This was perfect for rebuilding my Dart 3. It's on a Giant XTC2 I bought new in 2008. I never serviced the fork, and it ceased to work a couple years ago. When I disassembled it, there wasn't much oil in it. No chrome pitting, thankfully. Now it works perfectly. Thanks mate!
I want to give you a thanks for your video. I bit the bullet last night and completely stripped down the dart forks I have. They where completely jammed, and the chrome legs were pretty rusted up this was dealt with with some wet& dry and then wire wool. Once i had cleaned the lowers and the legs, greased them up and re assembled the forks work like a dream. So thanks. Much appreciated.
Great video mate. Clear, concise and you managed to explain the functions of each component in plain English without getting overly technical as some others have a habit of doing. Therefore I found it very easy to understand as a newcomer to mountain bike specific parts and service. I now realise these things are not as complex as I had initially thought. Now feeling confident to give this a go on my own dart shocks, as they are behaving similarly to the way yours were previously. Many thanks for taking the time to make this video!
While some of your practices were a little heavy handed and some I admit just wrong (pouring old oil back in? 🤔) you have demonstrated how many people will realistically do it for their first time (and in the kitchen too - classic 😂) I respect your video and explanations, it will help some peeps that think a fork service is like rocket science! I hope those reading will take this advice but also watch a professional service video to find a nice balance 👍 for examples just having your bike in a stand (or like me, propped up using a couple of old chairs) would resolve some of the faffing and allows for a much easier dissemble & assembly. Also, tapping the bolts and sliding off the legs (lowers) first makes the rest of the job easier too. Thanks man here's a like! 👍
Thank you so much for this. I need to do mine but I was afraid to take it apart and not be able to get it back together. Feel confident after seeing you do it.
Thanks. It was really helpful the see how the adjustment mechanisms worked. Especially the preload adjustment. I kept spinning mine round and round and figured it might be broken, but watching your vid I see now it can spin quite a lot to adjust either way! It also made me realize on the oil side why the lock out and rebound adjuster don’t seem to work on mine. It’s either low on oil or there’s no oil at all! That would explain why they don’t work. Thanks again.
FYI, the Dart 3 service manual says 93ml of oil - I followed this guide, added 100ml, and couldn't compress the forks more than 15-20mm. I emptied them, and put 93ml in, and they worked like new.
What a brilliant video. I was struggling to find examples with the same bike as me. Total beginner looking to service during the COVID isolation. Thank you loads.
Thanks a lot for posting this. Clear instructions and in plain English. I've just taken a Dart 2 apart and expected to see the same problem as you but I didn't. No sign of rust but the oil was quite dirty. It went back together OK but the problem is still there. I suspect the problem is in the lock out assembly. I'm reluctant to take this apart (even if it's possible) as I've no idea what's inside. One thing about the fork I don't like is the use of plastic to hold the whole thing together, I don't think this is very strong.
Great video Anton. I have exactly the same , the Rockhopper in silver with seized forks. Was going to purchase new but now with your inspiration I’m getting stuck into a fork service. Many thanks.
Just came across this video , I have the exact same forks , and mine are also seized , was going to just replace with upgrade , but may have a look inside now after seeing this video of the exact same shocks (Y) You get yours to work again ?
nice video. Mine were really stiff too (float2). Followed your video and they were also full of cruddy grease. Cleaned it up, new grease and oil and they are as good as new. Cheers!
Good video. When you emptied the oil out you only had oil coming out from one side. When you filled the oil up you put oil in both sides. Do I put the 93ml of oil in both sides or just one side? Many thanks for your time.
This was a comment made by Papadopoulos Sotiris • 2 years ago hope it helps Hello , thanks for the video. We actually have the exact same fork AND fork technology. These forks are actually produced with different techlogys depending on actual model. Now i have also serviced me fork using your video and a lot of others. I should mention that i only had a minor "small bump" bad sensitivity. I serviced the the tubes and bumper but that didn't fix much the problem. So i bought a "spare part service kit" Turned out that many of the seals on the bumper side had gotten "flat" or in a bad shape so i changed them. Now it is ok . I have seen a REALY big mistake in your video . On minute 30:00 you add the fork oil on the lower legs but you don't move the legs a bit . It's hard for me to explain so please see this video ruclips.net/video/F0ji4sGcCrE/видео.html , on minute 6:00 he show the right way. Also note that we have a coil on the left leg so theoreticaly we need not put fork oil on left leg. But i did put some 5ml anyway like you did. Also something else, the fork on the video above have two foam fork seals. Our forks have the place to put them but no seals inside. I have ordered some from Ebay, i sugest you too. This video explains in detail what to do to service ruclips.net/video/OmehC5MJDHE/видео.html
This is super helpful. I was planning on just eating the cost of a new fork this summer when my summer job starts but hopefully I can clean it out and get it running like new.
Excellent video, the lock- out control also appears to control the compression damping by changing the oil orifice opening,(similar to the rebound circuit you mentioned )
I found using a wilco bottle brush makes cleaning the old gunk out of the fork lowers a doddle, perfect size & length for the job, only a quid too. No service kit should be without one😉 ( Other bottle brushes are available) 2010 Kona Fire Mountain, Dart 2's
I have the exact same fork / hydraulic break system as yours , Specialized Hardrock Pro 2011 ? . So , this video is perfect for me , They are seized at the moment and now I will give it a shot to see if they can be saved before buying new and improved lol . Had many good bikes but none compare to my Specialized HardRock Pro
This video is very helpful! My son got a used mtb with rockshox and I see what is wrong with his. It kinda works but the preload doesn’t turn. I think it is seized and the knob is cracked. I didn’t know enough when we bought the bike. Grrr. Oh well. It was a good deal, is there places to get replacement parts?
Hello mate! When you re-enter 100ml on the lockout sticks, is it possible to insert the RockShox 15wt ? like the bottom two? Thank you so much for your videos!
It’s really great video. Thanks for filming. My dart 2 is not working. It’s not moving even milimeter. I guess, i have similar problems with spring side which u solved in this video. Lockout mechanism is working, i checked. There’s oil in suspenssion side, nothing looks wrong. What do u think ? My suspicions about spring side is true? If u comment, i will be really greatful. Thanks.
I did service to my dart2. Spring was full of dirt and rust. I cleaned and lubricate with gres. It’s really working now. Thanks for your help by filming this video.
Hi, do you think, that servicing the damper is important for smoothness of the fork ? I was servicing my 11 years old seized Dart 3 this week and didn't do the damper service, because I didn't have the suspension oil and the fork isn't running smooth at all, even tho i cleaned and lubricated everithing (except the damper...).
Did you have any corrosion on the spring side like on mine, this is the most probable cause, I don’t think changing the oil will help, could be wrong tho 👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Had a question for you if you could help? I’m following this step by step and am at the point where I’m supposed to pull the leg off. Hi Anton! Thanks for this video! I make my video's on exactly the same bike as you have :-D Love it! One question though, when you dismantled the fork, there was a lot of oil coming out of it, way more than 2x 10ml. Can you tell why? Because now it looks that you put too less oil back in it!

I thought this was satire at first, but this guy thinks he's brilliant! Who does a fork service with the wheel on and the fork installed in the bike?!?! Oh, this guy does... Horribly done, unless you were joking. If so, this is brilliant.

I definitely don't think I am brilliant, what gave you that impression 😂😂 Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
