      Hey Nicko,
      You had a video about portable CPAPs and batteries and stuff. You mentioned something about the ResMed AirSense10 and running it on a power bank...but none of the links would open for me. Can you do a more detailed video about running this machine on a battery? I am thinking about getting one of those much larger-capacity camping-style batteries and would like to run the humidifier with it, mainly to avoid needing to but new hoses, masks, humidity filters, and adapters. Thanks Bro!

      Hey bud, the recommend pressure range varies for every patient. Not a bad idea to start in auto mode with the pressure min and max set to 4-20cm and then once you have a weeks worth of data you can start to reduce that range and bring your pressure min up closer to the median pressure statistic. Just found your video's, and they are very helpful! I do have an issue with my Airsense 10 and the Humidity. But I am not sure where the problem is actually stemming from. For the past several months, I've been having issues sleeping as the air is now too dry. I have the humidity setting set to MAX humidity (just watched your video on this and will plan to buy the heated hose), I fill the water chamber each night, and almost all of the water is gone each morning. Also, the CPAP shows that I have bad 'seal' each morning. I've replaced everything, except the machine, I even changed to the new AirFit F40 (from the AirFit F20 - assumed the foam may have been the cause of the dry air). I don't think the issue is with my mask, sure it will shift and leak air but I adjust it and it seems fine. I think the 'leak' may be internal to the machine. Any suggestions on what to look for or try? Very hard to get any rest with a dry nose\mouth each night, just looking for suggestions. I've had this machine for several years, but even with co-pay to replace the machine is close to $2k...really hoping it is something simple.

  • @beachbumEd

    Having been on CPAP for some 20 years, It took me a loooong time to find the optimal settings. I now make slight adjustments depending on the situations. Summer = dry atmosphere = increase humidity level and drop tube temp a degree or so. Winter is the opposite.
    One thing you kind of mist (pun intended) is keeping the tank water level (always using distilled / demineralised water) at max before bed. Otherwise you end up with an empty tank and potentially damage to the tank internal surfaces.
    If I don’t have access to demin water - such as in indo or such, I generally also add a squeeze of lime juice to neutralise the calcium buildup.

Just switched to the heated tubing and boy, what a difference. Experienced dry mouth, rainout too much humidity, too little humidity and you name it. Three nights with the heated tubing and all is well. First night on "auto" and the last two on "manual". Got it set perfectly. Thanks for all you do and keep it going.

I have been struggling with nasal congestion eversince i started cpap therapy and just didnt know the wrong settings on cpap was causing it. I wish my clinician 7 years ago explained even a tiny bit of this to me. All he said was use humidifier if you feel dryness in mouth in the morning..i didn't even know what that meant and assumed it means i'd be waking up thirsty or with a dry mouth, which i didnt so never really bothered with the humidifier. Thank you so much for explaining it all in depth. Will start using the humidifier and will get a heated tubing and hopefully will get rid of these clogged nostrils.

      I had that problem even though I'm on a full face mask. I have figured out that starting to use flonase (OTC steroid nasal spray - I checked with my dr first, it can cause problems for people with some conditions or mixed with some meds), and I wear adhesive nasal opening strips for peope who snore at night. That allows the mask to seal better on my nose with a deviated septum. It's not always because of mouth breathing. Sometimes it's just the mask not sealing right.

  • @douglasb1789
    @douglasb1789 11 месяцев назад +2

    Nicko, excellent video.
    Based my experience there is one other factor to consider, and that is leak rate. Based on my experience, these humidity's are only reached based on a some (normal) level of leak. If your leak rate is high, this results in a large flow of air through the cpap, and two things can happen. One is the humidity can be very low, almost none if the flow is high enough. This is caused because the heating plate can only get so hot, and this only evaporates a limited amount of water so if there is very high flow, it will get relatively very low additional moisture. Secondly, if this situation continues long enough, you will run out of water in your reservoir.
    So if people have higher leak rates, they need to address this to control the humidity. When I develop higher leak rates for whatever reason, I wake up with desert mouth. I guess the only solution to this is fix leaks, but having 100% low leak may be difficult.

    Just gotta throw this in here - not all "clinicians" are built the same in every country. As an example, in Canada, Respiratory Therapists are highly trained in absolute and relative humidity concepts. This is because these concepts apply in critical care, where we primarily work. When you get rainout in ventilator tubes, you risk aspiration pneumonia / Pseudomonas proliferation, both of which can be life-threatening for patients. For my more savvy patients, I ALWAYS review Manual control and the relationship between temperature and absolute humidity levels.
    Tl;dr: let's not shit on all the clinicians who do this for a living for views and likes. Although you are right, most are just "salespeople" and have no sweet clue, there are still some good ones out there.

    • @bloodgain
      @bloodgain 11 месяцев назад

      Do RTs in Canada work in sleep medicine? Because I'd bet RTs in the US are trained in this, too (I could ask one of my RT friends to confirm), but IME, _sleep_ clinicians don't understand the tech nearly as well as the medicine/biology side of it. I could see the benefit of having an RT consult the patient when they receive a CPAP, so if Canada does that, I'm impressed.

    i really needed this info as i have worse air swallowing when it's dry - or at least i notice it more when my throat is dry and it prevents me from falling asleep. so i cranked up the humidity last night and got rain out. of course i didn't know that i had the device too high relative to my bed, so now i know that. i also didn't realize that for me, the heated tube is essential given this situation. again thank you so much and these graphs are amazing and your explanations are fabulous. you have some real mojo for this stuff and i hugely thank and appreciate you.

    HI Nick....I have appreciated many of your videos over the years, and find your information invaluable to my understanding of how my airsense 10 works and getting the most out of it...for that many thanks. I'm not happy however with the fact that you would post half of a two part series that seems like a critical issue behind a paywall, thus leaving people hanging with parts of the information necessary to get the best out of their treatment. I understand the need to fund projects like yours and agree with soliciting funds by various means to do that, but I am not in favor of only giving half of the information necessary to make informed decision. Doing that put peoples health and equipment at risk when you leave those that can't afford, or don't want to pay for a subscription to discover further on the issue of humidification (for example) through experimentation.
    So I take it then that any further educational content is going to be behind a paywall (which is totally understandable) and want to say thanks for the contribution you've made to my (and others I am sure) understanding of cpap and the of same, and wish u and the business all the best.

    Interesting video Nicko, a bit contrary to my experience. I get the most water consumption on Auto, which means it delivers more humidity than manual 0-4 (haven't tried anything over 4 on manual). My problem is not rainout, it is running out of water in the reservoir (AirSense 10). Yesterday I started with an overly full reservoir and 7 1/2 hours later I woke up with 1 mm of water left in it. I have the tube temp at 84F (10 degrees F over the room temperature). At manual 2, I normally run 1/2 tank per night. Manual 4, just over 2/3 tank.

    • @CPAPReviews
      @CPAPReviews  11 месяцев назад

      Hey mate, tube air temp of 84f with climate control on Auto will deliver 24mg/L humidity, which is the same as level 4 in manual mode, but I imagine it's not an exact science when the numbers come from ResMed. ResMed chambers running dry is a very common complaint, unfortunately. My mate Seb made a product that auto-refills the chamber if it runs dry. It's called the CSpring2 . Check it out

    Your site is awesome. I learned more in 1 hour watching a few of your tutorials than my doctor or therapy technician have in 3 years. my Resmed Airsense 10 machine is about 3 years old (2021) and worked great until about 4 months ago when I started waking up with very dry mouth. I turn humidity level to max setting and it helps but tube fills with water. So I assume my heated hose is not working. I have replaced the hose but still don't see any options to increase hose temp. When I hook up my ClimiteAir heated hose on my Resmed Airsense 10, the options screen does not show "climiateair" or "tube temperature" options in the menu. The only option is humidity level. The menu is unchanged from what is shown when no tube is connected. I have tried 3 different hoses. Is my machine defective? What advise would you have.

  • @Resist4
    @Resist4 11 месяцев назад +1

    This is exactly what I have been experiencing with my machine. It's winter here, but I don't live in snow country however lately it has been in the 30's-40's at night and I don't want to turn on the heat in my house yet. So my CPAP machine has been building up condensation in the tube, so I guess I need to turn down the humidity level. I even have a tube holder, so it's above my head and my machine is lower than my head yet still getting some condensation but not as much as I used to before having the tube hold. I don't have a heated tube, I should try and see if my insurance will cover this. But I do have a tube cover, that I probably should put on for the winter. Lately I've been waking up to a dry mouth. I use Nasal Pillows and haven't mouth breathed since using them, so I'm not sure why my mouth has been dry lately as it never used to.

    I tried manual settings a while back but discovered "rain out" could occur if condtions changed even inside my own home sometimes. The next problem is traveling because you never know what conditions are like at your destination and then you have to spend time dialing in settings which is a pain. Unless you need extreme amounts of humidity automatic mode for humidty and temperature works great and the machine adapts to many conditions. I've even used my airsense 10 autoset at below freezing air temps during camping trips and it still manages to do a good job delivering warmed to me without rain out occuring in the main air tube.
