VI, VII, VIII, and X are the top 4 most popular of the franchise. Everybody loves the story of VI and VII - they say that VI's Kefka is arguably the greatest FF villain ever. VII is loved for how deep the story is and how detailed the gameplay is. VIII has sort of a sappy storyline but it's an incredibly beautiful game and still very deep. X is very rich like VII, though were VII is dark and serious, X is upbeat and lighthearted. Hope that helps you choose! If you play VIII, don't grind levels.
4,6,7,9, and 10 are the best in the series. Which one I'd suggest as the first to play of those would depend on what kind of things you like. But any of those would be an excellent choice.

so as far as i can understand the games are not all cronologically connected but the story sas there are more different worlds and so a seperate story for each of the games.
final fantasy 9 is like the new games mixed with the old its the last midevil ages type ff its my favorite im on the 3rd disc 1 more to go then im getting ff8 on sunday!!!!!! hopefully

ohh its was a ps2 tech demo done in 1999 as it shows and it was a vid of the( you probblay know it already) the dance scene in ff8 but in real time to show what ff8 would look like on the ps2

One of the things I like most about FFX is that you can craft your own legendary weapons. It's not easy, but it's more than possible.

@kash33 FF12 also has a sequel, "Revenant Wings" for DS. And there's another FF4 on wiiware but i don't know exactly if it's a continuation.
