    The thing I found striking about free streaming services is that they have a lot of stuff that Netflix used to have before they started focusing on original content.

    • @mind-of-neo
      @mind-of-neo 2 года назад +170

      Exactly. They have a lot of stuff you'll never see on the pay services.

    • @jbmp1390
      @jbmp1390 2 года назад +299

      And you just hit the nail on the head as to why Netflix is failing. It's not that they're bad at original content, some of it is really great. But they focused way too much on original content past a certain point and that was the problem. None of us payed for Netflix because of original stuff. We liked it because it had movies and shows we already liked/loved and a few really good originals. Now it's basically become the other way around.

    Hey Billiam,
    The Hoopla borrowing limit is dependent on the library. It's not 9 for everyone. Each time an item is borrowed from Hoopla, the library is charged, so the library has to limit the number of borrows per patron. (And you're very lucky to have a library that offers 9!)
    Source: I work in a library.

    • @fenfen8612
      @fenfen8612 2 года назад +56

      Yep, it can get *insanely* expensive very quickly for a library system with Hoopla. I worked for one when they introduced Hoopla and the borrowing limit was 3/mo to test interest, but luckily the interest was there to where we could afford to bump it up to 5/mo and justify the cost vs usage. We weren't even a small library system either which speaks of how pricey the service was at the time when I worked there in 2016. Licensing with digital goods is a lot more pricey than people think it would be!

  • @twilightwolfqueen409
    @twilightwolfqueen409 2 года назад +374

    Huge props for promoting Hoopla and public libraries.
    Hoopla does have a limit, but it is partially due to the contract the library system has with the company (source: I work for a library and our checkout limit is 7 a month vs Billiam's 9).
    Another similar service is Kanopy, which tends to have more classic films and some documentaries.
    Both services usually cater a bit to the library's demographic and what items they can no longer provide physically.

    Before the pandemic we had to do our methadone treatment groups in person. Which was uh, definitely something in downtown Portland Oregon. You best believe I knew every good thing playing on Tubi that day every time I did group 😂 and you know what that is still so awesome to me. I saw people who had no data on their little junky $20 Walmart card service Android phones. And they went from being absolutely miserable having nothing in life to look forward to, to excitedly telling me or a counselor about how they were able to watch a movie yesterday while they charged their phone in the library. And how it was either a movie they loved as a kid, or something they'd never seen before that they thought was so awesome. There was one guy in group who honest to God it helped him get clean because instead of having absolutely nothing to do in between constant job interviews and attempts to get housing but spend his food stamps on drugs that would dull his brain until his next interview or odd job, he could go to the library, plug his phone in, and watch some movies. He eventually got a job cleaning some barber shop and he would just cast his shit to their big ole TV and watch stuff with the customers while he cleaned. Everyone loved him and it ended up turning his life completely around. Last time I talked to him he said he wants to study cinematography and it's history at the community college at some point! We always talked about cinematography before and after groups. He didn't know any terminology but you could tell he had a real passion for it. I hope he's doing good and gets to take those classes(: he was a real sweet gentleman who had just been dealt a horribly rough hand in life. He had gotten to a year clean in February of this year and I really hope he makes it to 2💖

    A lot of the free streaming services are really good and we should be using them more. The problem with the "premium" streaming services is that they have become too arrogant as to what they think they deserve to be paid for. We need to embrace these free platforms and force the bigger platforms to compete with them. They have a lot of content, like the Flinstones, you won't find on services that spend all their money on short, temporary licenses and the production of "original content".

    Librarian in the US here, you milage with hoopla will vary. Different systems allow for different numbers of checkouts a month. For instance, I can get 25 items a month though one county. Overall, it's a great service. Your library may also have access to a service called Overdrive that will have some movies available as well. There are limited checkouts there and the availability of the app across devices isn't as great as hoopla but still have access to content there.
    P.S. props for Billiam for shouting out library services. Everyone should have a library card for that amazing free content.

    Also, YES. I'm so happy you've discovered Columbo!! I grew up with Columbo, and he's awesome. Never underestimate him. Columbo's true power is that he can hide his hyperintelligence and powers of deduction under a shabby trenchcoat and a puppy dog guise of never really knowing what the suspect is thinking, all while staying two steps ahead of them at nearly every turn. It takes really clever writing and a great performance to pull that off, and Columbo and Peter Falks do just that. (And, fun fact, only one of Falks's eyes was real. If you watch the closeups, you can tell which one was glass.)

A lot of the issue with adapdations of stuff like Peanuts, Phantom, Judge Dredd, etc, is there the quick, strip-a-day/week format doesn't translate for traditionally length media formats like TV or films, but would work a lot better for 8-11 minute shorts that build up while being mostly self contained.

    Freevee is so good. I have been looking for a lighthearted western for a while and one of the first shows I saw on Freevee was Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. The ads are never longer than a minute and a half and I’ve been using it more than Netflix recently.

    Im going to watch the next, 12 hour long, Lost video like I did the rest. In one sitting and in a state of pure joy listening to Billiam condense the one damned show I cant slog through into an increasingly sizable fraction of the shows runtime.

    There's a lot of high-quality hidden gem in Pluto and Tubi. Satoshi Kon's movies, The Hunt, Lupin 3rd series, and so much more. Tubi got bigger library and somewhat better UI, but one thing I like about Pluto (other than their Star Trek catalogue) is they repeat their catalogue often. Didn't have time to watch The Commence? Just wait a month or two, it'll come back. Too bad they only have Mythbuster in the UK version of the app.

    I've found some truly free streaming services. One weird I found was only available on the Samsung store on my Blu-ray player, haven't seen much though as my brother keeps taking the HDMI cable for something else. On the TV I downloaded Cartoons which shows someone's VLC playlist of unlicensed cartoons, no ads and no control over what will be shown. It's weird but I like putting it on when I'm sick.

    The UK has a few free streaming services based on the main TV channels over here (BBC iplayer, ITV hub, All 4, My5). These streaming services are more about watching shows after they've aired on the main channel meaning most shows on the services have only certain episodes available at a time with them being taken down after like a month and being replaced by a different episode. Despite this the services do have some shows that are available in their entirety without said time limit, for example All4 has all of Fraiser. The services also have movies as well with the movies being whatever was shown on the main TV channel. The services also let the user watch the TV channels live.

    After watching this video I checked out Freevee (in the uk) and found a documentary that looked interesting and chucked it on. I absolutely loved the fact that there was no effort at all put into editing the right moments to put their advert breaks in. Watching the documentary you can literally see where the adverts were originally placed when it was broadcast on TV but on here they would just start out of nowhere In the middle of a scene and for whatever reason I absolutely love it!
    Thanks for this video as I can see me going down a rabbit hole here

    Most countries have at least one public broadcaster that has at least one streaming service (BBC iPlayer, ABC iView and SBS On Demand in Australia, whatever the Canadian one is). These are really great and have high quality shows from around the world (including the US) and anyone can watch for free with no ads if they have a VPN. In Australia at least the commercial channels also offer free, ad supported online streaming services that are decent too.

Also, you didn't mention Pokémon TV which, well, it's only Pokémon stuff but it doesn't have all of the seasons or all of the movies, it shuffles its content every week or two I believe.

    I’m surprised you didn’t talk much about the frequency of ads on the various platforms. For me, that’s what makes or breaks the service. Tubi’s ad frequency is reasonable IMO, some of the others are too much.
    I’ll take your advice and sample FreeVee at some point, even though I’m not the biggest tv / steaming service watcher.
