- Super Saiyan 3's purpose in Dragon Ball Z is completely misunderstood! This video was inspired by @CarthusDojo who recently made a video discussing why they dont like SSJ3, so in this video I'm going to discuss why I actually DO like it for the role in plays in the overall narrative of the Buu saga and pivotol part it plays both in Goku's characterization, but also character arc.

In Spain's dub, that's basically its name. Ssj is "super warrior", ssj 2 is "hyper warrior" and ssj 3 is "mega warrior"

Super saiyan 3 was the peak of power, and to me, represents what Goku is capable of when he truly gets to be him.
A symbol of hard work and dedication.
Goku is a master of all marital arts, A warrior who has overcome so many walls throughout his lifetime. And Super saiyan 3 is the embodiment of Goku being him. Breaking limitations, showing that still has the strength to pull through, and in times, the one who can shoulder the burdens of his home. But he never wants to be the only one to grow. Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, Piccolo, Vegeta, And even frieza to an extent, He kept them around because "If you're strong, then I can only imagine how strong I can be!" He's always wanted to have rivals or friends who help him grow to be better.
Ssj3 shows that yes, Goku can be the hero, but he doesn't want to be, or at least, not the only one.
The look, the prowess, the strength. It came from HIM wanting to be stronger. HIM and Him alone. And he wants others to do the same.

@@edogawaconan945 It was an issue when he was dead. All he said is it was EVEN MORE taxing in his alive body. In fact, the way it drained his time was an indicator of how poor the power utilisation was. Goku was sweating heavily after using it briefly against buu. He KNEW in his dead body it was taxing. What surprised him is that he couldn’t recharge. In fact if you remember, he said “I would usually have recharged by now”. Showing that when he used it before, he ran into the stamina drain, but with time he could recharge. So all the evidence is there to tell you that he experienced that drain in his dead body as well
@@mattys6106 this is just sad...... he literally said right after going back to the lookout to piccolo that the ssj3 first transformation drain his time on living world. Once he turn ssj3 his time got cut more than half. Yes he was shown taxing but for different reasons.
And then goku essentially becomes the sole protector in GT immediately after
Against all three major villains in GT it was a collaborative effort to beat them. No Uub or Kibito Kai = Baby kills everyone. No Android 18 = Super 17 wins. No Vegeta = absolutely no way to beat Omega Shenron.
@@jamainegardner4193Mostly minor contributions. Piccolo stalled for time during the namek arc so that Goku could get the spirit bomb, yet in universe the characters still give goku all the credit as the sole protector. It's the same for a lot of the show. The other characters will contribute but it's still mostly Goku. It's the same for a good chunk of GT. Especially the first arc .

Let's also remember that if Goku hadn't shown off SSJ3, then Goten and Trunks wouldn't have learned to fuse. They were so upset with Goku because they thought he was so weak that he let Vegeta and Gohan die. Why should they listen to him? There's also a point to be made that Goku told Vegeta that he didn't know what SSJ3 would do to his time on Earth, and so he left it as an absolute last resort. By the time he used it, he still had about 18 hours or so on Earth. That decreaed to 30 minutes after a fight that couldn't have been more than 3 minutes. Even if Goku had used it against Vegeta and beat him, would it have mattered? They were going to talk about it and waste some time. He'll one-shot Vegeta and then turn the form off and be exhausted afterwards, just like the fight with fat Buu, and Gohan would have still had to fight Dabura. Dabura is perfectly capable of a prolonged fight against Gohan. Maybe even enough to bring Buu back, but now with no Goku and no one who can tell them about fusion.

I don’t even think he would need to hit majin vegeta, the power gap alone would shatter his pride. Which again, would have eliminated the need for goku at all, as Vegeta and Gohan could fight with goku, retreat with instant transmission, goku could teach vegeta and gohan the fusion dance, and woah, buu is cooked. I’m sorry but that just doesn’t work.
That being said, Goku Vs Vegeta was the main reason buu was even revived, and if it ended before it started then Goku and Vegeta could intervene. Vegeta was clearly confident he could take Dabura and majin boosted vegeta has a way better shot as well. Buu wouldn’t even need to wake up.
Not the biggest fan of the form myself, but it has really cool moments in the movies and the form looks really cool. 🔥🔥🔥
This was a much needed video. All I’ve been seeing for years videos, comments, and social media posts ripping SSJ3, calling it overrated, useless, and acting like it’s the most popular form, even tho I never see it get ANY love anymore (so it feels more like it’s one of the most hated forms, rather than the most loved), so THANK YOU for actually giving it some love for once.
The majority of the DB community has been giving it way too much hate lately, all while acting like they’re in the minority in hating on it.
People hate on it because its arguably the second most mid transformation in the grand scheme of things. I still believe blue is by far the most annoying form. SSJ3 is cool. It is a really cool form. That is it. You either like if for it being cool or hate it for not living up to the build up of the forms before it. I think its cooler than SSJ2 but narratively speaking SSJ2 moments hit me in the guy from Gohan Vs Cell to Majin Vegeta bleeding his heart out on why he let himself be controlled. SSJ3 has nothing like that anywhere in DBZ.

By the way, lemme add some points.
- When Goku said he couldn’t beat Buu when he was on Earth, he wasn’t actually lying about not being able to beat Buu. Remember after he reverted to Base, he only had like 30 minutes left on Earth so if anything it’s a good thing Goku stopped fighting when he did. Also Goku didn’t kill Fat Buu because if he did, the Z Fighters wouldn’t be nearly as motivated to be stronger, or in this case, Goten and Trunks.
- SS3 wasn’t even Character assignation, Goku was already dishonest about passing the torch during the Cell Saga in which him making a bet like that on Gohan while it worked, it was still a big gamble. Also Carthu forgets Goku uses the form when he was dead so he couldn’t find the energy flaws until after he was alive. Also there’s also the fact Goku hardly learns from his mistakes for anyone who says “He should’ve learned not to gamble the earth on the next generation”.

I love ssj3, it’s my favorite form. But I gotta disagree on this. Goku was still lying about not being able to beat Buu. That means he was unable too. Him trying to reserve energy has nothing to do with that. We know he could have beaten Buu, but chose not to. And Goku gambling on Gohan was different. Goku couldn’t beat Cell at all. Gohan was literally the only hope he had. With this, he didn’t have to. But went about it anyways. I get wanting to give the next generation some determination. But this was way too risky. And he didn’t really show this kind of goal until after the Vegeta fight. He was portrayed as serious until then.
@@shadowsansvii8715 Goku said that when he was dead and on Earth, and what do you mean the energy reserve has nothing to do with it? It’s literally the reason he went back to Otherworld so early as his time was literally cut to 3 minutes after a few minutes of fighting, so Goku was right when he said he hid SS3 from Vegeta for that reason. Even if Goku killed Buu, it wouldn’t do anything for the Earth nor motivate anyone so that’s that.
@@shadowsansvii8715 okay this is a blatant lie, even if goku said "he couldve beaten majin buu" with ssj3, i dont agree with his statement; he also said he could easily defeat kid buu in ssj3, but the thing is he couldnt at all. Majin buu is simply impossible to kill within conventional means, and goku literally doesnt have the requirements of killing buu anyway.
another thing to add is kid buu was playing with ssj3 goku like a toy.

are we gonna ignore that goku lied about never coming back to earth? Goku was not serious at all the entire arc until certain situations arise, and Goku continuously acted serious even after ssj3 came out.

For me super saiyan 3 lacks is because of lack of buildup and mystery,imagine talking away every reference made of super saiyan before its first appearance,amd goku just turned into it without any building up to it
Buildup isn't need to make a form good, it just needs to make sense and have narrative purpose and ssj3 has just that.

Good take, but still Goku didn't finish the job when he had the chance. Also the whole Vegeta fight was basically Goku gassing him up just to show later Vegeta had no shot. From a narrative point it's still terrible because it's trying to show something that's already been shown like every arc. Logically it would've been better if Goku just finished the job then and there as he only had a days worth regardless if he burnt out faster or not.
Then there's also the point of ss3 being inefficient. But that's just my opinion as I think ss3 would've had a better showing if Goku ended the fight with him then disappearing back to other world showing that. Goku won't always be the shining hero everyone needs and that other will have to take a stand and improve. Instead of Goku switching up what he's saying every three pages in the arc just to show what didn't need to be shown again.

The problem with SSj3 is that the writers never allow it to win. Toriyama didn't want a repeat of Freeza and Cell where the new Super Saiyan form trashed them, so he added the ki leak downside at the last minute in the Kid Buu fight to give himself time to think of a better ending, trashing SSj3 in the process. It's an objectively very useful form, but it's never allowed to show its strengths.
GT never gave it a proper showing, sidelining it so Super Saiyan 4 can happen. And then we have the Super era, where SSj3 gets trashed to show how strong Beerus is and then completely outmoded by God and then Blue and then Blue Kaioken and then UI Sign and then MUI and then et cetera, et cetera. Personally, I would've had Goku transform into SSj3 after losing the God form in Battle of Gods to at least give the form some respect.
I hope that SSJ3 at least gets used more often by Goten & Trunks

I don't really like how he didn't use it from the get go but I understand that it was to find a suitable new protector, but not using it after Gohan supposedly died and Vegeta's sacrifice was not right. The risk at the time was already too high and he was willing to let basically everybody die so he could try to see if the kids were suitable successors? Was Goku really willing to give Goten, Trunks and the earthling's lifes up just to see if it all worked out? I don't really think it fits Goku's character that well.

I think the biggest problem with it comes down to Carthu's point on it being character regression for Goku when he fights Majin Vegeta. I think a way it could have worked better would be if Goku achieved SS3 for the first time while fighting Buu, he could say something to Babidi to the effect of "Even though Super Saiyan 2 is powerful, King Kai's training has shown me that there is something even further beyond it, but I've never gotten to it, until now."
That’s sounds like a good idea, it gets around goku hiding ssj3 for no reason while also explaining the stamina problems because he just unlocked the form and its immense power.
The issue is the form doesn’t fit Goku. Goku is all about not wanting drain. He doesn’t want to put power over stamina. That’s the point of grade 2 and 3 that Carthu said. This kind of a crash out form at TSOsage put it doesn’t fit the character of Goku.

something you didnt go over in the video but i think really should be said is that without ssj3 everyone IS DEAD. ssj3 acts as a way to close the gap between certain characters so that they dont instantly get destroyed and keeps the plot advancing. for example, if goku doesnt use ssj3 against fat buu, the audience doesnt have a grasp on how strong the form is; being able to make a person who would otherwise lose a fight by a wide margin somehow close the gap enough to not only hold one's own in a fight but also make them stronger than the big bad. Furthermore, if goku doesnt use ssj3, gotenks doesnt learn it and this ultimately leads to gotenks lasting a maximum of ten minutes against buu (if hes generous). remember, gotenks was getting man handled by fat buu and here we have him about to go up against an even stronger version of buu? there would be no way a ssj1 gotenks could compete. he needs something to close that gap or else he just loses and buu destroys the earth. however, lets say he does somehow survive untill gohan reaches earth and the plot goes on as it does normally. what happens when goku and vegeta face off against kid buu? they just die, plain and simple. We saw how badly vegeta was getting treated in ssj2. Vegeta and goku in ssj2 are relatively the same level of strength. Once again, there is no way goku puts up a fight long enough in ssj2 for buu to not get bored and just kill everyone.

Carthu also mentioned in his video if you take out SSJ3 you would change up how strong people get a bit to still make it work. Goku pushing SSJ2 to its limit and working to stall Buu vs trying to beat him since he know he cant win head on after what happened to Vegeta. The form isn't required to get that same result which is the problem. Kid Buu is also weaker than Super Buu so you dont exactly need SSJ3 there either. (Now if you want to argue about kid buu vs super buu I am not doing that. If you're a dragon ball fan that still believes kid buu is stronger than super buu then you dont read the material like most fans.)

Lonks just got back from watch totally not marks buu saga analysis and man he described something about ssj3 that was not even a thought to me. Remember when the kids were questionable about gokus strength. And we’re downplaying him as a master. Well when Goku turned Ssj3 they immediately became listeners. Not just that mark explains just how well ssj3 plays a role in the buu arc. I think you should watch his buu saga analysis is because man this dude is the real deal when it comes to reading.
I like how you explained the story significance of Super Saiyan 3 for Goku and the main moral theme of the Buu saga. No one person can save the whole world, but everyone.
The argument that *"The Buu Saga can work without SSJ3"* doesn't work when you consider that Ultimate Gohan & especially the Concept of Fusions fall under the same category.
Ultimate Gohan accomplishes nothing in the end & that goes double for Fusion. (Vegito could've just killed Super Buu & used the Dragon Balls to fix things like they always do, but chose to prolong an already dragged out Saga even more because reasons)
Yet nobody looks at *either* of those things the same way as SSJ3
The reason those are valued is because they didnt become irrelevant once their own arc ended literally both super and GT make ssj3 worthless after its used once plus fusion IS needed without it no one on earth would have a chance to fight buu at all once he goes past being fat buu

Ssj3 is goated
Goku whipping this thing out for the first time was epic, plus the detail where he acted so confident with it for that fight but as soon as he was able to he dropped it and was drenched in sweat. It's a transformation he had to use wisely and it had actual drawbacks unlike the rest of his forms (I hardly count grade 3 super saiyan, it's a meme form at this point lol.) And of course Buu's "You look scary, but Buu not scared." tied it all together nicely.

While I wish it weren’t so, Carthu is right about ssj3 not being necessary. Just prop up ssj2 like ssj in the Cell Games. However, the ssj3 transformation just looks really cool! Admittedly I didn’t like it very much when first viewing it, but like others I grew to liking it. It also more visibly adds to the increase of outrageous power Goku wields, allowing viewers to get a better grasp of the fact that no one is as strong as he is(aside from mystic Gohan and a few others after ssj3’s first appearance).Could ssj3 be taken out? Yes and the show would chug along just fine, but it also works well with the show too. Not to mention the hype it adds for marketing, I think it was a good decision all in all, maybe an even better one. I mean all these years later and the number of people liking it isn’t shrinking.
I agree with all of Carthus' points in the video. I think SSJ3, even though it’s my favorite transformation, is very flawed and I can understand why people don't like it. However, the one thing that I don't agree with is the title. “SSJ3 is overrated.” and I’d like to say, no it’s not. In fact, it's the most hated transformation besides SSB. Many people make fun of the transformation, none of the appearances Super Saiyan 3 is in does anything good for the series, (Not even the movies, since, Goku loses to Janemba in Fusion Reborn and ruins a character moment with trunks in Wrath of the Dragon.), as well as the fact that the transformation is associated with one of the worst characters from Z, most fan animations that I watch have super saiyan 3 lose in the majority of the fights that i've seen and even call it useless. So no, I don't think it's overrated

It's honestly not overrated, it's mad underrated to be honest, I don't think I've ever seen it get 'Overrated', in my opinion something like Mastered Ultra Instinct or Ssj4 is more overrated

Not that I don't like those two, because I like them both, I just feel that in general they are both much more popular than Ssj3, which makes them more likely to be 'Overrated', in my opinion, since there's more people that enjoy those forms in general (and I would say those two power ups have their own problems, but that doesn't necessarily make the overrated for just that alone)

SS3 is honestly my favorite transformation! Very underused after the buu arc 😢
Intteresting video. I think All the ss3 hate comes from a few reasons.
1: its never beaten a saga's main antagonist (aside from the movies)
2: its inefficiency is particular problematic compared to other transformations (especially the ones that come after)
3: other designs look a lot cooler and are stronger since the story continued; so theres no reason to ever use it again (ui, ss4 etc)
If the series ends at z, ss3 works a lot better. Its basically shat on now due to dbz power creep 😅

My biggest issue with Carthu's was his point on how SSJ3 drained energy, which was the whole point he made Grade 4 after seeing grade 2-3. But Goku literally had no idea it was so bad, it is pointed out in the fight with Kid Buu that it should have taken him a minute to fully charge his power and kill Buu.
Unlike Super Saiyan Grade 3, where Trunks was un-aware of the weaknesses, Goku had no way of knowing the energy drain was as bad as it was. To add ontop of this, it's not even Super Saiyan 3's fault, Goku tell's Vegeta that if he wasn't planing to give Vegeta a turn he could have taken Buu out in one blast, and Vegeta even agrees to this.
If Goku was aware that it had energy drain on his dead body of all things and then finding out how bad it was when said dead body was given essentially 24 hours of being a somewhat "living" body then two and two could of easily been put together there. The fact it was somewhat taxing on a dead body is red flag enough.
Granted he had no way of knowing how bad but if its taking energy from my corpse then I am not trusting it much.
Now as far as giving vegeta a turn >.> I hate that part so fucking much. If you had intent to give him a turn then let the man go first. Wasnt Goku the one who always told people who fought the main villain that he wont be mad if they get a dub?

I might disagree with the title (SSB imo is the most underrated form), but yeah SSJ3 isn't as bad as what people think
The issues of the Buu Saga doesn't revolve around SSJ3, and while I do agree that the threat of Buu should've ended in better ways (Vegeta's final atonement, Gohan should've finished the fucking job and should've learned his mistake after cell), I don't think that SSJ3 is the one that really messes up the Buu Saga if at all. If anything, SSJ3 actually helped show us that Goten and Trunks aren't the protectors of earth given their childish nature even with that power, and Goku made a IN character mistake regarding his mistakes.
also, no ssj3 doesn't assasinate gokus character (i saw carthus point and i just respectfully disagree with it lol). also goku has ommited the truth before from people (gohan for instance not knowing the plan of goku giving cell a senzu bean)

I remember Totally Not Mark's buu saga review where he mentions that since the kids have never seen Goku before and only heard stories about him, when they met him they weren't too impressed with him. It wasn't until Goku turned Ssj3 where they changed their minds and Goku is as amazing as the stories they heard said he was

The argument that the form is bad in a storytelling sense because he never wins with it is flawed. It's like saying everyone on Namek is useless because they didn't defeat Frieza. Only Krillin was necessary for Goku to transform into a Super Saiyan.
The best moments in Dragon Ball come from things that didn't result in a win, like Kaioken and the Spirit Bomb (before the Buu saga), for example.

In retrospect it is very easy to see how Ssj3 is very lackluster, but thematically, it’s nearly perfect to be honest. It still is a bit clunky in how it appeared, made Goku look like a huge liar in saying he can’t beat Buu, and didn’t immediately stop Vegeta when he could’ve, but realistically, it’s because the form literally didn’t exist in Toriyama’s mind until its debut chapter, it could’ve been done way better if it was planned. And at the very least, as you’ve said, the former of being a liar can be seen as Goku trying to find his successor instead of saving the day yet again. It’s flawed and sorta irresponsible in a way, but it was a genuine gamble on his part, especially when he was only back for a day as far as he knew. He still cares for the earth and would want to help, but he’s doing what he thinks is best, and honestly has been the most mature he’s been, which makes sense as for the longest time, this was his last stage of development, before ultimately learning about teamwork.
As for the actual form itself, it sorta _is_ the “worst” form of them all, even Blue I’d actually argue works better, exclusively in the manga though lol. But regardless I don’t think Ssj3 was supposed to be that effective anyway. It’s not supposed to be the final solution, and as Goku states, he doesn’t have a proper grasp at it. It’s basically an experimental form. It’s not like he really intended for it to be the _best_ power, the strongest perhaps, but he _knew_ it wasn’t efficient. He just wanted to push himself to the absolute limit, in which he did with Ssj3. That’s why I feel like the form’s basically the culmination of his character, at least a part of it: to train and self improve, because you never know what you might discover. This is what Goku discovered. Is it reliable? Not really, but it wasn’t intended to, it’s just Goku pushing himself as hard as he could, not for efficiency, but just because he _can._ That I think makes for a really cool form
That ending is nice and all... but to get to it Gohan had to get hoed by the plot. Twice, actually. Once where he was basically orange vegeta against Super Buu, and again where they just could've wished for Gohan to teleport to Kid Buu and just defeat him.

As someone who had a take on SSJ3 on Carthu's video, this feels like it was a personal attack.
I see what you’re trying to say but it doesn’t really debunk Carthu at all. You can say that ssj3 represents restraint for Goku. But that doesn’t fix the problem. Goku chose to endanger everyone for the chance that he could find the perfect successor. And this is hidden until after ssj3 is even revealed. It also doesn’t make sense for Goku, a guy all about not wanting drain and perfecting forms. Goku showing restraints would not be needed for the arc to function. Let him go all out on Vegeta if he didn’t have 3. He doesn’t need restraint against Buu. But I respect the effort and I do agree that it can represent restraint.
N my opinion yes goku against fat buu would've had a lower fighting chance but if things started to get bad goku could have had just teleported away and who knows maybe instead of the spirit bomb we could have gotten gogeta to fight kid buu

You... you didn't prove why SS3 was required at all. You just stated why Goku should be respected in the Buu arc. Nothing at all that you said requires SS3 over Goku just being a much stronger SS2. I feel like you completely missed the entire point of the argument. The Form doesn't matter. Goku can be stronger and be everything you said he was without a new form. THAT was the point.

Ssj3 can be the most powerful non god kii saiyan form if you mastered it. They mastered blue which is a more drained than ssj3.
Except that according to Toriyama, in the Neko Majin Manga it is shown that Goku could use a sort of "Perfect" SSJ1 that was More Powerful that the later forms (kinda similar to that "Saiyan Beyond God" form that was used in Resurrection F)
