es mir geht. Da hab ich ihm meine Lebensgeschichte erzählt 😂.
    An diese shallow Floskeln muss man sich erst gewöhnen.

    That was fun! I could relate as I moved to the US in 1981 to live with my American husband. Mike's reactions mirrored mine in some respects. The green card was easy though, maybe because we still lived in Germany then, it was just a visit with the consul and that was it (maybe I forgot, who knows). And then I did not become an American citizen because I did not want to lose my German citizenship. That German rule was just changed recently and I finally became an American citizen. Mike thinks that everyone is really friendly, and while true, it is different in Germany where people generally mean what they say, and are honest. In the United States, it is not polite to be honest, so as a German person I never know what people really are thinking. That's difficult for me. I know it, but I don't like it. (Grammarly just suggested changing the previous sentence! to "I know it, but I wouldn't say I like it" Aarghhhh! They call it diplomatic, and I call it hypocritical. Case in point!) Yeah, so 45 years of living in the US have not turned me into a "diplomatic" American. Thank you for this video, made my heart content!
