Why are the Ukip (UK Independence party) surging in the polls? John Harris visits Peterborough, where economic insecurity is fuelling anti-immigration sentiment. He catches Yvette Cooper, the shadow home secretary, promoting Labour's new stance on immigration. But in nearby Ramsey -- the only town in Britain where Ukip controls the local council -- different factors are influencing voters.
I am an immigrant(russian) and I am very sorry to hear that the situation has become such a big problem, but why should I leave this country? I'm not propoganding my religion or my culture, I'm not sitting on benefits, I'm not creating any disorders, I haven't committed any crimes, I just came hear to study, what's wrong with that?
Or if i will go to Slovakia and settle there, next door to Slovakian citizen, and will bring there all my relatives with lousy cloud children, i think he will be happy

And to be clear; I`am not immigrants lover and I`am rally against benefit immigration. But if U talking about immigration please don`t forget about Abu Qatada nationality. Polish? Who killed people in the bus 7 July 2005 in London. Poles? People from Poland are easy target, even if they do not bringing with them hate religion. And what about Germans, Frenchs or Italians which living here? And finnaly; what about 2 millions Brits in Spain? Many of them is living on the public Spanish pot.
You did not address the issue at all. It doesn't matter what someone thinks is needed. How is it a free market when you ban the import of labor? What you are describing looks more like centrally-planned economy. You want the government to dictate then the businesses need something and when they can get it. It might be good, might not be good but this is not the issue at all. The issue is that you're calling for both a free marked and a centrally-planed economy in one sentence.

How is it free when it's controlled by government permits based on what someone in the government thinks is good for you? Do you even understand what a free market is? You won't get a reasoned reply on this one. I asked this on another thread and never got a single coherent response: the only reply I did get was one full of emotional platitudes. Also, they keep confusing multi-racial - a society made up of different races - with multicultural - a society without a defined set of customs and laws based on a set of commonly shared beliefs that the vast majority take for granted as they have been established over centuries.
You are so Naive to think we have spent billions of pounds to 'free' the Afghanistan people. Nothing is for free in almost every regard when it comes to Capitalism - jot it down and remember it throughout life (that includes war.. read: 'profit').
Everyone in the UK pays tax. I myself don't drink or smoke and think that people who smoke or drink in front of their children are wrong however its paid for.

I've counted back and estimate I've been passed over for a Pole roughly 16 times. Heart breaking when you're asked constantly why you haven't got a job and are you sending CVs off enough.
Add to that a 2 year waiting list for a house or a flat when they can get one within 24 hours and the tension mounts. Can't wait for the Romanians and Bulgarians to get here. Oh joy! smh
I'm now looking for work in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. I kid you not! More chance of a job there for a Brit than here at home!

I have so many comments about this blatant infuriating propaganda that all I'm gong to say is - I hate The Guardian.
Well it is based off the idea that a large influx of new people into a place will create a more dynamic and productive society due to the influx of new ideas and a large workforce of young ambitious people (see Ancient Rome, Constantinople, Late 19th-early 20th Century USA). Whether that idea is still working in modern Britain however is very much open to debate. I lean more towards the idea that it is not working, I assume you do as well?
