It is difficult to forecast how long it is going to take to Boeing to recover from these catastrophic events. One key factor though, is that Airbus alone cannot manufacture enough planes to satisfy the demand. I am guessing this is what saved Boeing from failing.

The noise aspect cannot be underestimated. Schiphol, KLM's base, has a very big noise problem. It's Europe's fourth busiest airport in terms of passenger numbers. More people fly via Schiphol than via Frankfurt. But the Netherlands is also one of the most densely populated countries in Europe (not _the_ most densely populated, not by a long shot, despite what some Dutch like to think).
The government has had a, shall we say, flexible approach towards the noise pollution from Schiphol, because money. But there's a lot of pressure, including court cases, to comply with environmental laws. So the plan was hatched to drastically reduce the number of flights. That's when the Americans chipped in, and told the Dutch in no uncertain terms that this would lead to them losing landing rights in the USA, on the oh so profitable transatlantic route.
    50% less noise is a no-brainer.

With the Air France-KLM Group 20% purchase of SAS Group - then it is logical as Air France and Scandinavian Airlines only use the Airbus A320 family in that size group.
I am quite sure that the A321neo LR/XLR will decentralize the flight routes especially between Western Europe and Eastern North America. The 737 MAX cannot compete in that market. If you are not on the bandwagon with the long skinny routes, you will lose customers. With the A320 family, it will also be easier to get certified pilots, etc. to the A350, as the Airbus planes have largely identical cockpits, apart from the old A300 and A310.
The alignment of the fleet is also found in the subsidiaries. Air France Hop, KLM Cityhopper and SAS Link, which only use Embraer E-Jet family aircrafts.

By 2 or 3 decades from now the 737 would turn 30 years on average, that is if they didn’t get the 737 MAX, with the youngest one delivered to KLM in December 2019 would be around 20 years of age. Of course they need a new plane and they need retirement by the next 5 years or maximum 1 decade only!! fuel efficiency would degrade over time and maintenance cost would increase over time, plane structure would fatigued even if done A-Checks, C-checks, heavy maintenance checks, etc…, so how is keeping the plane for “at least 2 or 3 decades” as you said is profitable?!

And forget A321neos or 737 MAXs or any other narrowbody aircraft flying outside Europe transatlantic, okay fine let 787 do the job but don’t you think their aging 777 also needed replacement for the 777X or A350? For example don’t you think KLM’s orange pride aircraft which was delivered to KLM wayy back in 2008 (16-17 years ago) needed retirement and replacement in the next coming years? Don’t you think KLM needs a newer and much more energy efficient aircraft that can even fly longer distances compared to their predecessors?

@@ramyfares9099 the 737-800 is literally proven to be one of the most fuel efficient and economical airplanes ever made. i’m confident they can last 30 years before retirement. the thing that i find crazy in this video is that they’re trying to act like KLM would retire all 737’s out of their fleet IMMEDIATELY for the A321neo, which would be a completely pointless and actually uneconomical to do. i’m still very sure the 737s in KLM’s fleet can last around 15 years but COME ON, no need to retire them immediately when they’ve only been halfway through the aircraft’s lifespan.
