    During the press go-round for the first Spy Kids, a lot of talk show talking heads assumed that the actors involved were doing the film as a favor for someone or another, or as a contractual obligation. They were quite surprised when they kept getting the answer that major actors like Antonio Banderas, Cheech Marin, and George Clooney were genuinely pumped to be a part of the production for this "goofy kid's film". It was a combination of a solid script, real chemistry between the cast, a good kid's movie with an earnest Hispanic focus, and Robert Rodriguez's fantastic energy.

      It really is wonderful how much effort went into the film. Just because a piece of media is made for kids doesn't mean it can't be incredibly well-made, after all. It's frustrating how much of what is sold to kids really is low-effort garbage when we have examples of what can be done when people care about more than just generating revenue.

    31:39 Spy Kids 4 is complicated. The story as I know it comes from a mix of rumors so take it with a lot salt. Apparently, Rodriguez was forced into making the movie under contractual obligation and to make sure that nobody ever tried to force him into making a movie against his will again he purposely went for a scorched earth strategy when making the movie. Bad acting, writing, directing, stupid gimmicks, etc. So that's apparently why Spy Kids 4 is so bad, to taint the legacy of a beloved franchise, but again take that with a lot of salt.

    I absolutely love this retrospective on this super fun series. I think something else that should be respected was the focus on hispanic and latin characters. While there is a colorism conversation to be had, even just the use of names and accents that don't align with the stereotypical North American/European based spy conventions, or stereotypical casting, helps build an inclusive environment.
    I'm uncertain which cultures it's normal in but things like the uncle joke had more layers when, in mine and friends cultures, uncle and aunt are terms used loosely for family friends who, most likely, helped raise you. So the attitude of Carmen and Juni toward Cheech's denial makes total sense and him coming around on the term by Spy Kids 3 feels that extra bit heartwarming.

    • @shkrimp5607
      @shkrimp5607 2 года назад +8

      Hi, yes! as a Hispanic kid, back in the day these movies were just so relatable and awe-inspiring in a way. Hearing Hispanic names, accents, having those layered jokes and having Latino looking characters just elevated this movie for me as a kid and were part of the reason why I became so obsessed with them. There were barely any kid movies with Hispanic main characters or cast, or just any movie with the spy kid's inclusivity and feel. I felt like I couldn't really relate or become attached to a lot of properties that always had a white cast or only used other races as background characters/sidekicks. I always wanted to be Carmen as a kid and my little brother was always a Juni fan. Representation really does matter :)

    Robert Rodriguez is the only director I've seen who recognizes that one of the greatest instigators of creativity is limitations. Like, it's no coincidence that for instance the original Star Wars movies and the Lord of the Rings trilogy both slap while their follow up features fail to live up to them - in the first cases, there were people telling them no. New Line was doing everything in their power to keep Jackson from making an actual book by book trilogy, and of course Lucas cobbled Star Wars together out of whatever he could and had Marcia in the editing suite reigning his wilder shit in. Then both these franchises were unbelievably successful and they gave them all the money and creative freedom in the world and they lost the magic. It says so much about Rodriguez that he self-imposes limitations to force himself to find creative solutions - he understands what gives his shit that extra something and actively uses it to his advantage.

    • @PhoebeTheFairy56
      @PhoebeTheFairy56 10 месяцев назад +1

      I think part of why limitation is helpful for creativity is because with less to choose from, you get to spend more time on what you do have. And it's also easier to make decisions when you have less things to decide between

    Spy Kids 3D: Game over was my absolute favorite movie as a kid. My sister and I were always allowed to get one movie each whenever we went to Blockbuster so we had a self imposed rule- every second trip we'd get Spy Kid's 3D:Game over and Scooby Doo and the Cyber chase, as these were our two favourite movies in the world. I have such good memories of watching Spy Kids 3D and during my second year of college I pissed off an entire film art class because I would constantly bring it up as an example, and I stand by it. it's a good film As a kid with a grandparent in a wheelchair (Who has since passed) It was really important to me to see Grandpa, this really cool, driven mentor figure, in a wheelchair, coping with his disability and ultimently forgiving the person responsible and sharing that journey with his grandchildren. Grandpa was allowed to be angry about his disability, but he was also allowed to own it, to embrace it and have it become a part of his character while not defining him as a Character.. And there's not a lot of other films that do that, and very few that actually have a disabled actor play that role so seeing Ricardo Montabán playing that role is still really important to me, an adult who still doesn't see many minority roles played by minority actors. Also this movie made me realize I was attracted to women (10 year old me saw Carmen and went "oh fuck that makes sense")

    Hey Billiam, I grew up watching these movies and I still love them to this day so I want to say thank you for putting so much effort, detail, and love into this video. You are an awesome guy. I appreciate you.

    I'm new, this is your first video that I've seen, and let me just say... I love how much you clearly love the subject matter of this video. I'm a Hispanic person, Spy Kids was one of the first Hispanic-led movie franchises I've ever seen, and I think it's a real shame how little love I see it get. Between your clear and sincere love of the Sky Kids franchise, and the depth of your research, this is the sort of content I just want to see more of. Thank you for making such a dope video.

    How many weeks of research do you put into these videos? This went from a Spy Kids retrospective to a Robert Rodriguez documentary. I love your videos man. Good work.

    Whoa my friends and I just did a Spy Kids marathon the other night so it’s cool you’re posting this. I’m actually watching while working on a thumb thumb knitting pattern

    One of the best things about the Spy Kids DVDs is extensive behind-the-scenes footage. I love that stuff.
