- Knowing how to set up your mountain bike fork can be pretty daunting. MTB mechanic tech terms such as bracketing, progressive spring rate, linear spring rate, packing up, standing up etc.. Can be great to discuss when you know what they mean. But the only way to really get a fork setup dialled to your preference is to actually go riding! In this video, we explain the top tips to follow to have your fork running as it should, so you can focus on shredding trails! 🤘

I didn't understand a single principle you explained, but I enjoyed every metaphor you used! 😂❤
this is probably the best suspension setup explanation i have ever seen, good job.
Love how he emphasizes its either better or worse. Too many people get hung up on pressures, clicks and tokens. Sorry to see him leave, awesome guy
you all prolly dont give a shit but does any of you know of a way to log back into an Instagram account??
I somehow forgot the login password. I would love any tips you can offer me
@Maddux Clayton thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Maddux Clayton It worked and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much you saved my ass!
@Dante Billy you are welcome xD

This guy is a genius what I like about is his invaluable information and experience sadly he will be missed
EMGlifeforGAMING Adepoju didnt no he left ? He’s a very knowledgeable guy 👌🏻
Danny Lilley moving to South America somewhere. Talked about it in a dirt shed show.
CRE2342 wow, he’s gona be missed on was a joy to watch and learn new things. But I hope his next journey goes well
I'm so sad to hear he is leaving. He is the most technical broadcaster on GMBN tech...
shit hes leaving?? that sux... great guy!!!!
This is like watching a David Attenborough documentary about forks. But jokes aside this was extremely informative and well done. Thank you.
Properly detailed and clear as ever...
Especially using same pump (accuracy is a factor of consistency), and that reattaching pump drops pressure ONLY because air fills the pump (you do not loose pressure on fork when removing pumps)
Just don’t buy the REI shock pump it loses air connecting and removing. 👎
Yep,gutted your leaving Henry, hope everything you do in the future works out
As always, great video. Will be a big loss for Gmbn Tech without Henry 😕
That's like your opinion, man.
Yep, totally will. Knowledge and clarity of presentation second to none
Foxtrot Mike Lima It is his opinion not just like it.
This is a superb video. Really helped me so much!! Just bought my dream bike with full suspension & I had no idea of how to set up my forks or rear sus. Nobody else seems to mention the negative & positive air chamber things. Glad you explained it well. Thanks a lot.
Going to miss these videos Henry.....all the best for the future
Best video I've seen on fork setup.
Very good presentation. Helped me as a first mtb buyer alot. Cheers
Sometimes things are best explained in simple terms and then there is this. Great stuff.
Great video! Realize now there’s a lot more I can do to fully dial-in my suspension. Much appreciated.
One of the best set up video's - we need more of this style
Just bought a new pair of Rock Shox that arrived an hour ago, then this vid was top of my feed 😂 spooky
Will miss Henry, have become confident in stripping my shock and fork down while watching his vids. Great presenter who know his subject. Good luck buddy
Excellent video for experienced, and those who are just learning to set up their suspension forks. I'm pretty experienced at setting up my suspension forks, and I got some valuable information on tuning and sessioning, to find that sweet spot we're trying to set.
I downloaded the rock shox app, put in the fork model and my fat guy weight, it told me the exact pressure and rebound I needed, it was spot on and my bike rides amazing. I ride a Trek Roscoe with Rock Shox 35 gold RL, 160mm travel, 44mm offset, 15mm boost axle, 150 psi with -7 rebound
You overforked the Roscoe from 120mm to 160mm? Wow, that's a lot!
Rockshox 'Trail head' app is great for set up.
But RS are well known for being simple and accurate to set up, v Fox or dvo etc.
They defo lead the way in set up ease.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you". I have recently built myself a reactor with the pike forks and I am still new to the setting up of forks etc. This is so easy to understand and I will go as far as to say maybe the best video that explains this on RUclips. Henry.......YOU WILL BE MISSED. Good luck in your future dude. Peace out
Download the rock shox app and it'll make setting up your fork super easy
Allways watch GMBN and tech allways great explaining everything easy to follow . I have just got a set of rockshox yari charge and need to set it up
And the pronunciation is great to follow! Thanks 🙏🏻
The Brian Cox of suspension.
I feel like i'm going to become like Shia Labeouf shortly , rewatching all Henrys videos and developing small tears in the process, Bon Voyage guy.. Come back to NZ when you can.
Many Rock Shox Forks Damping can be internally adjusted by changing some shims on top of the damper cartridge. Was expecting Henry to take the Fork apart and show us this!
There’s not many videos that explain fork fettling as well as this one. Well done 👍
Found this very useful for setting up my new Pike Select+ here in late 2021
Another quality video hq! You will be missed in GMBN Tech! Think we need a GMBN tech Quiz.... Doddy vs Oli vs Henry.... with Blake the Quiz master!
This video is hands down the best suspension video I have ever seen. Great work by the team at GMBN Tech!
Henry the viii... You will be missed, thanks for all your info.
Excellent video, detailed and so well spoken. I'm a complete noob and this has been ever so helpful. Thanks!
Any chance of seeing that video Doddy spoke about making regarding the service/setup for coil forks like the Rockshox XC30 or similarly priced Suntours...ya know, the type of fork that are on most bikes under $1000 that many (most?) of your subs are riding on...
Excellent video. Thank you for this complete explanation on how to set RS Fork at best
bro i love your vids and you have great personality.. just calm cool and collected with lot of great insights and tips...this vid helped me alot on tuning my fork.. Thanx for taking your time to do all your vids it helps alot especially a newbie to MTB's like me... :) oh and sweet riding skillz, def some style points on those jumps my man.....
Legend thank yiu for taking your time to post this I found it extremely helpful
Thank you Henry! i will miss you on the channel.
Wow! Nice! Definitely watching it multiple times again. Thanks
Gonna miss this bloke when he leaves speaks in layman’s terms very well
russell jackson is he leaving?
Why and how do ya know? Must of missed something.
I were just thinking the exact same 👍
Henry finally resurfaced on pinkbike
Awesome explanation! So easy to understand and follow thoroughly. Thank you for makingand sharing all this information, seriously. Thank you. Keep up with the great work. 👍🏻
Yep...spreadsheet...printed off and kept with my shock pump🤘😁
I have 2 questions...
1. I understood what we are looking and feeling for up to rebound, but it wasn't very clear when it came to compression? He just says "it feels great" 🤷🏽♂️
2. At the end he mentioned going back to sag if all else fails. Does he mean setting the sag with all the new compression and rebound settings you've input while testing? Or starting from scratch opening up the compression and rebound?
Thanks guys! Very informative and helpful 🙏🏽
Super nice explanation! How to set up for dummies... should be the title.. good job dude
Thanks Henry, as always you explain in detail all aspects of how a shock works. Most important part is how it works for me and my riding style.
Indeed being consistent in the way you measure sag on the front is really the key for a good setup. I find myself really struggling with the usual methods. If you lean over the front you rarely do it the same amount. Easy to verify: measure the sag 3 - 5 times in a row without doing any change and I would be surprised if you get the same numbers all the times. For me that doesn't happen at all and it caused me wrong setups in the past. Maybe sitting on the top tube nearer the front could yield more consistent results. But another way I'm experimenting with now is simply pumping down the fork with my upper body weight while standing on the side of the bike. This seems to give me much more consistent and reproducible results compared to sag as to find the correct setup. I know I need about 50% travel when pumping down and this gives me a fairly good starting point with the pressure and this also happens to match what RockShox suggests, so I think I'm on the right path.
The rear is much easier and consistent with sag measurements, just put your full weight on the saddle, done.
Yeah I don’t obsess over the sag set , ( trying to measure ) due to the variations you can get , I do a bit initially to get it close , but then go off feel as I adjust to get it right
Thanks for the video, that was a very good and chill explanation! On a sidenote, Henry got so good at talking to the camera, I'll miss him :)
Its worth noting that on the 2021 Debonair spring, the pressure equalizes whilst you pump it up, without the need to compress it
Articulated immaculately. This was great help
Nice vid bro . as a 45 year old going onto full sus after a 10 year break im no longer confused Thanks.................
If Henry's brakes squeal, I guess it's ok mine do to
Mine scream and shudder
mine howl super loud
LOL!!! I keep having to re-adjust my back one. Shudders at certain speeds slowing down. It's getting better.
Henry thank you for the information, and details to fit my front shock to my weight and needs. It made alot of sense.Rather than 4 clicks your done.Yes it takes time but then again it fits my weight and needs.thanks
Very useful information for a newbie like myself. Happy to know sooner than later. Thanks!
So much wisdom and so well explained. Thanks, Henry!
Fork setup simplified. Quality vid Henry. 🤜
@16:07 the brakes sound and the music sound is just perfect for unknown reasons lolxD
lol I noticed the same thing! Also made me wonder if I should trust a guy whose brakes don’t seem perfectly tuned!
Great video, perfect explanation. Really like it
What a great tutorial!!!!!!!!
Great video mate!
Henry... you the Man!
brilliant.I actually understood all that.🤘
Very good vid indeed
That was a VERY helpful video! Thank you!
Awesome Henry!
What a fantastic video, we're going to miss your style Henry
Excellent video! Thank you!
I will miss your videos when yer gone man, great stuff.
Another great video. This was so helpful thankyou gmbn...
If you want to skip the intros, jump to 2:30 in the timeline
Top Job Henry!
Interesting thanks. I also like to match the feel of the front & rear.
I don't know if my eyes are failing me or he was using two different bikes with very different travel on the forks? One looked like about a 100mm travel and the other much longer, maybe a 160mm? 20% sag seems awful low to me but maybe that's more appropriate for that short travel fork. I have a Lyrik 170mm and RockShox's manual says to go for 30%-40% sag. Probably too model specific for this though. The video was very helpful, I think I can get my fork dialed in really well after watching this.
This was so helpful! Thanks for the awesome explanation, you are the best!
Great Video, simple and great explanation
New to this channel today. Great video, simple step by step.... esp for RS this methodology just works. Thank you! Where is Henry going?
Great video for suspension setup 😎
So much good info here, will need to try this next time I ride. My Yari felt harsh so I dropped the pressure from 100 to 60 still gets good sag but rebound and compression is completely open now. However it seems that I have lost feedback and control somewhat. Will try these recommendations to see if I can find a good compromise between comfort and control.
Rebound is linked to rider weight and distribution, something neither this guy nor many others ever mention.
Heavier rider(and or more weight on a specific shock) = more open (less damping)
& Vice versa.
I.e.
Average weight rider / bike, flat terrain, neutral balanced stance = central clicks (front & rear)
Heavier downhill rider = more open front rebound and comparitively closed rear.
Lighter XC (uphill) rider = slightly faster open rear, slightly slower closed front...
Etc.
Great detailed and clear explanations.
Awesome video Henry, will definitely be playing around with my settings after this advice
Thanks, very informative and useful.
Top Content in here!

Good information, helpfull! Maybe a 2020 Fox setup vs a 2020 Roxkshox 2.1 Charger setup?
Fantastic video and information…Tomatoes and Fruit Salad.
Great video Henry, you’ll be missed dude ☹️
RS also have the quarq to really dial set up...u can hire them, or buy for about £200
Brilliant thanks
Amazing video THANKYOU
My head exploded with all the tech talk
Can you guys do a video on setting up Ohlins forks?? they are a real head scratcher to get sorted.....
Great Video
Great explanation but the link to the site for the Rockshox serial numbers is not in the description.
