They had an easy enough route to it via first adding characters from the animated Hercules (Hades would have been epic!) and having that introduce the idea of gods. Gods give us Odin and Thor and from there it's straight to Marvel. Or, Henry, as the author, accidentally leaves a comic book inside one of the "official" author books and they bleed through into Storybrook.

Looking back, It's kind of impressive the creators of the show managed to NOT have inadvertent incest by retconning some characters relationship over time. They must have had a huge mural to connect the relationship of everyone and avoid that otherwise the Corporate Mouse would come down to smack them.

I've always been amazed that this show managed to keep an actor as high calibre as Robert Freaking Carlyle as a main character for like 8 seasons. Has nobody told him how good he is or something?
I thought the same thing and he has talked about it! Turns out his kids started going to school in Canada because his previous show shot there, and because OUAT shot there too he stayed on the show so he wouldn't relocate his kids. Honestly makes a lot of sense...
Found it hysterical that they made Rumpel and Belle the couple from UP as well! I found it the most frustrating that they redeemed him for the end of season 3, then went right back to the town disliking him and him constantly turning to the dark side again. I was happy with the direction they took him for the final season though. He actually spent that season sticking to a good set of morals.
@@cinnabunny4175 I could, but I'd be lying. They basically wrapped up their love story with the pair moving to these magic falls. There's a montage of their life together, building the same house from the movie, then she dies of old age and he spends the rest of the season trying to destroy the darkness in him so that he can die and joint her. He spends years trying to do this and ends up becoming quite selfless in the process which I appreciate. But yeah, the UP thing is very true
Rumple going back and forth between being good and bad was the most exhausting part of the show. He was a really cool character for the first couple seasons, but I just got SO BORED of him!

I just learned that the actors who played Prince Charming and Snow White fell in love on-set and got married in real life. I don't care WHAT happens on the show, that's my favorite story from it.
You missed the part where they both got divorced/separated from their partners (Snow White was dating, Prince Charming was married) so they could get together. Makes it a little more awkward lol
I respect the OUAT writers they did whatever they wanted and they were as insane and ambitious and unique as possible without any restrictions they had complete creative freedom within their budget and they didn’t care what anyone thought and they had fun with it Edit: for all the seasons
Honestly we need more shoes like once upon a time. Sure it had its dumb story lines and the family connections are more complicated then the Greek mythology family tree. But they put a new twist on so many iconic stories which was honestly quite refreshing.
Regina's whole story is she gets close to being happy and then someone intentionally or accidently ruins her happiness. I know she tries to be good for Henry but like the show never lets her enjoy being happy.
Dude she gaslit Henry for years and still blames others when he gets made about that. She decided not to meet her true love when she had the chance then blames Emma for doing the right thing by saving someones life because Robin can’t/won’t now be with her. A nice chunk of the time it’s her own fault (or at least not anyone else’s) that she’s not happy. Even when it’s not her fault the world doesn’t really own the person who massacred a whole village because she had a bad anything. Like she had bad life but so did half the cast. Though it does get annoying to have constantly rest to an unhappy state but honestly I was never convinced that she had grown as character to a point where she should have a “happy ending “ just the show tossing things at her. She and rumple are the best characters though.
She finally gets to be happy in the finale and season 6. And to be fair she betrays at least one major cast member pretty much every season 1-5 either intentionally or indirectly in her attempts to be better.
" She was over Regina's lap getting a spanking like a naughty little kid. Emma buried her red face when the fourth spank landed and..." Everyone lives happily ever after in fanfiction. :)
Once Upon a Time started strong. The first three seasons were so good. There were three big issues that caused it to go downhill. The first is that they kind of stopped adapting characters and started pulling them directly from the source material, making them less interesting (The Frozen arc was especially bad about this, as all the characters looked and acted one to one exactly like the movie versions). The second is that every new character they introduced HAD to have a previous interaction with one of the main cast. This limited they storytelling of new characters backstories, as well as straining credulity. The third is that the longer it went on, the more and more the series started to contradict its own lore, and the main cast’s backstories and motivations. It made it really hard to follow by the end because nothing made sense anymore based on what we had learned before.
Yeah, that's why they needed to add time travel, dimensional travel, the Hades to bring back the dead, and all of that, cause they simply couldn't fit other characters with new storylines, they literally had to resurrect older ones.
I said It before on the last one, and I will say it again. There is just something so hypnotizing about a completely convoluted mix mash conglomeration of Disney fairytales into an overly complex plot. Like kingdom hearts and this show. I just love em, even with all the nonsense.
Watching OUAT was probably the best decision i've ever made in my nearly three decades of life. It is pure cheese and often so over the top but still has charm. I feel like it has the "you won't believe what happened next" vibe that Riverdale tried to have but failed miserably
That intro scene of Regina getting pimp smacked by a ghost who then possesses Snow White is the most accurate representation of what this show was. That and an early 90’s point and click adventure.
The Evil Queen getting slapped by the ghost of her mother the queen of hearts whilst asking about her sister the wicked witch. The queen of hearts then decides to possess Snow White to talk about how she gave up the wicked witch, its hilarious when you imagine their animated/disney versions in their place.
The first season is really interesting to me, because the story is contained to that one season, and it has a stronger mystery vibe in season 1. You can tell that the writers weren't sure they'd have a second season.
I'll still be surprised and shocked that they okayed a plotline where the Wicked Witch cucks the Evil Queen by getting knocked up by Robin Hood while disguised as the mans dead wife all out of jealousy??
Just finished my third full watch-through today. I remember watching it every week when it first came out. To this day, it's one of my favorite shows. Once you get past cheap cgi and crazy plot lines, you see that this show has amazing messages and a lot of heart. It's a great comfort show to watch when you need an emotional boost :)
Yes. I grew up with The Young and the Restless, Hawaiian TV soap operas, etc.. and they all shared similar tropes. Evil lovers, people coming back from the dead more than once, McGuffins, love triangles, Rumpelstiltskin, I can keep going. 😂😂
I remember it actually managed to end on a pretty good note on the second to last season, only for the final one to just be a hodgepodge mash-up of ideas and story beats from yet more Disney properties (if I remember right, Regina ends up dating the villain from Princess and the Frog) and just goes wholesale into end of days with the final villain they go with. The ending is pretty tepid as a result, even if it's technically a super wholesome feel-good one.
I rewatched this show about a week ago and what shocked me the most was how aggressively sexless it was. I remembered Charming, Snow and Hook to be these insanely hot people to my teenage self, yet here you have sexless pregnancy left and right. I'm not saying the characters should have been screwing, but I've never seen a show for a somewhat older audience go out of its way to avoid sex so strongly
Sex wasn't completely avoided. There's a scene where Emma and Henry get back to Snowing's apartment and then immediately leave again once Emma realizes they had been doing it and needed to clean themselves up.
@@PlagueDragonRat yes. and there's one scene after Regina and the 50 shades guy had done it. But that's two tiny scenes in a show so liked by grown women and teens. It made me wonder if the show has a Christian audience
@@upsetstudios1819 You all seem to forget this a family show on ABC network television primetime in the early 2010's. People just didn't do that kind of stuff on TV shows before 10pm and even if they did, it was limited to cable networks. But it was heavily implied on MULTIPLE occasions. I mean, there were even two implied but not shown r*pe scenes in the show and one was in season 1. You can't make this shit up.

I absolutely loved this show when I was younger, and it was absolutely crazy. You also come to the realization that almost everyone is related or has some history, it's a wild ride.

I loved this show when it first came out. Like I watched every episode when it first came out until the obligatory frozen season because 1 I was getting sick of Frozen and 2 they didn't bother with adding them properly into the town. But I'm currently rewatching it. I love how ridiculous it is.
i literally was obsessed with frozen (it's still one of my favorite movies) and even i thought the frozen addition was completely unnecessary. it was just obvious product placement because the movie was successful
I agree about the unnecessary Frozen insert, however, it allowed them to use the Snow Queen a bit more as its pretty fair to say Frozen is VERY VERY LOOSELY based off the Snow Queen so I'll allow it
@@silverbrumbyfan I agree. I very much dislike Frozen. But I did like how they did it in the show incorporating The Snow Queen. Mostly I loved Elizabeth Mitchell. And her costumes.
@silverbrumbyfan I liked that part of it but that's it. It's better than frozen 2's explanation of Elsa's powers and it doesn't have another native American vs colonization thing even if it's in freaking Scandinavia and the natives Sami are also white
As insane as this show is, it has a charm that can't be denied. I have seen the show twice from beginning to end and I probably will watch it again at some point haha.
Listen OUAT was one of the best thing to happen to tv at the time lol My best-friend got me to watch season one before season two premiered, and I was hooked after the 2nd Episode. Maleficent, Rumple, and Regina's dramatic episodes had me in tears😭 They were incredible actors who made you see the humanity in these villains. The writers crafted fun stories to follow. I enjoyed the twists and turns. Didn't finish the series though.
Me too and now I’m wondering if my mom was secretly cringing the whole time 😂 I mean I know she liked the show because we’d both get so excited for new episodes but she HAD to see how weird it is😂 but I totally didn’t
Ok but are we going to forget this show was so big that it got a spin off? Like Once upon a time in neverland was a thing, just as crazy as the original show!
@caitlyncarvalho7637 I think they would not get human bodies like jimminy cricket because he was at one point human prior to being turned into a cricket. The characters in Charlotte's web are always animals so they would no longer be able to talk I guess. Honestly, that's one of the few rules I feel like the show stuck to for a while at least. I don't recall if the Cheshire cat obeys this rule or not from the wonderland spinoff
i remember watching this when it first came out and there were so many moments where things just got so wild that my family would look at each other in shock and then laugh. peter pan making eggs for rumplestiltskin, rumplestiltskin simultaneously being like 5 different fairytale characters with each being some dramatic twist reveal, (SPOILERS) neil randomly keeling over as soon as the characters figure out he's supposed to die, frozen becoming canon alongside the actual snow queen??? the first season is actually pretty entertaining despite all the cheesy effects, but past that it just kept losing me. i remember looking back at the wiki after it ended and every character's page was divided into like 8 curse sections 😭i was trying to explain rumplestiltskin to my friend a while ago too and i had to deliver like 5 pages of lore just for them to understand lol
This show had some really interesting takes and twists on fairytale which were usually pretty cool. Peter Pan being a villain and Rumple's father was arguably the best of the twists. The Shadows were really creepy too
The Spinof for Alice in Wonderland is still my favorite, it's the only part of the show you can't own on DVD/Blu Ray which is a bit sad. But yeah, 1 to 3 included was honestly super fun.
I love that the actress playing Snow White looked so weird when she ran that the director just left her out of all group running shots even if she was in the scene seconds before and seconds after the shot.
This video was immaculatly edited. And even though we all know it, i gotta say you're a fantastic camera presence. Energetic but not annoying, and naturally funny. Good work dude. :) ❤
please tell me there's a part 2 where you cover Maleficent's daughter who came from a dragon egg or King Arthur being evil and that the dark one's dagger is the tip of Excalibur is or that the Jekyll and Hyde serum made an evil doppelganger of the Evil queen or ANY of the craziness that was season 7, including, but not limited to, Hook's daughter being Alice from Alice in Wonderland, the regular world being retconned into a world that previously had magic but then Mother Gothel from Tangled nuked the world and restarted evolution without magic so she canonically watched fish evolve into humans, and lastly there's a new version of the Enchanted Forest that's time dilated so they could age henry up and cast a new actor but still keep the other actors. i left a very similar comment on the previous video but i will never get over how wild the later season stuff is
I want to see a diagram of Henry’s family tree because I’m pretty sure he is related to every major fictional character in literature through some connection… 14:17 whoops, spoke too soon, thanks for the hook up Billaim lol
I binge watch the series during the pandemic and it was my first time watching the show. I really enjoyed the Peter Pan season and the way how they made him evil is well done and I wish Disney does it more with his character.
I got as far as Season 5 with the Arthurian mythos. After that I trailed off 'cause I didn't like what they were doing to it. But Belle banishing Rumple remains one of my top painful moments.
I loved this show! It's the only soap opera I've ever been able to watch, though full disclosure I didn't make it through all the seasons. I feel like there are two types of fan for this show: those who get the campy drama and enjoy it, and those who take it seriously and try to defend it. I'm in the "enjoy the campy drama" camp. I actually loved the Peter Pan season, and the kid who played him was awesome. Some of my favorite characters were the dwarves, the Huntsman, Hook (grr), Rumple (that dude threw himself into his role) and the Evil Queen. I also loved the crazy ups and downs with the Robin Hood / Evil Queen romance. I can't imagine watching it as a kid, though - not sure what would interest kids about this show. As much as I enjoyed it, I couldn't tell you much of what happened in that show or what season it happened in. I know I didn't see all seasons, but not even sure where I stopped. :D
OMG, I never knew how much I needed you to cover OUAT until I got the notification! I haven't been around in a while, so I can definitely say this was such a pleasant surprise! So happy to see you still going strong, Billiam! Been around since the Digimon videos 🥰
My favourite part was when they killed Henry’s father, for no other reason than they wanted Emma with Hook but they didn’t want her to actually make that decision. Because that could have been interesting.
@@kenna163 Yeah, honestly, I wished he'd stayed dead. Not only because I've come to hate his character after that, but because it was a good send off for him.
Never watched this show, but I always found it super funny that they cast a generic looking hot guy as hook, and just stuck a hook on him, like "See! He has the hook! It's totally him!".
More like a copy of him, not the original one since the storyline is completely different in this show. Each fairytale is set originally in different eras so the characters were never supposed to meet in the first place but this series put every character in the same timeline. This series is a one big fanfiction fairytale spinoff, with characters that act like americans rather than acting like europeans (most of them have american accents) that they are based on. Reminds me of marvel multiverse with timelines mashed together
The rabbit hole of Once Upon A Time is truly unending (unlike its spin-off show, Once Upon A Time in Wonderland which died upon arrival, RIP). My favorite thing about the later seasons is that they did a soft reboot for season 7... and it actually helped?? Mostly because the new characters didn't have previous on-screen growth that the show would've undone, lmao.
I was obsessed with this show for 5 and a half years. Like OBSESSED. And one day I just gave up. I still love this show because nostalgia, but yeah I always recommend people stop at season 3. The plot just... Exploded
my brother watched this when we were younger so I'd get back from karate class and catch snippets like "oh it's the fairy tail show" and then a week later Dr. Jekyl shows up
The one fun fact thing I know about this show is that the Wicked Witch looks gross because the green used for the original Wizard of Oz Witch is trademarked so they had to use a really sweaty and gross off brand shade of green
@@Rose-np8qv You also have to remember these actors are on SUPER lighted green screen sets. It would be ridiculously hot and have no fans due to messing up the green screen.
My sister worked from home for awhile and would have this show on the TV while she was working. I can't tell you how many times I asked "What is this show even about?" I think a better question would have been, "What is this show NOT about?" 🤣
I have completely forgotten how far into this show I got, but I absolutely loved it as a kid. Thought it was peak storytelling because of how connected everything was.
I couldn't really get invested in any of the canon couples but SwanQueen kept me watching for like 5 seasons before I gave up on the show ever doing any actually good storywriting.
@@nelgluhak6709 not only would they tease it with obvious queerbait scenes but then absolutely mock people for shipping it. Like I do know some people in the fandom went way too far, but the crap the writers and some of the actors said was just really petty and mean to me.
The flashbacks serve as a parallel. To portray a lesson or theme that the character in the present needs to reestablish. It's actually pretty poetic and helps give more insight to the audience
You really started the video with the one clip I not only forgot about watching but gave me the most intense flashbacks once it appeared. I have seen enough of this show so that it sticks in my brain (like the whole arc about Daniel coming back) but not enough for it to seem like anything less than a fever dream.
I loved Once Upon A Time ALOT. It was one of my favorite shows to watch after the shows Lost and Desperate housewives ended. Rumple and Regina were my most favorite characters on the show. Season 3 was probably my favorite season because we mostly got to see both of those two iconic characters grow and evolve.
Yes. But at least here, they don't have to insert some woke shits and social justice lectures and just make some princess characters just look badass beating their villains.
a ghost just absolutely decking someone before possessing someone else is probably the funniest thing I've ever seen 10 seconds in and Im already sold on this show I vaguely remember watching the first season of this and grim while my kidneys were playing up and since then I can't watch either show without feeling ill tho 😭
Your editing is incredible in this video. Thank you for the laughs and the unhinged recap! I would love to see you recap the rest of the show; I really want to know the heights of insanity this show reached.
so, if you want a story with the same basic concept as OUAT (fairy tale characters living in the real world), I recommend the Fables comics. admittedly, I haven't read anywhere close to all of them, but I enjoyed what I did read, and they definitely do interesting things with the premise. (you can also play the Fables video game, The Wolf Among Us, which is the best thing that Telltale put out after their genre change (so The Walking Dead on))
You know i feel I'm one of the few who actually like season 4 even the frozen based first half. Also only true OUAT fans know the insane flooding back of memories when the frozen 2 trailer said that arendel was next to an "enchanted forest" cause legit thats exactly how the geography works in once upon a time.
So I’m not saying it’s necessarily goood storytelling. But it is kind of impressive how the writers are able to continue to integrate so many new characters and complexities to the plot.
My flatmate at uni was bingewatching this show on netflix and it would often be on when I came into the kitchen, I would watch bits and pieces with her and it seemed insane. I thought that was just because I don't know anything about disney/fairytale lore but watching this video made me realise i wouldn't have understood anything even with the context lmao
I loved this show because it was so over-the-top and crazy. The drama was so much, and the actors were phenomenal especially Rumple and the Evil Queen. I'm a sucker for these fairytale twist type stories like this and Ever After High.
I sat relatively chill, cat in my lap, inexpressive to this video... until 14:13 hits. Then, the dam burst, laughing, wheezing, coughing, choking -- all to a meme I've seen hundreds of times before. Editor's timing, man. Beautiful.

I respect the OUAT writers they did whatever they wanted and they were as insane and ambitious and unique as possible without any restrictions they had complete creative freedom within their budget and they didn’t care what anyone thought and they had fun with it
Edit: for all the seasons
Honestly we need more shoes like once upon a time. Sure it had its dumb story lines and the family connections are more complicated then the Greek mythology family tree. But they put a new twist on so many iconic stories which was honestly quite refreshing.

George Lucas did the same thing with the prequels. I love the prequels.
Regina's whole story is she gets close to being happy and then someone intentionally or accidently ruins her happiness. I know she tries to be good for Henry but like the show never lets her enjoy being happy.
she ruins her own happiness
@@animasuperfreakgirl she also SAs the Huntsman for years.
She finally gets to be happy in the finale and season 6. And to be fair she betrays at least one major cast member pretty much every season 1-5 either intentionally or indirectly in her attempts to be better.

I stopped after the frozen character got introduced.
The frozen one felt like I was watching those Elsa and spiderman's family drama on youtube. Not to mention how I DESPISE frozen in general 😭😭
I said It before on the last one, and I will say it again. There is just something so hypnotizing about a completely convoluted mix mash conglomeration of Disney fairytales into an overly complex plot. Like kingdom hearts and this show. I just love em, even with all the nonsense.
have u ever seen penny dreadful? its like ouat but instead of disney, its characters from classic gothic literature lol
I'd HIGHLY recommend Fables, it's OUAT but good.
Go watch 10th Kingdom
Watching OUAT was probably the best decision i've ever made in my nearly three decades of life. It is pure cheese and often so over the top but still has charm. I feel like it has the "you won't believe what happened next" vibe that Riverdale tried to have but failed miserably
I just love this show for how bonkers it could be but I will admit they had an issue of constantly adding new characters and then abandoning them.
They kept the ones that mattered tho :)
Honestly if halfway through Season 5 they just revealed one of the characters to be Guybrush Threepwood I wouldn’t have bat an eye
I love this show for its pure insanity but I love when people who never watch it experience it for the first time ❤
right?? like its so ironically good??
@Paraone Ngatai You actually should. It's a good time
The first season is really interesting to me, because the story is contained to that one season, and it has a stronger mystery vibe in season 1. You can tell that the writers weren't sure they'd have a second season.
I'll still be surprised and shocked that they okayed a plotline where the Wicked Witch cucks the Evil Queen by getting knocked up by Robin Hood while disguised as the mans dead wife all out of jealousy??

Yes. I grew up with The Young and the Restless, Hawaiian TV soap operas, etc.. and they all shared similar tropes. Evil lovers, people coming back from the dead more than once, McGuffins, love triangles, Rumpelstiltskin, I can keep going. 😂😂
Like Riverdale and Vampire Diaries, just authors personal fanfictions coming to life on the screen
The ending is pretty tepid as a result, even if it's technically a super wholesome feel-good one.

i literally was obsessed with frozen (it's still one of my favorite movies) and even i thought the frozen addition was completely unnecessary. it was just obvious product placement because the movie was successful
I agree about the unnecessary Frozen insert, however, it allowed them to use the Snow Queen a bit more as its pretty fair to say Frozen is VERY VERY LOOSELY based off the Snow Queen so I'll allow it
