Quick note, the Spice isn't used as fuel for traveling through space, its used to "find the safe paths between the stars." One thing I think these new movies didn't make too clear about the Dune universe is there are no supercomputers or thinking machines or AI. In the Dune universe a war to defeat AI was won thousands of years in the past and AI was banned. Humanity had to find other ways to solve problems we would normally use supercomputers for, such as navigating through space. The Spice, when consumed in large amounts, helps humans operate at the level of a super computer.

*Fun Fact:* The salute Duncan gives to Paul before he dies was actually improvised by Jason Mamoa. It’s the traditional salute that is used when training in Escrima, the Filipino martial art of stick and knife fighting that was used for the film. He learned it from the fight choreographers for Dune Part One and asked the director if he could use it. Dennis Villeneuve loved it so much he had Paul use it in both movies.

    Kristen -
    1) The languages are well-thought-out in the book. The Great Houses usually have their own forms of sign language and a specific spoken language for use in battle (called Battle Language). The book Dune was written in 1965, and science fiction at that time was hardcore about how humans could and should develop themselves. It was less about the tech and hardware, but about how we progress as a species. Herbert really did this in all his novels, both the six Dune novels as well as his novels outside of that universe.
    2) The Lisan-al-Gaib/Mahdi/Kwisatz Haderach prophecies while interconnected, were separate initially. The Kwisatz Haderach was actually early. The program the Bene Gesserit were working on was supposed to have an Atreides daughter (from Jessica) bred to a Harkonnen heir...that pairing was supposed to be the true Kwisatz Haderach. The Lisan-al Gaib/Mahdi was originally just about manipulating the masses in case a Bene Gesserit needed to, their Missionaria Protectiva arm planted similar and different prophecies throughout the galaxy, on many different planets. It was all a form of control. The main mandate of the Bene Gesserit is politics.
    3) Spice, called Melange in the novels, is supposed to have a strong cinnamon smell, and allows the user to expand their consciousness, heal, and extend their life span. If you stop taking it, it is a subtle poison that the withdrawals kill the user. When the Baron is in the dark sludge...that is spice, lots of spice. This is what opens and expands Paul's mind.
    4) Something not covered in the film is that Paul not only has Bene Gesserit training from Jessica, but has been trained in the mental ways of the Mentats. The character of Thufir Hawat is the Atreides mentat, he had the parasol on Arrakis, and the mark on his bottom lip. Thufir trained 3 generations of Atreides, the Old Duke, Leto, and Paul. Paul had the intelligence to be trained as a Mentat, the human computers. There was a war against AI called the Butlerian Jihad, that caused humans to develop themselves more...this was how the Bene Gesserit, the Mentats, and the Spacing Guild came to be. There are no supercomputers for space travel, but navigators who use the spice as a visionary aid to navigate the stars. There are no computers for strategy and business purposes, so Mentats are trained to calculate all sorts of things. All of this is to say with the bloodlines manipulation and Jessica's training from the Bene Geserit and the Mentat training from Thufir...Paul is very special indeed.
    5) Something that is not covered in the movies, but is in the novels...the spice is connected to the sandworms. They might explain how in the third Dune film, based on the second novel Dune Messiah, so I won't say further. In the book, the explanation is given by Chani...because in the novel, Chani is the daughter of Dr. Liet Kynes (who is actually a man in the novel). I am hoping that it was just unsaid in the films, and that Zendaya knew that she was Liet's daughter, and that Sharon Duncan-Brewster knew that Chani was her daughter. They changed how Kynes died in this (which is more badass than the novel) but left that thread hanging.
    6) Leto and Jessica were deeply in love, and that is why Jessica bore Paul and not a daughter. They were unmarried, and she was bound to him as a concubine so any child she bore would be his heir. However, they both knew that Leto needed to be free for a politically advantageous marriage. Jessica would have politically encouraged him with the right match, as a Bene Gesserit.
    7) Leto's pause before adding his seal to the document taking over Arrakis is very much a thing. Everyone in House Atreides knows that this is a trap. Especially Leto. A quote from the book, "The first step in avoiding a trap, is knowing of its existence."
    8) 58:23 - You hit the nail on the head. One of the primary themes of Herbert's novels is the repetition of patterns in history. When you meet Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) in Dune, Part Two, it becomes more obvious. As the novel progresses, most of the chapters begin with an epigraph written by Irulan, who is an historian at heart. The Saudaukar are not just fanatical warriors, war is their religion. This story is about many things...religion, politics, ecology, Jungian psychology & archetypes, metaphysics, history's repeating patterns, spirituality, the messianic impulse, the inherent corruption surrounding power structures, the danger of charismatic leaders, and the debate of choice vs. destiny.
    9) One last thing, the little mouse is important. It is a kangaroo mouse that the Fremen call "muad'dib". It means teacher, muad'dib is wise in the ways of the desert...

Note: when Jessica was interviewing housekeepers and noted that Shadout Mapes had a concealed weapon.... Mapes interrupted her... because Jessica was ABOUT to say "maker of death", but Mapes heard "Maker" and misinterpreted... "The Maker" is what the Fremen call the sandworms, or Shai-Halud. The knife was fashioned from a worm's tooth, also known as a crysknife. Therefore the blade is from a Maker. Mapes heard what she wanted to hear and Jessica let it play out... because just as with "Lisan al Ga'ib", the prophetic religious paranoia was instilled BY the Bene Gesserit is a tool for the coming of the Kwizat Haderak... the boy genetically bred by the manipulation of the Bene Gesserit. (This plan is that Jessica violated by having a son instead of a daughter.)
This is what Mother Gaius meant by "on Arakis, we've done what we could".
One of these prophecies is "he'll know your ways". So Mapes thought Jessica knew the knife was from a sandworm, thus knee the Fremen ways. Just as Liet Kynes noticed Paul's competency with the stilsuit.

The Bene Gesserit are like a nightmare fusion of the Sith and the Catholic Church. A trained Bene Gesserit Sister like Jessica has full control over each muscle in her body through training known as prana-bindu. This allows her to bend the last joint in her little toe while remaining otherwise motionless, bend and contort her body in ways that most would consider impossible, or put a remarkable amount of force behind a physical blow.
And like many imperialistic religious organizations, they used a strategy called the Missionaria Protectiva, a system of sowing implant-legends throughout the known universe with a prophecy pattern for the protection. So if any Bene Gesserit sister were lost on a planet that was affected by this strategy they can manipulate the masses to the own ends.

Also, some of the sisters and reverend mothers reaction speed are so elevated by their training and breeding that they can sometimes move faster than the eye can follow, (this is covered more in later books). Their talents in hand to hand/infighting are considered equal to if not superior to sarduakar

@@IamNinjaOfNinja don’t know if you’ve already read the books, but if not, it makes more sense do to the fact that the sardaukar had started to lose some of their effectiveness due to arrogance from centuries of not being challenged by an opposing military of comparable strength. They had also lost part of their warrior culture due to easier living (compared to barely surviving on their home world). Lastly, both Duncan and Gurney were known among the great houses as some of the most talented/trained fighters in the imperium. Both of them were responsible for training the Atreides military into such a effective force that the Emperor worried they might be able to take on his Sarduakar

Denis Villeneuve fell in love with Dune (which was written almost sixty years ago) as a teenager, and has been planning this film for decades. Before this he made Arrival, Sicario, and Bladerunner 2049 - he's a genius. So is Hans Zimmer. So are all the leading cast.
I read it for the first time when I was in high school in the mid-70s, and have re-read it several times since; it's one of the best stories I've ever read. The author, Frank Herbert, was a genius, too. This was the first great epic of worldbuilding in science fiction.

I don't know if this has already been mentioned or not but The Spice is not how they Fold Space, which is FTL or Faster Than Light speed. That is what's called the Holtzman Engine. What Spice does is it allows the Guild Navigators the ability to navigate a safe path to their destination. Without Spice they could still travel through space, but it's just much more dangerous. One out of every 10 flights would end in disaster.

Great reaction - lovely to watch the two of you sink your teeth into this - I agree Rebecca Ferguson's found something here that no other actor could do, and they lean into that aspect in the sequel, so I hope she cultivates this - re Oscar Isaac, his casting was also a kind of shorthand - see Most Violent Year and that's their vision of Leto - Frank Herbert is dealing w deep structures and historical forces, and IMO the Harkonnen are where civilization is taking us, and the Fremen are a more incipient stage, brimming w potential - and the Bene Gesserit are breeding a Philosopher King per Plato

A couple of non-spoilery things. This is supposed to be the future of humans here on Earth. At some point in our not so distant (comparitively) future, AI and humans wage a war. The humans won and it was decreed there would be no computers that can think like mankind. It's after this war that time started to be recounted. So this takes place 10191 years after that war. The Atreides actually claim they can trace their family origins to ancient Greece. The Harkonnens are supposedly descended from Vikings or Nordic peoples. The spitting as a sign of respect actually makes sense on Arakkis. It's a desert planet where water is extremely scarce. To give up your own water is a noble gesture. Great reaction ladies! I'm always down to watch new people react to this amazing film! Can't wait to watch reactions to part 2 now!

37:24 why doesnt anyone understand the first time? i think the movie actually fails to explain better. These are not "visions", Paul has actual glimpses into possible realities or timelines, he can see what or would or will or has, happen and thats why he is The One, cause he can change the outcomes. He can break time and space, plus use the voice.

I was a bookworm as a kid so anything based on a famous novel is a treat to me. A funny thing I've been noticing. The elite's online are all confused because Dune and David Lynch for that matter was a subject they tended to snob about. And they seemed to do with this first Chapter as well. Now with the second it make them uncool to snub Dune so they all seem to have just paused themselves. Weird stuff yeah. My first profile pic was artwork from the cover of a trade paperback and handle had Atreides in it so I get singled out by those dorks all the time and am pleased to get a break from it. Else I haven't seen the second yet. I have Max and opted to save it and have a party or something.

Spice is also extremely addictive, and spice withdrawal is deadly. So there is no detox/rehab, spice addiction is permanent. On Arrakis it's just naturally in the air and food, that given enough time any newcomers eyes will change, which is the tell tale sign of addiction. So non- locals and wealthy locals who live in the cities imported their food from off world. Having the "eyes of Ibad" is seen by civilized society as being uncivilized. Once Paul and Jessica gained the eyes of Ibad they gained that lifetime of addiction forever tying them to Arrakis. In the book Piter was a spice addict and the Harkonnens had planned to steal a crysknife, so Piter with it and his eyes could infiltrate Fremen sietches.

The Barron is so corpulent that he must use a device that "floats" him around. One more detail that is not explained in the film. The book is so dense in information that it is virtually impossible to squeeze every explanation into film. Denis Villeneuve did a good, while imperfect, job at providing the exposition needed to move the film forward, but he had to leave a lot out to keep the run time acceptable. Definitely a film that is more enjoyable to the book readers, but still mainly comprehensible to those new to the world.
