Im 61 and tonight will be my third night with my CPAP. I live in So California. I was fortunate to receive an hour’s long orientation with a Resp Therapist who gave me a lot of info and some time for questions. I found myself a bit depressed . Iappreciate the encouragement to change my mindset. My husband has been supportive. I have two grandbabies so there’s no reason to be negative. Night #1 was a bit rough. Night #2 was notably easier. Tonight is Night 3! I wish everyone out there who’s new to this list of patience and luck.

Just finished my first week with cpap. It was all so awkward at first, the tubing, the pillow mask, going to the bathroom, sort of depressing. But, here I am, a week later feeling like a pro. I’ve been a side/stomach sleeper my entire life, I’m getting used to back sleeping just to manage the tubing better. I really appreciate your videos, and all the people that comment, it is encouraging and I don’t feel so alone.
    Thank you!

You’re a hero. Thank you. I just started my CPAP therapy and the nasal mask was blowing far too hard for me (even with the high and low set to 4.0 - the lowest the machine goes) and was causing a panic attack.
After listening to your video, I decided to just wear the mask without turning the air pressure on, which I found was actually still blowing a gentle air through it, and decided I would try that for the first few nights instead. No doctor talked me through it, the resmed agent didn’t explain things to me, I had no one to go to about it. Other videos were nice and all, but not really helpful. Your video immediately calmed my nerves, stopped the panic attack I was fighting and I finally could wear my nasal mask comfortably.
    Thank you so much.

I was so negative about this. It looked and felt uncomfortable at first, but I controlled my breathing and settled down and the next couple of days it felt so relaxing. I feel so much better and my body feels so refreshed when I wake up. For those who are just beginning and contemplating CPAP, it is hard and intimidating at first, but it’s so worth it. Think about your long term health as the end result.

Nick, I'm so grateful for you and this video. Like others have described, I was intimidated by CPAP therapy and your calm, reassuring, genuine demeanor and advice really helped me. "Get your head on right" and "Be persistent" were great. And your Australian accent made it even better. Many times during my first week, when the mask was annoying me during the night and I wanted to rip it off, I heard your voice saying "be persistent" and so I stuck with it, rolled over, and ended up getting a great night's sleep. I've now used it 17 out of 19 nights and can't imagine sleeping without it. I'm not exhausted the next day like I was before, and it's made it easier to do my job. Thank you so much.

My wife had been telling me I stopped breathing in my sleep for like three years now and I finally relented to a sleep study. Having a doctor tell you your oxygen dropped to 70% only got like five minutes of rem sleep a night is eye-opening. I love my CPAP machine, took to it like a fish in water. They started me with an N 30 mask but I switched to a P 10 and I'm much happier.

Been on a machine for 18 months and i must say its changed my life. I went into it with a positive mindset. And its been easy to adapt. I found a new partner and was unsure she would like the idea of it but she has been great and wants me to be fit and healthy so it works for us both in that way.
I know plenty of people that say its so inconvenient but honestly being tired 24/7 is inconvenient and not to mention bloody dangerous.
I accept that i need the machine to live a decent life and i even use it in my caravan.
Thanks for your positive thought on the use of a cpap machine.

Hi Stevie, haha, i can picture that! Yes it certainly is. Very unnatural cpap therapy as it totally changes the breathing pressure from negative to positive and as such your breathing will take time to adapt. The trick is to be consistent and have a positive, determined state of mind. After 4 weeks it should start to be a bit easier but you need to keep learning. Good luck! Nick

I've been using mine for five nights, and the biggest problem I'm having is that my face, the parts where the nose-piece sits is sore if I press on it. But if I loosen the straps it wont stay in place. I figure that soreness is a small price to pay for the so-much-improved sleep I'm getting.

odds are I have had problems with it since I was in my early 20s. It is one of those vicious cycle things too... never having enough energy to make it through a 10hr day of classes/labs/work/adult life and have enough in the tank to want to exercise + throw in some moderate depression led to a more and more sedentary life style which leads to more weight gain and worse sleep apnea :(

I did a sleep study a month ago and found out I have sleep apnea. Had apnea for awhile but it caught up with me and it interfering with everything in my life. The doctor hooked up a cpap to me and I got severe anxiety as it didn't feel natural and after I lay there being positive I actually slept for maybe 5 hours. The best 5 hours of sleep I've had in a year. Downside is finding out I have apnea during the cpap shortages. It's very bad timing. Anyways I found your videos as my doctor was talking about the Resmed 11 and I'm trying to learn all these things before so when I do finally get a cpap machine I cam overcome so of the difficulties in starting therapy. thanks.

Love this. I’m a few weeks into cpap and everything he says is true. Getting your head right is the first big step. Mask fit is a big thing. Everyone pushed me for a nose pillow and I’m a mouth breather so that was never going to work. I love that my tube comes off the top of my head so it’s never in my way.

    • @CPAPReviews
      @CPAPReviews  4 года назад +8

Hi Melissa, thanks for your comment and feedback. In all fairness i do try and 'push' people towards the pillow and nasal masks in the beginning as in the long run they are much easier and more enjoyable to use however i do understand that they're not for everyone. I do recommend that people try very hard for the first 2-4 weeks to try and get use to sleeping with the nasal variety before switching to the full masks. Majority of patients with OSA are mouth breathers by nature because they struggle to get enough air in due to the restriction however i find most can still breathe fine through their nose, once the restriction is treated with the positive airway pressure. Thanks again, hope you're well and good luck with your therapy. Nick

You will not necessarily be on it 'for life' and i do feel that in the next 5-10 years there will be lot of advanced therapies developed to treat Sleep Apnea. In the mean time, the CPAP will give you a great, healthy night sleep and will be great for your health and well being. It will take some time getting use to it so don't be too discouraged if it's a bit difficult in the beginning. It gets easier with time but you do need to work at it. Hope you and your family are safe and well :). Dios bendiaga

It took me at least 3 weeks to really get comfortable sleeping with it. It lasted about an hour the first night and progressively improved in the ensuing weeks until I was using it all night with no disruptions. I found motivation in the fact that I’d paid a lot for it and wasn’t going to let that go to waste. I also found motivation reading about the other potential health issues that sleep apnea can cause. My struggles weren’t with the pressure, but with the claustrophobic feeling from the mask. I found that the Dreamwear nasal mask really helped since it’s configured to go under the nose and has nothing in front of you eyes and face. That was four years ago and I haven’t missed a night without it since.

I've been doing the CPAP struggle for 6 weeks now. I was diagnosed 11 months ago and waited this long for equipment and training. Now Resmed's choice of internet suppliers prevents online feedback to my app or to the MD or to the supplier to prove my hours of use (for insurance). I wish I saw your "persevere video" and comparisons of full face hybrid mask video and many of your other educational videos MUCH earlier!! I was ready to give up many times. I've had the nasal pillow, then the full face mask. I experienced some claustraphobic episodes and cannot keep it on. My pressure was set by the doctor at 10-20 Auto. Blowouts awaken me about 6 times nightly. I'm exhausted! Now my pressure has been reduced by the doctor. I will continue to push my unresponsive supply company and drive my machine 20 miles weekly to get it to give me a report. Now they are offering to swap out my Airsense 11 and my masks for a better fit if I drive 200 miles for in person. I will persevere because of you! Thank you!

Hi there, welcome to the channel and thanks for sharing your first experience with cpap therapy. Sorry to hear it wasn't a positive one however you're certainly not alone in that regards. CPAP therapy is a bit of a journey and the first few steps of the journey can be very very challenging. It's completely unnatural to breathe this way which is way there's an adjustment period where our body needs to time to acclimatise to the positive airway pressure. For some it can honestly take 1-2 months to get comfortable sleeping with the equipment but if you speak to any of those people they will tell you straight up that they are now having the best sleep of their life. Your job is a real simple one! Keep a positive, determined state of mind and just keep putting it on and practicing each night. Your body will take care of the rest. Good luck and you can always message me if you need any help or advice. Take care. Nick

I just left a comment before listening to your entire video. Health coverage might work differently in other countries. I have good health insurance (Anthem Blue Cross), but I don’t have the freedom to switch from mask to mark as I’d like. Tonight is my third night. I’m pretty sure I’ve lucked out with a “pillows” nasal mask that seems to be working well so far. My ResMed CPAP machine can be adjusted only by my doctor. Mine does have a “ramp” feature in which it starts at a setting of “4”, then, once I’m asleep, the machine will gradually increase up to my prescribed “10”. After watching this video, I’m thinking I need to get to know my machine better. I want to be as successful as possible.

I know you posted this a while ago, but I just started using a cpap machine due to extreme sleep apnea.
I am feeling incredibly frustrated. The company I got my cpap from did not fully explain things. And now that I’m having questions & issues, it seems like I’m bugging them. I’m on the verge of tears & I’m not much of a self pity crier. 😅
Anywhoozle, this video really helped to calm me down. So, thank you. ❤

    1. Change your mindset to a positive one relative to CPAP.
    2. Start at low pressure levels and build up over time. It may take months to acclimate.
    3. Find a well-fitting mask.
    4. Be persistent and consistent with CPAP use.

Thank you so much. I just started on a machine 5 days ago. I had no idea what it was actually going to be doing. Everyone I know that knows someone says it made such a difference for them and they love it. So, even though I wasn't looking forward to it, I was hopeful. I've made it thru 1 short, but full night. But the next night was tough. I had no idea it would be exhausting, that I'd feel like I have to fight for breath. I guess I was struggling for breath all along, but I was asleep and never knew. Now, I know and it's SO frustrating. So, I'm just looking online to see if it's me or the process. You explain it very well and I'm feeling better about myself. Still frustrated this is needed.

You’re so right Nick the mask is key - my sleep lab had me trialing about 10 different masks a friend recommended a respiratory physiotherapist who specialised in sleep made an appointment to see her she was meticulous in fitting me with a mask she suggested the nasal pillow mask I said no way I’m a mouth breather - well what do you know I now breath through my nose - my AHI went from 24 to 0.5 events in 3 weeks on a relatively low pressure 6.4 - I was close to throwing in the towel glad I persisted and saw this wonderful woman in Sydney who tweaked the settings on my cpap machine turned off the ramp increased the starting pressure from 4 to 5, changed the tubing to warm air made all the difference

Thank you for your videos. I have been on my cpap for almost 3 years never knew the pressure of air can go high as 50 no one told me this part. I am at pressure 10 and I feel like it's to much. Just recently someone told me that I could turn down the pressure as I sleep it would rise to the set pressure of 10. I like that much better. Also I have a new and mask with a heated tube. I did look at your other video on how to adjust the temperature. Hopefully no dry mouth. Thank you.

thanks man. I am 35 and just starting out on cpap therapy. I have always been a snorer even 15 years ago when I was in the Air Force and fit, drove my room mates crazy. My wife has been a saint and put up with it for 10 years but she told me she can deal with snoring but it scares her when I stop breathing for 20-60 seconds and then gasp for air like I am drowning.
I have narrow nasal passages and the first mask I tried Philips Respironics DreamWear really pushed on my sinus pressure points and didnt let me open my mouth comfortably. I swapped to the vitera full face and it is a bit better, but it is very unnatural feeling breathing out against the pressure and I am still struggling/learning. But this video has given me some renewed positive perspective, thanks for that.

Hey brother, thanks for sharing your experience! Certainly sounds like you've got a great wife there so hold onto her. Yeah it's a real struggle in the beginning mate. Hit me up if you ever need any help Nick!

Hi Layna, yeah it can be very difficult in the beginning which is why is suggest starting at a nice low pressure and gradually increasing it as you get more comfortable. Stick with it and just keep persisting and your breathing will get use to it over a bit of time. Best of luck

Hey Layla. I am just adding to what you’re saying in that I experienced the same feelings using the CPAP. I had a full face mask that covered both my nose and all the way up to the bridge of my nose - can you say anxiety!! I didn’t sleep well for a week. I called my doctor, and he reviewed the data finding I now have treatment emergent central sleep apnea. At his point, he ordered an ASV machine, which I’ve used every day for almost a month. Plus, I switched to a mask that covered my mouth and my nostrils - much better. Hopefully, in the last six months, you’ve found some relief and are doing well. Best Regards.

I will bear in mind your comments if I find it a struggle at any time. One thing's for sure... it would be terrific to have a restful nights sleep for a change.
I found it quite amusing that you seemed to feel the need to add English subtitles to the vid... OK, you have a slight touch of Strine for your accent, but I can assure you than any English speaking person wold understand you 100! 😃

@@Thoushaltplaymore 😊 interestingly I was discussing this subject with an Aussie a couple of weeks ago and he told me that a lot of people seem to have problems with the accent, and he thought the subtitles were a useful addition. For a great proportion of my working life I dealt with Australia a lot, so maybe I’m just used to it. I can certainly understand them more easily than a broad Geordie accent!

Thank you so much for posting these tips. I am about to use my machine tonight and I have a Mask that fits below my nose! I will start at a pressure of 5 and go from there. I was not aware that I would be increasing etc but that makes sense once my therapist has had a chance to look at my results.
I am actually quite looking forward to this. I am only a Moderate Sleep Apnea patient with 15 Interruptions per hour but they can last as long as 30 seconds. Will be glad to minimize this condition asap. Again, thank you so much! I have subscribed and look forward to learning more about Sleep Apnea Therapy.

You're welcome, a lot of people have issues in the beginning with soreness. Make sure you let the skin fully heal and then you can probably actually just wear it again and the skin will be fine as it toughens up with the mask. If you still have issues you might have to change the mask. Here's a few links to ones that don't hurt the nostrils

Is it the air pressure that makes me feel like I'm being "water boarded with air "

    • @CPAPReviews
      @CPAPReviews  4 года назад +4

it's a tricky one as it's the air pressure that provides the actual therapy so we do need some air pressure however i always suggest starting the therapy pressure very low and gradually increasing it over time even if it provides less control of the sleep apnea. Also make sure that your pressure relief settings IE CFLEX, EPR etc is at the highest level. Normally 3 is the highest. Best wishes :-)
