Definitely not...the wisdom, depth, and maturity of this message has brought me to tears several times. It's messaging is truly timeless and I still hold it very close as the aspiraration I require personally living as a human. Peace. 🙏
This film is the standard at which all superhero films are compared to. Yes it is dated, but the story and the acting is bar none. It still holds up to today and is better than some superhero films to date.
@TheGoldcountry No my last name is not Luther. I have a great admiration for Superman. I remember in 1985 my father went to a business Banquet, and met Christopher Reeve in person. I still have his autograph to this day. Its laminated. It says, 'To my Pal Matt. Christopher Reeve.' It was a real blessing to have that.
The symbols are very cool in this scene. Brando comes in with the mask, and as the Father symbol, imparts the knowledge of mankind and the universe in 5 minutes that supposedly lasts for 13 years. When the impartation is complete, Kal-El understands his immortality, and the powers manifest. Superman comes in like a modern angel ready to fight for truth...justice....very cool stuff.
@MMZERO9 You can see shades of this film in Batman Begins and the first Spider-man film. They really did a good job with Superman the Movie, and it remains one of the top comic book movies of all time.
the entire scene is a work of art. The way they cut it together just sends shivers up my spine. e.g. Brando talking at the end, the shot of superman in the distance and the music kicking building up just sends SHIVERS people. FUCKIN SHIVERS!
Amazing how Mario Puzo created such an even more powerful and regal as well as iconic character for Marlon Brando to embody for the first time in a motion picture then the Godfather just a few years later! I still can't get over that Puzo scribed both stories, incredible!!!
When I was a kid I remember watching it repeatedly on HBO thinking man it's kind of cool but I wish there was a way to skip to the end! This was before I knew who Brando was! Now since buying the video I still watch the whole sequence up to when Ka-El flies out for the first time of the FOS! Donner at the end of this sequence just lived up to so many boys imaginations! Finally after decades after the character's conception having the greatest superhero of all time fly out of that scene and into our hearts!!!
John Williams wrote beautiful music in this movie. Especially in this scene at 2:51. I think Marlon Brando did the best acting in the movie. Brando did a much better job at playing "Jor-El" then Russell Crowe did!!!.
theefrankguy why you feel the need to put down Crowe version of jor-el that is based on different telling of the character is disappointing. If you don't like man of Steel! That is fine man. But too many of you people just can't understand that man of steel is based on different and more modern telling of superman. And no disrespect man. If you knew anything about comics! YOU WOULD KNOW THIS! Cause one of the greatest superman stores of all time is book called birthright! Maybe you should read it! Cause alot of this movie is based of the novels birthright and the 1986 book MAN OF STEEL!
All he said was that Brando was better...that's a subjective argument...this isn't about which is a more faithful version, but which version any individual happens to like better. Both Crowe and Brando are superb actors, but I would say that Brando's vocal talents and presence are slightly more impactful than Crowe's. Also, there's a distinct difference in the content of their speeches: Crowe's Jor-El says humanity "will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall..." which is a pretty sad picture of humanity, whereas Brando's version says "They are a good people...they wish to be..." which presents a kinder picture of us. This is just one example of the major philosophical differences between the two films...one says "You will save this race because they are stupid and weak, but they have potential", the other says "these are good people, but they could be better, and I'm sending you to help them." Both are valid interpretations of Superman...it's a question of which one works better, and that question is debatable.
If I remember correctly, the S symbol is the family crest of the House of El, as they were nobility back on Krypton. The fact that it just happens to resemble an Earth S is a happy coincidence.
OF course it is. because this is the when superman became superman.. this when he learned who he is why he's here. This is the true begining of superman..
Marlon Brando could be a complete asshole, I don't think anyone could disagree, but he did the job here. Maybe he liked Superman, I don't know. Maybe he just mailed it in. Either way, it works.
The Batman craze is in right now, but when I look at the turmoil in the world today, I don't see Batman (no disrespect at all). From about the 4:25 mark on says it all; the world needs Superman.
silverstar71784 I enjoy Batman a lot But honestly, Superman is the best because he represents what humanity can achieve instead of showing the angst of humanity.
It's the sequencing & how it frees you from attraction to material things. You must struggle against The Universe & Evil in how it evolves, threatening everyone. You can't still watch this film & be Atheist.
I spotted this only in these last few days (since Father's Day), but fascinating to note that upon attaining their maturity as a Young Man venturing out into The World, both Superman and The Creature of Frankenstein experience a profound metaphysical need to turn to The North on their rite-of-passage solitary pilgrimage to seek an encouter with whatever is still left of his father and seek answers from him, at the very Ends of The Erath.
Now that I'm older I gotta think damn, imagine, twelve years will pass when I get out of here? Not only will my Earth mother be sick wondering if I am dead but I'm not gonna live experience my twenties! It's not like Ka-El/Clark would sew his wild oates in the traditional way of a young Earth man but that's one of the best times of your youth your. it would make a good SNL or FOD sketch. The minute Jor- El says twelve of your years will pass....Í8p9 be like, wait a minute! Did you say twelve years???...Sorry, no way Dad!!!
It seems more relevant in todays times for me...as a kid it was great but now I can appreciate it even more at times. Especially with a few drinks. Great scene.
yes, superman was sent to earth because his planet was doomed, but also because Jor- El wanted his son to use his powers to help the people of earth. His sarogate dad, Jonathan Kent said " son you are here for a reason" ,Part of Superman's destiny was to find himself and as Superman put it " Im here to fight for truth justice and the american way." "Their a great people Kal-El they only lack the light to show them the way, for this reason I have sent them you my only son.-Jor El.
@Amysuris - I could not agree with you more. I wish Hollywood would go back to making movies just like this...hands down the best Superman movie ever made.
If you watch the behind the scenes on the DVD Richard Donner says it was Christopher Reeves, and they said they didn't even expect him to do it and the entire film crew cheered after he did it, and I think you can kind of tell it's him anyway, he did his own flying in every other scene, why not this one.
best scene ever. except for those who dont have the patience to listen and understand about superman. the end part is to good when he flys away for the first time!
This was the scene I always went back to in the movie; it defined the whole theme of the character, not to mention the Judeo-Christian undertones and of course Brando's excellent acting. I loved that they restored some of the Jor-El footage in the Donner recut of Superman II as well as the new Superman Returns movie.
@JLC31383 He's literally taken away on a journey into another realm where he becomes the student to his father. So in fact, his question of "who am I?" is a loaded question. He essentially takes the masculine journey / warrior training the way Bruce Wayne did or Luke Skywalker. Or even the hobbits in Lord of the Rings. In each of the cases there is a father figure answering the question of "who am I" for the 'son' and providing knowledge, discipline and virtue.
Jor-El states out of the box that each of the galaxies he will pass through have their own individual laws of time and space; although this contradicts what we know now, it may explain some of the time dilation effects.
Why does he cut off that great piece of music at the end! I would love to just go into Williams brain and find out how he came up with just the right cues and arcs and choruses! Amazing to this day! He made Superman even more powerful than his mythology with this classic score! Plus years later hearing it all on Smallville as a young adult, just the chills ran down my spine all over again!
Orginally they wanted to used Brando's face althrough the scene with him speaking, but nothing fx wise work. So they decided to use the space footage that was made up from macro underwater footage instead. I think it works much better.
Grows up with special abilities and realizes he is meant to use them. At age 18, goes into the wilderness to find out who he is. 12 years later (age 30, around the same age as Jesus was when he began his ministry) he goes out into the world. Jor-El as the God/Father figure This is per the MOVIE version of Superman. The original creators (Siegel and Shuster) were Jewish and saw him as more of a Moses or Samson figure than a Christ allegory.
i think i like your reasoning better just because jor el stated that he had been dead for many thousands of superman's years. with that being said superman was with his father on a planet that would of been thousands of years older than earth, making superman already thousands of years older than the average human being, which is why he has those powers he evolved further than the average man.
I figured it was due to the effect of time dilation from interstellar travel causing Superman's relative local time to pass much more slowly in comparison to Krypton, meaning that even though to Clark he's 18 years old, an observer on Krypton would've experienced it as many thousands of years.
jor-el: "protect and save humans, but don't interfere with human history" kal-el: "wow, thanks for being so clear, creepy disembodied head hologram of my dad..."
Jor- El knew the earths sun would give his son the advantage he needed to survive. His intellect was far superior than any earthlings. He would look like one of them but he would not be one of them. His father felt his son would best benefit by comming to earth. If look at the beginning of the movie Jor El s wife questioned the reason of sending Kel- El to earth because the people of earth are so primitive. thounds of years behind Krypton. this is other reasons why he was sent to earth.
I'm always trying to find the score or soundtrack for this scene in the back without the talk but never can find it. It's a good soundtrack and it it plays the track with the talk of Jor-El.
I wonder what exactly Clark Kent was doing while he was in training to become the Man of Steel during those 12 years. He enters that area as an 18-year-old boy, and then he leaves as a 30-year-old man by flying away for the first time as Superman. I always was left wondering if he actually spent a decade plus two more years doing everything he needed to- or did he just listen to what we only saw and then discover 12 years had actually passed after the speech he was given by his father was over?
They can be a great people Kal El. They wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way.... We can be great in the future. Or go the way of Krypton..
@hottgirl924 Well, this is the only story I know of where Clark Kent disappears for over a decade and reappears as Superman. I guess that was their way of saying the Man of Steel is who he actually is and Clark Kent is just someone he pretends to be so he can work a job and spend time as a regular human. Most other versions have him actually go to college and spend years studying so he can be prepared for his journalism career after he graduates. I have seen all live-action stories for Superman.
@aigomar I think fans of comics (like yourself) realize that a key part of the mythos of Superman is about Jor-El. He was a man of science who gave his only son to us. Superman only exists in our minds; and we should try to be like him.
Why was Clark Kent called ‘Jonathan Clark Kent’ in Superman I? Clark was Martha Kent’s maiden name in the comic book - and much later in the ‘Smallville’ series as well. Jonathan Kent was his adoptive Earth-father.
Quite honestly, I thought this movie was silly. After the first two acts, it started feeling more like a Looney Tunes cartoon than a serious Superman movie. But this speech is the redeeming feature. It's really motivating, and even a little sad.
"So my son, speak." I can imagine all sorts of questions:1) "Father, so what is a Coke and a smile?"2) "Father, what is this I hear about pussy?"3) "Father, if my future g/f Lois has tail, why doesn't her back end look like a horse or a dog?"4) "Father, tastes great or less filling?"5) "Father, how does a man's hair turn as red as Donald Trump's?"6) "Father, so how does Kim Kardashian possess more powers with her butt than I do?"7) "Father, if I can kick a football that far, why I wasn't I called by Tom Brady to help with deflategate?"8) "Father, is it illegal to yell movie in a firehouse?"9) "Father, is that green lefty substance I smoke also kryptonite? I seem to lose some of my powers when I indulge."10) "Father, how much real pork is in a McDonald's McRibb sandwich?"
If he has been dead many thousands of years, how can he know about humanity and human history? Organized civilization has only been around for about four thousand years. If it it took thousands of years through Kryptonian time travel to get to earth, how could Jor El have intricate knowledge of humanity?
Really? I thought the pauses looked natural. Like he was trying to think of the best phrase to describe this place. If he really did just forget them, then it's a tribute to his acting ability that he made it seem naturalistic.
@pluto4847 Are you somehow irritated by what I said? I simply said I liked Marlon Brando's performance in this movie. I was a little kid when this came out, and it is a great memory. Superman is a favorite icon of mine, and this movie (and Christopher Reeve) will always have a place in my heart. Is your last name Luthor, by any chance? BTW, addressing your questions- I don't know or care if he eats, dies, craps, farts, or whatever- Superman is AWESOME
am i the ONLY person who gets goosebumps when they hear this speech?
No I don't think that you are. I love this and listen to it from time to time.
It is not possible to watch this and not get goosebumps. This scene almost chokes me up--it's so powerful!!!
Lol you're not alone. One of the most amazing scenes in all of cinema
Definitely not...the wisdom, depth, and maturity of this message has brought me to tears several times. It's messaging is truly timeless and I still hold it very close as the aspiraration I require personally living as a human. Peace. 🙏
I never realized this scene was his training, very cool how its pieced togerher

William's music always gives me chillbumps. This is definitely some of Brando's best work as an actor.
By far this is the best superhero introduction ever seen!
The symbols are very cool in this scene. Brando comes in with the mask, and as the Father symbol, imparts the knowledge of mankind and the universe in 5 minutes that supposedly lasts for 13 years. An iconic moment in cinema to which Zach Snyder only distantly aspires to match.
I saw this movie in 77 78. it was splendid.. it's still a ball to watch now. they make movies like they used to.
jason75
The answer is 1978.

theefrankguy mine too
Great special FX for a 1978 movie.
I love the music in the background at 2:50 with jorel talking to kalel.
This Superman is a masterpiece. Marlon Brando was magnificent here. The casting in this movie was perfect.
amazing.... wow, still so powerful in 2018.
Michael Myers
Happy Birthday, 1978. 🎂

Cinematic Gold. Still gives me chills. I can only imagine how it felt witnessing this scene for the first time in the theater

O' the memories.... fantastic!!!
I love this scene were he realize that his father is from another planet and the speech that he gives is amazing thank you RUclips
2:52 John Williams sure knows how to set the mood for the space sequence in this scene.
still gives me goose bumps watchin brando in action as jor el
It's the sequencing & how it frees you from attraction to material things. You must struggle against The Universe & Evil in how it evolves, threatening everyone.

Yup. Still gives me goosebumps. 😱
Best superman scene ever, my favourite as a kid

I am glad that someone is preseverning this peice of film
Superman Is my hero!!!
Ryan Hogan
He is OUR hero.
One of my favorite movie scenes that are timeless.😀👍
there aint a fucker alive who could pull you right in the way Marlon Brando does in this scene. What a genius
It seems more relevant in todays times for me...as a kid it was great but now I can appreciate it even more at times.
Especially with a few drinks.
Great scene.

Modern movies don't have scenes like this anymore. Today's audience is sadly A.D.D.
I used to think that but i'm starting to think now maybe it's the crappy screen writers and directors are the ones with A.D.D.
@Amysuris - I could not agree with you more. I wish Hollywood would go back to making movies just like this...hands down the best Superman movie ever made.

love this scene one of the best
ohhh how I worship the first two movies in this series! They are magic.
best scene ever. except for those who dont have the patience to listen and understand about superman. the end part is to good when he flys away for the first time!

One of my fondest childhood moments was watching this scene for the first time.
you kept the end part. great
@JLC31383 He's literally taken away on a journey into another realm where he becomes the student to his father.
It's one of those things you shouldn't think too hard about.
Best scene from the movie. Don't you just love Superman?
Well done.
Truer word have never beeb spoken.
@cwell510 That is so right i think Batman begins took inspiration from this but had a more gritty edge whilst superman is full of hope!
Orginally they wanted to used Brando's face althrough the scene with him speaking, but nothing fx wise work. So they decided to use the space footage that was made up from macro
underwater footage instead. I think it works much better.
Thanks.
exactlly this scene is the basises for the entire superman films...... its how he became superman... and who he really was...
A great scene. Spiritual and down to earth.
he wanted his son to live .and he wasn't allowed to leave or stir a ruckus on his planet so he made sure that one of them got out alive.. ..
Grows up with special abilities and realizes he is meant to use them.
At age 18, goes into the wilderness to find out who he is.
12 years later (age 30, around the same age as Jesus was when he began his ministry) he goes out into the world.
Jor-El as the God/Father figure
This is per the MOVIE version of Superman. The original creators (Siegel and Shuster) were Jewish and saw him as more of a Moses or Samson figure than a Christ allegory.
it took superman 12000 years to become superman according to what jor el said in this video
I think he said "12 of your years would have passed". Keeps with the religious allegory. Jesus disappeared into the desert from age 18 thru 30..
Yes . Especially when he says I have sent my only son.I have a christian background so I can see the parralel.
i think i like your reasoning better just because jor el stated that he had been dead for many thousands of superman's years. with that being said superman was with his father on a planet that would of been thousands of years older than earth, making superman already thousands of years older than the average human being, which is why he has those powers he evolved further than the average man.
I figured it was due to the effect of time dilation from interstellar travel causing Superman's relative local time to pass much more slowly in comparison to Krypton, meaning that even though to Clark he's 18 years old, an observer on Krypton would've experienced it as many thousands of years.
wrong. he said 12 years have passed. He was 18 years old when his training began and 30 when it finished
jor-el: "protect and save humans, but don't interfere with human history"
kal-el: "wow, thanks for being so clear, creepy disembodied head hologram of my dad..."
That dude started flying.. Amazing scene the son becomes the father..
Running and jumping until he could fly like in Superman & Lois or virtual reality matrix showing the history of Krypton etc.
He said that line in Superman Returns at 2:38 and 4:35!
GochEm 30 That because the recordings are of Marlon Brando himself as Jor-El years after his passing (with the permission of his estate of course).
Alot of people forget. "It is forbidden to interfere with human history.
I am Constant as The Northern Star.
1:28 2 years later, No. That's not true... THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!
watch this scene with headphones on. trust me
RIP dad.
Classic GENIUS!
Chris Reeve flies away.
They can be a great people Kal El. They wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way....
We can be great in the future. Or go the way of Krypton..
3:05 thats the very start of superman 2
Steve Loughlin
what.
I believe this in description. Hercules story is the same depending on what story or type of film you see.
As a species, we're not showing much evidence of our 'greatness' these days
@aigomar I think fans of comics (like yourself) realize that a key part of the mythos of Superman is about Jor-El. He was a man of science who gave his only son to us. Superman only exists in our minds; and we should try to be like him.
Why was Clark Kent called ‘Jonathan Clark Kent’ in Superman I? Clark was Martha Kent’s maiden name in the comic book - and much later in the ‘Smallville’ series as well. Jonathan Kent was his adoptive Earth-father.
ditto and ditto
Quite honestly, I thought this movie was silly. After the first two acts, it started feeling more like a Looney Tunes cartoon than a serious Superman movie.
But this speech is the redeeming feature. It's really motivating, and even a little sad.
exactly!
@th0th No planet...just take a trip inside.
I believe it was Dianne Wiest who flies away.
Well, just tell me which planet I can rocket to to gain superpowers and I am so there. :-)
It sucks if they ever do a reboot, they wont have Brando...
is that sound glitch on all the DVD's and print transfers? Where he says "break the boundaries..." I even remember that on the old VHS
Maybe the crystal has been absobing Earth informastion sicne Kal-els ship first landed.
@4:39 Sooo I guess where the whole Jesus comparisons come from, huh..
Same reason everyone compares Neo to Jesus in The Matrix. Common themes, common characters.
See Joseph Campbell, et al. :)
