I found it on accident and didn't know at first that Richard was from Haken. The parallels are definitely there and the album is so amazing, a very good listen indeed.
I’m from Chile and I was at that show 4 years ago. For me, it was one of the best concerts of my life. I was a big fan of Dream Theater and Mike Portnoy introduced me to Haken. Now they are my favorite group by far and Virus my top 1 album of all time. I miss them, hopefully they can visit South America again. Greetings from the other side of the planet. Thank you very much Doug for this great interview.
You can genuinely see Hen enjoys talking about his influences within his music and he loves how he can formulate a juxtaposition with the layering. I would love to be a fly on the wall if you hangout with Hen and/or the guys from Haken on tour.
Thanks Doug, Richard is a lovely guy ... I can't tolerate egocentric/self promoting bastards and he just seems to be down to earth ... will buy their complete back catalog hopefully on vinyl! Hmm, wonder if they are interested in releasing a box set?
Richard is the result of great parenting. His father, who has now passed, was extremely supportive from day one. Richard is an example of what great parenting could be.
South Americans loving prog is one of the great mysteries for me. Every time I'm listening to Neal Morse on youtube, there are so many comments in Spanish. Super cool that this great music reaches all over the world, but I haven't heard very many great prog bands coming out of South America. I can only think of like 3 or 4 that I've heard.
Been a fan of Haken for years, and recently discovered Richard’s solo album as well. Just really a tremendous talent, and very cool to see him in this laid back interview. Great work Doug on doing your research and putting him at ease with your thoughtful questions. Really well done. And I can’t wait to see them this year in Philly!!
Great interview! Saw them live twice and got tickets to see them again in May! Most recently I saw them open for Devin Townsend in early 2020, and after Cockroach King, someone near me said to their partner "I just ordered all their albums for us off Amazon, these guys are great" which was awesome to hear. Also Doug with that excellent taste, Bound By Gravity is an S-tier song that I too would love to hear live!
Doug, listen to the Messiah Complex end to end. Its truly a masterpiece. I just saw them live in Manchester and they played the whole thing. Quite remarkable.
Great interview! Lovely fellow. More interviews please. If or when you choose to go down the Fish(Marillion & solo) rabbit hole you could probably get him for an interview. Members of the band IQ (they've been around for forty years and have a remarkable body or work) are RUclips interview friendly as well. Thanks again! 😎👍

Love, love, love HAKEN! The guys are so sweet and massively talented. Richard speaking of the tour before COVID with Devon Townsend made me so sad...that show was the first (of many) that were cancelled because of those lockdowns. I remember thinking, "what the heck? For real? They really think it's that serious??!!" Little did we know...
I just listened to crystallised for the first time. My immidiate reaction was "this sounds like Gentle Giant", just over 2 minutes into this interview and my suspicions are confirmed 😂
Haken is something else! Awesome band, who can go from Progressive Black Metal to Thrash to trippy Rock and even ambient and djent - often in the same song.
I love that point about the rhythms not being a conscious choice and just something that feel cool. I bet Ray disagrees when he hears these rhythms and thinks "ah man.. now I gotta figure out the drums for that.."
You did NOT pay Cockroach King at the Crowfoot in Pontiac. And I was waiting for it. But I love Falling Back to Earth, so you played that as the opener.
You should REALLY cover "Pareidolia" from The Mountain. It's astonishing, you already covered the Cockroach King track from it and that one isn't as good as this one imo (music wise, lyrically the Cockroach King is way better).
13:19 im Dieing :D:D:D:D richards whole sentence is just cutting out and Doug is just there smiling and then says wonderful after not hearding a single word> LOL
His solo album "The Cocoon" is absolutely stunning!
Highly recommended!
Also recommend checking out his Jazz Fusion group Nova Collective if you haven't already.
@@Arrow2theACL it's an AMAZING record!

Now I get why I just loved this band on first listen. Really an amazing collection of talented people.
Cheers Doug! Thanks for this! Love Haken and this is a well timed interview.

And now you should do Richard Henshall's: "Twisted Shadows".
Thanks Doug! Richard is a great interview, Cockroach King was my introduction to Baken ;) Completely hooked from then on!
"The Mountain": a masterpiece.
Doug,
I don't have a telegraph account
I love Richard's music! Can't wait for his new solo album, the two tracks he played at the Strandberg show were awesome!
I'm just coming home from the show in Hamburg and they absolutely rocked it. You're in for a treat later this year, Doug!
I just found the Nova Collective and its awesome if you're into jazz fusion

Played Cockroach King 4 million times? That's 36 million minutes of absolute bliss. I mean I can think of worse ways to spend 36 million minutes.
Coolest bunch of guys ever.
Been waiting for this

I got to see them in New Orleans right before the Pandemic in March 2020.. what an absolutely awesome show
