My mother was Cuban and I was raised in south Florida. Adding vinegar at the end of the simmer was something she always did for the whole pot. She didn't add lime during the cooking, but lime wedges, along with diced raw onion were served on the side for those that wanted them. Adding the olive oil at the end to each served bowl depended on how how family budget was going that month. Sometimes yes, but usually no. A bowl of black beans and some Cuban bread was a frequent meal in my childhood.
I made this today. I followed everything except I made my own vegetable broth with NO SALT. I finished with the avocado and no fat sour cream. This was THE BOMB!! THE BEST BLACK BEAN SOUP I HAVE EVER EATEN!!! ANNNNND I MADE IT for the first time ever. I LOVE black beans. Your recipe is AWARD WINNING. 🎉❤🎉❤
I found him for a caramel video man do I wish I found him 1st but on my second attempt my caramel was perfect the 1st one had chunks of sugar 😅 the 1st video didn’t mention to have the butter and cream out at room temperature until the end of the video….
Thank you John. I don't know WHY you're apologizing. Isn't this the whole point of making these videos and recipes, to share your favorite flavors and, in the process, teach us? It doesn't have to be invented or written by you. What makes it authentic is the fact that it comes from the HEART. That's why we LOVE your channel and you teaching us. Sheeeeeesh!! I gotta go rescue things like empty canning jars from the garage now that the tree is off of it. Will make this recipe soon.
John, I have seen so many people (cooks) drain the beans , but that juice has some much flavor in it. And it helps to thicken the soup a little. Don't waste good flavor. But to each their own. Love your videos. God bless you and your family
I just made this tonight. The recipe went into my (recipe) binder, right away. While it was cooking, husband came in the house and exclaimed how wonderful it smelled (I'd just added the optional smoked paprika). Served it with simple jasmine most basic cilantro rice and all the garnishes featured here. Crusty bread w/Euro butter. WE LOVED IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH for this recipe. 💓
I'm cuban and the main ingredient for black beans is green peppers we also use onions some garlic not to overpower the flavor of course pepper, oregano vinager, tiny bit of sugar, salt . If you use can beans you don't have to rinse them ( this was a first one for me) I make black beans often but never do I puree some of the beans???? The black bean potage Thickens by the cooking time. Now left over beans you can make black bean puree. Puree them well serve on a soup plate and add a drizzle of olive oil and top with some cilantro. Sometimes chicharrones are added on top for delicious crunch.
This was way too good. I added some bell peppers before the beans but otherwise stuck to the recipe (I did use organic dry beans that I soaked). To die for!!! My husband is cuban and can eat canned goya bean soup 7 times a day if you let him. I was looking for the same taste but something that's not in a tin with hidden ingredients. When I tell you this is 10 times better and healthier it's without exaggeration. This recipe is so good I went back and made another huge batch and canned it. Now I have a full shelf of glass jars filled with delicious soup that can be ready as soon as it's reheated. It was dirt cheap to make and so so so much healthier. I can't thank you enough. Best youtube find this year for sure.
Wowie! Not only does this look easy and quick to make, it looks very affordable to make. I am very much on a budget and these are stuff I already have and I need to save for a week of dinner and I think I can have enough for a week
I just made a pot of black beans with my stock I make from leftover bones. I had too much liquid so wanted a recipe to try making soup. I saw you photo along with a recipe and said yep that is it. I also needed one without a bunch of extra things I did not have on hand. Bravo! Will be making this soon.
YES! Caribbean food! So, a couple of things, I am from Costa Rica, here we eat rice and beans on EVERY. SINGLE. MEAL. And when I say every single meal is even for breakfast. Of course, we pride ourselves to be rice and beans connoisseurs and let me tell you guys, this recipe SLAPS! STAMP OF APPROVAL. As John mentioned, there are variations of this black bean soup thoughout Latin America I guess, but it does have its key components: the black beans, cumin, salt and pepper, and some might say oregano. My familys recipe includes one chicken tight that we braise with the veggies, plenty or hard boiled eggs we add to the soup, as a costarican, our staple: Salsa Lizano (which is worcestershire and it KILLS on any bean recipe, especially chili con carne) and I, like John, add avocado, sour cream, and then as something extra pico de gallo with lots of lime and cilantro. We generally make it from scratch (no canned beans) and with the aqua fava, you could make some refried beans (delicious with patacones) not forgetting to add the secret ingredient (one shot of espresso) OR you can make some traditional costarican breakfast: gallo pinto. OR if feeling a bit more caribbean "rice and beans" (which is the caribbean version WITH coconut oil, yum).
I made this tonight, and it was the best black bean soup I've ever eaten! Instead of celery I used two chopped up poblano peppers. Another thing I did was to chop up the stalks on the cilantro and add to the soup while reserving the tops for garnish. I added the juice of one medium lemon and a shake of red pepper flakes, fresh ground black pepper and salt as well as the cumin and oregano. A dollop of sour cream and cilantro garnish in the bowl. Incredible soup!! Next time I might retain a chunk of the onion and mince it for the topping plus avocado and crusty bread❤.
I'm from Venezuela, and I grew up eating black beans, pinto beans, lentils, chickpeas... All kinds of beans with rice and avocados from the tree in my grandmother's house. Her secret for the vegetable base was to put white vinegar after the spices, letting the alcohol evaporate and making that acidity give an incredible touch to the vegetable base, cumin and coriander can never be missing. And we give it that dairy touch with grated white cheese, lots of cheese! But sour cream helps too! Your recipe looks delicious, congrats!
I grew up with smooth black bean soup. My mom added a little Sherry topped with a slice of lemon. I would squish my lemon with my spoon to release the juice & mix it in. It’s SO good!
You also need to master the art of substitution. For ex., No sour cream? Use yogurt. Can't get buttermilk? Measure one cup of milk and add 1 Tbsp of lemon juice or vinegar.
I’ve been a silent viewer of yours for a few years now and I want to tell you that your recipes are always so so amazing. I usually hate when recipe videos do a lot of talking but I am immersed by your dedication, passion, and talent to cooking/baking. It never feels like the video is being dragged like a lot of cooking videos I watch. Anytime I want to make something I always go straight to your channel ❤❤
looks very good. I’m from El Salvador and our black bean soup is definitely more runny, less thick. We add rice, sour cream, queso duro (any salty briney cheese such as feta), and pork meat.
I often add vinegar to soups and stews for a bit of acid. My favorite add, however, is lime juice. Chicken soup or chicken broth with lime juice (for me, a lot thereof) is wonderful. It's a tonic when you're sick.
Very nice. I make it with dried beans and cook it in a pressure cooker. Add tomatoes and some hot salsa, no cumin. Immersion blender and yogurt garnish with a little chive for color. Looks great and tastes even better. There are all sorts of BB recipes including some that are incredibly complex but which produce spectacular results. I'm lazy and like easy.
@@Biggiiful Perhaps I just don't have a sufficiently precise definition of the word "soup". Is it just a matter of physical consistency? If soups are thin and stews are thick, then my version is more like a stew because I like it thick and often over rice.
Every Cuban family has a similar recipe. It’s so important that it’s a staple recipe along with the roast pork at everyones Christmas dinner. Everyone makes them like their parents and grandparents taught them. My family added a sprinkle of dried oregano 2-3 bay leaves plus minced red and green peppers to the sofrito along with onions and garlic and a splash of vinegar and red wine at the end. We don’t blend but squish (just a little)the beans a little in the pot with o wooden spoon. If you use the canned beans as a shortcut always rinse them but if you soak them do it overnight. The smart and final brand black beans are excellent. Black beans are made by every Cuban family and they are eaten year round and often served with white rice and plain chips and avocado salad. Yum.(a healthy economical dish)❤
Lovely...I usually make this using chopped onions ,ginger ,garlic ,tomatoes and sauteeing in oil...The tomatoes imparts the sour factor ...Then add the soaked, rinsed ,boiled beans with chopped coriander leaves, cumin and coriander roasted and blitzed coarsely ,chillies green chopped or paprika ,salt to taste ...I liked the blitzed beans step ..I mash the beans with the potato masher to thicken the gravy ...Add garam masala and butter after simmering for sometime to infuse the flavors and served with coriander leaves or cream..
My mom has made a particular lentil soup recipe my whole life and a splash of good sherry is a must. Vinegar also works for things like this too. I’m making this for dinner this week now!!
I just made this and it was, by far, the BEST black bean soup I've ever tasted, and that includes soup from restaurants as well as homemade. Thanks, John, for another winner! 😀😁😋😛
I cut the recipe in half so I used only one can, because it's only my husband and me. John K has two growing boys, so he and his hubby would need both cans😆😆@@carolynnadey56
I just made this delicious black bean soup! It came out great! I added spinach which worked well Had to use a lemon because I didn't have a lime but that worked too. Served with some shredded cheddar and a dollop of sour cream on top. Was a hit for sure. I will definitely make again. Thank you! Love your recipes!
My gosh never thought of using can black beans. Always cooked the dry ones. Took a long time. This is so easy to do. Also never thought of taking two cups out of the soup and blending it up and putting back in the pot with the rest of the soup. Thank you so much for this recipe. And for the tips you share. Just love you and your Lil family. You always make me smile. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
If you have an instant pot you can make it there very quickly. What I do is make up 1-2# of beans in the IP and freeze the first quart the rest goes pretty fast in my house for topping salads, refried beans, burritos, soup, etc.
Hello John, I am a huge fan of your recipes. I started following you for your cakes, cookies and desserts. But recently, I've been obsessed with your savory recipes too! I love your miso glazed salmon recipe 😍 Your mashed potato recipe is another favorite of mine! I grew up in India. So these recipes are very new to me but OMG I love them! And the way you teach is just amazing. Even an amateur cook can do a great job if they follow your instructions!! Thank you for everything!
I was walking in market last week, noticed that the black beans were calling me to buy them. I left them since I don't know how to cook with them. I mostly use Peruvian. Now I gotta stop by the market again and get those black beans! So excited to go home and try this!! ❤️
YUM! I have all the things in stock to make this tomorrow! When making my family recipe for Czech potato dill soup- vomacka- I add a dash of cider vinegar before serving, which Mom and Grandma did. When I worked in a restaurant decades ago the secret to their split pea soup was a bit of dry sherry before serving.
Thank you John for sharing your talent with us, were we can watch you and then go see the written recipe. It rea!ly helps alot. We all learn differently. Your soup came out delicious.
I don't know if this is a Honduran thing, but my grandma cooks bacon in the pot, then heats the onions with that oil. Then comes the black beans and stock, it never gets pulsed. After simmering she adds an egg for each person and then serves the black bean soup.
I made this... Happy. I did have to use lemon juice instead of lime and I went a little heavier on some of the spices, AND it came out great. Thank you.
New fan here, just got my book yesterday and made my husband the olive oil cake this past weekend. I've been eating it daily ever since. I never thought of myself as a baker, just a cook so cakes are way out of my comfort zone. You made it 'easy peasy.. olive oil squeezy.' I'm going to add this black bean soup to our menu this week to break out of a cooking rut we are in.
Thanks for saying there's more than one way to season black bean soup. Some people don't realize each country has its own seasoning ... Each region does, too.
I’m half Romanian, half Hungarian and we top our bean soups with homemade finely shredded fresh horseradish root that’s kept in vinegar/water and salt solution. Even my kids prefer it this way, tangy!
Sending love from Massachusetts! Love all of your recipies and I so admire your clean bright kitchen and no nonsense approach! Black bean soup is my favorite so I can't wait to make this and i will probably add tomatoes, tumeric and some black pepper for health. Thank you!
I definitely add lime or lemon at the finish of soups which have veggies. Not only do the flavors brighten up, but the veggies keep their shape retaining that bite even after simmering. And they keep some shape even after reheating.
Just before seeing this video I had decided to make a black bean soup for dinner tonight. Perfect timing! I’ve known about dressing soup with oil and vinegar - particularly with bean based soups.
Thrilled to discover this as I have too many onions & carrots on hand right now. I am vegetarian & I eat soups all year long. No matter how hot it gets in Florida the soups on! Thanks so much.
Delish, I love all these random veg soups, whatever is at hand goes in. I use the water in cans from all my beans in my soups except for fava beans, those I rinse.
I never cared for black bean soup before but this recipe was amazing! Just made it and it is perfect. Followed the recipe but also added in some coriander cuz i didn't have any cilantro.
Not many cooks that I've watched have gone into things like adding an acid like lime or vinegar and why, so kudos to you! I enjoyed your delivery, and the sneaky method of blending some of the soup to make it creamy!
I am from Colombia and we make diferent kinds of beans, white, green ,black, red. They are delicious!! I make white beans with pork rack, delicioso, espectacular!!
Hi, love your dish. I will incorporate this recipe into one of my favorites. I normally sauté my onions garlic & carrots aldente then remove them from the pan & set aside. Soak black beans overnight with white wine & plenty of water. Rinse & Cook black beans adding Vegetable broth, dash red wine vinegar bay leaf & all the spices you added. Cook for 50 minutes then add vegetables and cook another 5 minutes. I make dumplings & add them on top & cook for another 5KW MT. 🇺🇸 minutes. Yum yum. Try it.
I made it this afternoon for lunch and to have the rest of the week and WOW! It's so delicious and came together quickly. Thank you! I also made your blood orange cheesecake for dessert!! I'll let you know how it goes!
This looks delicious. Reminds me in look of chili, which I hate chili. But this has different spices than what is in chili. I will definitely try this.
This looks great. I just made some Feijoada (sp) and it was amazing. It’s a stew rather than a soup. I did not drain the beans and next time I will start with dry black beans.
When I lived in Hawaii, my husband and I had Portuguese bean soup at a place called the Spindrifter, I think; out at the Kahala Mall. It was excellent. I've often thought about it and wished I had asked the Chef for the recipe.
I ❤ beans🥰 I like to add beans in different dishes; especially soups. I made your black bean recipe. OMG, it was DELICIOUS 😋🥣 I made a big pot full. Between my daughter and myself, we ate the whole pot with only a small bowl leftover. I didn't want to seem greedy and hide this small tasty bowl. So, as a good mom, I saved it for her. I wanted to make it again the next day, but I don't want to over indulge. I think once a week should be good for now. It was DELICIOUS 😊😍💋👍
Just made this tonight. Used chicken broth instead. It was a flavor BOMB 💣 💥 Made with mexican cornbread though because my husband loves it! Thank you!
This bean soup looks absolutely mouth-watering! The flavors and presentation are perfect. I can't wait to give it a try. Thanks for sharing such a delicious recipe.

I love a great Black Bean Soup. I attempted to make it and used dry black beans several times but I didn't achieve the flavor or texture I was looking for. I look forward to trying your recipe. ❤️
Sounds good. When I lived in Puerto Rico we had this over rice..like the rice asi grew up in Louisiana, a staple. Going to try this as been looking for a good recipe! Thanks!
Thank you, this looks yummy! :) Black bean soup is always a great choice. I like how you made yours. Why not put the juice from the beans straight into the pot? Why rinse canned beans? If you were cooking from dried beans, then you do rinse them and then soak in water for a couple of hours or overnight, then drain and rinse well. Then you cook the beans by covering with fresh water and bringing to a boil for 10 min.'s or so, scooping out foam and discarding. Then you put on simmer and cover and cook until the beans are tender. Never season until the beans are fully cooked or they will not get soft. Then you add your other ingredients to the pot of cooked beans (do not drain). Add sauteed onions/garlic and whatever else you like, maybe celery & carrots. And whatever spices you like. Then you can blend up 1/2 of it and put back in pot to make creamy. This all takes longer than out of the can. Out of the can is great like you are making. I like to get seasoned black beans and use a can of garlic/oregano/basil tomatoes.
I love that story, thanks for sharing. My mom also serves with some diced onion and LOTS of cilantro :)
The raw onion on the side sounds awesome!
What does the vinegar bring to the flavor and the same with the olive oil? I would love to take a leap and try it
I am from Tampa and here I learned to substitute vermouth or a shot of dry sherry for the vinegar. It adds something special to it.
@Tim Merrill - What kind of vinegar did your mother add to the soup - red wine or apple cider?
Black beans and avocados are a match made in heaven
Soooo True! My mom makes a meal of them with some salsa and a few chips.
And cilantro!

Exactly. And I have the same cutting board. Check out our recipes and reviews.
I don't know if this is a Honduran thing, but my grandma cooks bacon in the pot, then heats the onions with that oil. Then comes the black beans and stock, it never gets pulsed. After simmering she adds an egg for each person and then serves the black bean soup.
Bacon makes everything better. I use bacon as well
Love seeing a vegetarian meal! My mouth was watering and now I need to make additions to my shopping list...
Bean soup is sooo good! We add protein to it, either eggs or usually pork ribs, so good!
There is a lot to be said for a chef willing to share their comfort food recipes. I love this ❤️ can't wait to try
I’m half Romanian, half Hungarian and we top our bean soups with homemade finely shredded fresh horseradish root that’s kept in vinegar/water and salt solution. Even my kids prefer it this way, tangy!
Love that!
Sending love from Massachusetts! Love all of your recipies and I so admire your clean bright kitchen and no nonsense approach! Black bean soup is my favorite so I can't wait to make this and i will probably add tomatoes, tumeric and some black pepper for health. Thank you!
I love that the Dutch oven is purple. Fits right in to the decor 😀 I'm gonna have to get one now 🤫
I have a pink one
btw love it when you refer back to your Mum's cooking, how she must have inspired you as a young lad...xx
Nice! I hope you enjoy!
I just made this bean soup tonight, and it was AMAZING! Thank you! 👏
I just made this today! This is a total HIT delicioso!!! Adding the lime juice made a big difference in flavor!!! Yum!!!
Looks delicious, I will definitely try this recipe, thank you ❤
Made this, earlier today and came out really good. The lime is a game-changer! This recipe just become my go-to black bean soup recipe
I made this Amazing soup for lunch today!!! So delicious, quick, easy!! And my heritage is Scandinavian…no vinegar or olive oil to finish a dish.😊
Yeah! I'm gonna make this for my weekend for myself! And I do drizzle most of my soups with olive oil right before serving 😋
❤love this! You make every recipe seems so easy and inviting😃👍🏾
Thanks so much 😊 Hope you enjoy!
I am from Colombia and we make diferent kinds of beans, white, green ,black, red. They are delicious!!
I make white beans with pork rack, delicioso, espectacular!!
Make the soup 3 times already. Absolutely delicious.
Thank you very much! I make mine without the lime (now I will try it) and with a couple of pieces of rendered bacon and some minced bell pepper.
I make this every other week, I love it so much. Thanks, John.
love how you were all over the place with your words and forming sentences in this one hahaha you are so funny and endearing to watch
That purple/violet pot is gorgeous.
Best soup ever! And I had no cumin! Thank you! I Sautéed veggies then 10 minutes in the IP.
I like to finish this soup with red wine vinegar, chopped sweet onions, and a dollop of sour cream. I love your channel!
🇺🇸 minutes. Yum yum. Try it.
This is the best black bean soup that I ever encountered. It becomes our ultimate soup Thank you John for sharing!
Made this for my husband and he loved it❤
Perfect wintertime meal! Lovely! 🤗👌
Greetings from France. Thank you for the recipe. I'm a fan of beans but have never tried black beans. I will now. Cheers
I have a feeling this is going to become a go-to recipe for me! Looks so good! 🤤❤
Hope you enjoy!! It's so easy and tasty!
It is in our house, we love Cuban black bean soup with fresh made bread
When I lived in Hawaii, my husband and I had Portuguese bean soup at a place called the Spindrifter, I think; out at the Kahala Mall. It was excellent. I've often thought about it and wished I had asked the Chef for the recipe.
I found some black beans last night and was just wondering “what should I do with it?”. You must be reading my mind! Thank you so much!! 😘🙏🏻🙏🏻
Yum, just made this for tonight’s dinner and it is so delicious I may have it for lunch. Thank you
I ❤ beans🥰 I like to add beans in different dishes; especially soups.
Thank you!
Was it good or no?? (You said "though" like it wasn't...)

I added red bell pepper the first time - good choice. This time I’m adding one and I’m also adding a jalapeño
Made it today. Worked very well and reminiscient of the soups we had in Colombia and Costa Rica. Thank you John❤
I just made this soup while watching and oh my……. It’s delicious. Thank you. Love every recipe I tried of yours.❤❤❤❤❤❤
I still make this soup. Still loving it!
This looks great and simple to make. I make one very similar, just adding slices of a good sausage or kiolbassa and some crushed tomatoes.
I love black beans in anything 😍
