- Kick-start a healthy new year with Jamie’s spicy and colourful Black Bean Soup recipe inspired by his recent travels to Costa Rica. Black beans have the highest protein content so not only is this dish delicious it’s good for you too. The chilli and herbs add a beautiful depth of flavour while the eggs softly poached in the soup add a creaminess and a vibrant colour. Serve with a fresh salsa and tortillas. Filling, tasty and full of sunshine.

I'm from Costa Rica and watched all the video with a smile on my face! TRUST ME GUYS, the eggs give it a special touch. - In my family we boiled them a little more -
4:00
I read people complaining about eggs in the soup. Jamie made something different pouching the eggs, in Costa Rica we boiled the eggs before, peel them and/or put those eggs in the soup. If you dont like eggs (cuz you dont or you are vegan) just dont use eggs.
You can eat the soup with rice, its delicious or use bread/salty crackers if you dont have tortilla. Ah, and the chilli is optional too.
+Ruben Amador It's a difficult concept for people to understand... They seem to think recipes are rigid and cannot be changed, then get upset by that. Just don't use the fucking egg. Not difficult.
+Jimmy Watson one of the best youtube comments of all time. And infinitely generalisable.
Some people don't like chicken menstruation.
+Yohana Genova menstruation is nature
Not entirely true fellow costarican, this is the way we cook them as well here in the South, and apparently in the north too
Made this in 15 min and was in love with every bite! Full of energy now. Perfect student food! You're a boss, Jamie Oliver!
bloody hell u can cook fast
I just simply Love Jamie
he's just amazing
he's a free spirit, have a big heart positive vibes and full of love and fun
It's great to see our traditional food for all people. Thanks Jamie!! ☺️😏
+Milena Bermúdez Thank YOU for a beautiful dish!
I love this dish! I have made it several times. For the salsa, I add a ripe tomato for added flavor.
Rough chop, thunder along......love, love, love his enthusiasm! Great recipes!!
This recipe is the bomb! I make it almost every time someone comes over for lunch/dinner, and it's such a big hit!
This is my go to recipe for black bean soup for the past 5 years and it is always a hit 👍🏻!
This was awesome! The poached egg was an incredible addition and it tasted incredibly creamy. I had never even poached an egg before and it came out great.
I watched this vid and couldnt quit thinking about it. Several hours later I stopped at the market to get what ingreidients I could remember and added to the ones I already had at home. OMG. The best soup Ive ever had!
Mmmmm this looks great, a good winter warmer! We love homemade soup!
I ❤️ it when he says little swig and then empties one-fourth of the bottle
You rock Jamie! It makes me so proud to be Costa Rican and see one of the classic soups my mom made when I was a kid now made by you with a Jamie Oliver twist 👍🏻I love the way you cook! Thanks for putting Costa Rican food on the map 😉
+Natalia trejos Thank you for an amazing dish and a lovely comment!
I'm Costa Rican 🇨🇷 love this soup 🍲 GREAT job Jamie looks delicious!!! Pura Vida ✌
Just made this for me and my flatemate, and it was a huge HIT! Perfect for a cold winters night. What a winner, full of flavour and nutrition.
Just made this and eating it right now- eggs and salsa and all. Delicious! Very hearty and nourishing.
Hi 🙂 ! Great Chef 😋. The frosting on your Black Bean Soup Recipe is the Warm Tortillas. TYFS!!!!👍👍
Wow.. That made my mouth water, didn't expect that to happen right after dinner!
I made this for dinner yesterday and surprisingly it came out great! The egg was a nice twist that added additional flavour combined with the herbs and peppers. Def fav!
Maravilloso. Saludos desde Costa Rica. Adoro la sopa negra :)
This soup looks amazing! Salvadorans also make a wicked bean soup. Our version is similar - minus the celery and thyme - but add beef bones and stock to add richness and depth to the soup. It’s served with rice, feta cheese, a drizzle of cream and chilli. There are loads of variations which proves how easy and versatile this soup is.
Hell yeah!! Costa rican recipe. I'm so proud of this..
Just cooked this along with you Jamie - it's just the type of meal I need to start the year healthily
+squirrelchicklet Fantastic! Heres to a happy Healthy New Year! :D
I tried this today although I can't cook but this came out really delicious, I love it so much!!!
+suzan kasaby That's awesome to read! Well done you and happy eating!
as a costa rican, i approve this
+Charlie.
Just love watching & listening to you J.O., so much inspiration!😍👍🏼
I've made this heaps of times (though I don't use eggs) and it's so bloody good. So comforting and healthy!
I made this soup yesterday, and the combination with the spicy salsa was amazing! Wow!
I love that Costa Rica was finally featured! We have amazing food here, and i would love to see your take on Chifrijo or Pinto :D Awesome!
I can always count on your recipes Jamie! Thank you 😊
I've made this so many times I just love it!
Thanks for your stop by in our country and inspire a recipe from our cuisine.
Cheers from Costa Rica! Pura vida!
+Ricardo C. Thank you and your country for an amazing dish! So inspired.

😉☺☺😉😗😗😗😘😘🤪😝😝😏🤫🤫🤫😛😛😛😛🤫🤫🤫🤭🤭😏😶🤭🤫🤭🤪🤪🤪🤔😜🤔🤔🤔
Can't eat coriander (sadly), but replaced it with celery leaves, and it still tasted absolutely amazing. The egg is such an amazing addition, I might start adding it to other soups I make!
As Costarican I am very proud that a famous Chef such as Jamie Oliver apreciate this tradicional recipe, I just can say thanks!
+Jorge Rojas Thank YOU for a fantastic recipe!
Pura Vida Jamie! In Costa Rica we love you! Come to Puntarenas next time
This recipe will bring my hubby back to life. 😂😂😂
I never EVER throw away my stalks. They're the best part.
Pura Vida de Costa Rica. Thank you Jamie 🤙🇨🇷
that egg is perfection! the flavours are incredible and the health benefits of the ingredients are off the chain!! :)
Oh my goodness, imagine coming home from a hard day of work and having some of that??... Mmmm, what hard day?..
As a Costarican this is an everyday meal for me but it's super awesome seeing other people appreciate this very simple dish
+Nahima1995 Your food is beautiful! Thank you for inspiring us!
It's really good, I made it like 5 times already, not getting enough of it :))
I’ve made this before with canned black beans and thought the recipe was okay but tonight i made with dried soaked black beans in the pressure - Devine!!!
I made this at home and omg it's so delicious. Doesn't call for any rare or fancy ingredients so even better!
Beautiful dish I am so impressed and hungry 😋 I love the colors and the difference of flavors that that dish could possess and the amount of spice and heat also the tang from the lemon exquisite and the heartiness from the black beans it sounds perfect 👌 I want to try it myself thank you for being a great chef.... Props 🏆
+Jessica Konkel Thank you for a lovely comment x
First time I see all my fav. ingredients in one recipe 😘🍜 The tortillas will taste better if they' re toasted rather than grilled or heated up in a micro.
This looks so good! LOVE the egg poached in the soup idea!
La mejor sopa de Costa Rica!!!!! "Sopa Negra"
YUM! This is one of our family favorites! I have a bit of a variation. I just love making a big pot of black bean soup with a ham bone. I also add cumin and a baked sweet potato which I puree into half of the soup. I will have to try the egg sometime. :) We have been using avocado, greek yogurt, cilantro, tomatoes and lime juice on top. :)
+Rainbow Gardens WOWZAS that sounds incredible. Will be giving that a go for sure!
Please be kind enoufh to tell me how long does it need to be let to simmer after it's been hard boiled? I'm dying to try this recipe. Begging you!
can i have your recipe please u love sweet potatoe and avocado
Rainbow Gardens, I just discovered your comment if its not to late could you tell me how much cumin to use? and how many sweet baked potato and what flavor greek yogurt and cilantro did you use?
Black beans Shakshouka looks amazing and most likely tastes like this, *if* you have top quality eggs
Finally it's the weekend, I've been waiting all week to cook this. I'm making this today woohoo. Thanks for the amazing recipe Jamie!
This is absolutely beautiful..... it's one of the quickest and tastiest soups I've made......
1:42 That's right! Throw that shit on the floor, just like at home xD

great recipe Jaime ... I'm really happy that you made a version of the black bean soup
So wonderfully delicious! Beyond words!! Thanks Jamie!!!
Totally a vegan dish without the egg. Will make it for sure 👌🏽
+Bhavana Gala Spot on!
I stopped watching when he put the eggs in. Eggs in soup?? And I am vegan
@@lyndakirkness5415 Of course you are, your half a brain would explode if you didnt say it like you probably say in every single conversation you probably have.
how do you know some one is vegan DONT worry they gonna tell you
@@lyndakirkness5415 Don't put the egg in...simple huh?
This looks so good! Making this tonight for sure.
TheLeanMachines bullshit

Make it again, it’s been 4 years! Lol!!
looks pretty simple to make and not many insane and/or expensive ingredients. awesome
Made this tonight, turned out amazing. Thanks Jamie!
making this right now :) so excited to sit down and eat
+David Major Enjoy! Hope it goes well and do share a pic of the result on social with @JamiesFoodTube!
+Jamie Oliver you ever ate injera eritrean/ethiopian food?
I'd make this minus the egg. Egg turned my tummy!
+5starrater1 This stage is optional so twist it up to suit your tastebuds!
I did this soup today and AMAZING! The family loved it ❤
Just made this, it was absolutely delicious!! Thank you so much for this recipe!
I like how he doesn’t prep his ingredients and just prepares them as he goes. Looks delicious and easy
Made this without the egg, so delicious.
+Ash D Perfect! Twist it up to suit your tastebuds and enjoy it even more!
Love all your cooking chef
Jamie, you're so passionate about what you do and it's so lovely to watch! :)
Am I the only one who doesn't mind the egg?? In fact I think that's the most beautiful yolk I've ever seen haha
corgisbutt the fact that it was orange instead of yucky yellow proves how healthy that chicken is or was... it could have been eaten by now. I wonder where he gets his eggs from.
Actually en Costa Rica the egg is fully cooked not that soft
I've poached eggs in my black bean soup before, but only bc I was broke & that was the only food I had to cook. I didn't know it was a thing lol :D
idk why everyone hates the egg, I think it's amazing
+Plumokin Egsactly.
I'm from Costa Rica and in here a black soup with no egg isn't a black soup XD.
+Plumokin I'm from Costa Rica and normally we use hard boiled eggs instead.
+Jennifer Brown Tica over here too, but I'd go for the poached egg over a hard boiled one any day. That runny yolk OMG. :Q
waaaaa "Sopa Negra" from my beautiful country thank you so much +JamieOliver many kisses from Costa Rica
+Kate Von Fl Your country is truly beautiful! Thank you for teaching us incredible dishes!
Thank you!
That was so good.
Salsa reminded me of Mexico.
he's got that post new years eve party hair going on
+Annie Haha!
That looked amazing😋I love black beans with fresh salsa and hand made tortillas❤️
This is one of my favorite recipes to cook. It's one to always go back to when in need of a safe card, that you know is going to deliver. Especially on cold days, this soup is so hearty and warming.
I have to point out though, that black beans are Not the beans with the highest protein content. Of course soy beans are highest, but also other beans have more. They are a stunning source of anti-oxidants,, though!
Pura vida!
However this still looks fantastic, will probably make it. Without eggs.
+Whatever Go for it! The beauty of a recipe is that you can just use it as a guide and twist it up to your own tastebuds!
He is such a great chef!
Thanks Jaime, years trying to make your food, I am originally from Nicoya ( the blue zone), very glad you are making ours food.
Hi! I'm from Costa Rica. We normally use hard boiled eggs (they are cooked with the beans)
+Jennifer Brown It works just as well! :D
It can be done both ways! I am costarican!!!
This looks amazing WITH the eggs.
+Mike Rotchburns just you wait until you've tried it!
I love beans but love it even more, when food I grew up eating gets discovered by other countries x
Amazing ! Will cook this tonight as I have all the ingredients just waiting for this recipe ! Your enthusiasm is so great during lockdown. Thanks so much.
I've never tried the eggs in there before. It looks weird but it's probably really good. Adds a richness.
+mpenny226 It really does. As the egg oozes into that delicious Bean Soup, it takes it up a whole new level.
Whilst I am usually not a fan of this Jabroni, this soup looks good.
You are my food sensei man,all your receipes have been awesome.i thank you for been as simple and clear as posible. My first attempt was somewhat crazy during cooking but it tasted great although i think i can cook it better.Ill give it a new try next week, cheers.
This is so good, (eating it right now). This is definitely going into my regular winter meal rotation.
Minus eggs this will be amaze balls, going to top it with some guac too!
+Marina Ruy Barbosa you are beautiful
+spartan99947 Dudes are beautiful too yes.
You are beautiful
B Wong I believe she's vegan so she just choice to leave it out instead of complaining which is actually very nice of her:)
Yes!
the way he cut his bell peppers...LMAO
great soup though for sure
Thanks you, Jamie OLIVEr. I've got plenty of those black beans cans since the beginning of the COVID quarantine.
made this tonight....love it...
minus the eggs bt rest is amazing😛😛😛
minus the egg.....lush
+daystate12345678 Go for it!
Made it for lunch today and served it with tortilla minus the eggs and the chilli coriander salsa garnish. It was so delicious. Definitely going to make this again. The only thing I did a little differently is that I simmered it on low for nearly an hour instead of hard boiling it for 10 mins.
Making that tonight!!! looks really good Jamie!
