I played in a band with Geordie's mum, doing pubs in Walthamstow! We rehearsed a few times at her house. Geordie was about 13 at the time. He was phenomenally talented even then.
Here to say this too! Any band with this many members is no easy task, but having keys, muted toms, horns, etc like Black Midi does presents a decent/unique challenge for any engineer. They absolutely nailed it, and it sounds brilliant through good headphones.
Really? I''m just on the first song, but I was thinking it was pretty bad compared to KEXP's usual standards. Drums are way too muted, can *barely* hear the piano at all, vocals buried at times, no articulate separation from the instruments - it's just kind of one smeared blur of sound when they're all blasting.
I think it's safe to say that Morgan Simpson is one of the most impressive drummers i've ever seen play. His creativity on a lot of parts is otherwordly.

The wall-of-sound/drone portions begin as something transcendent and kind, personal, and then through subtle nuance the notes in symphony take on a dissonance which served to dissociate me from the once kind nature previous, to something nonetheless transcendent but now... Not exactly impersonal, the person no longer has anything to do with it; it's something esoteric and monistic, loving and also terrible. Truly beautiful. And Geordie's vocals became a shout into that Void.
its crazy how much better Geordie's vocals got between schlagenheim and cavalcade, maybe its just the mixing or the songwriting that changed but his singing is downright showmanlike on Dethroned

dethroned is already winding up to be one of the best songs of the year
absolutely
really out here sounding like a song off Yeezus🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶best fuckin band ever
and with that thrash jazz song
Yup can agree to that. The guitar in the outro especially is pure chills down my spine. This album is going to be great.
If it somehow tops the studio version of Slow then I’ll be impressed. These guys are incredible
Ive have the pleasure of working with morgan for a couple days in a studio. He is by far the most impressive drummer ive come across. Very sound guy too.
i'm an old progger and this is one of the most exciting new bands than I have seen in a very long while.
The thing that just strikes me every time I watch this video (8+ times) is the PRECISION in how they play together. Truly impressive for such young musicians. Clearly, they practice their guts out.
i have never seen a band play so far apart and independent yet so close and together in my life
those moments where they essentially just play random notes and be the loudest they possibly can shouldnt work together as well as they do
First reaction was that I don't like this but somehow I couldn't turn it over. I then realised I was mesmerised by it. I watched all the way to the end and was left with a 'WTF have I just witnessed?' feeling. Incredible. This isn't just music, it's an experience.
Ahhhh, remember the day I felt that with the first KEXP
It’s weird because i really enjoy this live performance but for some reason their studio recordings sound like shit to me.
Geordie looks like a cross between Tom Holland and Review Bruh here
Nah he looks like a mix between that guy who plays Joker on Gotham and Criken2
So true
He looks like Annakin Skywalker
Funny enough, both Geordie and Tom are BRIT School alumni.
He is Denny from The Room
Seeing lewis playing the sax quietly in the corner is so funny to me
All the way through Dethroned-Sugar/Tzu is the best thing I have ever heard in my life. There isn’t a single part of either of those songs in the performance that could be any better
A good dose of Ornette Coleman's sensibility, the energy of minutemen, - pure black midi. It's rare when a band impresses my old, old ass. These guys were great from the start, and they're only getting better...Hot Damn! Keep it up, gentlemen.
As a fellow old ass I agree. When my Grandchildren have me listen to a new band I usually tell them, it’s generic and it’s been done.
Old ass, checking in. Can't get over these guys.
Minutemen appreciation squad
Hello fellow oldies!
boomers got the vax?
The shape of music to come
nice, it reminds me of ornette coleman too
Hell yeah!
I think it sounds far too retro to be the future
Please drop the album, it’s the 12th time I’ve been here
omg SAME
3 DAYS
THEY JUST DID ON SUPRISE
@@sivvansharma3023 and it was awesome
@@davodav7746 hell yeah man
These guys are becoming one of my favorite bands, and they've got years and years of music ahead of them! So refreshing
How are they this good
Holy shit is that Lewis for BCNR! I knew they knew each other but didn't expect him in this
The boys looking crispy af. I'm so fucking excited for the next record
Words can't describe the amount of joy I'm experiencing while listening to this.
I'm a huge King Crimson fan, it's nice to see someone trying to do something as experimental and musically mature
Bookmarking this so I can watch it everyday for the next 2 years
This version of "Dethroned" is amazing. Also love the Frank Sinatra like vocals in the beginning
It's the best version for sure!
14:25 greep goes absolutely nuts for a moment there
Literally just discovered this band by watching Buffcorrel dance to this. The music (and his dancing) was incredible. I generally listen to metal, but like the more avant-grade stuff. Y’all scratched that itch and more. Thanks for your music!
Buffcorrel unironically has a really good taste in music, shit is super diverse.
This guys should have played in Eurovision
imagine
Fuck that
That wouldn't even be fair lol. These guys clap probably every song that's ever entered that competition.
Heh.. they 're too good
It would cause a mass psychosis
I wish I lived next door to Black Midi
Good lord. Compliments to everyone who was part of making this.....the songwriters, musicians, video and audio crew and these guys parents for raising such talented folk.
F*ck me, I’ve never been so happy with the algorithm for throwing this my way. What an incredible 25 minutes.
This may be the best live performance I have ever seen. I can already tell that black midi are going to be one of those legendary bands that will be hailed and remembered forever.
Is it possible to love a record before it's even released
Yes
Yes
Apparently. I didn’t know until now
we've been gifted with a KEXP set that somehow manages to top their previous one, which is saying a lot
god this is the best live performance i’ve ever seen
Who is here again after experiencing the full album?
We definitely need more live versions now 😩
They're doing a performance on today on bbc radio.
Dethroned is stunning. Can't wait to hear it on the album.
I hope this gets an official CD release like their other KEXP session!!!!!! Holy shit!!!!
This is Gen Z Larks-era King Crimson and I can't get enough of it
Geordie Greep actually said that Larks is his favorite King Crimson album
The recording, mixing and engineering here is almost as impeccable as the band.
Fuck yeah!
The drummer is out of this world. The level of skill of each member at this age is also something out of this world.
3:20 this chaotic bit and the section that follows feel straight out of a 70s King Crimson album, the resemblance is uncanny
This performance has huge Greep energy. Absolutely bonkers. This album sounds insane
Gotta love that greep energy
This performance of Dethroned might be the best thing I've ever heard them do. It just kept getting better and better and better and better.
My first time hearing them. Every cell in my body just exploded.
Makes me so happy to see Sugar/Tzu on the Hellfire track list!!
Holy shit this set was absolutely incredible, like this shit is MENTAL! Can’t wait for the album!
This is probably the 5th time I've watched this entire video this weekend. Can't get enough of this.
this version of dethroned sounds so fucking good
Seeing these boys on Sunday, I reaaaaalllly hope they play Sugar/Tzu it's an absolute majesty of a song
They played it and it was awesome 😃
F'n amazing! They are tight af. They've obviously been listening to a lot of '70s prog-rock/jazz fusion & I am here for it!
I didn’t know Geordie was the man who killed killed me for a Chip and started my journey in New Vegas
