Hi, I'm Joëlle, bicycle mechanic and trainer at the CyCLO DIY workshop in Brussels. A few days ago, I passed a qualification exam of wheelbuilding. The wheel fulfilled almost all of the jury's requirements. I obtained 95%, because a wheel can never be perfect ;-) Dear Calvin and Truman, THANK YOU very much for the great videos! Always very instructive and nice to watch. Let's keep learning👩🔧
I did it! First time building wheels and it has become another fun part of my hobby. Tried it about 15 years ago but this time was a success. Thanks for the precise and clear instructions.
Well done ! I have many wheels ideas and wanna give it a try hassle free. I'm a good non professional mechanic already, what do you think are mandatory for building wheels, same as suggested in the video ?
This is an exemplary video in every way - production quality, presentation, content, clarity, supporting information... and I see from the comments that other people recognise it too. Six stars! I'm about to rebuild a wheel for the first time with complete confidence.
This is masterclass of not only wheel building, but instructional videos. Followed along step-by-step and built my second wheel. My first one a couple years ago seemed like such a pain.
This has to be one of the best produced videos on bike mechanics I've ever seen. Great editing, voice recording, super simple to understand. Thanks so much for sharing this.
hi, i ve built a wheel using this tutorial and a couple others. i had to tighten the spokes afterwards 2-3 times after i rode on that wheel but i think i did about 1500 km on that wheel and no spoke broke yet. It has been a fun process for me, i ve built it in a couple of days, i think i worked on it about 30 mins each day. this tutorial has been very helpful to me, its nice because i could follow along while building the wheel.
I just put a bike together which I collected from peoples garbage. Spokes were a wreck. Rim all damaged. Found this video and it helped me fix a wheel. New bike from people's garbage. Made it run like new. Thanks to this video.
i've built bikes from raw frame up but never a wheel. a relative recently had an issue with some broken spokes, even after it'd been to his lbs. i was not confident and watched some other videos that frankly left me totally confused. i then found this video - wow - shining a light thru the murk!!! best produced and clearest, most concise explanation of the entire wheel building process by miles. thanks for a brilliant job!!!
A friend is helping me build a wheel to convert my fixie to a 3-speed. While his help has been great and he suggested I watch this video, his suggestion came AFTER we laced the wheel. I wish I had known about this video first, it was great!
Thank you. This video is an outstanding contribution to the universal human knowledge bank called the internet. This vid makes wheel building accessible for everyone. It is amazing!
Wheel building is an amazingly liberating experience!! Was a USCF Cat III many years ago and was on a 250-mile per week regime back in the day. Blew up a wheel on Sunday morning and would be doomed to miss my training ride. So, I cracked a book, de-laced the potato-chipped wheel, got a new MA-40 and replacement spokes and began lacing. The WHOLE KEY was spoke length. From that moment on, I went on a wheel building binge -- even doing it for my team mates! I became a cycling God and the go to wrench for those guys. Nossir! No more begging for autographed water bottles or old jerseys from the arrogant shit Cat IIs on the team! _THEY_ made appointments with me and I made them grovel. I even got one of 'em to give me leadouts on the 30 and over weekly crits in exchange for building him wheels!
Your wheel building videos are fantastic. It had been 20 years since my last wheel building lesson ended in failure. This time, with your help, I have made wheels that are laterally true, radially true and have proper spoke tension. And the spoke tension values are all within 10% of each other! You have provided excellent videos and tools, thanks!!
Greetings from Germany, I've just ordered the blue book 4th edition. You are doing a great job. Just Built my 6th wheel, two rear with motor and four front wheels. I always com back to your colored setup, which helps a lot. Great explanation. Keep on going with good stuff like this. Dietrich Winsen upon Aller - Lüneburger Heide - Lower Saxony
Great video! I've already built a few wheels myself and was watching to learn any new tips and tricks. One that helps me a lot, but wasn't mentioned here, is to number the spokes after lacing to help keep track during tensioning and truing. I write the spoke number starting at the valve hole in marker pen on the brake-track of each side (in this case 1 to 16). This helps me to remember which spoke I just tightened/loosened and which are loose or tight.
Thank you ParkTools. This video saved me a bunch of money and is keeping me ridding. I was having issues with my current wheel set, so I figured a spare was in order. After searching internet and being told it would be weeks or months until a new set, i ordered the parts and got to work. It has taken me about two weeks to build the set, only working on in the evenings. I am more than satisfied with my results, I not only learned how to build a strong wheel, but learned what can make a wheel strong and keep it true and reliable. I didn’t go crazy high end with the wheel set, but i did get quality parts that should last until i tackle another set of wheels or rebuild the current set i have. Thank you again
I've been a motorcyclist for years but recently just got super into mountain biking. Alongside that I love tinkering and customizing. The idea of building a wheel was the most foreign concept to me but this video gave me a ton of confidence. I really want to try building my own bike now!
Simply the best video for wheel building! Even for the beginners in wheel building like me. Already on my 5th wheel build in a couple of weeks. Thank you!
Learned wheel lacing the hard way, I have to use one of my older wheels as a reference and repeated practicing in my other old wheel for about 5 times until I'm confident enough to build my new wheel. Done it in about an hour per wheel and realized it's a skill worth learning. Great video for beginners!
It has been two years since I built up wheels for my GasBike. As per your video, they were 3 cross lacing. Followed instructions, so it was straight forward. Two years later and I am finally getting around to lacing up a wheel for my Ebike. Difference is it is a 2 cross. I went back to your video to review, but was not quite sure if the process was the same, so i started to look at other videos showing a specific 2 lace process. They were completely crap. What I realized how good your video is, so with a minor adaptation it was an easy build. You and Park Tools are to be commended for your superior product.
I have assembled a wheel in over 20 years. This video is outstanding. Used this to refresh all the details. Put my new hubs, old spokes and old rim together in the time of this video. Did it on the floor of my family room. The dishing and truing will be done on my Park Turing Stand in the garage, on my work bench, on a warmer day.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was given some printed instructions with a different method which worked OK for a front wheel with an instructor standing over me. Flash forward a couple of years, me needing to build a rear wheel without an instructor to correct me and failing miserably on several occasions using the printouts. First time using this video and it laced up marvellously. Chapeau, Park Tool!
Hi, I just wanted to say: We met in Frankfurt in 2022 at the Eurobike and talked a bit, and now I am back again learning from you on RUclips! Infinite thank you for the knowledge you share here!

I built a wheel all from this video, having never done it before. This video was clear, complete, AND concise, something extremely rare in this day and age. Well done.
Great wheel building instructions Park Tool. I now have a set of 700c disc gravel wheels that I built, it`s always a good feeling building stuff for yourself. Thanks guys.
Great video i put a new dynamo hub in my 700c rim I used my forks and cable ties as a truing stand Two glass jars with lids and coins as my dishing tool Took me about 4-5 hours my best tool is a spoke key My wheel is super smooth and your video is 100% thank you
