  • The popular Netflix K-drama Squid Game returns for a second season!
In Squid Game Season 2, Seong Gi-hun returns to the deadly competition, determined to dismantle the organization from within. Teaming up with former detective Hwang Jun-ho, who survived his previous encounter with the games, Gi-hun navigates new alliances and treacherous challenges.
Squid Game Season 2 features a compelling ensemble cast, blending returning characters with new faces. Lee Jung-jae (Deliver Us from Evil, Along with the Gods, The Housemaid) reprises his role as Seong Gi-hun, the determined protagonist seeking to dismantle the deadly games. Lee Byung-hun (I Saw the Devil, The Good, the Bad, the Weird, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) returns as Hwang In-ho, also known as the enigmatic Front Man overseeing the competition. Wi Ha-joon (Midnight, 18 Again, Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum) continues his portrayal of Hwang Jun-ho, the persistent detective investigating the sinister organization. New additions include Yim Si-wan (The Attorney, Strangers from Hell, Run On) as Lee Myeong-gi, a cryptocurrency influencer entangled in the lethal contest, and Kang Ha-neul (Midnight Runners, When the Camellia Blooms, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo) as Dae-ho, a complex participant with a mysterious background. The season also introduces Park Sung-hoon (Psychopath Diary, Into the Ring, My Only One) as Hyun-ju, a character whose casting has sparked discussions, and Jo Yu-ri (Produce 48, IZONE*, Glassy) as Kim Jun-hui, adding depth to the narrative with their performances.

"He's sick. I think he wants to die." See, that's why I loved Gong Yoo's acting here even though I'm not a fan of him. His character was prepared to kill and die at any moment, he's a psycho who'd pull the trigger on his head without hesitation, yet when he realized the last bullet was for him, the look on his face was priceless. He wasn't expecting that yet you knew he was still gonna pull the trigger on himself (and not be stopped by a 3rd party or plot armor whatsoever). I was sure of that in just 1 episode because that's what his acting told me

His dad story is, in my opinion, not a coincidence about how he loved the russian roulette. Remember if he did not shot his father HE will be shot for not respecting the rules. So in a sense, he blinded himself and blamed his father and labeled him like trash. Each time he attempted the shot, even in the end, he did not begged to not be himself a trash. He loved the power of the gun like he said because he could feel his position. Great character and a great episode

To him, this represents his elevation to a higher status, higher than the trash. He said it was as if his existence was acknowledged for the first time. "Trash" was a projection of how he feels about himself through the projection of what he hates and now he can treat them inhumanly and enjoy it.

I think Jaby was right on the money with his interpretation of the scene wirh the recruiter. Don‘t forget: the recruiter had just kindnapped two men who were clearly sent by someone to spy on him. Even if he knew for sure that Gihun sent them there was no way for the recruiter to know who else knows his face now. Therefore his position is compromised and - like the masked guards in season 1 - that was a death sentence in any case. I think that this scene is him going out with a bang (literally).

41:38 I have a different view on this, I think he does this job, kinda subconsciously hating himself, he goes to that park once in a while, to find a reason to see why people are trash, and when they do the same thing every damn time and give up the bread, he is satisfied with the answer that all people are trash. But he is also angry at people for not choosing the bread, because somewhere deep inside he hopes that majority chooses the bread. Kinda like his dad who would, never choose the bread.

1)The ones who chose the lottery or the ones who would press O to continue to the next game gambling their own and everyone else's life for greed
      2) Those who chose the bread are the kinds of people who would press X because they prioritize their own survival and survival for everyone else over greed

I think the recruiter was both deeper and not as deep as people give him credit for. He was playing the same game as Gi-Hun (metaphorically in life and literally) but from a side of privilege. He started on the side of the Squid Game that encourages people to buy in to the violence they’re inflicting on others with less power than them.
The workers have a choice to follow the rules or be killed, just like the players, which isn’t an actual choice, it’s a threat, but the workers get to look at the players and say, “At least I’m not them, so I have control,” and rationalize and justify it to themselves and others to distance themselves from what they’re doing AND the fear that’s the core of it all, which is that they are no different from the players in terms of their lack of control or power within the system.
The recruiter shot his dad to save himself. He taunts homeless people with bread and lottery tickets to reassure himself of the correctness of the worldview he has committed himself to.
He shot himself because Gi-Hun made him come face to face with that truth about himself, that he still had no power or value except what people more powerful than him (who also view him as disposable) gave him. He’s been running from that fact his whole life. The only escape from that prison (as far as he could see) was to die.

Of course maybe he was willing to play, if Gihun died he merely reports this fact back to the front man. Maybe the scene is a setup designed to show how much Gihun has changed, he will find the front man at any cost, no one is to be spared if can end the game.

This was a really good start for Season 2.
It gives you info on what's going on with the main characters that survived the last season and introduces a few new ones.
The boat guy, debt collector boss and guy that is the right hand man of the boss are likeable characters.
That slap guy had a pretty twisted personality and shows just because someone is good looking doesn't mean they're a good person.
I don't know why those two didn't just wait until Gi-hun got there and just continued to follow the slap guy.
The Boss guy didn't seem scared to pull one hand back I think he did it on purpose because he was the one that officiated his marriage.
Boss guy proved how much he cared about the right hand man that works for him with the decision he made, most likely because the other guy was just married and the Boss was probably single.
I can't believe the slap guy did that at the end, but he must have had a messed up life while working for the game people and it warped his mind.
Personally I think the slap guy just got mentally twist working for the game that he needed to reaffirm what he thought about people who make the wrong choice in life.

In my opinion, the thing with the bread and the lottery tickets was that character’s way to prove to himself that it wasn’t his fault those people were signing up to go to the games, it was their choice. Always their choice. And it was the writer’s way to lay the groundwork so his decision to kill himself in the end would make complete sense. That scene showed that he did feel a certain amount of guilt, which is why he did the whole thing with the bread and the tickets a hundred times over. Because, think about it, who was that for? It was for himself! He needed to rationalize his actions so he felt less guilt. It also showed how unbalanced he was, which you could see by the way he stomped on the bread like a mad man.
Some might think he simply killed himself in the end because he respected the rules of the game, but I disagree. Even if that’s true, it’s only a small part of the reason in my opinion. If it was just about the game he wouldn’t have used the gun on himself once in front of those two gangster guys. He didn’t turn the gun on himself and pull the trigger in the end just to respect the game, no way. I truly think he was losing it, meaning losing his mind, and it was because of his guilt. I mean, why did he even tell the story about killing his dad? Who needed to know? No one! But he needed to let it out!
So the bread and lottery thing was the characters attempt to rationalize his actions so he could ward off responsibility and the writers way to set the scene for his decision to pull the trigger on himself at the end.

I think with the recruiter, I believe his family was in debt but his dad would rather gamble in life rather than taking care of the family. The father would not be in the games unless he was in serious debt. It sounds really personal when the recruiter told the homeless that this was your fault for not choosing the bread. So the recruiter is taking out his rage or getting off from messing with the homeless, wishing what he could of done with his own father.

yes, just with anything in life, there are always exceptions. however, you have to agree that there are certain patterns or ways things play out according to statistics. that's why profiling is a legitimate thing and it does work more than half the time.
yeah, generalizing is never good but there is indeed some truth to it. tis why some stereotypes although insulting are unfortunately somewhat true, to the point people just accept them.
with homelessness, it can in fact happen to anyone BUT if you drill down, many people (just barely over 50/50) who end up there unfortunately do share certain behaviors, mindsets, or character attributes in common that would lead them there. just certain people have certain tendencies that would cause them to make certain life decisions that would be seen by the majority as poor decisions and end up in unfortunate situations. that's just how things are and human nature

Your discussion about Goon Yoo's character as the recruiter is very interesting. This is my take: The bread vs. lottery game is more about affirmation of his personal value system. He's been conditioned over the years literally as the garbage collector of human trash. His little gambit in the park is a way to re-affirm his doctrine that human nature is trash when given free will, in form of a game in his case. The tenet of the game rules has become the measure for living. You live based on your choice and its consequences. Because the premises of this belief system is so extreme, he goes back to the park with the bread and lottery tickets to repeatedly prop up this absurd ideology. This also contributes to his eventual decision to take his own life when losing in the Russian Roulette game at the end of the episode.

It's really fascinating to see different people have different interpretations of the same scenes, so here's my two cents. I interpreted the end of the rock paper scissors scene as the boss being unable to choose. When you're forced to choose between saving yourself or the guy who's like a little brother to you, it's nearly impossible to choose in the heat of the moment, so he just took too long and lost by default. If he had confidently chosen to save the other guy, he would've just left his paper hand out and withdrawn the scissors. The fact that he didn't move meant that he hesitated.
As for the recruiter, I don't think he was mad at the world or at his father. That's a bit too forgiving of an excuse and paints him as an unfortunate victim. As he said, he got used to burning bodies and got through it by telling himself that they were trash. When you tell yourself that over and over for years, you start to really believe it, so naturally he completely lost his sense of empathy (if he had that much to begin with). He just stopped seeing them as human beings, so he wouldn't feel any guilt. And when one of those pieces of trash just so happened to be his father, he'd stopped caring at that point. He wouldn't see his father as a human being whom he once loved but as a piece of trash to be disposed of.

From what i recall, i dont think the creator had an idea for the 2nd season at the time which is why it took a while. He didnt want to rush a 2nd season. Most k dramas end with one season and thats pretty much it. Its only been recently that kdramas have gotten more than one season and that seems to be more of a western tv show model. Because even the k dramas that i know of that are exclusive to korean networks like KBS, MBC JTBC, and SBS don't have multiple seasons. Its only the netflix, hulu, disney+ ones that encourage multiple seasons.
The only k drama that has multiple seasons (and other people can comment about other ones they know) is Dr. Romantic which currently has 3 seasons but they are more like spin-off seasons due to the changing of the casts aside from the main main doctor character
