In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the music of British Prog-Metal band Haken. I have really enjoyed getting to know this band and their music, and today I'm listening to their epic Messiah Complex. It's from their 2020 album called Virus. The song (at 17 minutes and 5 inter-connected sections) takes the listener on quite a journey. Come along for the ride!

Seeing this track live was ultra exhilarating! The entire venue yelling "Hail to the King!" at the top of their lungs gave me chills!
I'm sure Doug caught the Cockroach King motifs, but it really is gratifying being able to recognize all the call backs included in this epic track!
IMO the most important prog-rock band on Earth, of the last 15 years, without a doubt
@Doug Helving - the last movement is called "Ectobius Rex" which is literally Latin for "Cockroach King"

I saw Haken live for the first time last week in Toronto. They somehow manage to be even better live.
Last year they did the whole Messiah Complex live! I just saw An Evening with in Indy last week and again blown away by them.
Yep they did the Messiah complex in the previous Toronto show, to end the show. It was incredible, as was the most recent show 🤘
I've seen them on their EU tour last year, where they also played this in full length. Mind-boggling!
Haken may be the best band working at the moment.. Yes, I am aware of Periphery, Riverside, Bent Knee etc, but there is something with Haken, especially earlier Haken, that really rules!!!!
My favorite Haken song! Love it so much. Marigold -> The Sect transition will always be one of if not the coolest transition I've ever listened. And Ectobius Rex riff is the nastiest Haken riff to me.
Yeah, When 'The Sect' kicks in, there is no way you're not gonna bang your head.

My first listening of this group. Wildly impressed by the guitar discipline. Great stuff by the rest of the band.
Gotta hand it to ya Doug, you really know how to get me into some killer new music. I haven't been in a metal mood in months, you just ripped me out of my no-metal slump with this one, this band really knows what they're doing sonically speaking! For such a heavy band, I love how I can hear the bass being punchy and heavy as hell! Everything is fantastic! Thanks again Doug!!!!!

They way they write and synergize their musicality thorughout their whole instrumentation (including vocals, obviously) is just mezmerizing. This is just art, and I am all here for that!

Always great seeing Haken! If you would like to listen to similar Bands I'd suggest "Nospūn". They just released their debut Album "Opus" last year and it's a concept Album comparable to Dream Theater's "Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory", so maybe that would be a candidate for a full Album reaction. As a single Track I'd suggest either "The Death of Simpson" or "Earwyrm", but considering there's a continuous story that's being told (and an Overture), I'd save it for a full listening.

I love the attempts to decipher the story, and you made some pretty insightful connections, but without analysing the entirety of Vector and Virus there's just no way you were gonna get the whole picture. The Messiah Complex is the culmination of two whole albums based on Haken's singular most iconic song, the Cockroach King.

Besides the obvious Cockroach King and vector/virus callbacks in Messiah Complex, there are also some other ideas that are revisited. Such as Ectobius Rex opening riff being a different key of the Shapeshifter opening from Visions. :)

Saw Haken last spring. Great show and surprisingly diverse audience! My fave tracks are still from The Mountain. If you haven't yet, check out Falling Back to Earth and Pareidolia. Both heavy, epic tracks over 10 minutes long.

This is excellent, and thank you. I first heard Haken through your channel, and I wanted to recommend this piece for a listen soon after I heard it some time ago... mostly for the Cockroach King references. I have always loved the Metal Monday concept. There is also much to discover also with Mastodon. Mastodon Mondays? Just putting it out there.
Doug, "A Cell Divides" is the last song on their album Vector. In Ectobius Rex, at the 2:44 mark, that part is a call back to the first song on Virus called "Prosthetic". It's from the middle section of Prosthetic (2nd half of the guitar solo section). Very cool stuff!

This was my first exposure to this group and will say I found them very interesting! I have never been much of a fan of Heavy Metal like Iron Maiden and groups like that, but this one got my attention!
They're truely amazing and creative musicians. Dont miss them out.

This is very much on the heavier end of their music, so you should give them a further listen. The Mountain seems to be a favorite among Prog Rock fans.
Great breakdown on this epic piece! Glad you get to see their "Evening with" set. I saw it in Fort Worth this past week and it was fantastic! It was my second time seeing them live and they were even better than the first time I saw them. You will have an absolute blast.
I've seen Haken three times now, the most recent of which was this past Wednesday in Cincinati... As if you don't already know, you're in for a treat! They played a really great setlist!

I had never heard of Haken until I saw them at Progpower USA in I think it was 2014. Wow! Seems like it was yesterday.
Also, the year before, I saw a band, also the year before, I saw a band called Leprous; by the name I expected garbage. I was so wrong. They were phenomenal. If you haven't heard them, I highly recommend them.
It's interesting because all the other bands were people I knew of but these became two of my favorite bands of all time.

Some of the callbacks to Vector, especially in Ectobius Rex suggests that the Cockroach King may also be the patient in The Good Doctor.

That was a cool experience. This was the first reaction video I watched with you where I hadn’t heard the song before. Normally i have the piece memorized. So hearing you pick up on things quicker than I was, was really fascinating!
Wow this is timely, because I just saw Haken live last night!! The whole concert was awesome, but Ross Jennings and Raymond Hearne were especially on point.
Saw them in Indianapolis last week! You are in for a treat. I was exhausted by the end of it, there was just so much going on! Definitely one of the most memorable concerts I've been to. And kinda funny to watch people try and headbang to the odd time signatures 😆
I saw both "An Evening With Haken" shows in Southern California earlier last month - 6 hours of prog over two nights. Never heard a better setlist in my life - back to back was just so delicious. And this was after seeing Which One is Pink? tribute band and then Tool twice a few nights later. 5 prog shows in 7 nights. It was a lot but oh so damn worth it.
An Evening with Haken was amazing, saw it in Fort Worth. Also seen them with Symphony X, Leprous, and Devin Townsend, always great show.
Disturbed's Bad Man is another reflection of the darkness of our world right now.

My first listen to this song was wild because the whole time I kept asking myself "why do I know these melodies already" then the cockroach king part hit and I all of a sudden understood.
Seeing this live last year with people moshing throughout the whole thing was an absolute highlight to me, in a year where I went to more shows than any other year. I've been hoping to hear your take on this one for a while!
Doug, always enjoy your perspectives and breakdowns of excellent prog metal! I too will be seeing Haken again this tour, next week! (got to se them twice last year,looking forward to hearing the entire fauna album, so I had to go again;)) Would love to hear you analyze any tracks from that record, esp Elephants Never Forget, and maybe even Eyes of Ebony.
...Another great record recently released is Caligula's Horse new masterpiece "Charcoal Grace" I hope you'll take the time to delve into the lead and end tracks from this excellent record, "The World Breathes With Me" and "Mute" - callbacks from each other abound there as well ;) enjoy!

But dude, you HAVE to give a try to Charlie Griffiths's solo album, Tiktaalika. It's a treasure trove of metal callbacks. The man knows his "classics", and it's a delight from start to finish.
Some more vague speculation, I think the Ivory Tower is almost referring to the spinal column. The first cervical vertebrae is referred to as Atlas (pulling us back to the metaphors of The Mountain, Atlas Stone, Cockroach King, etc)

This song just gets Vector and Virus + Cockroach King together, blends it into one epic song (well 5 songs but you know), and it is amazing start to finish.

I would really love to see your reaction to a song by vildhjarta, especially their newer songs are extremely interesting in my opinion. They took a lot of inspiration from Meshuggah and definitely take some time to really get into, which is why I don´t think that you would really like their sound. Nevertheless I would be really interested in your opinion on their music
Pete Rinaldi is a monster of a guitar player. He played in both Headspace albums, and I suggest also these ones for listening and eventually a reaction

I saw Haken at Download last year, they were absolutely brilliant. Had it not been for Metallica headlining, Haken would have been my absolute highlight.

Here's a fun little fact about the title of the last section: "Ectobius" is a genus of cockroaches, and "Rex" is latin for king, which means that this bit of the album is named "Cockroach King", just in a slightly disguised way.
The shimmering of the voice reminds me of Psychotic Waltz, but they are much less prog.

Don’t sleep on vector. The first half of the album is slightly underwhelming, but the last four songs on the album are absolutely incredible and imo some of the most underrated pieces in their discography.
Part V: Ectobius is a type of cockroach, and “Rex” direclty translates to “King” from the latin language. Cockroach king. edit: part V not IV. I can't count 🙂. Double Edit -- @svecticus said that below. Maybe I should read the comments before commenting LOL
