Definitely not a surprise Lol... I first heard of these guys thru a Facebook post by Jordan Rudess 🙂
They remind me of DT before they made their millions. So much energy and creativity.
I just recently started listening to these guys, and the DT influence was immediately apparent, and strongly, to where if someone had told me it was new DT, I wouldn't of questioned it until I realized the keys weren't so intrusive.

It's strangely satisfying to find out that a guitar player from your favorite band listens to the same stuff you do.
When it's time for Haken riffs he says "I'd better get my other guitar" Lol and out comes the beast with extra strings and squiggly frets... 😃
Haken has become my favorite band ever since I was first introduced through Vector. I adore every album released so far and am waiting ever impatiently for Virus.

Underrated band and incredible guitarist.
You can tell the measure of a musician, by how they speak about other musicians. Richard giving praise to everyone from Hendrix to Skynyrd shows he's a real student to his craft. Haken-Virus is a testament to how creative and proficient these boys are. Hands down the best album of the year so far, and the one to beat. They do a killer live show as well.
I saw Haken Last November with Devin Townsend in the Markthalle in Hamburg. They blew me away, what a great live band!

Erotomania is the riff I play when warming up for a gig or recording. Such a great fingering exercise. Rich is such an ace player.

I love how he's playing One, probably one of the most recognisable intros of all time by a huge, huge band, and it sounds like Haken. What a really unique and characteristic clean tone
That Carousel riff... Astonishing.
If you like any of the artists that Rich is (very cleanly) emulating here, go listen to Haken. My favorite thing about them (and Richard's playing) is their ability to tap into all of these influences to create something truly fresh. One of my favorites for sure!

I had the same path to prog metal. I used to listen a lot of hard rock back then Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd and Jimi hendrix was my favorite musician. Then I start to listen more Metallica, Iron Maiden and Nirvana Alice in Chains. Mid nineties a friend of mine told me you have to listen this band. And they were Dream Theater.

Richard is one of my favourite guitarists! His recent solo album was also a mind blowing musical journey and one of the top releases from last year!
Rich is covering a lot of ground of inspiration here... showcasing the large array of influence prog musicians have. Love it

same here. I watched them live few weeks ago and it was an amazing show, but co-main concert sucks. 70 min are not enough for a thirsty Haken fan. I hope they come again on tour promoting the new album but this time with an own headlining Tour.

The wall was incredible live in the day,Jimi Hendrix was next level,Growing up listening to our parents music & learning music from visuals not reading was how it starts.The 70s,80s,90s & early 2000’s were legendary for Music.And Justice for all & dyers eve is legendary.The good dark days of Metallica.

@@Curious-Irish-Angel You should look him up. His solo album has some superb solos and riffs and his work in Haken is brilliant. Really good player that perfectly blends jazz, fusion, prog and metal elements in his playing. Super underrated imo
