There's a lot more to the story than these first parts. After Herbert saw how people reacted to the first Dune, seeing Paul was received as a hero, despite the warnings of what his actions would cause. In Dune Messiah, the second book, he shows you the consequences of what happened in Dune, and it is not pretty. Paul is a tragic hero, and if you know what that really means, then you know things will not go well for Paul. I hope Denis does Messiah, but is nothing like Dune, no crazy battles, just all the political ramifications that come from the resolution of this story.

While I don't think Zendaya was overacting, I do think chani overreacted in a couple of scenes. Now idk if that's chani's personality even in the books. But while I love Zendaya for how she carries herself, I don't think she's on the same level of acting skills as Saoirse, Florence or Anya. a person's charming and humble personality doesn't equate to having stellar acting chops and that's something fans should be okay with. I adore keanu but I wouldn't rank him as one of the best actors I have ever seen.. I thought she was better in Malcolm and Marie and euphoria. Maybe it's because the whole cast of dune is sooo excellent that she doesn't shine as much?
Honestly, this movie feels like the dark knight. It's technically a sequel, and there are technically more movies to come in this story, but I can definatly see myself watch this movie on it's own. It's beginning needs a little bit of prior movie knowledge, but it's still pretty self contained, and the ending could be the official DUNE ending and I'll be satisfied
One of the things I found interesting was Denis talking about he wanted to prove that a cinematic movie can be made without large amounts of CGI. With this film a lot of the scenery is on location and things BUILT for the sake of this film. That’s what makes his director stellar
Watching this reminds me how remarkable The Creator would've been with this budget 🔥🔥👍🏾 I shed multiple tears throughout and energized at the same time lol..MASTERPIECE
This might be the best cinema experience I've ever had. Only comparable films in terms of how into the movie I was would perhaps be the first Avengers film or Avengers Endgame (I didn't get to see LOTR in the cinema) I think what was really great about this movie was its pace. Even with the moments where the tempo was down, for example when Chani and Paul were talking about his nightmares, it still felt like the story was moving forward, like every single minute was just packed with material.
11:20 - part of it for me that's kind of jarring is she's the one (from what I can remember) Fremen character that uses a straight American accent so I was reminded a few times while watching that I was watching Zendaya

What the heck is going on with Villeneuve, first a masterpiece sequel to Blade Runner, and now a masterpiece sequel it seems for Dune part 1? Can't wait to see it in the biggest screen I can find.
Why criticize Spider-Man Across the Spider-verse being half a film but not Dune part 1? Part 1 was a lenthy, self-serious installment that ended abruptly and didn't satisfy half as much as the Spider-verse sequel
I liked Zendaya's performance personally. Dave Bautista is the only actor i felt was a bit off, too much yelling/overacting imo personally i feel part 1 was better, though still really liked 2
Its not a part 3, these first two movies are the first Dune novel split into two films, the second novel is called Dune Messiah which may be the third film.
I get what he meant about the fight scenes. As a big gun nerd and avid competition shooter.... When action scenes have people shooting and they have bad technique or just terrible gear.... or bad safety habits it takes me out of the movie because they are supposed to be highly trained but are doing simple dumb things that only a noob would do....
On the topic of 'colonialism'. You guys clearly didn't read the book. The Fremen 'are' the colonists. The planet literally belongs to the Emperor. It was a discovered, claimed and own empty planet that was a property of the imperium long before the Fremen arrived there. And the way they arrived there was that the past emperor, ahem, 'invited' them to settle on it. Ok, he enacted a disapora and forced them to live there. So essentially, Arakis, Dune is a spice farming plannet and the Fremen are the Emperors tenants. So the Emperor is not technically a coloniser, because you can't colonise a planet you already own. I mean, going by the exact meaning of the word you can. But on the whole, technically, legally, the planet belongs to the emperor and the Fremen are his tenants. Naturally, after thousands of years they don't see it that way. But legally that is the case.

Of course her performance doesn't take away from other actors performances since they were all stellar, but she certainly did keep me from enjoying the movie more since she's such a big part of the movie this time around. I was looking for someone to talk about it but I guess everyone is scared of her fanbase, but glad I'm not the only one.
I could see her overacting from the trailers of Part 2 alone. Why D.V didnt direct her into more of a subdued/nuanced performance I dont know - she was fine in Part 1.

I think there is an overall problem with Chani in this addaptation. And the actress is kind of suffering with it and going a bit too much on emotional side. Which, her arc is supposed to be really emotional. Just, the movie throws her additional angles and inner conflicts. Chani is supposed to be a Fremen and she is one of the strongest more dedicated characters in the original. But she is not exactly there to question Paul. Quite the other way around. Original Chani has lost most of her close family including her father being murdered. Kynes was supposed to be her father and not a fremen lady like in part 1. He was also the leader of the fremen giving Chani some status. This immediately placed Chani fully on board with Paul as he starts to lead the Fremen into all out war. She wants revenge and she wants the Fremen to come up on top. If anyone, it is actually Jessica who starts to question Paul in the books. Not Chani. I think this new addaptation feared Chani would look like she was just following Paul. Which she does in the books. But it makes sense because Paul is everything which she wants. That´s why she does not question his lead and does not get involved with politics. She is at his side and that´s what she wants. True love, deddication. She will do whatever she needs to support him. There is an interesting question about how much did she believe in prophecies. There is no question she is self aware and has some insight. It reads more like she very consciously supported Paul because she loves him and wants him to lead the Fremen. Also, it reads like she understands something about the concept of the KH and how much power Paul can have. She received all possible formal education and she is the closest to a BG that the fremen would have. Its true that Paul functions almost like a divine presence but we never get the feeling Chani looks at him like a divine being. She never reads like she is coming from the religous angle. I think her being the daughter of the Fremen leader already hints that she likely has a deeper grasp on everything. Her education and her status translate that she is in a place that she does understand way more vs average fremen. I am quite curious how they will manage her character going forward. Because she is supposed to be 200% with Paul. And that´s pretty key to her character arc and what is yet to come.
I think Frank really messed up on not fleshing out Chani hence the book readers still saw Paul as a hero after reading Dune which is why Denis wanted to honor the intial intentions of Frank by using a new characterisation of Chani to make Paul seem like an anti-hero before even Dune Messiah is adapted so whilst it's understandable that changing the character is doing too much for book purits-the average audience who probably won't read the book need to understand that Paul isn't a white saviour like they suspected from the first movie which is I think why Denis wanted to change Chani but I agree that it becomes a new thing that would beg the audience who read the book to ask themselves if this is even Dune at all The interesting aspect of Messiah is the intro which is where I stopped reading once I understood that the movie would be different so I didn't want to ruin my experience of it,is that they say the book readers in the 60s hated Messiah because Paul became a different person almost like a villain and they (surprisingly) blamed Chani for the events that had happened which shocked me so I hope the changes in the events of the movie would cause the audience to blame Paul and not Chani
@@karabokhanyile What you say is quite weird. For someone to read Messiah and think Chani is to blame? Because knowing what she will do and what will happen, how could anyone feel any negative feelins towards her? Also her being responsible for Paul´s behaviour? What in the book would make you feel like that? Chani has no big interference in politics or in imperial decisions. She is not rulling the empire. She is not even Paul´s official wife. So I have no idea where you are coming from. Maybe you should read past the intro? You know, Chani is a very tragic character in Messiah.....just saying....
@@Ruimas28 I know the story of what happens in Dune Messiah although I haven't read it lol,I was saying that that's what the Intro was saying from the reviews from the Dune Messiah books when it came out and that was surprising to me like I said. What I'm saying is that there was a gap between what Frank intended with Dune the first book and how the audience perceived Paul and he thus corrected it with Dune Messiah but Denis has the privilege of honoring the initial intentions of the author earlier than Frank had the privilege of doing ito audience perception of Paul as a hero vs anti-hero hence he felt Chani was the right tool to do that, nevermind the part of her being blamed for what had happened in Messiah I just used it as an example about how different a character can be perceived if the audience has main character bias just because most things we read from Paul's pov
@@karabokhanyile The only problem is that there was no need to change Chani. You just need to keep telling the story. Which is what the miniseries in the early 2000´s did by the way. And if you want to question the religious fanatics, you can have Paul and Jessica talking about it. Which would still remain more true to the books. You know, the problem with having Chani questioning Paul becoming the Messiah is that you then need to ask why does she not question anything else. Because, among everything which will happen around her and Paul, its pretty odd to only question the becoming a Messiah thing. Because I do not think anyone else is reading us and you claim to know the story..... Isnt it weird for Chani to question Paul´s climb to power and then suddenly be fine with risking her life to get pregnant? Which...is not exactly what will stop the conflicts anyway. So...if you have a questioning Chani you will be forced to have a Chani who is obsessed with having children? Because otherwise why risk her life to give Paul an heir? I will also add: Isnt it worse for her character to be so blindly in love with a guy that she openly finds questionable? Wasnt it better to have the original version when mostly they had plenty of similar goals? She was still never portrayed nearly as harsh as he was. But it just made sense that she would support him and be in love. Its different if your loved one is going a bit over the top with things you wanted to happen. Instead of your loved one doing things you find questionable.
If the world is rich and interesting, I like when the movie takes its time. Let me look at that world in details. Why do people need to run all the time? Chill.
I think with Zendaya if you don't really feel her as an actress you won't feel her in other stuff she does,so if you like her you'll like her but if you've always struggled getting into her as an actress then you'll struggle with her everywhere imo.

Jaby come across like someone who has built an identity around finding faults. Even when there is none.
Watching this reminds me how remarkable The Creator would've been with this budget 🔥🔥👍🏾 I shed multiple tears throughout and energized at the same time lol..MASTERPIECE
Denis is the best filmmaker around
One of the GOAT sci fi films!!!!
This might be the best cinema experience I've ever had. Only comparable films in terms of how into the movie I was would perhaps be the first Avengers film or Avengers Endgame (I didn't get to see LOTR in the cinema)
I think what was really great about this movie was its pace. Even with the moments where the tempo was down, for example when Chani and Paul were talking about his nightmares, it still felt like the story was moving forward, like every single minute was just packed with material.
So true about Christopher Walken. I have the same feeling about him.
1:30
Achara, never change. haha
11:20 - part of it for me that's kind of jarring is she's the one (from what I can remember) Fremen character that uses a straight American accent so I was reminded a few times while watching that I was watching Zendaya
You know that they'll be getting an Oscar nomination for costume design just by looking at the trailers.
Isnt Dune Messiah the next one?
yes
they're just going to call it dune part 3 i bet, not sure they can push this past a trilogy since the rest of the books get into some crazy territory 😄
Arrival and Matrix posters, two of the greatest films ever.
It's still hard not to see him as Elvis because he played that role so well I almost believed he was Elvis
I haven't seen that, I just see him as Tex from the Manson Family getting his head flattened by brad Pitt hahaha
BR 2049 has held my top film spot since its release. Im hopeing dune part 2 knock BR off the top spot .
Huge Villeneuve fan obviously!
Great review guys can't wait to watch this! Heads up, still not pronouncing his name right haha it's Vil-nuv, gotta pronounce the L.
Yeah I've been watching part 1 damn near all February just so I could go in part 2 remembering names and such. I see it the 29th, can't wait.
i see it on 1st of March and I'm pretty excited cuz it is the first movie I'll watch in IMAX. Can't Wait.
I know what Jaby is talking about at the end, that is my only complaint too. beside that the movie is a masterpiece.
It’s Deni + Will-Nuv (Villeneuve).
100% , such a complete, brilliant, breathtaking movie! This is “Empire Strikes Back” to the Star Wars trilogy. The religion aspect, Chalomet (what a massive actor! Wowza!), Bardem… damn you, Villeneuve! Now I won’t be able to like any other movie this year!!!
Now that you've nitpicked the fight scene I'm forced to be on the lookout for the things you had gripes with😅
It's not a nitpick. It's a reasonable criticism of a film. I wish more would bring these up.
@@shefalichow7917 I think his martial arts expertise is the reason why he wasn't satisfied but the rest of the audience probably won't see the issue just as other critics didn't hence I'm saying it's a nitpick because he would probably be part of the 20% that notices it. Unless someone else who notices goes viral on social media by making others notice as well and it becomes a whole thing lol then we're talking
@@karabokhanyile Just because many might not notice there's something off (due to lack of experience in martial arts), doesn't make it less off, or any less important. A nitpick connotates that they're being unfairly critical of something truly petty. I think good fight choreography is integral to immersion, and adds a lot to characterization, especially during an important fight.
@@shefalichow7917 Yeah no I think we define nitpick differently hence the different opinions,I hear you tho but I wasn't using the term like you're using it lol
@@karabokhanyile Okay then. Chalk it up to a misunderstanding. Nice talking to you.
Just watched it and now I’m here !! Well at first I certainly liked part one more than two I remember being hooked in from the start like times flow by but in part two Idk I was hooked in when we had 30 minutes left and when I was so hyped it finished 😅
Hyped to see this!
I m watching this in a 120 foot long as* theatre ,the wait is killing me damn
The contemplation of religious belief on politics/government/society is a central theme of the books.
What the heck is going on with Villeneuve, first a masterpiece sequel to Blade Runner, and now a masterpiece sequel it seems for Dune part 1? Can't wait to see it in the biggest screen I can find.
Jaby, I'm with you; I didn't like Zendaya's performance in the thirs act at all--it was frustratingly one-note.
Wait. So there's a part 3?
Dune Messiah
Its not a part 3, these first two movies are the first Dune novel split into two films, the second novel is called Dune Messiah which may be the third film.
Coulda let her finish the point about colonialism, since that's the basis of the series.
I've seen it today and all I can say is Austin Butler is HOTTTT
I agree with the lady. Brilliantly Multi-Talented Zendaya's acting is magnificent.
No she is the worst part of the movie and the movie is a solid 8. They should have hade a diffrent actress
In an alternate universe the Emperor in Star Wars was played by Christopher Walken 😂
Great review but you lost me when you criticised Zendaya’s acting…
But legally that is the case.
cry harder
You didn't talk about Romance.
whoahh you knew Austin's mum and sister? 😳
What's the prices of me is at Dan Merrill thought that timothee chalamet was miscast in wonka. I thought Timothy Charlamagne did a wonderful job in wonka. Excuse my speech to text.

Jaby always amazes me with his reviews, cause he always says the same shit I say. His favouirtes are my favourites
Denis did say he made sure that you can watch part 2 without having watched part 1
You can. But don't do that.
The cartoon of eship is scarer I think
Yeah it was awesome
If part 2 is this good im afraid part 3 will disappoint a lot of people. I like it though
Nolan said its GREAT so............ THE END.
After Oppenheimer, I'll take anything he says with a grain of salt.
@@shefalichow7917Oppenhimer is great wtf u on about
I’m with Jaby, zendaya isn’t bad but compared to the rest she is definitely a low point in this film for me
Matrix , Arrival , Background ??? That is all i need to see to Subscribe ...
I can never see Dune Part 1 being compared to the Godfather. It's more Batman Begins.
Finally someone bold enough to talk about Zendaya's overacting. God, I saw the movie this week and that bothered me so much, and on the big screen is just so jarring.
@@6kembe4orba I saw it in the trailers as well, but I just thought it was due to not having full context of the scene, so I just brushed it off. God, was I wrong lol and yeah, you're right. But I guess she was fine in part one because she didn't have a lot of scenes tbh.
@@6kembe4orba Modern politics. He mentioned in an interview how much he valued the female "voice" in particular. And yeah mozis wife fighted for husband
Modern politics. Same reason why they changed Kynes to a female arbitrarily (while claiming to treat the book as a bible in interviews).
I think Frank really messed up on not fleshing out Chani hence the book readers still saw Paul as a hero after reading Dune which is why Denis wanted to honor the intial intentions of Frank by using a new characterisation of Chani to make Paul seem like an anti-hero before even Dune Messiah is adapted so whilst it's understandable that changing the character is doing too much for book purits-the average audience who probably won't read the book need to understand that Paul isn't a white saviour like they suspected from the first movie which is I think why Denis wanted to change Chani but I agree that it becomes a new thing that would beg the audience who read the book to ask themselves if this is even Dune at all
The interesting aspect of Messiah is the intro which is where I stopped reading once I understood that the movie would be different so I didn't want to ruin my experience of it,is that they say the book readers in the 60s hated Messiah because Paul became a different person almost like a villain and they (surprisingly) blamed Chani for the events that had happened which shocked me so I hope the changes in the events of the movie would cause the audience to blame Paul and not Chani
@@karabokhanyile
What you say is quite weird.
@@karabokhanyile
The only problem is that there was no need to change Chani.
I've been feeling that way about Timothee lately.
@@johnjungkook2721 Yeap same I've felt like this always about Timmy cause he is yet to blow me away(hopefully Dune part 2 will change that) but to be fair I haven't given his best work (CMBYN) a watch so I can't say if it's just my lack of taste lol
With Z I feel like I can't not be biased cause I've loved her since the time I discovered her in Disney's K.C Undercover but I get the criticism of her trying too hard sometimes and I think it's because she gets a lot of criticism and doubts about her meritocracy when it comes to movie stardom so I feel like she feels the need to prove that she belongs sometimes
@@karabokhanyile Yeah, I thought Timothee was the weakest part of the first movie. That character needs a charismatic actor.
