This style isn't exactly my favorite, but that doesn't mean I can't acknowledge that there's something spectacular going on here. They're so close to catastrophe, yet contained. I credit the drummer; if they had a lesser rhythm section, they'd fall apart faster than my high school relationships. Well done, boys.

@@ramsoope8520 Cavalcade is going to be amazing, they keep demonstrating that they have everything it takes to be a prolific, genuinely progressive band that keeps finding new sounds and improving. They say they're already done writing almost half of their 3rd record before their 2nd is even out and their new stuff is as good or better than their best material so far. They have so much potential for so many more amazing albums and I'm so glad there's a new band this good out there that's so dedicated to their craft.

Although a Marxist for most of this career, Sombart affiliated with Nazism in the 1930s due to his deep anti-Semitism...it was just another form of socialism after all. @@olasmcc7266 the 90s had a lot of math rock too. Slint, hella, lightning bolt, capn jazz, and lots of others. The 90s were like the years that math rock was being crafted and then it bubbled up in the 2000s and hit it's golden age.

This is some kind of magick. I've been listening to their album where they sound so old, so confident and this is my first time seeing them and christ, they are about 8? It's like they've tapped into some ancient channels. Of course they haven't, they're just supremely talented and hard working and I love them.

Did you see them at Primavera? I was there too. Can't say the moshpit was the best ever, too many drunk idiots, Lightning Bolt and Idles had 10000 times better moshpits, but the black midi set was cacophanously great. Mix wasn't amazing - sax and keyboard were super low on the mix, could hardly hear them sometimes. Still a great time, I'll try to catch them in London next month.

Lot of This Heat influence popping up these days for some reason. Some Preoccupations and Palm songs remind me of This Heat, too. Anyway, this band is great.

Math rock was at it's peak between 2005-2011 I'd say now we're getting a well deserved revival

@@olasmcc7266 the 90s had a lot of math rock too. Slint, hella, lightning bolt, capn jazz, and lots of others. The 90s were like the years that math rock was being crafted and then it bubbled up in the 2000s and hit it's golden age.

@@gdavis9296 Try bands like Henry Cow or This Heat. Both from the UK as well. Faust from Germany is also in this ballpark. Pere Ubu from the US. black midi sound very inspired by all these bands who originally around in the 70's.

This is some kind of magick. I've been listening to their album where they sound so old, so confident and this is my first time seeing them and christ, they are about 8? It's like they've tapped into some ancient channels. Of course they haven't, they're just supremely talented and hard working and I love them.
How do you just get a bunch of talent like that in one place, though??

Incredible. Their age, their talent, their energy. The guitarist screeches like Jim Morrison which is tight as shit. The drummer is a god. So experimental.
The guitarist/vocalist reminded me a lot of Adrian Belew during his time with King Crimson

Did you see them at Primavera? I was there too. Can't say the moshpit was the best ever, too many drunk idiots, Lightning Bolt and Idles had 10000 times better moshpits, but the black midi set was cacophanously great. Mix wasn't amazing - sax and keyboard were super low on the mix, could hardly hear them sometimes. Still a great time, I'll try to catch them in London next month.

Reminds me of: '80s King Crimson, DNA (or other No-Wave bands), Sonic Youth, the Jesus Lizard, and a lot of Mission of Burma. And, increasingly, This Heat.

Lot of This Heat influence popping up these days for some reason. Some Preoccupations and Palm songs remind me of This Heat, too. Anyway, this band is great.

FINALLY a digitized performance. They blew me a way live..best supporting band I've seen in the past two years. It's like Fugazi meets Talking Heads meets Drive Like Jehu meets Duster but completely original. Appreciate that 2019 has some kids making music like this.

@@combustinghandshakes8617 that is the thing. i think "this" is in fact... the pure sonic energy or creative sound invention, uninhibited by past constructs and expectations of what music should sound like. that is why their more downtempo or cleaner songs are still just as kickass. post-rocking so hard you wanna call it post-rock revival.
Basically more punk less pop, not hating on poppy music but I think it’s too prevalent these days as it’s bled into so many different genres. Good thing the internet and streaming age is allowing a platform for bands like Black Midi
