The fact that this element of the myth was so subconsciously present that Richard Donner could just present it and the audience would feel that it had forever been present in their minds speaks volumes about the durability of soul truths and the quality of what Siegal and Shuster formulated. Incidentally the Genesis of the Superman concept began with Existential philosophy and that thread is miraculously preserved from their first inception through to this glorious cinematic moment. I worship and adore this scene 💕

This scene used to choke me up even as a kid because the mom was so similar to my mom. Now that my mother has passed it's even worse as I can barely watch it.. But the memories it brings back are overall still so pleasant. This movie, like Star wars, was all about hope, faith, love, sacrifice.. All that is noblest in the human spirit and that's why this is one of the greatest movies ever made!!

It's stupid... but its tough for me to watch this scene... See, this movie was one of a few movies that me and my Dad always loved watching together, and then about 6 years ago he and my Mum seperated... so whenever I watch this scene it just reminds me that he's not in the house anymore... Like I said its stupid, its not like he's dead and I still see him at least 4 times a week... it just always makes me cry... Such a powerful scene

This scene occurrs around the hour mark of the movie so we've had time to build up to this point. For some reason modern cinema has dispensed with the build up and went straight to the pay off, and the movies suffer as a result. I can't recall being moved by a movie in the last 10 years tbh. This scene crystallises the need for build up, and as a result of the time, fine writing and acting, we get one of the best scenes in the whole movie.

Donner substituted what would technically be called a "prologue" for the first act of the three act structure. Three act form is a classic structure but by streamlining it to bare bones and avoiding imagination the film industry's has painted itself into a corner.
Just before this scene...him waking up to the radio (off the air) at dawn reminds me of a single weekend I spent with my grandparents on their farmhouse.. where the local radio station still cutoff at night and all you got was static after.... the box of cheerios at the breakfast table sealed the deal. :
David Butler - yes.. Most younger people today can't recall a time when radio and TV stations used to ACTUALLY go of the air. Regular channels like 2,4,5,7,11.. Would ask end about 2am, play the national anthem, then go to the constant long beep with the 🌈 colors on the screen.. And radio would just have static as you said.. That's when you knew it was definitely time to get to sleep lol. Ever since cnn introduced the 24 hour news channel sometime in the mid 80's.. That's when all TV stations soon followed afterwards until now.
This whole movie is a perfect character development of Clark Kent to Superman. Just perfect, including Superman II that was directed at the same time as the first, giving more info of his background and how he cope with himself being a powerful kryptonian and a normal "human being".
They started Superman II at the same time at this film and shot many scenes from II intertwined with this film's scenes. However, given fears of not meeting the first film's release date, they eventually had director Richard Donner stop all work on II and just finish this one. Since the producers didn't get along with Donner, they then fired him and brought in Richard Lester as a replacement. Lester went back to an earlier script for II and scrapped or refilmed much of what Donner did. Supposedly only about 15 percent of the Superman II theatrical cut could be credited to Donner. Over a decade ago, they released a Donner cut of II on video, going back to Donner's preferred script (although not all scenes could be salvaged because Donner hadn't filmed them).

This scene often made me think this farewell ment he was going to the other end of the world and they'd see each other again. But in fact since he sends her half his salary 12 years later I can assume she's still living on the farm and not in a retirement village or care home.
Jonathan and Martha are what keep Superman grounded. I’ve always enjoyed the dynamic they share and the importance of their influence in the Superman mythos.

They knew how to make films in the 70's, even Brando's dialled in performance simply outshines anything today, the gravitas of his voice, command.
That crane down on over the fields to Ma and Clark - then it holds with them on the left. They just let the scene play right there only to close in when Ma breaks down. I guarantee John Williams had this piece long before the movie and when this scene came he was like "Oh I'll just put this here."
We all have this moment coming. We can remember our mom's love and light was unconditional to us. And it doesn't matter if She is our biological mom or not. The Father has some serious priorities when it comes to procration. I love you always, unconditionally no matter your faults because your dreams will always Trump your fears, go for it. 💖
Superman should have been a trilogy. The first movie just jammed a bit too much of everything in. The first movie should be about Krypton (I want to see more of how Krypton socially and politically works) and Smallville. The second one with him vs Lex Luthor and the third vs Team Zod.

Maybe it is just me, but being a woman or man at that age would be unbearable without having other people in the house. Having some person come around every once in awhile to check up on things is not enough. Sell the home to be closer to Clark and to be around more people in your age range mama. I know small town folk like small towns, but they like them with company. Human isolation is bad for human psychology.
Today's generation unwillingly anaesthetised by CGI and erratic editing cuts, this scene opitomizes everything that is lost in a majority of contemprary films, pure wholesome goodness. From the superb panoramic cinematography, martha's silhouette against the guaze of the farm gate, the loyal dog running towards clark standing against the horizon, what gets me every time in this scene is how martha nervously not knowing what to do with her hands attempts to hug her son but restrains herself, that brings a tear to my eye... everytime! awesome acting in such a poignant tender scene capped off by John Williams', it doesn't get much better. Allied to the "death of jonathan kent scene" this has got to be up there with one of the best movies of all time.
I often wondered how did Martha go from a middle aged to elderly woman in a short space of time. I'm assuming that Clarke left soon after Jonathan died.
If Superman:The Movie had been re-released in Imax for its 40th anniversary,it should've been the special extended version with more than 40 minutes of footage not shown in theaters when it was released in 1978 and then re-released in 1980.
Too bad that this movie didn't have Martha Kent visiting Metropolis long after Clark left Smallville. She would've liked to see that big city and see the Daily Planet building there and also meeting Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen & Perry White.
Since Ma was in the process of fixing a meal before this started, I always wondered if (off camera) Clark went ahead and had one last meal with his Earthly mother before going off to meet his real father. He wouldn't want it to go to waste now, would he?
My question is this. If he hasn't learned how to do his eyebeams yet, how can he be so clean-shaven and well-groomed? Does Kryptonian puberty mean growing facial and bodily hair at an older age than humans do? Were his younger hair follicles weak enough to be cut by normal metal? Have they always been, but he uses his eye beams as an adult for a closer shave? Did the Kents make a straight razor from a piece of his ship? Do they rub a normal razor with a piece of Kryptonite before he shaves and trims his hair? What?
Great scene not sure why they decided to use Christopher R voice for the young Clark bit of disrespect to the chap who played him not using his voice also they dissed him that much they made him wear a load of prosthetics on his nose poor casting just cast someone who looks like Clark not that hard is it. Great scene nevertheless.
Compare the beauty and colour of this scene with the dark cgi ear rape we get these days. At least Singer tried to retain some of the magic of Superman with his movie . Snyder's destroyed the franchise in my opinion.
