  • On Dec 3, 2023, I ran my 8th California International Marathon (CIM). It was just 8 weeks after Chicago when I ran my best time in 12 years. My legs were still tired. In addition, I had right knee soreness 4 weeks before CIM that affected my training. I still planned to run sub 3:05. "Brave" was the key word I will use for this race. I wasn't in shape but I would be brave to stay with the 3:05 pace group for as long as possible.

    Thanks for filming, editing and posting this. Was nice to relive the course after recovering! Good work and smart to take a break…it’s also mentally taxing unless you are a fun runner, which you clearly are not. 💪

    Congratulations on an amazing year of running. Even when you were slowing in the last few miles, you were still passing others. You're extremely fit and deserve your break to rest and heal. I believe you can get that sub 3 when you're ready to come back.
    Have a look at a few RUclips videos while you're resting. They may give you what your after. I am going to apply all of these into my next attempt at the marathon.
    1.Fredrik zillen how to become a more efficient runner.
    2.fredrik zillen why you run slower when you get tired or older.
    And also vids on polymetric.
    The other things I've been looking at is adding strides into every run and or 8-12 second hill sprints. And the one we all struggle with the most is body weight this can give pretty good results in finishing times alone. Weighted inclusion squats And don't forget kettle bell swings. The one thing to look out for when skipping or doing the jumping exercise is don't land on your toes it has to be midfoot Hopefully it all adds up to 2:59. Last year I ran 3:35 this year 3:18 with 55 mile pfitzinger plan. And next year I'm doing all of the above exercises with 60 mile pfitzinger plan. (Adding 1.7 mile mix of strides,hillsprints,MP at the end of 3 schedule runs each week but not touching the recovery runs) And the number one thing is sleep I reckon I will get dame close with this if not all the way. Good luck and we can do it.

    Great race! Love the videos. Been thinking of doing CIM next year and seeing the course up close with all the race logistics is really valuable.
    We're basically the same age and it's inspiring what you've been able to do. I'm on the comeback trail having virtually stopped running (less than 10 miles per week) the last 10 years and am up to 40 to 50 miles per week after restarting in March. I've been able to handle the mileage easier than I expected but am surprised at the toll race efforts take on my system. Just a 10k max effort will knock my system out of whack for around 10 days when I used to do long runs the next day. It's not muscle fatigue, it's some kind of CNS or maybe metabolic stress. I can't image doing all these marathon efforts in such a short period. Enjoy a well-deserved (!) break and maybe focus on shorter stuff for a while.

      With consistent training, you will surprise yourself. When I first started running 18 years ago, I couldn't run a 5k at my current Marathon pace either.

    this is a great video and you ran a great race. I enjoyed listening to your self-talk. It reminded me of the thoughts I have during my marathons. For having a difficult day you pushed through and passed many people. It seems that CIM is a marathon where more people really "go for it" and push the red line. Perhaps that is why you saw so many walkers even early on in the race at your quick pace.

    You did an excellent job completing the race at a very respectable time, despite not beating your own target. I always keep in mind today’s legs isn’t yesterday’s legs. We should be grateful to be able to continue to run.

    Good job and thanks for this awesome video. You are strong and I am sure you will come back stronger and run faster in your next race. I did not meet my goal either (finished at 3:36:13) in this race. I am planning to attempt 3:25 in the next year napa valley marathon. Your videos are very helpful and I think I am going to watch them again and again :-)

      Thanks and glad you like the video. Napa in many ways is similar to CIM but there are some subtle differences. The first half of the course is somewhat windy. It makes running tangents all that more important. There are usually not as many runners as CIM so at times you may not have people around you. However, overall I really like the race. If I didn't pledge to take a break, I would have chosen to run Napa next year too.

    Congratulations on your race! What camera did you use to record the race footage while you were running? Was it attached to your hat? I am running my first marathon at CIM this year and want to record it too. Your videos are so helpful. Thank you!

      During the race, I used Insta Go 3. It is a very lightweight camera. The downside is that it only has about 30 minutes of battery life.

    Congratulations on completing CIM! I ran it too. The VIP package looks very interesting. Thanks for showing that part of the experience. Do you feel it was worth the cost, and do you recall how much?

    • @gcklo
      @gcklo  7 месяцев назад

      Price of the VIP program has been increasing. It was just a bit over $150 in 2021. I think it was almost $300 in 2023. It is a bit pricey.

    Miles 7-17 are constant rollers worth close to 600 feet gain. This race being advertised as fast down hill is false advertising 😅. I just ran this For the first and last time. Chicago & Houston are way easier

    • @gcklo
      @gcklo  7 месяцев назад

      That's very true. It is not as easy as advertised for sure. To run CIM well, one really needs to spend lots of time training on rolling hills. Also, this year's Chicago's weather was much better too.
