Jason Momoa is floating because he’s wearing a suspensor belt that lowers his gravity. It’s the same sort of device that allows the Baron Harkonnen to float above his chair.
It's a personal shield based on the Holtzmann Field effect. Holtzmann effect is also used for "suspensors", and for the big FTL travel mode "Folding Space" I think the thought Denis did here is that "why not just use the shields as suspensors as dual purpose? Yeah, that's what I'm expecting (and hoping for). It's the same thing they did in LotR, actually. There's alot of funny and warm moments in the movies that weren't in the books, or not like that. And it works because since there's so much material in the books to adapt, and ESPECIALLY tons of longwinded introspective passages that only consist of the personal thoughts of a character, they can't exactly keep all of that in the movie as is, and constant voiceovers get awkward after a while. They are forced to show, not tell. The moment with Duncan and Paul for example tells us several things without feeling like exposition: - The two are very close and have a very familial relationship, to the point that Paul goes to him for advice (immediately after Duncan gets back from a mission, mind you) and shares very personal things with him like his prophetic dreams - Duncan is a strategist and realist and can't really help Paul when it comes to this esotheric stuff, but he can help in other ways, like making sure his training is going well - He eases the tension with comedy, to take Paul's mind off those things. - Paul is physically a runt and late bloomer (fitting his book description and reinforcing it) It doesn't seem like much on the surface, but there's also stuff I haven't mentioned here. Things like that compound to quickly give us a feel for characters and their relationships without being a clunky copy paste of the source material (especially since the book actually didn't flesh out Paul and Duncan's relationship that much before before, you know, and only really filled us in retroactively in following novels) and to set us up to be emotionally devastated when everything inevitably falls apart later.
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
In Dune, they have gravity belts that allow them to jump around. They also have personal shields that only slow objects like a handheld knife or a very slow projectile can penetrate. In the desert, personal shields are partially inoperable because they attract worms and blowing sand disables them. They have no computer tech/AI because a few thousand years before they had a jihad against "thinking machines." When the personal shields turn red it means its blocking something slow and when it turns blue it means the shield repeled something. Lasguns against personal shields cause an explosion that kills everyone around, including the person shooting the Lasgun. People like Paul, and to a lesser extent the Duke's army are trained in a martial art called "the weirding way."
Having followed Jaby over the years, when I saw the trailer and was expecting Jaby and Achara to react to it, I instantly knew Jaby would be super excited at that spin stunt. 😄
What is very smart is that even if the trailer seems 'spoilery', the real stakes of the DUNE story are not even in this (for the readers of the saga). And Gosh... The score !
The 'simulation' between Paul (Chalamet) and Duncan (Brolin) is an art of fighting proper to the Atreides (Paul's family) and Duncan is a War Master in this. The 'fields' around them are personal shields.:)
the "twitchy" effect in the fighting are the shields, it looked way different in the old david lynch version (as stupid as it may look nowadays id still prefer that tho). They will explain it in the movie.
That version is based on the books but what that version also does its stray away from the books, this Dune by Denis Villeneuve will follow the books without straying away from them
Why would you be waiting for a reaction from two people who don't know the source material? What were you looking for? It would make sense if they were fans already
I found a lot of funny moments in the Dune book. They're not laugh out loud HA-HAs, but they're the type of situational levity that made me snicker. By the way, David Lynch's version of Dune isn't hot garbage, but it's a combination of caricature and bloated self-importance. It's not good. Denis' version looks impressive and much truer to what Herbert wrote. SPOILER The 3D appearing effect while Paul and Gurney were training is due to the characters utilizing energy shields that cause them to look like they're morphing.
the blue forcefield things are shields. They work kinetically - they block fast moving objects like bullets, but a slow blade can penetrate the shield. Also, laser weaponry is forbidden as lasers cause nuclear explosions if they hit shields.
Dune is a series which has 6 book and i already read 5 of them and reading last book before going to movie, when they announced they are going to make the sequel.
I think the 2 moments of comedy are well done and super important. When you're dealing with sci-fi as lore deep as Dune seems to be, it would be really easy to get so caught up in explaining everything to the audience that you forget to give your characters dialogue that actual humans would say, instead of long winded exposition of sci-fi jargon where everything ends up sounding like gibberish
It looks like Paul Muad'dib is striking a pose in the thumbnail like Faora El from Man of Steel did, before Superman swoops in to save the Colonel. Both were holding a dagger.
They did reshoots and probably added comedy. But the training simulator is actually practicing with personal forcefields which resist based on force, so you are fast on defense and slide in slow on attack. But I was also uncertain about Mamoa until I realized his star power, Duncan's personality, and the entirety of the book series.
Regarding why Momoa does that slow high jump...SPOILER: There are suspensor techs in Dune to nullify gravity....that was what Duncan(Momoa) was using when he jumps on the enemy. It can be used to slow your fall or to float like the Baron(Stellan Skarsgard) does in that scene in the trailer.
Don't give a crap about Oscar pedigrees for actors. All I care about is the quality of the movie. First read the books way back in the late 70's. They are complex but worth it.
12:35 Let the gal speak out. She was right with her "maybe". It WAS a gravity suspension device. ;-) If I remember correctly from the book, something with "Holzman field effect" devices, or something. You're basically right you shouldn't have attacked it until you watched it... but... you kinda did. :-p
I think that's the mark of a great director. That you are able to make the special effects integrate seamlessly with the rest of the movie. I don't want to be taken out of it by bad cgi, which is something that happens all to often. I want to believe in what i see on screen. The hulk will forexample never convince me, whatever they do with him. Gollum too, even though his character is great, can never not seem fake to me. The first spider-man with Tobey Maguire, when he was doing his jumping in costume, looked not real to me.
Eh I was starting to type out some hints of the storyline but just see it for yourself, they might make some major changes from the original 2 movies. It remains to be seen if they have the Weirding Modules (enhances your voice into a Sonic Blast) used in the first movie, but looks like we will have the Holtzman Body Shields. Fun fact, since personal shielding was used in battle in the Dune universe, projectile or energy weapons (with the exception of Sonic Weapons) were useless against them. Only slow moving solid objects could penetrate, thus you see a lot of hand to hand combat with bladed weapons.
On the humor side of things, i think it's ok to use it a little bit, especially when your dealings with heavy themes and serious ominous atmosphere. For two good reasons. 1. It gives the audiance some fresh air and kinda permit us to relax a little while watching something with a heavy tension in its core. 2. It kinda flesh out caracters, and dodges the danger of giving them monolitic personae. I mean, sure, the Duke or prince or wathever is a hero/warrior and all that, but if we allowed him to laugh or at least give him some wits to show off, it instanly gives him a more human impression. However, it is indeed something to use with caution, like spice on a plate. Oh...did i say spice? 😯

Merci! That’s probably the nicest thing anyone has ever said bout my French 😊 I took French in high school and spent many holidays in Provence and Monaco when my older sister was living there so had many opportunities to practice then. My French is very rusty now!
Ya'll gave no love to Zendaya at all. Jabs my guy, its a sci-fi world, that kick doesn't look that goofy in the grand scheme of a lot of sci-fi films action, also without spoiling anything there is an in universe reason for the low gravity jump kick. This film is shaping up to be a theatrical feast for the eyes. But there's definitely some comical moments in Bladerunner 2049, so its no surprise that despite how intense and dark this story is there's going to be lighthearted moments with friends and family and some romance.
To me this trailer looks like its going to be about 5-10% faithful to the source material Still looks like it'll be an epic story tho The Sandworms grow huge, I think some can be over 400m long and 40m in diameter plenty big enough to ride on. Atreides use personal shields they are producing the shimmer while they are practicing , its not mentioned even in the books if other houses use them except on vehicles.
imagine describing the concept of 'Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll' to someone from another planet. Much of what you will say, they will likely understand- but without the necessary context, there's even more that they will NOT understand, without having experienced it for themselves. this ridiculous analogy aside, this story is full-on 'Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll' of Science Fiction. i imagine you, and i, and most everyone, is going to absolutely love something from this universe.

I am Here Because of Oscar Issac, I will watch it 'coz of him and the cinematography now
Dennis if he made a marvel movie 😂😂but that aside. I think the balance of humour will be great for some reason.
As a person who read the book, I think that humor is a good choice because the characters relationships are super important
There is a scene where Duncan Idaho got drank and start blabbering shit...and Jason mamoa is 💯 perfect fit for this role...🔥🔥
Zendaya 🔥🔥🔥
Yes Achara, own it girl!!!
Yo Jaby, your tee is super dope. Where’d you get it?
For real question….where did you get that Zelda shirt? And secondly, amazingly epic trailer.
I was waiting for it.. this looks awesome
Only if they could have find someone like Dennis villenuive for Game of thrones and a studio who could provide that scale of budget
This is superb
My suggestion watch in 3d in imax with Dolby Atmos 👍🤯
Does Achara speak French?
‘Cause I’m a native speaker and her saying Denis Villeneuve’s name sounded… well, like it came from a native speaker.
Merci! That’s probably the nicest thing anyone has ever said bout my French 😊 I took French in high school and spent many holidays in Provence and Monaco when my older sister was living there so had many opportunities to practice then. My French is very rusty now!
@@Achara Ahah I just commented the same remark !! Bonjour Achara, comment allez-vous ? :p
Background beats btw 2:20 - 2:35 reminds the trailer music of KGF Chapter 2...
But there's definitely some comical moments in Bladerunner 2049, so its no surprise that despite how intense and dark this story is there's going to be lighthearted moments with friends and family and some romance.
the ksi clip, am i crazy?? yes!! hilarious :))))
Video started out with a fact
Denis villeneuve is a brilliant director . He never fails.
except at the box office...
0:01 yes....yes you are 🔥
The Audio Books are your Key to being caught up, at least the First Book of Dune !!!
To me this trailer looks like its going to be about 5-10% faithful to the source material
Still looks like it'll be an epic story tho
The Sandworms grow huge, I think some can be over 400m long and 40m in diameter plenty big enough to ride on.
I feel like if your a gymnast or something you could definitely pull of the move and still live😂
Y do i hear thanos when he says "I am ready ".
The haha moments are equivalent to a second breakfast
DUNE- Star wars + GOT + Starship Troopers!
❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️
The spiderman no way home is going to be a thriller
The only 3 (or almost 3) words in french in which the double L is read as L: mille, tranquille, ville. Villeneuve
Calm down Jaby, LOTS of gymnasts and figure skaters do that move!
