I'm pushing 40, been screwing with carbs for the past almost 30 years. I can get them to work, I kind of know what I'm looking for. This is the best explanation I have ever heard, and it makes me realize how much banging my way through tuning a carb was mostly dumb luck. Thank you

Great guide! I'm a very digital person and always had a harder time understanding carburetion versus computer/EFI control. But I'm planning to build a retro street rod in the next couple years and fuel injection just doesn't feel right for what I have in mind. So this is a great start-to-finish for essential understanding and tuning that I will probably be coming back to later. Thanks!

Just a follow up. Went at the carb with a calibration kit and the knowledge I gained from this video and it runs 1000% better. Still need to go at it with an AFR gauge to get it really dialed in but still, WAY better. It think it must have been jetted for a lawn tractor. Again! Thank you!!!

  • @nickwarner8158
    @nickwarner8158 2 года назад +5

I like the way you approached explaining this and appreciate you taking the time to do so. I personally have two things I do first before getting to the beginning of your list.
    1. verify the harmonic damper is in good shape. A bad one can have the ring slip and your timing marks are worthless. If we are trying to deal with an older car with a carb we are talking a vehicle that is at least 35 years old. The ring is held with rubber. Rubber can fail, it cost me 18 years of child support.
    2. With the distributor cap off, bar the engine opposite of rotation until the rotor moves. Then bar the other direction to see how far you can go until the rotor moves again. If the thing already runs like ass, it might have nothing to do with the carb and just have a stretched timing chain. You need to know your valve timing is true and correct before doing anything or there isn't going to be a point in fiddling with it, no matter what you do it will run like ass. When it can't be driven, you can't get to work to pay the child support from the time you trusted a piece of rubber.

  • @mrromantimothy

For a distributor with points ignition before you set your initial timing you need to make sure your dwell is set correctly because, changes in dwell will affect your timing, also when setting initial timing make sure your idle speed is low enough to where your centrifical advance hasn't partially engaged. a Holley double pumper is designed and sold primarily for racing and are okay on the street as long as you aren't the one paying for your gasoline.

  • @archstanton9206
    @archstanton9206 2 года назад +3

Well done Kevin, really. I am 63 and have been building Holley Carbs since I was 15, and I think this is a great overview view of a Holley, and basic tuning procedures. I have an old SA Designs book on Holleys that has notes and jet numbers, etc on the inner rear cover and in the margins of pages. I was 16 when I wrote most of that stuff. That book is also a great resource if you can find one. It might be helpful to talk at some point about the things to never do with a Holley, like over-tightening the float bowls, or the base plate bolts, etc.
I run into so many carbs idiots have had there hands on with warped metering plate surfaces because some clown couldn't stop and change a gasket and tried to tighten the leaking gasket away. I was happy to hear you address the mixture screws with the caution on over tightening...another place the ham- fisted idiots leave traces of their "work".

Tuning mixture screws using a vacuum gauge is some of the most satisfying wrenching experience I've had. Well, screwdrivering I guess. But anyway, setting timing, checking to see if the mechanical advance works, getting the idle smooth, using the timing light, all this, it's a skillful art and if you know you know. YOU definitely know and sharing that knowledge makes you a stand up guy. Great video, even if you feel it's all over the place, well, this is how it is with these cars, you get started on a process and then two more things need fixed before you can get back to what you were doing. In this case, the advance springs jamming up and running out of fuel were the two that got you!

One question if you see this, how do you bring the idle down after getting the mixture and idle screw optimised for peak vacuum?
My idle is sitting at about 1000rpm with base timing approx 12deg which is 1.5x factory setting.
Even if I drop the timing to the 8deg factory setting, the idle stays high.

We have it running for the first time in 10 years and it is a complete block rebuild 355 with a mild cam and rebuilt heads. It runs if you hold the throttle open slightly, but then dies. I want this so bad for him but not sure if it actually will as the guys that were to help tune it are booked-up. This project started as a high school kid mowing yards to buy his first car. Agreed....great video. Trying to make sense of transfer slots, curb idle screws, and vac advance. It's a lot to absorb. This video definitely helped. One question I have however....when you adjust your AFR screws for max vacuum, it will change your idle RPM. Do I simply retard or advance initial timing to get to the idle speed I want? Or,......as some guys suggest, crack open the secondaries a tad to increase? Doesn't seem too popular with most tuners. But I am hell bent on not turning the curb idle screws any more after learning about transfer slots. It seems like a back and forth operation. Turn distributor, adjust air/fuel, turn distributor, adjust air/fuel.
And, how much vac advance should I be adding when running a non HEI distributor? Seems to be an elusive answer. If at idle I'm creating 15 manifold Vac, do I adjust my vac can to

Wonderful video for us shade tree mechanics. I bought a 67 Chevelle with a 396 in it. I know nothing about the motor but it does sound like it’s got a small cam. The carb is a 4 yr old 670 Holley. A certified mechanic said it has 9” of vacuum at idle. He set the 14^BTDC and total advance at 31^ . As far as I m concerned it still doesn’t run correctly. The tranny was changed to a 700r4 . Not sure if that makes any difference. I did notice this car has had a bung welded in the exhaust.
As far as I know nothing has been changed in that new carb that was purchased from Speedway.
Any advice on where to begin would be appreciated.
You explain things very good. Sounds like a AFR gauge is a game changer
    Thanks

    Three grand isn't "screaming"... 🤔
7300-7400 RPMs with a big block, now THAT'S starting to approach the screaming zone. 🤷

You brought back a lot of memories. Some of the steps I knew back in my early 20s I am now 69. I worked on my own vehicles as a young Army Trooper. Your video is excellent and content is plain and well understandable. I have Subscribed to your channel with notification. My Son and I have been trying to get is 1967 Chevy C10 to run better. We replaced the engine with a 327 that was built for an air boat. The air boat owner did not like the lack of kick when starting so he put this engine up for sale. It has a total of about 50 hours on it. We have been trying to set the Holley Street Dominator 650. It runs Ok but the fuel mileage sucks. I now know were to start.
Again a great video. One question on an AFR were is that connected while road testing.

I'm being impatient waiting for MOOK to make an Updated Video for the "Toasted Nova"...
Nova needs a LS Swap or a Rebuilt 350, with a TH400 Transmission with a modified rear Differential!
Leave all the "toasted" body panels please.

Very well explained. Yes, compounding....just like timing....which should also dispel the differing opinions on ported/non-ported vacuum advance.

We didn't bother trying to paint a line on the harmonic balancer mark. It's quicker to fill the mark with a piece of chalk and then, if you got some before/after the mark rub that part off. Quick, easy, and lasts just as long given the rain, etc. that splashes up on the balancer.

Hey, I really love the ladder analogy. I'm new to tuning a carburetor and have learned so much from your videos. Thank you for sharing. Do you have a follow-up video that tells you what to do if one is having problems with one of the 'rungs' on the ladder? I've got some mid-throttle hesitation on my new Edelbrock 1406 on a Chevy 350 and am not exactly sure if I need to adjust the power valve or the secondary jets.

This is an excellent video. Very complete and understandable. I was able to tune my carburetor after struggling for the last month. Great job, really enjoy your videos. I’m an old guy but you taught me something , thanks

I had a Carter AFB on my 1970 Model J Grand Prix with a 400 CID, I THOUGHT I knew something about Carbs when it went bad, there IS a science to rebuilding, and, adjusting a Carter AFB, had to take it to an expert!

I have 350 chevy truck 1978. When I use the gauge, the reading is not stable. It’s jumping pretty bad. Could it be the timing off? I’ve installed brand new Edelbrock 600 carburetor.

So if I have 19" vacuum at idle I need a 9.5 power valve correct? I have a 680 QFT on a 350 with mild cam and it idles rich. I am new to carbs.

Hi Kevin - nice work here. Maybe you already do but you should sell a poster of that procedure on the whiteboard, as well as a book to go with it. Perhaps collaborate with Luke. I think it would sell well. I would be interested.

Perfect video. Next week I'm gonna buy my first 1970 Italian twin double barrel carburator car. The car stood for some years, but it ran good upwards of 2000 rpm when tested last week. Only in idle it was a little weak. Looking forward to tuning this sweet project-car once I fixed the brake issues and some electrical issues with the lights.

I'm not so much a Holley Guy, but lots of people still love the Holley. I'm now using a new Edelbrock 650 for my stock standard Chevy 350ci.
I also have a used Holley 4165 lying in the garage haven't used for years. What do you reckon I should use, and why?

😁😃😄😆😅😂🤣 Schrödinger's carb! I love it! I'm definitely going to use that for future idiots who ask, "why do we have to tear the carb apart?"
