Thank you for making this video and sharing it with the community so that everyone can see the importance of a lighter pouch! I mainly use 7mm, 1/4”(6.35) and 6mm steel balls and I can confirm that the smaller and lighter the balls, the bigger the difference between a lighter and a heavier pouch. It is also very important to note that if you are using the most efficient band set for a given ammo size/weight than the weight of the pouch will play a significant role in the overall speed that can be achieved. I believe this is one very important area in our hobby that is addressed by virtually none of the RUclipsrs posting about catapults.
Great work Mark, we've always wanted to show how pouches would affect the speed too, pouches itself always easy to be ignored. Glad to see you did it in a clear way.👍 That's why we make the pouches as small as possible now, and the holes on the pouches affect a bit too.
Nice test Mark . I once was out with 2 identical setup, apart from one had a leather pouch, the other a microfiber, both pouches were cut using the same die . Shots from the leather setup dropped short of target, microfiber was bang on .
I actually had 2 of the same pouches . One leather and one synthetic. The difference was .03g I thought it might have been too little of a difference but maybe not. It was surprising the difference in speed. I wish I would have bought exact microfiber and leather pouches to do the test but I think the results were still pretty telling.
@@ATOMark Well, considering an 8 mm steel ball weighs 2.1 g, an additional 0.3 g of pouch weight slows down the ball as much as if the steel ball weighted 0.3 g more, i.e. 2.4 g. Quick calc: 240 fps = 73 m/s for 8 mm ball (2.1 g) yields energy of 5.6 Joule. Same energy for a 2.4 g ball is achieved for a speed of 68.3 m/s = 224 fps. So your test results line-up pretty well with theoretical expectations.
I have never seen it. I wanted to compare apples and apples, so I did the test with exactly the same setup except the pouch while keeping with the 8mm setup. I think it worked out well.
Good job Mark! I used larger pouches when I started and have gravitated towards smaller ones. I get a better release plus seems like it would have to be a little less drag which probably makes more difference than I realized.
Great test! I enjoyed it. I have thought the same way. Some of my old leather pouches are way heavy compared to the wasp microfiber. I done a similar test on the chrony with the tag ends of the bands. The speed pick up with closely trimmed was a lot more than I woulda thought.
I was kinda shocked that just a tiny little difference in weight would make that much of a difference. But it does. It has convinced me to look at my setup a little different. I prefer the feel of leather but maybe I could go to a thinner pouch. For example I shoot a 1.5mm thick pouch but if I could reduce it to .75mm it might make a difference and still give the feel I like.
Thanks my friend I appreciate it. When I have a question, I try to figure it out and then pass it on to my viewers. I am sure some people out there are having the same questions as me. Lol
Interesting video! ..I use a fairly large pouch as i shoot 9.5/10 mm Steel and like to have something to hold on to as i find that the pouches i get from The Band Manufacturers GZK and Snipersling are a bit small for my Ammo so have to make my own out of leather and they are about as wide as my index finger and work for me quite well but I do realise that I am trading some speed for it although I reckon that the Jules of energy dumped on target is still sufficient for small Game and Pigeons etc Cheers for the video if you know of any supplier who sells decent sized pouches in leather i would be interested in trying them out

Interesting video. Got me thinking what the performance difference is testing degree by degree temperature wise. Fastest tapers, fastest bands, time bands held stretched, best matches to ammo sizes. The list could go on forever! We need a scientific slingist lab technician
I would be comfortable in saying that the speed would increase or decrease like usual but the difference between the 2 would remain the same. When I did cold and warm weather tests with 2 different ammo, the speed difference would increase with both sizes but equally at 40fps for example. It was very interesting.
What if you use double instead of single bands? Shouldn't this provide double the force, implying same speed for twice the total mass of ammo + pouch? Greetings from Germany, awesome video series!
Ato thank you for showing the study.. Yes pouches make a difference to me! Some of the best pouches I have used so far is the #fowler, Warrior pouches, and super sure. Hey everyone just get outside and try these different setups. Get out of those dark holes and HUNT THE Good!
Nice job Mark! Agreed. Pouch material can make differences with shooting speed. In my opinion, other than the pouch weight and material, the design or shape can affect the shooting speed. So far, the microfiber is better in term of speed.
Good experiment. I’ve noticed the Chinese use extremely light pouches? They give themselves every single advantage in their set up. They like to shoot smaller ammo too. And when you watch them on RUclips they are crack shots with their catty’s. 👍🇬🇧
Thx for sharing Don't think you'd look good w a patch. Grab some glasses! Think about a young boy or girl losing eye after you creating interest ?!?! Just saying

I thought it was important and I wanted to share the information. Thanks for the comment
Great test, brother! It’s stuff like this that is so valuable! Appreciate you taking time to do this, brother!
My pleasure bro. I just had to find out
Wow. This is a great test and a solidly scientific one! Well done. I use big leather pouches. You are making me rethink that!
Great work Mark, we've always wanted to show how pouches would affect the speed too, pouches itself always easy to be ignored. Glad to see you did it in a clear way.👍 That's why we make the pouches as small as possible now, and the holes on the pouches affect a bit too.
Thanks man. Putting holes in them just makes sense. Smaller, lighter with less drag can only increase speed.
Thank you for sharing, great testing
Thanks Moose
Very informative video Mark.
Well done 👍🏻
Thanks bro
Great video!! Always top notch information from ATO.
Thanks Steven!
Interesting information, thanks

Excellent stuff Mark , i don’t think anyone else has done this test

Great video. Really well thought through

Could i ask you where you have purchased such pouches? Thanks
You do very good informative work my Friend, I thank you for the effort you invest👍👍👍👍

Thanks Jorge the passion is real bro
Really the discipline should become olympic.
Awesome video brother
Thanks man
@ATO I can still remember when I moved to the small micro pouches. I could actually tell a difference.
Very cool and unique test. I'd imagine an oversized pouch fighting the aerodynamics doesn't help but ya weight is weight proved here.
Ya thats what I was thinking. I tried ro gwt them as close as possible.
Great stuff thnx. Quality.
Thanks man
Very interesting info.... are you going to do a review on the axiom x?
Thanks man. Yup it is on the list.
Thanks for another video. I can tell you feel comfortable using that slingshot. I also like seeing it in action.👌👊🙏✌
Ya man. I really like this one. It shoots great

My pleasure
i used to use those nylon labels from clothes look into it super light
you need to stitch two eylets into the material use kevlar thread
Interesting. I may need to try this.
Slingshot world The book is available from which website???
slingshot-world.ecwid.com/
As usual Bro, a very interesting vid. My favourite pouch is as precious to me as my catty's.
🙂 Be well Mark.
Me too man. Take it easy bro
Interesting findings.
Thanks man
Where do you buy the slingshot bands
I used jinpu .45 in this video. I get them at precisebands.com
What if you use double instead of single bands? Shouldn't this provide double the force, implying same speed for twice the total mass of ammo + pouch?
Greetings from Germany, awesome video series!
I believe you would get the same results. Faster overall speeds, but there would still be a difference in speed with the heavier pouch.
Very good video.
Thanks man

Nice job Mark!

Oh yes i went from a 1g pouch to a 0.3g it makes a way bigger difference than you'd think. #wyc
Yup it really does. Only .2 of a gram adding 8fps doesn't seem like much but with a gram difference you could be looking at 40+ fps. That's huge

Oh ya, I believe the Chinese are the leaders in the sport.
💥💥💥👍
How is the sheshou 0.65 bands?
They are nice. Really good in the warm
