I've always been a proponent of a small ammo, 3/8" is the largest I shoot regularly. My favorite is 1/4". Even Bill Hays mentioned in a forum thread that he's gonna be trying a lighter setup using an anchor point for his next shoot at SEST.

A lot of us like the good thump of heavier ammo but it's hard to deny the small stuff for raw accuracy. We'll see how this all pans out!

Good video however many people are using light ammo for hunting including me now, and for good reason! Light ammo has the ability to reach speeds such as 300+ fps, my current setup averages 320fps with .6 sumeike 20/15 taper using 8mm steel or closer to 5/16" steel. It can be shot so fast that it has incredible penetration capability, and over a distance it has the ability to maintain a flat trajectory. I use it to hunt pigeons with pass through body shots over 25m+. Obviously you would want to go for a head or neck shot on any game but that shot doesn't always present itself so you might have to take a body shot. Chris Graffin or better known on here as 'Catapult Carnage' only uses 8mm steel to hunt everything and has had pass through shots on rabbits heads with 8mm steel. Many people on the slingshot forum are using light ammo to even take heart and lung shots on rabbits putting them down in a couple of seconds. Although I would never be comfortable taking a heart/lung shot on a rabbit, I know that my setup has the capability 110%. Thanks for reading guys!

I am so glad i found your channel. I have l loved slings and shooting since I was a small boy watching an uncle cut some out of dogwood branches each year at our family reunions. I know you are supposed to allow them to cure out but heck we were kids and the reunions lasted all of one day. But he would make about 12 -15 of these each time we gathered. He would use old tire inner tubes for the rubbers that he would have cut out before coming. We couldn't hit the side of a barn with those things, but we shot them until the rubbers weakened and broke. On rainy days, he still made them so that we could take them home with us and boy howdy did we ever. I learned what he was doing not so long before he passed but have since been unable to get out and forage for the right components for several years now. The love of shooting still grows wild to this day so one can imagine my excitement when I found your channel.

      What ? No airguns yet ? 😀
I've done archery from a very early age thanks to my father (back in the 1960s)... discovered airguns (prefer the spring-piston ones) in the 1990's, and firearms since I live in the country and live on a nice wooded lot, but airguns are much easier to shoot, indoors and outdoors, and ammo is much cheaper !
Got into slingshots last year (2023), and can easily shoot them indoors in my basement on my airgun range.
I was amazed at the advancement in slingshots since I was a kid... and so easy to recapture ammo with a nice catchbox setup that you can easily make with a nice size cardboard box !
I just bought some light 10mm plastic ammo and light bands from Simple Shot, mainly to keep squirrels from chewing up various patio benches and deck boxes... I don't really want to kill them, just scare them off with a light smack on the rear end... I would use one of my air rifles for killing them.

For a several reasons, I found that I really had to go lighter or give up the sport. Got .177 band sets from Simpleshot and am now enjoying slingshots again. Nathan is absolutely right, lighter ammo and smaller targets (can be frustrating to begin with) really improve your technique. Just like shooting a competition Air Pistol really improves trigger technique and follow-through for shooting real firearms.

But i found myself better with bigger size ammo like 13.5mm steel balls. They not super heavy, so they fly fast in half or full butterfly, they easyer to grip and easyer to see in flight and they also have more impact which makes the shooting more fun in my opinion.
But all people are diferent. I think each shooter have to find ammo and shooting style that he likes the most).

Aim small, miss small... so true. The aim point on a pie-plate is the same size as the one on a bottle-cap; the same is true of hunting deer or squirrels. People shoot much better once they discover/remember this. It's the rule that applies to all projectile weapons (and thrown objects).

I've come to the same conclusions as you voice here, my favourite setup is double green/blue theraband (UK based), speeds over 300fps (when butterflied), cheap ammo, 2 points for consideration is bandlife (can be really poor)and also more pronounced powercurve as bands warm up and wear compared to thicker bandsetz, I don't hunt but like trying my luck on cans at 30 yards plus.....

Long ago I saw sshot using medical tubes. The type used in hospitals. Is the rubber bands better?
When I was kid....we used tyre tube(interior)....we cut it in strips. The red type was best, its pure rubber. Then came black interior tyre tubes......50% rubber....50% synthetic butyl!

Depends on the size of the clay. 👊
Our new clay is a bit heavier and our 3/8 bandsets shoot it nicely. The 7/16 can be tuned in as well for power, but too much power sprays clay ammo everywhere!
