  • On March 13th, Undead Labs launched the JUGGERNAUT Edition for State of Decay 2 which added both a new map AND a brand new weapon skill: heavy weapons.
    Originally hailing from State of Decay 1, they have finally made it into State of Decay 2 within the Juggernaut Edition patch.
    Fox steps up to the plate and takes a huge swing to give his first impressions on this new weapon style without any practice before hand.

    I want to emphasize that this is literally the first time I've used heavy weapons, so I had no idea what to expect. It'd not intended to be any kind of display of skill so much as just an organic first look... that said, I think I battled the feral at the end pretty well.
    Overall, I think losing the Powerhouse drop kick hurts a lot... consider I could have literally unequipped my heavy weapon and just dropkick/executed that feral at the end.

      Something I noticed that I think bears more testing is their application against Juggs. I noticed that every time you hit the Jugg from behind with the heavy weapon he staggered. Four times if I recall correctly. It might be that his belly acts as an armor of a sort from the front, akin to a shock absorber. I may be seeing something that is not there on this one, but I feel like that might be the niche they fill.

    Myself, I'm disappointed.
    They are decent at crowd control, but that's just it. They don't need to be DECENT at crowd control. They need to be EXCEPTIONAL at crowd control for it to be worth the slow speed and big stamina drains.
    Just not nearly enough damage to make it worth it. Maybe it will change when you max out striking, but the Heavy Weapons are just not enticing enough to pursue in my opinion.

    I now this isn't related to heavy weapons but I wish they'd get rid of the slow striking executions when having max skill in it. By that time I'd imagine the survivor is versed enough to just do the golf swing and pummel executions

    • @Peachrocks5
      @Peachrocks5 4 года назад +10

      This. This is the biggest reason I dislike using striking weapons. Which makes me sad, because in most games I prefer stuff like baseball bats to things like swords that everyone else likes, but with those damn slowass animations on top of their other problems, its just not worth it.

    • @FreedomFighterEx

      Yea, I wish the animation is sped up for maxed out skill. Execution in SOD2 is annoying most of the time due to that.

    • @GrubKiller436
      @GrubKiller436 4 года назад +3

      I agree. I dislike how you never know if your attack is gonna go for the slow one or the gold swing. They should at least increase the speed of the slower ones.

    • @Peachrocks5
      @Peachrocks5 4 года назад +3

      Yeah. I do think though them using the slow but desperate crushing animation makes sense when inexperienced. However skilling or maxing either endurance or striking should cause them not to use it. Much like how close combat on being skilled gets that excellent quick backstab animation rather than the slow strangle. I mean if you wanted it to mirror you could take away the golf swing for not having it skilled.

    • @jon6car
      @jon6car 4 года назад +2

      @@Peachrocks5 I agree for striking but not for endurance. If I had to make one tweak to endurance it would be to have enhanced close combat moves or a 5% decrease in weapon durability loss per hit. That way it would be a true jack of all trades skill. But specializing would still be stronger for specific skills. For instance if they had enhanced close combat moves they still wouldn't be able to execute standing enemies but a CQC specialist could.

      TLDR: use discipline to maximize efficiency, try to constantly attack so that they can't get within range of you, and if you need to disengage shove until you get an opening to hit because they will just interrupt you.
      Honestly heavy weapons are op in my opinion, I think you just have to get used to it. I only think they should prioritize getting a nearby ground execution I've standing because it's annoying when you accidentally do a standing execution. However playing with heavy weapons is easy mode on lethal zone. Discipline makes you tire very slowly too since it's such an efficient way to kill. I do just fine with the maul and axe but the groundbreaker shovel is completely op. It's has high lethality, high knockdown and high impact. Ever since I started using it clearing plague hearts on lethal has become so easy I can do 4 back to back because when the feral comes you just spam it and nothing can interrupt you. However don't run because it's so slow that you will have to regain the initiative to use swing again. If you need to run shove them the shove that replaces the kick is actually good because it's very fast and doesn't push them out of hitting range.

    I did some testing too. I found that they can stagger Jugs in one hit but ONLY if you hit them from the back. The best (or only) attack that left them open enough for me to get behind them was when they charged at me and I ran in a circle to dodge them. Unfortunately, my first test sucked and I switched to shooting the jug because I was using a Red Talon and kept rolling into him when I tried dodging. My second test was WAY better even with the same character because I ONLY attacked from behind. Best way to get them to charge is to run away right after.
    According to the patch notes, Acrobatics is supposed to have some heavy weapon moves as well but the only one I noticed was the jump attack (slightly less exaggerated with heavy weapons than the others). Again, I only used the red talon guy so there could be more attacks to use if just a pure acrobatics character.

      Probably, but that's the only reason you want a bigger weapon. No one picks up a sledgehammer to use as a weapon and thinks "I sure hope this does less damage than smaller weapons but makes me more resistant to damage."
      And I'm not criticizing your suggestion either. It'd make them better, sure, but that's just not why I want to use heavy weapons. Heavy weapons in SoD1 were fun because you could just chop through enemies with the correct setup. I you needed a character with the exclusive powerhouse characteristic which was something they just have or don't have. You can't promote into powerhouse, and then you combined that with the heavy weapons specialization, and you got this really awesome combo.
      What I wanted was a weapon that was honestly a bit OP if you combined the right skills and have the stamina support for it.

    Even as a brand new player coming from the Juggernaut Edition today with 3-hours playtime, trying the heavy weapon I found for 10-minutes I could clearly see and feel is a big fat NOPE, honestly what were they thinking, they do the same job as the regular melee but slower and much more precious stamina consumption, I was the same as you expecting stamina trade off for raw power - downing zombies with a single mighty swing and being able to carve out large groups if you watch your stamina. They seriously seriously need to make some revisions here, dunno how it released like this honestly, zero benefit.

Solo, I'd say it can cause more harm than good but still a fun and funny addition.

    Heavy shines with knock back.
    There are two good heavy weapons in the bounty broker right now that have really high knock back and super high durability. its really great for keeping XL hoard on their backs. One is called the Tank Hammer an the other is a huge wrench (sorry I cant remember its name rn).
    So far I havent found a good lethal heavy or fully built my heavy character.
    Im thinking Im going to go endurance for the fight so I have a way to command grab and Im going discipline for the extra light load limit so I can keep that stamina drain low

    I like using heavys with powerhouse discipline and endurance. Discipline for the stamina and melee cost and endurance to make it more forgiving. I look for the same stats as a good blunt weapon to take advantage of knocking a whole crowd on its ass and the wide swinging ground executions make clean up a breeze.

      @@GitGudFox i can do without the drop kick i don't have problems with ferals wielding a heavy. For the most part its the only combo that made sense, scouting won't benefit you that much if you're already looking for big hordes to clear out and resourcefulness doesn't really solve any problems you'll face using a heavy except for extra stamina consumables. It is a niche build but I've found it to be successful when I do have a hankering to use the heavy weapon in dread zone. Thanks for the feedback, keep up the great content 👍

    i noticed that when attacking more than one zombie most of them get knocked down and killed, so positioning is the best strategy whit this weapon, you want to get as many zeds whit one hit as possible, so they all go down, and the ground executions create a sort of safe bubble for a few seconds, so you can slowly clear a horde out if you want to play safe, i think it has a lot of potencial in the right hands

      I'm going to press X to doubt this. The final test demonstrated a lot of the flaws of heavy weapons.
      When you're using scentblock AND stimulants to swing through enemies, it's not a matter of skill but a matter of weapon statistics, and the heavy weapons were not cutting through them with nearly the capability one would expect them to.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox  4 года назад

      That was the entire point of the final test, to remove the skill requirement from the weapon by using the scentblock and the stimulants to take both the combat pressure and the stamina consumption out of the equation and just see what the weapon is capable of.
      Blunt without striking and bladed without swordplay both would have performed better.

    - It breaks easy so knife is your backup.
    - the CC shove gives you space for a charge hit on heavy weapons also a good replacement for the heavy cross push [damages your durability too].
    - Charge hit is a cone shaped cleave
    - Tap is more cleave effect
    - 2nd charge, it short dashes to the nearest target.

    There is definitely something going on with 2h attack animations. These zombies are doing an insane amount of standing around, and they very obviously pause en masse when you're swinging and executing. They do this with some executions, sometimes, with the standing swords. It's almost as if the game is giving you I-frames in the form of the enemy AI pausing.
    Madness.

    @FreedomFighterEx 4 года назад +3

    Right, I fiddle around with heavy weapons for a while and here is my conclusion; they are blunt/edge that a bit more complicated to play and require some setup so you can't ungabunga them like usual. The main gimmick that it has where the first two don't is how it can deal damage during execution, provide that the game randomize the swing execution for you (it usually do from what I testing. You only roll the quick head stomp if there are no other zeds around) so you gotta play to it strength. You can't be interrupted by zed attack unlike the first two so do your best try to execute the one that lay down in the middle of a horde. However, this is seriously a bad idea to do it in Nightmare or in a swarm of blood plague zeds. You asking yourself for trouble by doing it. Heavy weapons are great until you spec into either Striking or Swordplay. Striking give your blunt Grand Slam which capable to knock zeds in 180 degree of your front down and you can spam it faster than heavy weapon can swing. Swordplay outright one-shot zed with high enough lethality. Heavy weapons are ok-ish in the hand of AI follower. AI can set you up for knockdown execution so there is that, and stamina usage mean nothing to them.
    If you're insisting on using heavy weapons, here is something you should know. The cross-check attack (kick/jump button) is faster than kick and it can interrupt zed easily. It also lunges you forward nearby target which can help cover the distance since normal attack won't move you toward the target. You should use it to poke/rush-in during a fight or you won't get your swing off due to zed attack you faster than you can swing. Go for execution as much as possible. It drains you a lot of stamina but it doesn't need stamina to use it. You can spam execution in quick succession even if your stamina is depleted, and if you get the position right, you will keep knocking down nearby zed for another execution.
    Should you go for Powerhouse? Yes, absolutely if you can. It is no brainer pick. Maxed out also allows you to do the frontal execution like how maxed Close Combat does (Disappointed how it doesn't have unique animation) and frontal grapple which let you throw a zed into other zeds, bowling ball them down. Acrobatic give you Flying Strike which lets you become more mobile with it. It is pretty fun to use, but we all know how horrid the dodge roll is, so if you can deal with that then go ahead. Backpacking isn't a bad choice either. Yes you don't get the reduce melee cost but when you have almost twice more stamina to use then it doesn't matter. It also allows you to use a heavy weapon with a large backpack, and a heavy gun without over-encumbered yourself. You can pair Backpacking with Discipline since it gives you more stamina, reduces durability loss per melee hit, and more light carry cap in case you're a fan of traveling light. Endurance gives you Slam Attack for easy access to downing a zed. GIve you more room and option on how you setup for execution swing.
    TL;DR, Heavy weapons are more complicated to use than Blunt/Edge for little to no advantage over them once you spec into Striking/Swordplay. AI followers use it well. Poke a zed with cross-check (kick) before going for a swing. Pick Powerhouse if you can but it isn't essential. Acrobatic or Backpacking work wells with heavy weapons, and Discipline, and Endurance.

  • @likeablekiwi6265

    they should replace the shove with a forward charge instead knocking multiple zombies a few paces back...
    they should also have a combo attack move which makes the second swing able to hit zombies from behind and a third which makes your character go a distance forward... the knockback feels a out of place since you want them tightly packed together although maybe it could work if they also interrupt zombies on the back of the horde from charging at you and grappling.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox  2 года назад

      The problem is that heavy weapons are not lethal enough. I don't want to spend 4 hits on a zombie with a gigantic double bladed axe, but I do on a regular basis even on powerful RT characters.
      In SoD1, heavy weapons were like 100% blunt weapons + 100% bladed weapons at the cost of using up a ton of stamina and being slow enough that zombies can interrupt you if you aren't careful.
      I want to like heavy weapons. They were my favorite style in SoD1, but they just kind of suck for every day usage in SoD2. Their best use is demolition on plague hearts which they are pretty good at.

    the reason you lose the drop kick when you max POWERHOUSE is because you are using a heavy weapon . read what it says in the brackets(cross check with heavy weapon) which means if you are using a heavy weapon, it means you wont be able to use the drop kick anymore. you got to use a different weapon if you want to use the drop kick. i know it still doesn't make any sense to allow us the drop kick , but at max level , is unable to use it.
