Are there better things than a world that's currently under isolation? Lots. And chances are we have some non-perishables that have been collecting dust just waiting for a chance to be used. But before we panic we won't be able to cook something satisfying, I am willing to bet you already have the essentials for an INCREDIBLY SIMPLE AND DELICIOUS soup right in your Instant Pot.
All it takes are TWO basic ingredients to get this soup started: beans and broth (or water). The rest of the seasonings are likely to be found in your cupboard and are totally up to you to customize this Basic Bean Soup into a hearty and delicious meal.
And since dried beans cook rapidly under pressure with no overnight soaking required, this is going to be done in record time.

It's very considerate to think of a recipe that people can make easily with a few cheap ingredients. Thank you!
Wonderful😋😋😋
roger that!
I add celery, carrots, ham, bacon, diced potatoes.
I was thinking to add some potatoes I have already too
William Lesh when do u add these
I hate boiled potatoes but I sure like the rest of your additions. :)
I add carrots, celery seed and a tbsp of red chilli flakes before pressure cooking. There are so many ways of making this. You could even add a bit of liquid smoke instead of ham if you don't eat meat.
I want to add this too! When did u add it to the soup ??
@4:28 he added the dry beans without washing them... That's how I did it for four decades. And then I tried washing(rinsing) them in a clear glass bowl. Just run water on them and agitate, dump the dirty water and repeat until the water stops being dirty. And yeah, sometimes the water looks like you just washed your dog in it. I always wondered why sometimes my beans tasted "earthy". RINSE YOUR BEANS!!
Keeps the stones out of your beans that way too!
I agree - he needs to wash his beans.
I pre soak them too. It gets rid of enzymes that can make digestion difficult (gas), cleans them and cuts way back on cook time.
If you re-watch the video he did rinse the beans you put them in a colander and rinsed them.
@@juliesmith7682 No, no he does not. Go to 4:19. He even says "my beans have not been soaked, they're totally dry". At what point do you even see a colander?
Great recipe. Only thing i would add is to make sure you go through your beans and check that you do not have any rocks in the bag and rinse the beans . That it was a great video idea.
Please make more of these kind of recipes! Using simple ingredients we already have in the cupboard. It is so helpful right now!! Thank you.
Hi there. I LOVE how you are giving substitute ingredients to use (onion/no onion, butter/Olive oil). You make it really easy to use what we have on hand. 🙌 Thank you.v☺️☺️
works great. i love that it has stainless steal pot inside ruclips.net/user/postUgkxG-7WiT7ocumjytOpHDFt632PL0pxXRAg and not the one with coating. we used to have a coated pot before, and the coating slowly peels, and i am sure went into the food that we cooked. Absolutely love stainless steel, and will not use a coated product again. This pot has many settings and many buttons, and i need to sit down with a manual to figure out which setting to use. I used the basic functions, and even though i am not technologically skilled, i turned it on and assembled it without any help.Very satisfied with this product overall.
I've been making pretty much this exact same recipe for a while, but I use the 15-bean soup mix, and also add in a smoked turkey leg into the pot before cooking. Once it's done, the meat falls off the turkey leg and adds amazing flavor.
@J G what about a bat wing? ;P
Can you put raw chicken in with beans before cooking?
THANK YOU! Oh my goodness…this sounds sooooo amazing and my hubby doesn’t like bacon so this Is such a great idea!
Sounds yummy!🥰
I'll bet turkey necks would be good too. Ever tried that?
Thank you for the base recipe! My version tonight had: 5 diced hot Italian sausage (from the freezer), 1 onion, several small sweet peppers, chopped fresh green beans (cause they were in the fridge), 2 gutted yellow squash (cause they were in the fridge), chicken broth (from the freezer), chopped garlic, red chili flakes, ground mustard, ground cumin and about 2 cups lentils from a bulk container I had on hand. I didn't stop and blend. I let it go through the whole cycle. It was so delicious!
You’re a great speaker! Thanks for your positivity during these strange times. Just got an instant pot. Gonna make the best of this lockdown and try to make some bean soup!
I KNEW you would have something up your sleeve for us! I'm going nuts confined in my home this weekend and watching your videos always cheers me up, especially now! It's just nice to be reminded we're all in this together and even during a voluntary quarantine, we can still eat well! ♥️
When I saw this video I knew I had to try it with the dried navy beans in my cabinet. I followed your suggested ingredients but also added some fresh spinach that I needed to use up. OMG it was amazing! Thanks so much for all your inspiration to get me in the kitchen to cook.
Love that your doing these special recipes with food people may already have on hand. Bless you.
Perfect, Jeff..... comfort food for “social distancing”..... thank you so much!
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 It was a joke……
As always, spectacular!! Thank you, Jeff!!
Another winner! It's delicious! Thanks again!
I have LOVED your channel for about a year now (wish I had come on earlier), and I'm in the process of watching ALL your videos!!!! I've referred you to everyone I know who cooks IP. Today, I embrace your attitude of hominess!!!! Thanks for posting and for all your creativity!!!!!
Thank you for the basics. Last night I made lima bean and ham hock soup. This is the time to get down to healthy, hearty basics! Beans in the Instant Pot are awesome!!

This looks like the perfect ‘comfort’ food during our cold winters! Much thanks for posting.
This was the perfect video I was looking for thank you so much for giving so many options
When the time is up, I turn on saute and lightly boil for a few minutes to thicken.
I just made this bean soup exactly the way Jeffrey did For my husband and I. Absolutely delicious! Thank you!

Wow, what a combination of ingredients! Thank you.
I’m making this bean soup today. I love that you give us ideas of seasoning to add if we want. Great video!
👌 AMAZING 🙌
I'm so excited to do this. They remind me of my Mom's Navy bean soup from 40 years ago.
Keep up the great work....
Wow lover that reserve technique. Thanks!
This is genius and I’m making this today! Can’t wait for your book to come out, I ordered it as soon as I heard about it. Thank you, Jeffrey.
Made this today with a few additions ( celery, carrots, kale and chorizo) and it came out perfectly. Thanks!
Fabada?
Thanks Jeffery for always having such great content.
Incredible.
Most beautiful bowl of soup I've ever seen

Just need some corn bread to go with the bean soup. Thank you for doing this video. I just bought a couple bags of beans to attempt bean soup. Love your videos.
You are such a fun person to listen and watch. Love this video and I was looking how to cook beans..You gave me an awesome recipe..easy. Thanks
This was absolutely delicious!
Love your videos - thanks for sharing!
Perfection. I must make this one!
Oh now that looks delicious! Love bean soup or just beans. Thank you; you are awesome ❤️
Glad I stumbled across this channel, love my instant pot, and love using it. Making this soup tonight.
I love this channel as well as 6 sisters stuff
I loved making the soup with my new pressure cooker… And this meal is completely vegan without the bacon! Really delicious thanks for sharing!
Great seasonings and recipe.
I’m making this today! I’m so excited. It’s raining outside so it’s gonna be cozy.
I made this tonight with a 13-bean mix, adding smoked paprika. Damn good! Thanks for the inspiration!!!🙏💗🙏💗 Pre-ordered your book. Can't wait!
This looks great! Thank for so much for making a positive statement.
Bean soup is very economical. Love how you season it well.
Great time for beans. Great video! Thanks!❤️❤️
I like the puree idea.
Love your recipes and personality!
Wow. So good. Please keep these type of easy, in your cupboard, recipes coming. This was amazing and I’m not a bean person. I am now. I added smoked paprika (had it in my cupboard).
Bean soup in the Instant Pot is the best!! Very comfort food. Great video. Thyme and beans go great together. I often add a dried bay leaf when the beans are cooking. Thanks Jeffrey. Much needed now even though it has been a whole year since this aired. We are still in quarantine! Melaney from SoCal
Cornbread would be delicious with this soup!!
Awesooome..nice eye opener on bean cooking
looks delicious!! Thank you!!!
Looks delish
Looks delicious. Mother made some bean soup for Dad because he was from TN and he grew up on it. Dad liked smoked ham hock in it and of course the cornbread cooked in a cast iron skillet. I didn't like it as a kid but grew to tolerate it later. You made me hungry for a bowl of bean soup. Especially now with the Instant Pot, it's easy peasy.
We often ate this. Originally survival food that became a family favorite. We never called it soup, though, just a pot of beans. We almost made some today, but no Hicks or necks to be found!
Jeff what a caring recipe in the current situation, thanks. God bless you. Colin from England...
Excellent instructions. I'm glad I found your channel.
Looks delicious! Thanks!
This recipe will be one of my fav from now on.
Love this recipe
Jeff, you are the best! Way to be current and comforting. Social distancing allowed me time to make bone broth from all my frozen Costco rotisserie chicken carcasses (in my Instant Pot, duh), so bring on the soup. Keep the videos coming! 💗 Heidi
Looks great. Another recipe making me hungry.
Just saw this a couple of days ago. Made it tonight and it was AWESOME! Thank you for your great ideas!
Keep on cooking, I love your site. You make good stuff.
Looking forward to the book. Can’t believe it’s nearly April already. Stay healthy. Crazy times.
Love this. Thanks sweetie!!
Just made this and OMG SO SO SO GOOOOOOOD...did everything you said to sautés and add the broth and the beans and cooked for 35 minutes....then just removed a half cup of beans and smashed to a paste added back in pot...then the italian seasoning, tyme, smoked paprika 1 tbsp...the maple syrup and i browned 1lb of ground chuck and drained it and added it to the pot ...sauted on medium for 15 minutes so it could thicken up.....it was so so so so gooooood ...MY VERSION OF ITALIAN WEDDING SOUP ....THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHOWING US TO BE MORE CREATIVE IN THE KITCHEN.....
I made this tonight. It was so delicious. My kids asked if it was enough for tomorrow lunch. Served it with rice. This will be in the monthly rotation. I’m enjoying all your videos😊
Yum!! & thanks for sharing this!
Gotta say that the overnight soak is worth it. The beans cook much more evenly.
@ Hoji Scott , yes my friend , i agree 100% , i'm 57 yr., old irishman from rural Kentucky, cooking since i was 9, always soak your beans overnight for tenderness, taste, even cooking, & if they cause you any stomach bloating/discomfort or flatuant problems check my post i will make as to an easy remedy for that ( unless he does) . I like to read sub/viewer posts before i watch the video recipe. Soup beans, cornbread & raw onions are a staple meal in rural Ky. God Bless you & yours friend, getting ready to view the recipe
Hoji Scott. How long do you cook them in the IP after soaking overnight?
@@lilybee_ drain the water and proceed like normal, I've done it both ways, I prefer not soaking cause it's easiest, but soaking does yield a better product.
@@lilybee_ I do beans in IP all the time. I use unsoaked 30 min on high. Can't see a difference with soaked/unsoaked.
Pre-soaking beans allows them to get rid of oligosaccharides, the chemicals that make you fart when you eat beans.
I just got a pot at the thrift store, Thanks Jeff I love your vids! Gotta get your book!
Just what I needed 😊
I grew up on bean soup and I still love it to this day. The Instant Pot is great for it. Thanks and love the seasonings.... Claudia
I grew up on too but Grandma cooked the beans with a hammock. With some of grandma's fresh baked bread. Can't wait to get to heaven :-)
Don't know how ham-hock got changed to hammock. Stupid spell check.
@@jefferynordgulen4436 I knew what you meant, spell checker does that to me a lot. My Mom used ham hocks and I do too.....
@@lucilleball5970 yah I knew you got it; but I'm the guy that has ragged on people for using your instead you're so shame on me.
@@jefferynordgulen4436 lol
Loved your video!!Thanks for the tip on the Better Than Bouillon. I’m a fan now👍🏻😁
Best beans I ever tasted .
i've been looking for a good bean recipe, thanks!
My Mom made this when I was a kid but she put the dumplings in it made it a family favorite truly amazing, Thanks.
I love your recipes, thank you!!! I have your books 👍
Looks great going to.make this soup.
Hey, Jeff! Just made the soup! I had to use ham stock instead and I also added a finely chopped celery stalk and a couple of thinly sliced carrots. As it turned out, my Northern Beans were still a little too hard so I cooked them an additional 15 minutes. They turned out perfect. I also used all the spices maple syrup and it turned out delicious!
Fantastic job. I came across you when searching for Oso Bucco. These two are both stellar. Thanks for sharing. Incredible flavors.
This is being added to my recipe book as I type. Thanks for sharing!
He just kept adding stuff. Love it!!!
Great recipe trying it out now
Another wonderful recipe for the Instant Pot, I'm going to make this with some left over pork this weekend.....I call it winner winner bean dinner. Does anyone else chuckle when Jeffrey says "Budder" cracks me up.
Look delicious 😋
Dare I say that your enthusiasm is contagious. But in a good way. I hope everyone is well.
Thanks! It’s so helpful to know the recipe with minimum ingredients during lockdown. I’m in queens too! Stay safe
New subscriber here! I posted on Facebook yesterday that I had made my first instant pot meal and several of my friends recommended that I check you out. I'm so glad I did because I've been wanting to make bean soup but I haven't found the right recipe. This one is it! I'll just add some ham instead of bacon and it will be pretty close to what I was raised on. Thank you!
