Calathea white fusion plant care and propagation

  • I finally gained some confidence in caring for this diva house plant (which I killed plenty of) and in this video share you the tips as well as a neat propagation method that is tried and tested. To summarise the care: Bright indirect light (dappled direct is fine), very airy fast draining soil, very frequent watering (never let the media dry out), group together with other plants for humidity. And if the plant reverts to all-green new growth (which happens a lot to me), its either too stressed out to push out variegations or is receiving not enough light.

    She is currently on the floor near a window, in indirect medium light, next to a humidifier set to 65% humidity and she looks just as good as when I bought her so far...I watered her lightly once when her soil was dry. I am nervous!!!

    From my own experience, they grow to bushy green monster under direct sunlight too. I have one huge pot, bought years ago, long before all this global plant craze, sort of abandoning them out there in the south facing garden (I don't know if that even matters with us in the tropics), can't even recognize them when I came back home. Tried to cut them bald, and put 'ajinomoto' as one of my plant sellers suggested, but well, they just stick to the shades of green, and rhizomes that only Hulk can seperate with bare hands.

    After watching your video, I repotted my newly bought white fusion in a lighter mix with more coir, perlite, vermiculite. Separated it into 8 plant grouped into 2 pots. But I noticed that they all had rather healthy roots without any sign of rot despite being grown in an apparently homogenous loose loamy black soil that is quite water retentive, so now I'm hoping mine are not going to die now after the repot :'( I repotted because I was found that the original soil was very moist via my usual preferred method of watering for most plants: via a wick leading into a water tray.
    Try blasting tangled roots with a bidet to clean off the soil, improve visibility of their separation, and also loosen them up, it always works when I want to separate clumps of plants.

    My calathea orbafolia hated me for 4 months but she has FINALLY acclimated. I have her in a self watering pot in medium light next to humidifier. The room is at 50 percent humidity. I snipped off all the brown edges. And she has pushed out 5 leaves with 2 growth points in the last month 😁

    thank you for the very informative video! my white fusion got brown tips and edges that feel dry and crispy to the touch. i thought it was caused by the lack of humidity, so i placed it outside grouped with other plants receiving bright indirect light. it's been more or less a week now since it's moved and a couple days ago it got rained on (i know it's my fault). now the problem is.... idk if it is underwatered (when it was still placed indoor) or overwatered (from the rain). how should i work around this? she gives me headaches i swear

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  3 года назад +1

      Hello it is hard to find out what happened to it... my advice is to give it a very fast draining/airy soil, and water it daily or twice a day (if outdoors). Bright indirect light is a must.

    Great content! I wish I had known this about 3 months ago! Do you know if you split and remove rhizomes that are replanted from the all green ones, if they also will be green, or will you get white fusions again?

    • @onlyplants

      The green top that you saved will put out green growth. But the rhizomes will put out baby white fusian leaves with the whites

    What?! That's so cool. I so have not seen that propogation method before. Are rhizomes unique to the white fusion or do all Calathea have rhizomes?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  3 года назад

      I have seen rhizomes on almost all my calatheas so I suspect they can be propagated this way too. Though the safest way may be to root divide them horizontally.

      Not very deep at all. The top portion of the rhizomes is maybe 1 cm beneath the potting mix. I keep it moist but not soggy... watered deeply once, and then lightly every day or every two days

    What should you do if the plant loses the purple color on the back? It's also been pushing out more white than green. Could this be a lighting issue? It's a few away from a floor to ceiling window. New leaves have a yellow-green tint to it, especially the white part, not sure if it's cause they are new leaves.
