      What is surprising is that they haven't massively "modernized" it. The movie still has the central character as male and it's definitely not been feminized in character. I don't think it's a coincidence that all sci Fi movies that retain a male centeric theme do extremely well, Sci Fi is enjoyed mostly by men, and women too are attracted by dominant male characters.

    Adding to the activity of Chani's character makes sense for reasons other than box office---it is a limitation of the novel that almost all of the reader's perspective is through Paul. When Herbert suddenly speed-runs through the war he took so long to carefully set up, it really FEELS like it's being rushed.

      Building on Romance with Chani now is prep work over him agonising not to go through Golden Path if it meant Channi dieng. It is a dense book and alot of new polts and characters and even factions come up. So it's better place to establish their romantic connection here and just rely on it as it goes further.

      @@pofruin Dune Messiah doesn’t really go fully into the romance of Paul and Chani. Not sure why you think that. Yes there are elements of their love and Pauls visions of Chani’s death and the birth of a child. Because Paul doesn’t see both children being born in his visions. Most of Dune Messiah is about Paul and Hayt (aka Duncan Idaho). Paul still doesn’t fully understand the golden path. That’s made clear in Children of Dune by Leto II.

    I still think a major gripe I have with the two movies now is that the action scenes get cut short SO BAD. Its an epic sci fi movie without great and grand action scenes. It sets it up extremely well, but it ends just like that and things escalate with zero resistance

    • @willis936
      @willis936 6 месяцев назад

      That was the point. Raban was an ineffectual puppy. You expect him to be a big bad villain, but he's just a scared weakling unceremoniously put down. There was never any threat to the motivated Fremen. You fall in love with Paul / his cause, but by the end you can see where he is headed. He has power and has choice and he chooses to massacre. The audience cheered, but they're supposed to be sad. Chani is like the audience.
      In the books they give a good martyr / machiavellian justification for the jihad (stagnation, death of the species, million year torture, etc). In the movies all you have is "kill billions for revenge and power".

    I’ve yet to read Dune: Messiah, but from what I’ve seen fans of the books say that if the film series gets through that second book it more or less completes the Paul saga and would be a worthy end of a trilogy.
    The other novels apparently take place decades/centuries after the events of those first two books and are very much their own stories.

      Not exactly, Children Of Dune is set around 15 years after Dune Messiah so not to far into the future and does contain familiar faces but it does setup the next 2 book saga of dune. This movie sounds really good. Considering the increasingly abysmal state of blockbuster filmmaking for nearly the last 5-8 years, I almost don't want to trust it, but the first Dune was great, so I'm eagerly anticipating what's next.
    You might need to do a bit of research, though, because Dune part 3, what will be an adaptation of Dune Messiah, was confirmed after the positive reception of the first trailer or two for Dune part 2. I guess the news kinda flew under the radar for some reason, perhaps due to the strikes, but I think even Deadline confirmed the rumors late last summer. That preproduction was obviously delayed due to the strikes, but it is happening. It doesn't appear to be Villenueve's next film, however, but he is returning to finish his story after a break doing whatever he does next.

    My issue with Villeneuve is his weird stance against deleted footage. I get not wanting to reintegrate it back into the film because it would break the flow of your movie... what I don't understand is not wanting to show those scenes in extras on a physical media release, especially with something like Dune where there's a fan base that would love to see the things that were shot, but cut (like the dinner scene supposedly in part 1). That said, I do hope the movie does amazingly well, just so we get an adaptation of Dune Messiah. My end goal would really be to see them eventually film "God Emperor of Dune", but I'm pretty sure that's too weird for most, and at most the Dune film saga will end at "Children of Dune" if they make it. (If not the Scifi Channel Children miniseries which adapted both Messiah and Children was actually really enjoyable).

  • @gorkmusic
    @gorkmusic 6 месяцев назад +3

    I know everyone's gonna disagree but I think the first one is a way better movie. It's better paced and the tension really stems from the mystery.
    I don't think Paul converting everyone needed an hour+ of screentime and the love story was lacking (mostly because of dialogue and editing). There's some great moments but some of the payoffs didn't feel earned to me.
    I think if the movie had spent more time with it's villains, there would be more tension about who will succeed.
    But it became painfully obvious in this one that Paul's victory was inevitable. Austin Butler played a convincing psychopath but I never believed he had any tactical skill to present a real rivalry to Chalamet.
    It's easy to get lost in how visually gorgeous this movie is, but I think the hype will die down in the retrospective years from now.

    @ProuvaireJean 6 месяцев назад

    Just watched it on Imax - which is definitely the format you want to see it in. I really liked Part 1 a lot, but Part 2 is even better.
    I had one major and one medium-sized issue with Part 1 (as well as some trivial quibbles). The major issue is that the movie just ended abruptly half-way through the story. The medium issue is that I think Paul could have used a bit more of a pronounced arc. Paul seemed like a character swept up in events rather than being the character driving the plot. That's kind of the whole point of course, but I think Part 1 could have been written in a way that it felt like a defined chapter in Paul's life, and so a movie in its own right, rather than just the first 2.5 hours of a 5.5 hour epic. If - to spitball an example - Paul had a character arc in Part 1 that more _explicitly_ revolved around his unwillingness to kill, then his taking Jamis's life at the end of Part 1 could have resolved both of my issues.
    Anyway, all this to say that Part 2 had neither of these issues. Paul has a very clear character journey - the destiny that he struggles against, and the story comes to a... if not definitive conclusion, then at least a point where you feel both satisfied and excited about what is (hopefully) yet to come. It also works surprisingly well as a standalone movie. I saw it with a friend who hadn't read the book nor seen Part 1 (though he had seen the Lynch movie 40 years ago) and he was able to pick up the characters and story without problems.
    Technically of course, the movie is magnificent. I can see it cleaning up at the Oscars in those categories, but I hope it does well in some of the big awards as well, including best adapted screenplay, director and picture. Not sure how it'll go in the acting categories but if anyone gets a nom, it'll be Chalamet - I don't think any of the other actors have enough to do earn a nomination... well, maybe Butler might for sheer presence.
    I don't really have any complaints about the movie - I intend to see it a couple more times on the big screen at least, and there's a good chance it'll be my favourite movie of 2024 - but if I had to pick one thing to complain about (and I really don't) then it'd be with the characterisation of Stilgar. I actually loved his nonchalant indifference in Part 1, and his turn to ardent religious fervour felt at odds with that. (It's been about 15 years since I last read the book, so can't recall how the book-Stilgar was characterised.)
    Villeneuve really, really, really needs to make Part 3.

    *There are spoilers in this post*
    The first 3 Dune books are my favorite Sci-fi/Fantasy books as an adult. I only mention that because my bias/expectations are going to be for the books (which are notoriously difficult to adapt due to all of the inner monologue and narrator's philosophizing). I also don't really care for Denis' style. He uses the stop. pan. stop. pan. technique the way Zack Snyder relies on slow motion or JJ Abrams uses lens flares. That really irritated me during Dune Part 1. I was also not a fan of Jessica (a bene gesserit) breaking down in a wet ball outside Paul's trial (less is more. she needed to be stoic, imo). Part 1 moved too slowly, and then it ended too abruptly. But it LOOKED FANTASTIC. Truly, Herbert's fictional galaxy brought to life. I don't have to wonder where the money went in Part 1. Part 2 is more of the same visually. Absolutely astounding visuals. Unfortunately, for me, Part 2 veered off into it's own variant branch of the DCU, if you will.
    *****last chance before spoilers*****
    Denis (forgive me, I cannot reliably spell his last name) sharply narrowed the focus of the movie's theme, and he did this by changing the characters of Stilgar, Chani, and Jessica so that Chani represents the pragmatic "new humanist" fremen opposite the (tragically misguided?) Stilgar who represents the deeply religious "old guard" that are beholden to religious scripture. Jessica represents the bene gesserit wizards of Oz-Dune who secretly steer the mechanisms of faith amongst the fremen to their own ends. The movie really has to change Chani for this dynamic to exist, and it sets up Jessica more as an opponent than ally of Paul. to put it frankly, Chani in the books is as much a "old guard" fremen as Stilgar. what we're seeing from Chani is the book is more an expression of Herbert's overarching theses on religion, power, fundamentalism, group dynamics, etc. I don't like the movie's Chani, but I mostly don't like her for where this leads in the finale. By the finale, she's this betrayed woman whom Paul has dropped like Jason did to Medea. that just ain't how it goes. Chani has very very iconic lines about her relationship to Paul and Irulan's, once Irulan goes over as Paul's wife. it's somewhat unforgivable to rob her of those lines in this movie. if you don't know what i'm talking about, Jessica was a concubine of Leto even though she was the love of his life and mothered his only child. He never married, but she couldn't marry him because he had to be available to marry for political reasons. likewise, Chani cannot be Paul's wife, and he actually does marry Irulan. I can only assume Denis is going to have Chani drop these lines at the start of Messiah, but man. Part 2 - imo - really went FUBAR.
    So you have the Chani thing, which is bad, but not in itself going to break things. but the timeline was sped up quite a bit. Paul's sister is still in the womb by the time he conquers arakkeen. the girl is like 5 or 8 or something in the books. why does this bother me? well in addition to eliminating 5+ years of characterization and gestation of Paul from runaway prince to Fremen messiah, there's a line in the movie where the head reverend mother accuses paul of being an abomination. he's not an abomination. he's a product of the eugenics programs that the bene gesserit have been working on for generations (millennia?). the abomination is the child (still in the Jessica's womb) who was exposed the the presciensce that only reverend mothers of the bene gesserit take in the final stage of their "communion." my point is calling Paul the abomination is nonsensical. it's another iconic line, this time kept, but rendered nonsensical. the only thing remotely unusual about Paul is that he was realized a generation earlier than the bene gesserit had planned (due to the massive spice exposure, iirc).
    lastly, and this is where the movie jumps the shark (for me!), is that absence of the spacing guild at climax/resolution of the film. control the spice = control the space guild. control the spacing guild = control the empire. the emperors rule only insofar as the spacing guild allows them to. the movie ends with all the Fremen going up into space ships to do battle with all the other houses' armies coming out of dune orbit. no, bro. just...no. the fremen are badass warriors, but they cannot win that fight. full stop. they win by holding the spice hostage with their nukes. they win because the spacing guild calls off the houses (remember: w/o spacing guild, there is no empire). this is all in Dune. not Messiah. not Children of Dune. ending the movie the way this ended is just...eesh. iunno man. I get you want to keep telling stories and stuff, but it's like SW without actually dropping the torpedoes into the Death Star's exhaust system. they stopped after Luke rescured Leia or something. finish the movie, dude.
