Great looking and very sweet 318 Detroit. Grew up in a 1970 cab over Peterbilt with the 318 and 13 speed. This brings back alot of early memories of riding in and driving the ole Peterbilt. Thanks for posting this video !!
I have full respect for all the 'ol timers who had to drive these in the day on the old secondary blacktop roads. She's had me standing on the floor board holding her going around a tight curve a few times. Thank you
Anytime I have a bad day and I'm feeling down, I turn this video on and I get moving with out a care in the world!! Thanks always make my day... something about that Jake brings me right up 😁
It's all done through the feel of the truck, when you get in harmony with your truck you don't need a clutch except for starting and stopping. Practice, Practice, Practice.
There will never be another sound like this again. That was trucking to the likes of no one outside of that era will ever understand. Again I say that was TRUCKING.
Thanks guys, first trailer I ever drove, 67 KW 318 w/10 spd. Sure didn't look that good OR sound that good ... especially after a 10 hour day ! Electronic motors, auto shift, cruise control, A/C, CD players ... and even air ride seats these kids today have no clue where we've been. LOL
Ah that distinct sound of a Detroit, I started my driving career in a 1970 KW XHood with a 8 V71 and a 5x4 what a truck. I often wonder if I could find another like her to restore and just have it to play with.
I'm a peterbilt man all the way but that's one prettiest kw I have ever seen. I drove a international once with a 318 with a blower it surprised the hell out of me
boy DD's werent much for power but they sure sounded good and if you kept em wound up you could go any where. This 318 sounds very well taken care of props to ya'll on a beautiful sounding power plant. i just rebuilt a 78 6V53T and she sounds really good just like yours
@imjustpassinthru You are so right, having a conversation was not in the manual when it comes to a screaming detroit, and driving it like you have slammed your hand in the door was another good 'ol expression
I have two 72 exhd 359 peterbilts one has the 8v92 silver with a 13 speed and the other has a 3408 v8 cat with the 13 speed they are both used on a daily basis and have given me no issues besides normal maintance
@bombardiersnowcat Interesting you ask, - Why it is a jake brake, we old timers called that lever the "Company Jake Brake" - we would wear out the trailer brakes before the tractor brakes.
This. This is the USA. All American parts, all American motor. The EPA killed these beasts, claiming too much pollution. What a crock. Thanks for sharing. Brings back memories!
The Stupid EPA needs to be disposed of, because they control how what types of Engines are allowed for use by the Civilian Class, but yet, they allow the Military, and other GOVERNMENT vehicles have whatever they want. Just a bonafide case of "DO ONLY AS WE THE GOVERNMENT SAY, AND LET WE THE GOVERNMENT DO WHATEVER WE WANT TO DO" !!!!!
Thanks for not beatin' the livin' snot out of her, triple D! Seen the truck at Walcott before, what a beauty. Like the period correct stuff on it...looks real nice!!
I LOVE the sound of a Detroit. I was going to put a 4-53 in my 1953 Dodge 1/2 ton. But ran out of money. I could either buy the Detroit & not fix up the truck or visa/versa. I sold the truck years ago. There was plenty of room under the hood of that 53 Dodge.
Why every ones always bashing detroits I grew up riding in these trucks sometimes sleeping with my knees on the floor and head on the seat sometimes shifting while my Dad dragged trucks out of toll booths you can buy a detroit fire truck or 12v71 and make all the horsepower ya want but these trucks were back in the day where low horses and shifting and having a sore back was the life of a trucker I think the 318 not cubic inches already ... and yes they didnt even have that many ponies 275? was the best sounding motor no aspiration no turbo...just revs and a hollowed out rikers and it was music..great truck and video thanx Detroit Doctor ! you apreciate the finer things in life bro...
Wow... hearing that Detroit sound is causing me to haveg flashbacks: It's winter of February or so of '73. Sittin' in a bronze colored 352 w/sleeper... night time... left Alma, AR early yesterday morn... now it's early AM... I'm workin' the mountains out in Pennsy somewhere (divided highway) headed for who knows where (can't remember)... I'm working that Fuller 13spd and that 318 is howling up a racket through the twin stacks. The class lights are reflecting on the underside of the chrome visor... I'm not listening to music on the radio or a tape in the deck... just sittin' there doin' my thing and listenin' to that Jimmy working hard beneath me and from the looks of this memoir, it's obvious my mind was recording it all as a memory. Detroit Diesel: Drove many of 'em. Tough old engines... make 'ya deaf, though!
My first truck was a '70 International cabover with a 318 Detroit and a 13 speed Roadranger. You had to drive those 318's (a V8 engine in case you kids didn't know that) "like you were mad at 'em." That was the old saying in those days. Not much sound insulation in the cabs back then. You had to yell to have a conversation.
@cdldrvr I'm a kid and have a '73 KW W900 with an 8V92 and a 15sp :D i know waht you guys went through and it was heaven it even has a 42inch flat top which i found out was the biggest sleeper you could get back than lol not to mention that i also have a 56 KW with a mechanical detroit and a 5-3 split :D
WOW nice truck i am getting a 1973 Dodge D900 with a 13 spd adn a 318 to fix up i hope to have it home in a week ot two hope it sounds and looks as good as your KW when I am done
Very few trucks with Detroit 2-strokes ran over here in the UK - more's the pity. Some Bedfords - mostly TM 4x2's and some Scammells. Love that sound. Tony, Derby, UK
No sure where you get your information buddy. The original engine in my truck is a 8V71 318 HP N65 injectors and my truck actually has a dual pyrometer, one probe for each bank, and the pyrometer installed in my truck has the old KW logo stamped smack dead center of the gauge. You can put a pyrometer on any engine if you want to.
Sahllem, the transmission in some of these trucks really only has 4 to 6 actual gear positions including reverse. The rest is done with the high and low selector knob you see on the side of the shifter stick and the red selector you see on the top left side of the shifter knob.As DDD said, it is a matter of getting a feel for the truck you drive and matching road speed with the engine RPM.This looks like a 13 speed. Most truck transmissions today are 9 and 10 speed with 6 actual shifter positions.
@StrassenbahnBenny You're so right; unfortunately there are very few of them left where I live. If I want to hear the scream of the 2 stroke I usually have to go to RUclips and watch videos of trucks with them. I've bookmarked a bunch of them in my favorites
Nothing like a Detroit 2stroke I remember my dad's old cabover had 8v92tta and he put almost 2million miles before overhaul went thru 2 clutches and a half gallon of oil everyday never let it fall below 1700rpm and I will say best sounding and running motor of all time
Holy cow! I forgot how noisy it was in those rigs. Now, is that 318 slightly similar to the Detroit Doge 318 of '68. I know it's all beefed up as a diesel. 800 plus hp. Still a great workhorse.
This Truck has the same sound from the "Green Goblin Truck" from the Film "Rhea M" Trucks out of control"! Or the Black Mack- Truck from "Rubber Duck" from the Film "CONVOI" has the same Motorsound, Motor in the Truck!!!
Its called floating gears you get the feel of your truck and engine and learn its sweet spot and then you will learn to float gears its actually second nature once you get the hang of it. I actually have a harder time trying to double clutch than I do floating gears but I have been floating gears over 20 years and probably getting close to the two million mile mark
This maestro is in sync with his symphony! Well done brother
Dang....one of the coolest dashboards I've seen in a truck. Kenworth did not want you getting bored inside while you were driving. very nice.
Great looking and very sweet 318 Detroit. Grew up in a 1970 cab over Peterbilt with the 318 and 13 speed. This brings back alot of early memories of riding in and driving the ole Peterbilt. Thanks for posting this video !!
This guy has got the touch. He is really in touch with his machine. It is like an orchestra. Bravo.
Great Sound ! Back in the day , no short-shorts , flip-flops or wrap-around cowboy hats .
Put well over a million miles behind a 318, no regrets, get goose bumps whenever I hear one. Music to my ears.
Wayne Wilkie how long did it take to put 1 million miles one one?

Superb! 4 and 4 in my ‘67. You do love a Detroit! Salute!🏴☠️
I never get tired of watching your videos... thank you for sharing with us.
A 1967 Kenworth , Detroit 8v71 with a beautiful interior ! It doesn't get any better than that ! 👍🏻
Thank you. All original period correct. Some gauges were replaced and drivers’s seat cover.
It's called "floating" and it's how I learned.
There will never be another sound like this again. That was trucking to the likes of no one outside of that era will ever understand. Again I say that was TRUCKING.
Right on Richard and the real men that used to operate em!!
Richard Cates well said times are changing so much compared to when I was a kid in the 1970's. Love sound of the engine brake in this clip.
Reminds me of my daddy in heaven.i remember them many rides.Daddy I miss u
That was a real truck back in the days with the right combinations
Jammin' gears has got to be a fever, cause men become addicted to the grind.... Love the sound of an old Detroit Diesel. Great job and great video!
You just can't beat that awesome sound. Quite literally nothing sounds better than a screamin' detroit.
Screamin' Jimmy!
LOL

God Bless you Buddy. Your Dad is a great man & he taught you well. Detroit Power 4-Ever!!!!!!!!
he is shifting much too quickly , no reason for that at all
I own a Atkison with a 8v71T 1976 after this video I’m in love with it even more.
The sound of the engine is exciting and the shift times are excellent. I enjoyed very much.
I'm a peterbilt man all the way but that's one prettiest kw I have ever seen. I drove a international once with a 318 with a blower it surprised the hell out of me
That " Under-Hood " was Beautiful AND immaculate .
😊 Thank you
boy DD's werent much for power but they sure sounded good and if you kept em wound up you could go any where. This 318 sounds very well taken care of props to ya'll on a beautiful sounding power plant. i just rebuilt a 78 6V53T and she sounds really good just like yours
Drove detroits for many years and miss them dearly..
What do you know about missing something
Super-Tuff old truck. Love the split shifts and jake music. Awesome, thanks for loading.
Love the sound the old Detroit's make, can't be beat.
Music to my ears! Awesome vid! Awesome sound!
@imjustpassinthru
You are so right, having a conversation was not in the manual when it comes to a screaming detroit, and driving it like you have slammed your hand in the door was another good 'ol expression
It has the looks and the sound....Oh Yeah! 🤩😎 Love the old rigs! 🥰
Now that's a classy truck and it sounds like a real truck should!
Como ronrronea como un gatito que fantastico
LOVE IT! THAT SOUND! I have a 69 Pete 359 with a 318.... I can't get enough of that sound. Thanks
I have two 72 exhd 359 peterbilts one has the 8v92 silver with a 13 speed and the other has a 3408 v8 cat with the 13 speed they are both used on a daily basis and have given me no issues besides normal maintance
Just beautiful, love the oldtimers, they don't make em with passion anymore
Good old American iron! They don't make em like that anymore, but we still make em better than anyone else.
Way. To. Go
That is one well running Detroit ..I don't hear any valve train noise .. it's tight it's clean & crisp ... Wow nice very nice .
No valve train noise? Isn't this a 2 stroke? I thought 2 stroke engines had no valves.
@@paulk9985
They have exhaust valves, ports in the cylinder liners
@bombardiersnowcat
Interesting you ask, - Why it is a jake brake, we old timers called that lever the "Company Jake Brake" - we would wear out the trailer brakes before the tractor brakes.
This cat driving this truck has been through the box a few times💯👊☝💪
What a beautiful rig this brought tears to my eyes my father use to sit me on his legs and let me steer
Brings back memories of when i started out years ago Thanks

the best KW/Detroit, and driver, this guy knows how to shift ,and drive Kudos
Beautiful truck . Must be a joy to drive on long trips 😊
@chec2002 - It has both. The heater control is on the dash and the a/c is roof mounted and both work great.
Thank you for the kind comments. That's awesome... will have to use that title more often "Shiftingman."
beautiful truck with a GREAT sound!! 5 stars and 10 thumbs up!
@chec2002 It has the roof mount Kyser AC unit, still blows cold air while it gives you a bath going around a curve, thanks for asking
Thanks for not beatin' the livin' snot out of her, triple D! Seen the truck at Walcott before, what a beauty. Like the period correct stuff on it...looks real nice!!
Loved part 1 ...and 2 ...... She's a Diamond T ain't she 👍
I can just imagine how she would growl and snort when she was loaded up 👍
Thanx a bunch, brings back lotsa memories. Like to hear'er with a good load in the hills.
wow. i'm truly impressed. i'm in school for advanced truck driving. ur making the shifting seem so easy.
318 with Jake's and no muffler......I love the way it sounds

i have finally found a truck I really want.
Thanks for this absolutely great video.. well the sound is all I wanted to hear and you got it in spades.
My first truck was a '70 International cabover with a 318 Detroit and a 13 speed Roadranger. You had to drive those 318's (a V8 engine in case you kids didn't know that) "like you were mad at 'em." lol nothing like them old school truck bro, that truck sound sweet...lol
would love to see more of the inside and out of your truck
I would buy one of these for pleasure use.
The 318 hp Detroit , also known as the 8V-71, was a 9.3 liter engine, which figures out to 568 cubic inches.
Very few trucks with Detroit 2-strokes ran over here in the UK - more's the pity. Some Bedfords - mostly TM 4x2's and some Scammells. Love that sound.

I can´t believe this Motorsound ? What this? It´s the noise from a Racecar!
No. Just a little ol' double-breasted Yammyhaw.
Thank you for the kind comments. Sorry to say, but it's "Priceless"
Nice early A model. Great work on the dash.
What a very beautiful truck , keep up the videos my new friend ;-)
Just came across this by accident. This seems like the Ferarri of semi tractors. Im not a trucker so probably a stupid comment. But shes a beauty.
@DetroitDieselDoctor Man that truck is beautiful. Nothing like the sound of an angry detroit with someone who can shift gear's like a pro!
He shifts her smooth as butter. Beteeen the splitter and the hi/low, he's got her mastered then teases us with the Jake's.
Detroit porn !
@nwow2866
I love them too, but hard to find good tires for them these day. Thank you for the nice comment.
