6.0 CLEO Relay Revisited (Is Daybreak Bad?)

  • When Undead Labs released update 6.0 for State of Decay, some of the changes included improvements to CLEO guns by allowing more ways to obtain CLEO ammunition in larger quantities and at a more reliable rate... but is this enough to make the CLEO weapons worthwhile? It means having to periodically play the Daybreak horde mode to grind out the Prestige Points (PP) to spend on the ammunition.
    My analysis brings me to revisit the CLEO Relay, Red Talon Crafting Station, CLEO ammunition and CLEO guns to find out.

    Maybe I'm wrong. Are you a REGULAR user of CLEO guns? I don't mean you pull them out once in a while and shoot something. I mean you actively use CLEO guns and actively run out of ammunition to then go to the Daybreak game mode to restock. Let me know if you do.

      The CLEO submachine gun has a 128 round mag and a very high rate of fire. That means every mag you shoot is 15 minutes of Daybreak gameplay. I think Daybreak is a misguided attempt, by Undead Labs, to add a sort of "end game" mode to SoD2 and address the concerns that there isn't anything to do or there isn't any end game. This was definitely not the way to resolve it.

    I was pretty determined to unlock all the Cleo stuff, but all that grind man... And remember, some of the things, incluging the cleo relay, can only be unlocked by completing the final wave, which implies you win. Impossible playing alone, and the people you play with vary wildly in competence. So making it all the way to end is very much not guaranteed.
    In the end, I ended up installing wemod to give myself unlimited items. I would play solo, and have unlimited mines, so I would mute the game and listen to podcasts while every few minutes, I would go back onto the field and redeploy all the mines the zombies triggered.
    The thing that really pisses me off though, is that they can still change the reward system. In an update last week, they doubled the durability of all weapons and guns. So what's stopping them from just increasing the prestige value you get from daybreak? Or reduce the costs for cleo stuff? I would think, each daybreak should give like 5 000 prestige, enough to recruit a soldier and buy a facility. That way people would just have to play a game from time to time, but at least one game is guaranteed to buy even the most expensive thing once. Provided you make it to the end, of course.
    Because otherwise I actually kinda like daybreak. No it's not a new concept, but I wish my friends owned the game so we could play together. It would make for a fun evening of teaming up to gather cleo drops, repairing walls and focusing the juggernauts!

    • @ObjectiveEthics
      @ObjectiveEthics Год назад

      I agree 100% 👍. Playing Daybreak is a lot more fun when you play with friends or at least get lucky enough to get teamed up with competent people. The game mode requires teamwork to be truly successful.
      I grinded the hell out of it so I could build a 10 person Red Talon community and all of the facilities. Then I did the same thing on my wife's account but got super lucky because of cross play. I actually got matched up with a PC player who had the glitch activated and got all the hidden achievements and maxed out PP for completing that game.

    The Only reason I started playing Daybreak (I HATE grinding overall) was to unlock the Red Talon facilities and earn the Prestige to be able to try them out. I have started playing the regular game on Nightmare and am now seeing resource management and efficiencies are very important, to make the over all play through fun (For me of course).
    Great review Fox and I agree with your evaluation. While I was a total noob in Daybreak and my teammate carried me, I learned a lot and did halfway decent. I am trying to learn all the Deploy-able items and when best to use them. Over all Daybreak is very boring, that said, it has helped me to hone my skills and learn better ways to fight freaks without expending excessive ammo. ;)

  • @LetsPlayZombieGames
    @LetsPlayZombieGames 5 лет назад +3

    I have taken to regularly using CLEO weapons in Nightmare mode, which I suppose is a bit counter intuitive given they can't use suppressors. The Remote Rocket Pods are great for Blood Hordes with the 2 juggernauts, and the amount of CLEO ammo you can get in an hour from the CLEO relay beats looking for a 6 ammo rucksack just to get 55 7.62 bullets or 8 .50 calibers. My opinion on that may change once I get a trader installed as leader and can call an ammo trader, but for now calling the occasional CLEO drop is an easier source of ammo in a mode already stingy with ammo resources and drops.
    Juggernauts are a weird balancing act of "I can kill them with 10 CLEO ammo each using a Heavy Sniper Rifle, but then I'm carrying it around and using it for nothing but jugs. I can use Remote Rocket Pods, but then the efficiency of Prestige/Jug kills takes a hit"
    I honestly don't mind the grind of Daybreak because its a nice change of pace to the base game, and I can get either 1000 Prestige or watch how my team messes up what is a very simple game mode.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox  5 лет назад +2

      It's true that CLEO ammo is more accessible than regular ammo when you don't have a press. I take it you use the relay to call in ammo since you commented on the relay revisiting?

    • @LetsPlayZombieGames
      @LetsPlayZombieGames 5 лет назад +2

      @@GitGudFox I've been using the relay since making it is a little easier on prestige (1.5 to craft versus 2 to call a CLEO drop), but keeping my ammo resource up is a bit more important, and its 256 CLEO ammo in ~10 minutes versus 48 over ~8. The Cleo Battle Rifle has been good if I'm looking to pop head shots off quickly, and the Sniper Rifle is great for the situations you'd normally be using a .50 caliber for. If you're using scent block, the noise is secondary, since it will draw zeds to where you were rather than getting them to aggro you.
      The CLEO sieges haven't been that bad after the 1st one. 1st one had a pair of juggernauts, but after that its mostly been a few ferals. Not sure if I'm just getting lucky there or what.

    Hi there, I've actually watched some of your videos before, but this is the one that made me to hit the suscribe button without a shadow of a doubt.
    Well, the answer for your question is that there's actually a State of Decay 2 community focused on modding the game. Some of those mods allow you to complete Daybreak mode right after the intro scene, but sadly it won't count as like you've beaten the 7 rounds so you won't have the rewards nor the PP that a regular play would give you. There's another mod that gives you 65k PP for just completing the first wave. BUT the best mod that I think it balances all of this stuff, is the one which turns every PP cost into Influence cost.
    I don't know if you are with or against the matter of modding games, but that is one I'd recommend you to test it. It could be really good material for a video if you find that it's actually much worth it. If it's so, you can find the discord link searching on google, unless you're there yet.
    Greetings and keep the good job ^^

Tho I said I would NEVER play it LOL I just wanted to see if it was as bad as I thought it would be and I was and You are correct, daybreak is terrible. I thought I would at least be able to keep the items I still had in my inventory after the technician dies, which happened both times I played since I hate people and will NEVER play on line. (That NEVER will never happen 👍) So, I just modded in 9999 prestige points. My time, my life (I'm old), is more important, I'm not wasting my time grinding for PP. I just wanted a RT with hacking, and I got that on my 1st call. Then I got the RT officers quarters & crafting station for the mines, that's it. Like you said, the weapons are not any better than what is already in the game. The RT operatives, are OK, they have a lot of negatives. When I get low on PP, I just "add" some more. Completely agree. The necessity of having to leave your community to farm pp for ammo occasionally is very off putting. Smarter players have trader bases and convenience. Which is much preferred.
    However. 1 thing you might want to reconsider. The single only thing of merit I could even consider 'considering' (lmao) is... that the 48 clap rounds from the crafting mod on the Cleo heavy sniper, is technically a efficient use of time. STRICTLY only with the heavy sniper, and ONLY if killing juggs.
    This is because it takes 4 sniper shots to down a jug for finisher, and since in nightmare you can at best make only 8 50.ap rounds per ammo rucksack (175 influence) and can only get 3 ammo rucksacks every 50 or so minutes.. (that's basically rounded to 24 sniper rounds per hour, and 525 influence etc).. this does shine SOME light on the Cleo guns. Since, 48 rounds will get you 6 jug kills with the heavy, the same as a full hours worth of trade base converting . And assuming the cost is doubled, it woul only cost 4 ammo and some circuits. (So roughly 4-5 × 48 rounds per hour and 250 or so pp) it has just a small small amount of pay to win merit. Making starting a new nightmare game very easy if you buy a heavy sniper and crafting mod .
    But, again. Having to re farm pp every 4 hours is utterly ridiculous. And it costing circuits aswell further solidifies my choice to stick with the old faithful timberwolf. So really the only merit to daybreak weapons is using the heavy sniper in early days on nightmare up until you have your community set up. And never using them again.
    Side note, thank you for informing me about the bfg on community members, I have actually been trying to figure out what the best weapon to equip my community would be for the past week. I went from suppressed eternal gaurds, to devgru infiltrators with piercing to cleo blast rifles. And didnt once consider the bfg even tho I have 5 that I've never used. Cheers

      I think BFGs and a few DevGrus would be best. The DevGrus give your awful AI allies' accuracy a better chance to hit ferals which they other can't hit. In Nightmare Zone, the CLEO guns can be a lot more useful since you don't have everything you want (if you're starting fresh). For example, you can buy the CLEO Assault Shotgun to equip your allies with automatic shotguns in the beginning of the game which would drastically improve their ability to kill ferals. You could also do this with the heavy sniper. You could equip your allies with it as a way to combat juggernauts. You could also use it yourself. Some of the deployables might have use in Nightmare Zone. The little minelettes that the minelayers make kill ferals in 1 hit, so it could be a way to counter the feral trios if you know in advance where they are.
      However, it is still painfully boring to grind out the PP, and I eventually just gave up grinding more PP towards the end of my "Pay 2 Win" series. I just got enough PP to keep the CLEO transmitter available.

      @@GitGudFox yeh 100 %, and that support mod is amazing aswell. It's just a shame it costs pp instead of influence. And yeh those minefields are okay? But for the cost, idk. Counter point is, imo ferals in nightmare arent actually that big of an issue. The 2 zombies I have a issue with are armored zombie horders and juggernaughts. Juggernaughts becuase their are so few efficient ways to kill them , and melee is so dangerous if you get grappled. And armored zombies becuase you cant 1 hit them with ranged weapons. As I run around with a repeater crossbow or a suppressed rifle.. every other zombie in the game is no threat, including ferals since gunslinging exists and seeing 3 ferals running at me is typically just 180 influence for free.
      Do you think undead labs will ever adress some of these issues, because daybreak is a collosul failure in my eyes. Even they way the unlocks work, I finished my daybreak unlocks after 11 games, however I am now at game 25 and still havent finshed unlocking the last few items, it's so infuriating that after a perfect 45 minute daybreak i only unlock 1 item. Instead of 3. Completely agree aswell that daybreak should have had some scavenger type objective, where you could fortify or upgrade the walls, maybe make towers or make a building that makes ammo per minute or consumables. Perhaps 2 pop would defend the earlier waves while 2 scavenge, then layer on 3 and 1 , and in the last 2 waves all 4 defend.

Make it radomly generated what map gets picked, where you start at, how many zombies, plague hearts or both that you have to kill, maybe even sometimes fight hostile resistance NPC that hate red talon or something like that, then ultimately at the end call an evac and have a holdout moment in the area your calling for evac, that’d be pretty cool in my opinion. As a long time hardcore state of decay player,I agree that daybreak is too tedious, not good gameplay, and oh boy i have a lot to say about it. A biiig issue in addition to all the things you mentioned is that joining another player's daybreak lobby is laggy as hell and this is a big problem for me because nobody ever joins when I host. ( I rarely lag on every other game i play) here are a lot of thoughts after grinding through daybreak for a while, maybe you can relate to some.
    Daybreak is really not fun and a chore to solo, but I have soloed it before using a strategy but its even more tedious and involves constantly running around doing EVERYTHING for 40 or so whole minutes because the ai partners are really useless
    Playing with randoms is really painful because 1. the lag is so bad it is crippling even during the better matches and makes the zombies buggy 360 attacks even worse 2. randoms can either make daybreak really easy if everyone (or atleast most the players) know how to play, it is not hard at all but often times people will not know key things and get the technician killed..
    it frustrates me to no end when randoms:
    1. take repair kits but forget to use them which can doom the team
    2. they use basic melee for entire waves and they really dont pull their weight because they kill too slow, the agents in daybreak mode are not good enough at melee to warrant spam melee unless vs jug (blast rifle better still) in short, people who spam melee the whole time are detriment to the team imo except maybe not if they use that mace you use, it is actually good but other weapons are just badd
    3. they take all the ammo and waste it with full auto weapons and have bad aim (part of this may be the terrible lag)
    4. they take minefields, the most important item in daybreak imo and either forget to use them or deploy them on the wrong side of the wall
    5. they hoard all the bandages and forget to use them on the technician
    6. when people waste multiple repair kits on yellow walls
    the problems are so bad that my strategy is to stash the important items by dropping them in a corner and praying nobody finds them so I can properly use them when the time is right to win the game (wave 5 is most important) and also a tip to anyone who is trying to grind but is lagging, try using the wolverine shotgun for early waves since its spread will still swiftly kill through the lag ( I personally spawn in with a blast rifle, stash it secretly and take the shotgun from one of the bins until wave 5)
    really like your state of decay 2 content git gud fox, useful information and nightmare mode playthroughs :D

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox  5 лет назад +2

      One of the problems I have is that once people leave, you can't get people to stay. No one wants to join at wave 6 and stay. They immediately leave since every wave rewards a similar amount of PP. You basically join in at wave 6 to do more work for the same PP, so they just bail out which makes finishing the game harder.

    • @zeta5684
      @zeta5684 5 лет назад +1

      @@GitGudFox Dang that is annoying too. Personally since I join others most of the time, if I see a team is at wave 6 I stay because it gives me some confidence that they are not noobs and i hope they play another round, i feel like this is a smart way to think when joining since some days its hard to find competent people to play.

    Might need to revisit this again or make a comment did a full day break session have all the rewards unlocked and I got a total of 1,500ish? Possibly 1600 maaaybe 1700 though 1700 feels right prestige points, certainly much higher amount rewarded than before.
    Another thing on the cleo relay, the general drop costs with a mix of a random gun, ammo and a explosive or incendiary items, 512 prestige, while the cleo ammo drop only cost 512 (influence) now for a whole load of cleo ammo.
    Certainly cleo guns and possible cleo lethals are viable and not to costly to sustain now with the above changes.

    The only time you need cluster mines and other explosives is while playing daybreak. A few of the explosives don't pan out, by the time you throw them the jugg has moved and you have that small delay before you explode them. Even the CLEO guns don't have much of a purpose in the base game besides being able to get through the armor of a riot zombie. I don't want to say the devs did anything diabolical, there is no microtransations which is a good thing. I think they wanted to bring in red talon soldiers, and this seemed to be the way to do it because using regular influence would be to easy. Daybreak feels like it was thrown together, how many times have you seen bloaters and juggs can stuck on the rock cluster on the left of the fort. There are a total of 51 unlockables (If you count the fact that you have to get the weapons in daybreak before the main game) and if each full runthrough gives you 3, then to get all the unlockables, you have to play the mode 17 times. And if each play is approximately 1 hour, then to get everything it will take 17 hours. And by that point you'll have about 17,000 prestige. And you'll probably use up about 5,000 to 10,000 prestige to get all the weapons and facilities. So you'll have around 7 to 12 grand left. Which will get you about 3500-6000 rounds of Cleo ammo. I mean, for 17 hours, it doesn't seem too bad. And if you play once a day, then in 17 days, you could have everything plus some ammo. Of course, assuming you win every time and get all 3. Also, I'm assuming that all the red talon facilities are a buy once, keep forever sort of thing but I could be wrong. Also, this is just for one community but still it ain't too bad.

      The problem is that the game throws a wrench in the estimates.
      At about 50% collection completion, the game takes 1 of your unlocks away per game, so if you won 3 unlocks, you now won only 2.
      At about 75% collection completion, the game takes away 2 of your unlocks per game, so if you won 3 unlocks, you now only won 1.
      What's more is that you MUST get the other "taken away" unlocks to get your unlock. In other words, if you were 75%+ done and you got your wave 3 unlock then left, you'd get no unlocks. If you got your wave 3 and 5 unlocks and failed, you'd get no unlocks. If you jumped in late during wave 6 and got only the wave 7 unlock, you'd get 0 unlocks.
      You need to get all 3 unlocks to get even 1 unlock at the end of the progression.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox  4 года назад

      Nothing feels worse than being at the end of the collection where you basically have to play an entire game, and win, to get 1 unlock, and then you lose on wave 6 or 7 meaning you literally wasted about 40-45 minutes to get no unlocks.
      There's no safety net, no bad luck protection, nothing. And you're playing the same shitty game mode over and over again, and most of the experienced players are already done and gone leaving you either with the awful AI or noobs who are just learning how to play and can't hold their weight.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox  4 года назад

      In addition to this, if you have a player who drops out, you're probably not going to get anyone else.
      Since you MUST play a full game to get even 1 unlock, if someone jumps in to reinforce you at wave 4+ (past when you can get all 3 unlocks), they're just going to leave because helping you isn't going to get them an unlock.
      So the system encourages people to just abandon you immediately if you aren't able to get them all of their unlocks meaning you're probably screwed if 1 person leaves.

    Warframe you say? a man of tastes I see.
    As for the CLEO thing. Honestly haven't even got the DLC. Didn't seem all that appealing when I learned what it was. Looking here, the weapons seem a wee bit pointless as well. Head shots are indeed effective with any weapon. Plus you can just hop in a vehicle and play a quick round of bumper cars. Maybe if these guns and ammo had an added trait. Like Undead Labs continues with the whole plague zombie idea, but adds in stages. Normal weapons take longer to kill those stages, but these weapons and ammo make it easier. Weaponry to combat the progressing infection type stuff. Outside of a simple bullet and bumper.
    Granted I doubt many want to feel like they would need to buy the DLC to continue to be effective. But there are ways around that I suppose. Ah well, just a thought.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox  5 лет назад +1

      I think the best way to fix the CLEO guns is to make their ammunition not cost PP. What Undead Labs wants is to create a necessity to go into Daybreak to keep the game mode populated, but they're doing it in a way that is bad for the game by forcing you to do something you likely don't want to do. I doubt I will ever play Daybreak unless I need footage for a video.

    This points to something that bugs me about the game, there is a wide range of calibers but really all they variation does is require you constantly collect ammo to try and get what you need for the weapons you have. They might as well just had generic ammo for pistols and rifles, just as with shotguns, since the caliber used seems to be meaningless.
    Thanfully I finally found the pistol and rifle ammo bench mods which makes this a little less of an issue

    • @GitGudFox

      It's because of bodyshots. You can't kill zombies with bodyshots, so all that matters is hitting the head. It doesn't matter if you hit their head with the world's tiniest bullet or a humongous round. In the end, a head shot is a head shot.

      Git Gud Fox thanks. I know you can close the door manually, and I think they stay open until you close them if zombies break in, but when I'm running in and out for things sometimes they close on their own after a few seconds, of course this is if I didn't close it, but others they will stay open until I close them. Maybe it's just a glitch, but I wasn't sure if I was missing something.
      Two final questions, for now at least, sorry to be such a PITA. I'm set up in the fenced in warehouse, have 7 survivors and 5 outposts, power, water, ammo, fuel and one with two beds. I've got 47 fuel, plus an backpack, but am at -1 a day, 47 materials with 6 backpacks, and -2 a day, ammo at around 40 and -1 a day, food and meds are both around 20, but I'm now actually at +3-4 meds and +6 food a day and my survivors morale in great, it's halfway up the green section. My base has tier 3 infirmary, command post, workshop, warehouse and garden, two hydrponic gardens, a sniper tower, a top tier guard tower and a fancy barracks. Once I switched from a base generator to an outpost for power, and added the second hydrponics suddeny the base is almost on cruise control (i also found a trader with a pistol and rifle ammo press so now ammo for them isn't an issue either.) the only change i plan currently is chaning the second hydroponics to herbs once I build up a bit more food so I can start mass producing bulk plague cures to rebuild my influence, which these changes wiped out.
      So my first question is, I've only got 3 or maybe 4 plague hearts left, and whatever the builder legacy quests are, and still haven't finished looted out the area I'm in, so is there a reason to move to the lumbermill or fire station, unless it's to be in those areas for easier looting? Or should I just finish the game where I'm at, then start over with the builder boon!
      Second, one if my survivors has shown as "busy" for at least three in game days, and I can't find her around my base. I've searched online to see what it means but haven't seen a definitive answer, mainly just quesses and speculation, and most responses contradict the previous person's reason for it. Any idea?
      Thanks again for all your help, it's really appreciated, also thank you for all your great videos, they are not only fun and entertaining, but extremely helpful.

      Yes, this is a poorly conceived game mode. I suspect Undead Labs hope that this would be some kind of "end game" content since SoD2 doesn't really have an end game per se, but this was clearly an improper use of resources. You can't possibly combine a highly repetitive grind with stingy rewards and expect to get a positive result from it. They should have just created something like "Red Talon Influence" and added special Red Talon missions in the base game. Then, you wouldn't feel so divorced from your progression in the base game. You wouldn't have this feeling of "OKAY, time to stop doing what I want to do and start doing what Undead Labs wants me to do."
