Jor-el said that the earth lacked the light so he sent them his only son. Jor-El means God will uplift, Kal-El means God will give light. So God uplifted his son and gave the earth his only son who was the light. Sounds great. I wonder where they got that from? John 3:16 For God loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal light. John 8:12 I am the light of the world, he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. Sounds too easy...
Supes' Jewish roots are well documented, so it's always a treat to see someone go "oh snap!" when they realize that on their own :D Edit: whoops, shouldn't have skimmed your post. Hoo boy....
Actually, Jor El means God. Well, El does. Jor is nothing. Kal El means light God. Light meaning opposite of heavy, not illumination. While I can see the clever wordplay and the apparent symbolism it very slyly implies, it technically doesnt mean anything. Sorry.
One of the greatest scenes in a great movie. Always wondered though why Jor-El told Clark he mustn't interfere in human history when his very presence on Earth as Superman would do that
To interfere in their history is to control them, to choose to be their God; he interferes in their history later because though they are important; so is he
@@commonsenseking6386 Superman IV is a bad movie because of bad writing and horrible special effects, not because he decided to interfere. That was the one interesting idea the movie had.

By today’s standards; movies can easily make a man fly with the FX we have. Back then, they used every trick they could think of and it still holds up. That’s dedication to the art
It kind of reminds me of reading the book of Proverbs. I get the feeling this is how God would speak if he was talking to one of his kids. I've always felt that when he does speak to me that's what such warmth and kindness even when I felt and all to be in his presence.
Superman represents the goodness and strength in each one of us. He is an archetypal figure. There is a lot of symbolism in the story. Our origins are ancient and otherwordly. We've fallen and landed here. We are out of place in the natural world and in the animal kingdom. We have powers and abilities above them, and don't know where they came from or how it came to be. There were other attempts in our lost past, other civilizations that have destroyed themeselves through misuse and abuse of power. That is what Krypton represents. It also represents a much higher and divine origin. Jor-El is like the God figure, and his wisdom in crystal respository of knowledge are archetypal representations of ancient knowlege passed on to us in books and texts. "Who am I?" That is us asking the question, "Who are we?" or "What are we?"
SO...this scene shows that Superman is the end-user of all the information and wisdom accumulated by Kal-El from the earlier 4 years in space and 12 years mechanically and possibly telepathically and as Clark Kent throughout his life as such. This movie was very deep on many levels but at the same time, at times didn't downplay itself but attempted to inject authenticity without the so-called "realism" bragged and obnoxiously displayed nowadays.
Everyone misses this one! “By now, you will have reached your 18th year, as it is measured on Earth. By that reckoning, I will have been dead for many thousands of your years.” Krypton was several galaxies away from Earth, and the Phantom drive didn’t exist. That ship traveled at near-light speed. He only aged 3 years inside, but millennia passed outside. Or… why he tells Lois he’s “over 21.” Imagine telling someone that might not make 80 your several thousand years old!
Exact method of travel is quite irrelevant for story and even if Kal-El's pod traveled in real-space time dilation would have kept him alive. Maybe for him that voyage was very short.
@kshitij924 I seen superman returns. I didn't do it for me that much. It's like superman returns gay! Poorly written and directed and a lousy cast. Christopher Reeve was my hero. Shame Chris. RIP:( .Remember in superman returns when he was just floating around in earth orbit? Why wth?

It follows the comics. Originally, he was the last. Supergirl, et al (including the miniaturized city of Kandor) came later; and, to be blunt, cheapens the whole Superman mythos. The Phantom Zoners are an interesting story, but only as "those who must not be trusted/allowed to remain in the Universe." Superman's story is, by necessity, a noble tragedy.
Richard Donner and Tom Mankiewicz knew what to do with this movie to keep it true to the character of Superman and to respect the material on such a high level. Mankiewicz especially made sure to let the audience know at the start of the movie that "This is no fantasy, no careless product of wild imagination". Mankiewicz doesn't get as nearly enough credit for making this movie the legend that it is.
Superman and Superman II were met to be one movie with the first being part 1 and Superman II being part 2 originally when Superman at the end of part 1 sends the XK 101 missile into space it explodes and effects of the explosion shatters the Phantom Zone nearby containing Zod ,Non , and Ursa and freeing them from their prison while he is saving people from the earthquake meanwhile the 3 villians are on the moon wrecking the lunar module and killing the astronauts .

Yeah I have the same feeling. This is like The Lion King when Mufasa's ghost speaks to Mufasa saying what he must do
1977
With all of the CGI and special effects we have today, they cannot write a more beautiful and mesmerizing scene than this. This is pure movie magic. A total sense of wonder and awe. To write a scene like this actually takes heart, intelligence, and creativity....something sorely lacking today. This scene is actually moving. I rarely see anything I am moved by in today's superhero films. This is also the best ASMR ever. I wish this went on for another hour.
To me..THIS is the greatest scene in movie history.
Agreed
Bruh
The first time Superman takes flight in The Fortress of Solitude was the first successful flying test of Christopher Reeve and he purposely banked his body as he came close to the camera. Donner loved it and kept the shot in the final film.
WOW now that is FILM MAKING!!!
Too many memories from this 1 clip! Reminds me of my childhood days
The word for ‘son’ in my father’s language literally means “of my father’s heart”
Marlon Brando as Jor El. Epic!
I literally cried 😭 by watching this scene!
0:45 crazy to think that in this universe Clark would be 1,000 of years old by krypton standards
You are wrong on that. Is Krypton tech is 1,000 years older than Earth not age.
@@mary-annemueller9885 jor quite literally said it lmao 😭
1977
I love this Scene. Jor-El, "Speak !" / Clark: "Who am I ?"
He looks exactly like the newest superman actor.
What an amazing movie moment love the extended scenes in this
Superman was growing up he wasn't unusual child, but the Kents found him in a field and took him in raised him like a human boy
These music, the speech, scene…
Absolutely beautiful. 🥲
I get a little bit teary eyed every time i watch this scene..
Clark was a graduate of Kryptonian University, North Pole Branch. Bachelor of Science in Kryptology Major in Kryptonian Tech. Specialize in Typing and News Editorial.
Greatest Superhero movie and entrance of all time!
Supes' Jewish roots are well documented, so it's always a treat to see someone go "oh snap!" when they realize that on their own :D
Edit: whoops, shouldn't have skimmed your post. Hoo boy....
god is as real as superman is
The Pre Christian and Christian influences where pretty amazing and worked pretty damn well
@@DanofEarth 😂😂😂
Actually, Jor El means God. Well, El does. Jor is nothing.
Kal El means light God. Light meaning opposite of heavy, not illumination.
While I can see the clever wordplay and the apparent symbolism it very slyly implies, it technically doesnt mean anything. Sorry.
That monologue, followed by that score 🙌 chillz….
One of the greatest scenes in a great movie. Always wondered though why Jor-El told Clark he mustn't interfere in human history when his very presence on Earth as Superman would do that
To interfere in their history is to control them, to choose to be their God; he interferes in their history later because though they are important; so is he
He was saying you are so powerful you can reverse time. Foreshadowing when he saves Lois.
That is why Superman 4 is a bad movie.
@@commonsenseking6386 Superman IV is a bad movie because of bad writing and horrible special effects, not because he decided to interfere. That was the one interesting idea the movie had.
@@axebomber2108 I'd like to think that Jor-El respected human choice, and not to change history. This puts the onus on humans to figure out their shit moving forward. Kal-El as a catalyst, of course.
This is so epic ^^
Marlon Brando, you are the best
Yep truly a god send
@@leejee88 no doubt ^^
Hey Jor-El pronounced the word Krypton correctly once, but then he referred to it as "Kriptin" in the same speech.
well he did spend most of his time on set completely drunk & never learned his lines, he was well into the lazy asshole phase of his career.
You are criticizing a Kryptonian. That is their vernacular, he was trying to demonstrate street credit with Kal, back in the Hizzy Kryptizzy.
My Grandfather pronounced it that way, and he was from Ireland. Terrence Stamp’s Zod also pronounced it that way.
@@HereticDuo would YOU be brave enough to correct the freaking Godfather on his pronunciation?!? Because I wouldn’t!!
@@HereticDuowhich I think Chris Reeve was right to call him out for not long after Superman The Movie came out, tbh. If Brando had "lost his passion" as Chris put it, why tf didn't he just quit Hollywood and find something else to do? That's what I'd like to know.
I enjoy the biblical resonance, God sending/becoming the Son out of love for Mankind.
I’ve always like Christ allegory’s with supermen being like the only begotten son of the fathet
Yep, there are many other Christ allegorical films: dark knight rises, mask of Zorro, the matrix, terminator 1 & 2, torn legacy. You can also find little allegories in the Daniel Craig Bond films: Casino royale, quantum of solace, skyfall and Spectre.
so he traveled through time and space within the fortress for 12 years. Seems the fortress had time travel as well as space travel technology
Victor Alistein No, he was really there for all that time, from age 18-30. That's why he seemed so backward when he got to Metropolis, using words like "swell."
@@ralphgoodman4670 No he just comes from a different culture than the vanity and pessimism of Metropolis life. Which I think further adds to the saying "the world is what you make it".
opening scenes had Lara remarked we were thousand of years behind Krypton technology
@@ralphgoodman4670 this made me laugh so hard
Or he just toked up so it seemed that long.
This scene gives me goosebumps!
Thank you very much, Flashback FM, for uploading this interesting video of "Superman" so that I can see it again.

The music makes the space journey sweet.
It's a good thing that he turned or he would have flown right into the camera at the end.
😁
The Best iconic intro between Jor-el & Kal-el. ✨
Thank u for this , my DVD didn't have all this dialogue . ! When I thought it was epic enough,,,
By today’s standards; movies can easily make a man fly with the FX we have. Back then, they used every trick they could think of and it still holds up. That’s dedication
to the art
The Greatest Scene by the Greatest Actor of all time.
Only Marlon Brando could have pulled off the role of father of Superman.
I hate that they try to make these comic book character movies "real" it takes away from the fantasy of the stories
I love watching this!
Oh so he didn't want to tell Lois his age because he was thousands of years old
Exact method of travel is quite irrelevant for story and even if Kal-El's pod traveled in real-space time dilation would have kept him alive. Maybe for him that voyage was very short.
If that's the case, then how did Jor El know about Einstein's theory of relativity before he even reached Earth?
@@L-eye-tBecause Krypton discovered Relativity centuries before humans did.
@@kylerbelshaw7042 Did they discover who Einstein was centuries before humans did too? Jor-El's recording called it HIS theory of relatively.
This 5 minutes of film surpasses anything made over the last 30 years

Marlon Brando is a legendary actor, actors like him are quickly disappearing.
"You are the only survivor of the planet Krypton."
What about Zod, Ursa and Non, as well as all the other Kryptonians who were abroad?
Ralph Goodman
Perhaps being imprisoned in the Phantom Zone was assumed to be synonymous with a virtual death sentence?
@@sulufest and what about with Kara...SUPERGIRL?.
Ralph Goodman he forgot about the Phantom Zone, I guess
It follows the comics. Originally, he was the last. Supergirl, et al (including the miniaturized city of Kandor) came later; and, to be blunt, cheapens the whole Superman mythos. The Phantom Zoners are an interesting story, but only as "those who must not be trusted/allowed to remain in the Universe." Superman's story is, by necessity, a noble tragedy.
@@mr.adventure0142 Yay, and Krypto the Super dog!
Mr. Brando's portrayal of a father is one of wisdom, strength but gentile leadership and thoughtful guidance; a terrific role model.
Marlon Brando does an excellent job of portraying Jor - El, Superman's father.
