In my younger days, I drove an International dumptruck with the exact same engine and transmission. I always loved running through town at 6AM in low range and wound up tight. Probably woke up half of the town!
We too still enjoy the times we rode with our dad. I started when I was 4yrs old in an ‘64 IH Emeryville, he hauled cattle and did flatbeds. The best is watching him shift to keep you on pins and needles as he drove those old 2-lane highways back then. In the new system, we’ll see our loved ones again and rejoice over our great times. Bill
My dad drove a '67 KW with a 318 in it. First semi he ever drove. He was working for a drywall company and it was a truck his boss bought. My dad learned to drive truck in that truck. Brings back memories.
Thank you Mark, my brother and I were mentioning that it would be nice to make a video pulling my SS Fruehauf van trailer. When we brought the trailer home a few years back I didnt have a camera with me, but the ol girl sounded real sweet pulling a few hills. This KW is all original except for the exterior paint and where I replaced the chrome with stainless. It was a great find! Bill
Memories on Mack 1942 truck same loud ,just im close my eyes and reasy see it my dad agen ,😢😢 his gone on 2011 ,thanks you guys for this beautiful video
My dad drove these trucks from the early 60's onward for about 30 years. I can't believe how hard they worked back in the day! I grew up around truckers during this time. They were real men!
Now that is truckin with a 13 speed fuller and a great screaming Detroit. The clutch is just for first and reverse. I drove thousands of miles here in Canada in a White Freightliner with v12-71 awesome.
Now THAT is how you shift a 13 speed, my favorite transmission! Total respect for a driver that can make a clutch and transmission last. I watched a video of some guy grinding about 2 lbs of filings into his transmission in about 10 minutes ON A HIGHWAY dealing with some normal hills with an empty trailer. BTW he had a 12V 71. If I was 'test driving' that guy he would have never got the job on my watch.
@TheAmazingMikey - I have fallen asleep many times in my Dad's trucks listening to him shifting on the road, I swear my brother has the same gift as my dad when it comes to shifting and driving a truck, brings back those all those memorys of when I was a kid riding with dad, long before my brother was born.
I guess I could only dream of driving one of these trucks. I've been driving for just under a year and still haven't seen or heard one of these in person. This is one beautiful truck man. Hopefully one day I'll see it somewhere!
You sure won't sneak up on anyone in that thing, but it's definitely a thing of beauty... I'm an owner op right now with 31 years in and still trucking everyday!
I went to work for a farmer who had an old dump truck with the 6V71 engine. Used only to haul cull potatoes one mile to the back of the farm to dump. I was 54 but had ever driven that kind of truck or 13 speed transmission. Challenge excepted. One day the dirt road was packed and with the truck empty I got that thing up to 10th gear. One day I was busy else wear and the new guy drove the truck. Sure enough he pulled out the PTO engagement cable just like I told him not to. I had to drop the transmission mounted power take off to get the cable reattached. The owner peered under the truck to see what was taking so long and offered to help. He saw me up to my elbows covered in 50 year old transmission oil. He told me I was doing a great job and hurried off to find something else to do. In my day I drove everything from a three cylinder two stroke motorcycle, 6 cyl diesel farm tractors, D6 Cat dozier. throttles on 30,000 hp steam turbine powered US Navy destroyer (1944 model Reserve training ship) and that dump truck. Never got to fly an airplane.
I've been driving for 26 years and something the new generation knows nothing about is that this truck has spring suspension,no power steering,no ac and no air ride cab. That's when trucking was trucking.
I started driving in 2007, with my permit, in an old Ford LTL9000. It had spring suspension, no A/C, no air-ride cab and beat the crap out of you. I enjoyed every mile. I don't really care for air-ride cabs. Especially on a day cab.....they bounce too much and nose dive when the shocks get worn.
I am 13 born 2002 I know about them it is a 318 detroit naturally asperated 2 stroke diesel engine also know as a screaming jimmy these engines are bad ass
James Bodie i thought of going into long haul, but respect those who roll the big boys, I'm the who stayed back from the stop strip at traffic signals, I just. it's called respect.
@smacdiesel Agreed - most truckers today couldn't begin to handle the 22" muscle wheel grossing 72+ on an old 2 lane blacktop road hauling a loaded possium belly of cattle. My dad used to have to sit me on the dog house of an 64 Emeryville for he was afraid I would go sailing out the window bouncing around a curve at 60MPH, while he is standing on the floor board pulling that wheel around the curve. I loved to watch my dad drive and now my brother, he has the same gift of a real trucker!
I feel for your dad, I lost power steering twice in loaded 3 axle concrete mixers (once belts, once power steering hose) and trust me between a full load and sow tires it was one hell of a workout both times. LOL
Mis Ner I owned a 1970 cabover 200 inch wheelbase KW with a V-12 Detroit and a Spicer 4X4 transmission. loved that truck wish I had it now. straight pipes it was loud!
A seasoned truck driver of 35 years told me: "To drive a 'Screamin' Jimmy' correctly, you need to slam your hand in the door first, then you drive it like you're mad at it." I had a good laugh. Even though I've never driven a 2-stroke diesel, I knew exactly what he was talking about.
I heard someone who used to drive truck say that you had to wind a Detroit up real high and then shift quick or something like that. Today's Detroit engines sound nothing like the classic Detroits did.
briank06261973 the old ones are two stroke supercharged. They can have turbochargers feeding the supercharger but they actually need the supercharger for airflow or the engine will not run. It produced that great sound.
@@roundsm18 That “super charger” is really only a scavenger pump. It is needed to blow out the exhaust and supply fresh air. The turbos are superchargers.
@@tracylemme1375 a turbocharger is exhaust driven with compressor and turbine sides, where as a supercharger is belt or gear driven - in this case it is a gear driven roots blower. You are correct that the supercharger exists because a two stroke diesel will not scavenge. From a maintenance standpoint there is a difference between turbochargers and superchargers. They are not interchangeable.
Thanks for the video. Just standin here thinkin ... There really is time travel cause a five minute video can have me on my dad's shoulders as a kid or rippin around with one of my older brothers as a teen and man for me it's heaven for a few minutes . Go ahead and get your digs in boys you should be so lucky to let your mind open once in awhile.
Nice smooth shiftin my man, got love that 13, i drive 18 now, really dont need split bottom, unless heavy heavy, like movin a 400, 138,000lbs, 23yrs and i still love it, cant wait get up go to work, lol..thanx.
@desert122 Thank you for the great comments, I do love my truck, and the good thing is it's mostly original, only paint and replaced the chrome with stainless where I could.
most drivers dont know to keep the rpm up on a detroit but you got it. there used to 4 cycle diesels and dont understand, run it like a friken chainsaw, and as far as gears, the more the marrier!
Those roadranger shift knobs were always a pain in the ass, always seemed the screws backed out and o rings fall out of place and the air pours out, think they changed in the late 80s I can't remember really but my drivers were most of the problems, figured they'd get to hang around the shop if they broke but I stocked the knobs and lines and fixed it in a skinny minute.
@DetroitDieselDoctor, That is amazing.Thank you for the information Detroit.Seriously I thought the Jake came out in the early 80s. That Detroit is my favorite, always has been,Also I see a comment about Armstrong steering,I drove Armstrong for about the fist 5 yearsof my 26 behind the wheel of tractor trailers.
I can't stop watching this and thinking about how much fun grandpa had when he drove all kinds of TRUCKS with Detroit Diesel 2 cycle engines back in the good ol' days. Trucks that were a challenge to drive and had a distinctive and unique sound. Now I am a 4th generation trucker in this family and I can say that I do not like my truck with a silent engine and an automated-manual- IT'S BORING as HELL freezing-up.....
In my younger days, I drove an International dumptruck with the exact same engine and transmission. I always loved running through town at 6AM in low range and wound up tight. Probably woke up half of the town!
WoW Yes. Thank you. Love that sound . My house shakes when i listen detroit diesel.
Every time I watch these videos with these Detroit's and puts a smile on my face it brings back so many fond memories of my driving career
Ever time I hear this I think bout daddy n heaven yall, wen I would ride as a little boy,I miss him

Beautiful peice of mechanical history 💯 gorgeous truck
My god I can listen to that Detroit talk all day!👌🏿
That was like listening to mozart.Took me back to the 70s when my father drove a KW K100,it had an 8V71 detroit and it was a beautiful.
My dad drove a '67 KW with a 318 in it. First semi he ever drove. He was working for a drywall company and it was a truck his boss bought. My dad learned to drive truck in that truck. Brings back memories.

Love that big ole white steering wheel too! This truck is a true Gem! WOW !
LOVE THE SOUND OF REAL POWER AND SOUND OF DETROITS AND JAKES!!!!!!

One of the loudest and most badass engine sounds ever for sure.
I remember this combo to be very popular in the late sixties. I love the distinct sound of Detroit’s they all have the same growl.
Regardless of number of cylinders or arrangements.
that a road ranger? that's what I learned on, 68 white 4000, 318...
beautiful truck and beautiful sound. thank you!
Now that is truckin with a 13 speed fuller and a great screaming Detroit.
The clutch is just for first and reverse. I drove thousands of miles here in Canada in a White Freightliner with v12-71 awesome.

I love how he has keep turning the steering wheel like 10 times. haha. I dont know much about big rigs, but that was sick !

It’s because that engine has two happy spots: idle and open.

33 years driving and counting. I try to explain this to Nubi drivers today and they look at me like a dear in the head lights.

Beautiful truck and great shifting. Can't imagine the hearing damage from this being your office for 12 hour days six days a week. Still super sweet!

thats damn sweet shifting, I guess its easy with a detroit diesel, it drops the revs very fast ?
Its realy a very nice truck combo you got there.
great sound !! i love the sound of an old-fashioned detroit diesel. Here in Mexico, you can still find lots of trucks with that kind of engine.
Long live the old Detroit Diesel V8!

Thank you for the great comments, I do love my truck, and the good thing is it's mostly original, only paint and replaced the chrome with stainless where I could.
Great looking truck. Awesome shifting.
Back when truck driving took skill keeping those 2 cycles on the power band was an art form and no radio you couldn't hear it anyway.
Glad to bring back good memories for you. I rode with my dad for years and always had fun riding these old trucks.
Very Very clean and rattle free truck, Love it.
