Just a quick little video of me driving my new project around , only the 3rd or 4th time ever driving a semi . Nothin like the view from a cab over !
Jesus do people no understand when he said hes only driven it a couple times? Beautiful truck man keep it up!
For a brand new driver he did just fine. You can't start as an expert. Remember where you came from and lend some much needed advice as opposed to useless criticism. Stay safe everybody.
Who else just thinks "terminator" when they see this truck!?
did you get your cdl at k-mart?!
To all the people making remarkes of him grinding the gears, he admitted he didn't know how to. Take my advice, if you don't like his shifting or think he's an idiot, then DON'T WATCH THE VIDEO. IF YOU GOT NOTHING GOOD TO SAY DON'T SAY IT AT ALL.
If you can't find em grind em and most truck's today are automatic so all these trucks are going to be a thing of the past
The Kodiak 77 every one grinds gears no one hits them perfect every time.
@@Aaronhouston33 True, I can just think how it would been if it were a double stick.
WELL I'VE GOT SOMETHING TO SAY!!! When our Model T transmission started grinding, we'd just fill the transmission full of sawdust, and it was all quiet...... So There, Ha! You heard it here first from the World's Foremost Armchair Authority on Sawdust!
🤣😂
Tim Morris whar did EATON FULLER think of that?
all the complaints... he said quite clearly he had only shifted the 13 speed 3 times before making this vid. then he said several times during the vid he didnt know what he was doing. It's quite obvious he's not even a licensed driver. I think he bought this truck to restore or something. No one has commented yet that he pushed the red knob in with the yellow one... He IS NOT PULLING A TRAILER!!!
You are no truck driver.. Make another video when you learn how to shift a thirteen speed.. You are saying how to shift this trans and doing it wrong by downshifting the splitter then shifting the trans.. Like at 6:53 when you do all the grinding. When you downshift the splitter then take the shifter out of gear to upshift, the whole trans is in neutral.. This is why you are grinding the gears.. Like when you down shift while not using the clutch, you need to bring up the RPMs to make the shift.. Well when you pull the splitter back into direct then shift the stick everything is in neutral and the air shift forks on the splitter is also grinding trying to downshift.. This is one reason the forks on the splitter get worn out from trying to make a shift that is not matched in RPMs.. The right way to shift is to make your upshift with the stick then pull the splitter back from OD to direct.. With some practice you will learn how to shift a thirteen speed.. Work on it.. I am 67 years old and have held a CDL since before they were called a CDL.. I was 18 when I got my Michigan chauffeur license.. My Father taught me how to shift without the clutch when I was bout ten or so on one of our farm tractors..
Bob tailing, start in 4th, skip to 6th, skip to 10th, then to twelfth and hit your splitter into 13th. Hitting all your gears is a waste of time unless your going uphill loaded.
Cameron Turner yup man I miss driving these old cab overs. Rubber blocks instead of airbags
@@Aaronhouston33 I've got to drive a crane with hendrickson rubber blocks in the morning. That's better than one of our other cranes that has a rigid walking beam, no blocks, no springs, nothing. Can only go about 45mph on good smooth roads.
I love the look of the old K100's.
Such a beautiful truck. If I were a truck driver; owning one-in any shape it came [they're all nice, that '79-83ish shape anyway], would be something I'd aim for. Can't think of a more beautiful truck actually.
+Rocketassistedgoat I SO agree... the old "kwhoppers" were great rigs in their day, and in my opinion, STILL great rigs...
Cool video. Nice of you to share your learning process with everyone. We likes it much! Please ignore all the know it all "super trucker" ass wipes making comments. Please post a "I got it now" video. Keep it up! : )
was thinking the same, thanks for being Kind :)
Don't push the red knob in....your not hooked to a trailer!!!!
That Cat you've got in that truck is a jewel bud.
Why do u use all gears ? Cant you drive away in 5 high ? And than go 7 or 8 up ? Thats how we do in europe.
oh only thing, you dont drive that if Air pressure in both thanks are below 55psi, or else youll f up on the road,thTs why driving these big trucks takes skill, and you need to learn how this Airbrakes work
He needs to practice more on his shifting, and you need to practice on your English more, punctuation to be precise.
one good piece of advice, if you don't have a trailer attached, don't push the red knob in, you'll just lose air pressure.
that little gray button is not you next gear. it's an over drive button. in the high side you have a 5th 6th 7th 8th and these four have an overdrive. with an 18 you have overdrive in every gear. if you put out a video know what you talking about. better yet sell me the truck before you cause more damage
It's grey on an 18, red on a 13
If you are bobtail, why did you push in the red air button?
I thought the same thing
So much smack talk for the guy. He said its the third time driving a semi so cut him some slack. Jeeze.
Instead of shit-talking the guy, give him some pointers.
Schnot to true man that's the biggest problem these days nobody is willing to help the new guys learn things.
i was thinking that myself
we all must learn some how
he had to know that making a vid on driving a truck for the 3rd or 4th time was gonna bring out the Billy big riggers. come on people , he flat out admitted he didn't know what he was doing. think he did fine,he'll only get better.
Is was very painful to watch I use to drive my friends 18 speed international 9800i at 16 n I didn't grind gears like that
Then don’t watch it the. He said clearly in his video that he was just learning.
1:50 only the yellow air valve has to be pressed in the red valve is for your trailer. Your loosing air and beating up your air compressor just bob tailing around..
You mean the truck has 1,693,000😂😂😂 the odometer rolled over 😂😂😂😂😂
Yes it's a beautiful truck with that 3406 and 13 speed combo...love the double bunk just wish it was the raised roof version..that air breathe snorkel is very sexy too but ooh it's like everything in that truck had rattled loose from it's long long life I would spend a few thousand and take it to kenworth and let them tighten up and replace whatever needs replacing on the suspension new bags shock absorbers and I don't know if you can do this but I would have that steer axle put on air bags
I'm laughing at the hater comments. seriously I believe that some of you people are miserable
Grinding gears would justify a "head slap" from my dad when he was teaching me to drive trucks
I learned in a 79 Peterbilt CO with 13 speed and 400 Cummins. That brought back a few memories.
I love the 400 cummins as well as the 444 cummins
I love the 400 cummins as well as the 444 cummins
I purchased a 1984 International 9670 with a 13sp Eaton Fuller trans, Big Cam 3 400. I am 49 and have only drove one once, when I was 25 years younger and that was just a block to get fuel, didn't have a CDL yet, that would come much later. I look forward to making some money and memories with mine.
Welcome to trucking. As a new truck owner and driver, "floating" gears is a very bad habit to form. Always double clutch. It will save your drivetrain. Most guys that float gears don't own their own trucks or pay for parts, like clutches, main shafts, bearings etc. If it's a rental, then float to your hearts' content. But, in your own truck... Start in low, double clutch and never hit max revs; which on a 3406 is 1500 rpm. Sweet spot is between 1200-1400. Also, it is illegal to roll to a stop out of gear and you can be cited for violation. Always be in gear no matter what the circumstance. Cat 3406s can roll to a stop without sputtering from 8th on a 13-15 spd by my experience. Good luck!
Dead Eyes floating gears is the best way only puss double clutch
Dead Eyes I'M a diesel mechanic for a major sand and gravel company we run c15 with Eaton fuller 9 speeds all of our drivers float the tranny and we get quite a few hundred thousand miles out of our clutches all in all it up to how bad you beat your truck's
As the saying goes, "learn to walk before you run..." Grind it 'til you find it by floating is an expensive way to learn compound shifting in "your own" tractor. 21 years OTR super load hauling up to 300 tons, but what do I know...
true dat,bump dat clucth youngin
Dead Eyes
grind me off a pound while you're at it, slick!
Id give third gear about 50,000 before it starts popping out with this dude in the seat
Nice looking truck. Just curious why you released both breaks? Yellow is for tractor and the red is for trailer. And you were not hauling a trailer.
Paul Specht, I saw that also. ?????
You don't have to start in lo if you don't have a load on I mean that in a informative way not trying to be rude
Now you can go find John Conner
Vladimir H. T😂😂😂😂😂
That "switch on the side" is called a Splitter! Nice job floating the gears, it's the way it was meant to be driven....and remember, if you can't find em grind em!
600,000 miles on an '87, were you just driving it to church on Sundays the next state over?
TERMINATOR 2
Egzorcysta96 everytime I see that movie it hurts lol
Shifting is no secret, everybody can hear it. ;-) It must be realy work, to steer this truck ... when i see the steering wheel position. It´s one of the best "Ami"-trucks for europe. It´s compact like a european truck, and has the charme of an american truck, like engine sound ... and ... and ... shifting sound. ;-) It must be a special experience to drive such a truck. Best regards from Dresden, Germany. :-)
"technically" you dont have any idea what your talking about, or doing...first of all, the only parking brake you need to touch is the yellow one, unless your hooked to a combination. All you did was release the air you were trying to build and it popped back out. second of all, even if I was 110-120k lbs i wouldnt touch low. 1st gear is more than sufficent, sufficent enough you can still just idle out and not even touch the throttle until your all the way off the clutch. Theres more than enough torque, and as long as your smooth and easy about it, its not hard on it, or damaging if done right. The only time I'd use low is if i was really really heavy and had no choice but come to a complete stop on a REALLY steep and sharp incline, or if I was really really heavy, and in a place with soft ground I.E: log yards, mills, bed of wood chips...Those half gears on the high side are also for when your loaded heavy and even then only needed here and there except in hi gear rolling down the interstate. and you were going far to fast on that washed out road. Do some research, ask some seasoned drivers questions, ride with one then practice. Keep your foot off that clutch unless your taking off, anything more than that, your just wearing it out.
How in the hell did you do that?
You climbed into a cabover, with your phone in your hand, in 5 seconds. How?
Terminator 2 chase scene :D :D
That's why he bought it ..
Saw an ad, oh man, that's COOL!
Think it was a Freightliner
Can't find'em. Grind'em
i don't care what ANYBODY says! I WANT ONE OF THOSE!!
Hey friend. You had me cringing when you grinded the gears. I'm a retired otr o/o. My truck also had a 13 speed in it. The trick to driving one is ....let the truck talk to you. You will soon be one with it. My truck was the best partner I ever had. Lol. Stay safe and keep it between the lines.
Old coinchaser im in a 1978 cabover GM detroit 2 stroke in australia. I had very little experience in road ranger box. They threw me in this because no one could drive it and were getting desperate to get it back to work. This is exactly how i describe it. I got in it and nailed it straight away. I feel like it does let me know whats going on and theres a connection there. People think im crazy and i probably am. But its working!!
drm1388 .... Right on. I firmly believe what I said in the other comment. People who don't believe it just doesn't understand it. Take care my friend. Keep it between the lines.
You don't have a trailer so you are losing air quick you should leave trailer brake set
Simple mistake
why did you push in the red button?
I was going to ask this same question.. I guess the hoses must have been hung up where it did not make a large air leak or the button would not have stayed in..
he just tryn to show all the green horns and late babys how this older stuff shifts....so try n be nice...seems like a purty good ol dude
why would you make a youtube video with a sucker stuck in your mouth?
Hey, who knows, that sucker might be a stand-in for the dip he quit. :) Gotta phase a habit out, somehow!
So he had a sucker in his mouth, big deal? Least there wasn't any up-close gross chewing or whatnot. :P
Don't push the red button in without a trailer.
everything takes practice you dont get it overnight. .my dad always taught me best way to learn is to get in it and keep doing it and you'll Lea rn it. takes time
Loved cab overs since terminator 2, im english and i have never seen a truck like that in real life. I would love to come to the states and look at all american cars and trucks, its a dream
There are some old Americans registered in the UK and EU
I’ll give you one piece of advice about a cabover never have anything loose in the sleeper when you tilt the cab up . What’s in the sleeper will come out through the windshield!!
WOW forgot the old lady was sleeping back there...
That sounds like the voice of experience talking. ;)
RobertKaydoo Ooooooooo yea I still remember vividly looking in the window of my k100 to see a tv laying on the newly smashed windshield.
Cool truck buddy I’ve got one myself don’t push the red knob on the dash unless your pulling a wagon if you do you are just blowing air out the red air line on the back but love the truck and you will figure it out
Cab mounts are beat out of it. I had two of those bombs, a pair of 85 K100s.Big Cam 4 350 Cummins /10speeds. And a 1986 Marmon COE Extra length Cab, 3406-B 400,twin turbo, 15speed Eaton Road Ranger, 3:55 Eaton rears. I had a small fleet of 3trucks and 6trailers hired on at George's Chicken. Got a lot of work out of those trucks.
doin' pretty good for a rookie bro..nice ol' truck..
Nice
Just fucking amazing..... UGH......
I have been in trucks over 40 years and I have never.... Good luck with that.
Brings back 500000 miles of memories. Drove cabovers many years. The vibration and rough ride, what a ride. Your knees are always 1st thing to arrive.
Thats a real truck. Wtf is this automatic shit
i hate the automatic
+Paul Smith idiots automatic makes it easier
If you still have this truck I'd love to buy it, skip the thumb switch unless you're loaded heavy, start in 4th empty with no trailer.
Nice chevy and International pick up's in the back ground. This KW is clean. Not many left out here in the Midwest salt roads.
you dont charge the trailer when there's no trailer...
I drove with 3406's for over 20 years...and I never ran her over 2,000RPM In Hi Rnge I topped her @ 1950 RPM
& never downshifted till I was around 1300...@1400 she ain't lugging. That has been the "Sweet Spot" with the
3406B for meLo Range I shifted up @ around 1600-1800.
ya ain't no trucker ya don't have to push in your trailer supply cause ya ain't go no trailer
Was wondering if I was the only one that noticed that!!! LOL
James Liebherr lol I saw that and was thinking if he engaged his trailor air supply that means wouldn't air be constantly leaking from the trailor airline connector in the back of the truck?? Thought that buzzing noise at first too was the low air pressure warning buzzer going off? Im not a trucker but I am a diesel technician and I at least know that much ha... grinding them gears too.
good looking k100. don't let all the know it all drivers get to you. if your gonna drive you gotta get some some seat time. they must of forgot that somewhere along the way...
That doesn't sound like a 3406. Sounds like a 3408, and if it is that that monster V8 kitty cat you're sitting on a gold mine. It could just be my phones audio, but it sure reminded me of the 3408 sound that grandpa had in his 362 Pete
Hears some thing to think about If you keep grinding those gears You'll get to replace that trans and they are not cheap.. Like I said before find an old driver to show you how its done
an amazing trip with your truck
the engin sound intersting
It's beautiful isn't it.
Put some chicken lights on it cause if you ain’t cluckin you ain’t truckin
Put some Boones Farm in the sleeper and tune in the TV set to 'Hee-Haw'......boo-ya!
They need to bring the snub nose back. Yeah, you don’t have the length regulations anymore, but god they’re so much easier to maneuver!
cool video bro, I miss my old international cab over, your video bright back memories of how bad the bumps really are inside a coe lol
We still make those K-Series cab over here in Australia up to this date , man we’ve got some amazing K-200 cab over , check companies like “Collins “ “Doolan’s” , Collins have a workshop just for detail cleaning they 90+++ Trucks .... they are absolutely immaculately, all Collins trucks looks like just came out of a showroom.... truck drivers put they name on waiting list at Kenworth Adelaide, South Australia just to purchase Collins trucks when he sells them because as I said they are like showroom condition even the ones from 90’s are spotless immaculately very metal is mirror polished, chassis totally clean they colour are “Olive green” but they have a few white and black even silver , but Collins are most olive green it’s pretty hard to top Collins on the K-series fleet , they love they Cab overs K-Series, best looking truck on the planet
My first assigned truck was a 1987 K100 it had a 400 Cummins and a 9 speed
If I ever hit the lotto I'm buying one of these then hittin 231 south from Huntsville, AL to PCB. You used to see a lot more of these on the road in the 90s. Looks like a real beast to tame.
Very nice road. I drove it many times with the Greyhound. I'm soon to switch to trucking.
Panama City Beach?
Grind them to find them😂😂😂
Love this truck - very nice!
LOVE HOW GUYS MAKE VIDEOS OF SHIFTING AND THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THERE TALKING ABOUT MAKES ME LAUGH SO HARD
Hes just having some fun you good for nothing dirt eating joker
Swift taught him that way
Youre an idiot. He said he'd only driven a couple of times
I knew there would be a bunch of pros on here telling you how to do it better lol. Your doing fine practice makes perfect
you don't need to push In the red botton when you are bobtail .. that is for trailer air supply
Every one has to start sum where awesome video man!
I've seen a worse shifting driver running his bosses farm Kenworth t800 with a loaded tipper trailer through town dont worry man
The American fears the clutch
Need to learn more cause you have no clue where your gears are at with that splitter!!
With no trailer why did you push in the trailer air(red)? Unless you had it capped off that should have made a major air leak
I was going to ask the same thing
It'll pop back out once the air pressure bleeds down if the gladhand isn't locked onto a holder.
I'm thinking you don't have a CDL or you used to drive for Swift.
I know you're trying to learn it, but you can probably get away with just using the high gears when there is no load being hauled. Diesel engines are torquey beasts and would probably have no problem without a load.
Engine, no problem. Clutch, wont be happy in the long term but yeah. Yur right
Maybe start in 3rd... When empty I start in high split 3rd in my truck then the next shift is low split 5th, then straight stick it. But it’s an 18’with 4:11’s. This is a highway truck so it
more than likely has taller rear gears. So 2nd or 3rd should be doable. If it feels like you’re riding the clutch, you are. Drop a gear. Doing good man, and badass cabover!!
I always start in fifth gear when im bob tail.
He’s making an “ instructional “ video. 😏
I had to sub, I'm a little obsessed with cabovers
You only push the red in if you have a trailer
I saw that and I was like wtf
Lol I seen that
John Wymer actually you don't know where 6th is
To start with I've been driving for 43 years.. When your not pulling a trailer you can start in 5th gear . then skip gears you don't have to use them all. next the transmission is called a 13 speed Roadranger . maybe ya ought to find an old hand to give ya some directions
Hi Daniel,A Roadranger/E.F.trans. going back a bit 10 or 13 speed still a good trans today. You just never here roadranger in todays time. Love it,old time truckers are still out here.KEEPING ON TRUCKING.
My dad taught me how to drive a 1982 freight liner when I was 12
13 speed
Tommy Gunn. No way my dad owns a 62 pete. We fixed it up
Dude,,learn how to down shift.
why are there no pptimus prime comments
Love those Cabovers, they are such beautiful Trucks hands down!!
omg your going to destroy that clutch
he was floating the gears
Love that 24" steering wheel...holy moly
dirtydan I’d definitely swapped that out for a car steering wheel 🤣🤣
I can't stop laughing lol. Clearly you're not a trucker. And that's ok. I love the video.
Back when trucking was trucking!
My first truck (Freightliner COE)had the 3406B in it. If I remember correctly it was turned up to 300hp. I don't remember how many gears.
Say you need more tape on that wheel.?
Why did you push both buttons in if your bobtailing .just asking
why would you release the trailer brakes when you have no trailer
Good question on that
Prolly just a habit
no a very smooth shifter.lots of grinding and jolting around. is that just the nature of the truck or are you inexperienced?
Very much inexperienced. If he knew what he was doing, he'd have left the yellow trailer air brake alone, shifted far faster and wouldn't have scratched a single gear, not even close. My dad was a trucker all his goddamn life, so I promise you, I ain't pullin' this outta my ass. Surely didn't need the Jake brake, either. I know it's been years since I've seen my dad drive truck (can't drive at all any more for many reasons), but boy I tell you I can still remember him shiftin' that T600 KW like it was nothin'. :) The man drove for ~30, 32 years from the time he was around 14-15 (lied about his age and experience; learned it all the hard way) til about the time he was.... I wanna say 46-47. Think he's 55 now, or about to be. He's a year older than mom, so I'd say that's fairly close.
Jäger Lovag yellows the tractor brake. reds trailer
he was floating the gears, and yes he should have been using the clutch when he stopped
If you cant find it, grind it.
Beautiful place man ... looks like the Adelaide Hills where I live .... good on ya , I drive a Western Star 2010 18 speed Eaton Fuller I float gears too .
