      Review on the full face mask were very negative...and over the top IMHO for someone who had skin cancer on my nose....and extreme sensitivity on having any cpap mask directly contacting the nose or bridge area on my face. Being a freckled face fair skinned woman, having skin cancer surgery on my nose...was frightening for me in my 50's.

    When I first started with a CPAP, I used a full face mask. It was cumbersome, but while going to sleep, I pretended I was a fighter pilot wearing a oxygen mask. That helped me get used to it. After many years of CPAP use. I now use nasal pillows. They seem to be the best for me as my pressure isn't too high.

    Thank you for posting this video. I have been using a cpap machine faithfully for 17-18 yrs. The therapy works with the proper support & guidance of a certified pulmonologist and the info contained in this video is quite accurate. I know "many" people that were on nightly cpap therapy in the past but eventually went off it. In most cases, it was because they simply gave up too easily and refused to acknowledge and accept that a few adjustments to the machine's settings and/or a different type of cpap mask may have been needed in order to achieve maximum personal comfort & the longterm health benefits of nightly cpap therapy.
    Thanks again for posting your many helpful videos. Greatly appreciated! Stay safe out there + I am looking forward to hearing more from you 🙃🙂

    I started with the nose pillows mask and it drove me crazy trying to get a good fit so it didn’t leak. It sometimes took me 30-40 minutes of constantly adjusting it before it wouldn’t leak. Some nights I would get so frustrated I would give up and sleep without it.
    I just switched to a nose cradle mask and I love it. It seals the first time almost every time and even then it only takes a slight adjustment to get it to seal correctly. BTW, I do have a mustache!

  • @peterwhite5948

    Nice clear and simple review of masks. I started with full face and had claustrophobia issues, then tried nasal pillows and had issues with leakage and pressure. I have eventually returned to full face which after lots of fiddling fits well. I have suffered through the sore red nose and am coming out the other side. I must admit I still hate the whole thing, but I guess I am saving a few brain cells for the rest of my old age!!

  • @steveliberman3000
    @steveliberman3000 3 года назад +24

    I think it's essential that the hose comes out the top of your head and NOT out of your face. This lets you roll freely from side to side without losing seal. The straps on my nasal cradle are actually tubes that allow air flow on either side, so air flow is not blocked by cheek to pillow compression.

    • @tensacross
      @tensacross 2 года назад +6

      I tried the Phillips and resmed pillows that come out the top of the head but I found when the side of my head was in the pillow it would block half the air coming in and out and I couldnt breathe as easily. they're also noisy.

      @@darlenedrivera165 If you have "pillows," you might not have the same kind. My nose piece doesn't have two pillows that fit into nostrils, it's one piece that goes across bellow my nose. As long as I don't tighten the back strap too much there is no discomfort.

    Several years ago I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea. During a trial period with a CPAP machine I tried several different masks. I had ruled our Nasal Pillows because I thought that my constant issued with hay fever would make them impractical. After finding I couldn't tolerate the various full face masks I did try the nasal pillows . . . . and have never looked back! My machine is actually a Bi-Pap. As I understand it, it adjusts to a stronger air pressure when it detects that I haven't breathed out. This gets progressively stronger the longer I fail to breath out . . . . . so when I have pulled the mask off and forgotten to turn the machine off, I come back into the room to hear that air being pushed through the mask. When I did the initial in-hospital sleep study and then went to see the specialist for the follow-up visit, my test results were so bad that they set me up with a machine to take home to try it out, rather than arrange to re-do the sleep study, using the machine to determine that they had the correct settings. (So much for friends and family telling me that I was always tired because of the time that I went to bed . . . . I maintained that 6 hours sleep is 6 hours sleep, whether it be from 10pm to 4am, or from 4am to 10am.)

    I *LOVE* my hybrid mask! It’s very comfortable and provides a good seal for me. I just had a slight issue with having my head gear too tight to begin with and it would pull my chin back to where my lips would open at night & I’d drool on myself. But after I talked with my sleep coach, I loosened it & it’s been good so far. I get a good seal, but mine also just has one large opening for the nostrils instead of being divided under my septum. I don’t think I could’ve dealt with the first nasal pillows because the plain oxygen tube they’d put on & up my nose in hospitals when I needed surgeries would irritate me with how they shot air right up my nose. I’d usually pull them out and rotate the nasal prongs to blow just below my nose. I also have a tendency to mouth breathe, so my hybrid mask has been awesome. So far, after adjusting the head gear, it’s held my mouth closed. I’ll further get some help with a chin strap that’s being delivered.
    But regardless, it’s nice to actually sleep again and feel alive when I wake up instead of feeling like going straight back to bed after breakfast!

    • @paulcompton7861
      @paulcompton7861 2 года назад

      @@louisbrucetatarsky9817 None I'm afraid. You just have to fiddle with it, and then fiddle again, then fiddle again!
      My bed has a 'gate style' headboard and I fed the hose in through that with a twist around a bar.
      One good tip is that if you are a bit stuffy, put some Vics Vapor Rub on a folded paper hand towel and set it near the air intake on the machine!
      I didn't continue with it after two one month trials, one principle reason was that I couldn't find a way to keep my mouth shut and the face type mask wouldn't seal against my weird head shape. Also I simple didn't think it gave me enough benefit for the buck as the machine was waking me up etc, and I didn't like the idea of spending all that money to give Res Med my personal information to help them with marketing. If I'd been a severe case, perhaps worth it; but in my case, no.

I need quality sleep to have a quality life. I plan everything around whether or not I can have sufficient time to try and sleep, even on Lunesta. I am very cautious about my commitments, even fun ones because I don't know how I might feel. I was so relieved with the diagnosis and so excited to get my real life back! I went to basically zero leaks, almost zero events, and perfect sleep. For some reason when it starts going through my nose my tongue (the back part) automatically blocks the air from my mouth. Ican open my mouth all the way had still have zero leaks. I have to forcefully push my tongue forward to get air to flow through my mouth. IT's amazing. People should try it. Even "mouth breathers".

    Back in 2008, I had skin cancer surgery and plastic surgery on the ridge of my nose; I could not even stand eyeglasses or getting my eyes tested for over a year due to my nose sensitivity. In 2017, I was approved for a cpap machine for the first time due to my severe sleep apnea. I still had bridge and ridge of my nose sensitivity so I preferred a mask option not touching those areas. I preferred the full face mask (that looked like a fireman's mask) so to have no direct pressure in my nose area. After 6 months, I found the full face mask was too warm for me since so much of my face was hidden under the mask. Eventually, I preferred the Dreamware nasal mask (not the nose pillows) as the most comfortable for me. I have had 99.9% compliance with my cpap for the past 5 years averaging 9 hours per night. The minimalistic Dreamware nasal shelf, that is just below the nose, is the most comfortable mask I have found. The swivel hose connection on the top of the head is ideal so to allow you to sleep on either side or back with no bulkiness affecting the face.

    Oh gosh thank you I just watched many of your videos. You are such a good instructor. Trying to watch all this when you're new and most of the sales people don't know what they're talking about. It's all surface. I mean you get into the nitty gritty. I finally understand a few things. My son has pulmonary artery hypertension with apnea and so it's been a difficult road in many ways. Especially trying to understand these different masks and machines. Anyway he is on the nasal pillow and is doing much better as for his comfort. We don't know how to read or what is normal pressure that you talk about yet I'm sure you have it in here somewhere. He feels like abdominal pain though I think is from what you were talking about the air. The cardiology says she doesn't know what it is. And the pulmonary doctor said he doesn't know. It's just perplexing he feels like he's full all the time and that sounds like air bloating to me. I'm going to be watching more and trying to learn more. He's just got his portable concentrator respironics. It sucks six or seven pounds it's heavy I thought they had some that you could wear on your back and be a little more mobile. I did donate and I'll try to donate and each one I watch. Thank you you are awesome.

Recently I went from a 7 strength to a 10 per sleep doctor and know I know of aerophagia or air swallowing, air building up in your stomach by force. Burping and farting. It's hard to deal with. This is my 3rd month and I'm already dependent on cpap to sleep. I tried to nap and I keep waking myself up. Can't sleep without the machine, full dependence. Hi Jeremiah, thanks for your sharing your experience. Going from 7 straight up to 10 is a 30% increase and quite a big jump. If i was your 'sleep doctor' i would have gradually increased you 1cm of pressure at a time over a few months to help your body get use to the added pressure and help your chest and diaphragm muscles adapt to the increase in pressure. 95"% of these so called sleep doctors have no idea so do your own research, learn how to read your own sleep data and then learn how to adjust your equipment for yourself. I do a lot of videos on this stuff. Best wishes

      @@CPAPReviews I agree! The whole thing is out of control in America. One night of sleep study just isn't enough. My initial sleep study night showed my PCP 5.4 events per hour. She labeled me as not having apnea. A while at home on a cpap showed I have up 10 events per hour even while on a cpap. It's become a huge money run and is out of control. For instance a mask from resmed f30 probably cost $2 to $5 make yet they charge $100 plus. It's a sick world. Looking for their next victim to profit off of. Many people struggle 2 weeks in. It can sometimes take months to get use to CPAP therapy. Increase the humidification for he 'cold burns' and set a max limit on the device while you are getting use to it to stop it getting too high while you are starting out. Over time you can increase the pressure but keep it low in the beginning while you are getting use to it. Cheers

      When I first started CPAP - maybe 15 years ago? - I had this problem badly. Pressure was 15 - rather high. I used a chin strap and hated hated hated it it was so unwieldy - get up to go to the bathroom and you had to unwrap then rewrap. Plus uncomfortable. BUT! I needed the CPAP so I stuck with it. And then after about 5 months I forgot it one night and went to sleep without it. And it turned out sometime in that 5 months my brain had learned to keep my darn mouth shut at night even with the CPAP! Haven't used the chin strap since, nor anything else, nor ever needed it. Stick with it then every month or so see if you still need it ...

Plus you had to go to a provider to get fitted, there weren't youtube videos and internet stores for supplies and so on. Full face masks existed but were awfully clunky and heavy - my provider didn't even offer it to me. Hybrid didn't exist AFAIK. I think there might have been nasal pillows but you couldn't use it at 15. Boy, when I later discovered air cushion (vs. the gel cushion, which itself was an improvement over the other heavy gear) and then nasal masks I was happy I had learned to sleep with CPAP and my mouth firmly shut.

    I have been using a full face mask (covers nose and mouth) for several years AND still wake up often with an arid mouth where I have to rewet the inside of my mouth. I have talked to my doctors about this and tried many types of straps to hold my mouth closed during the night. They don't work. They slip off or just are not strong enough. And then that's another problem with chin straps they are either TOO TIGHT and I can't stand the tightness to wear them or if adjustable can not find the right balance. They also will wear out fairly quickly. I do breathe thru my nose as I drift off but during the night I MUST begin breathing thru my mouth. Any suggestion?

    • @CPAPReviews

      Hi Erik, great question! It certainly does. When ever your mouth isn't sealed by a mask variety then you need to be breathing exclusively through your nose (no mouth breathing) You can only breathe through your mouth if it is covered by a mask. Nothing is going to happen to you if you open your mouth to take a breath but it will just feel weird and uncomfortable to do so. Thanks again :)

    • @CPAPReviews
      @CPAPReviews  4 года назад +5

      G'day Nick, this is actually really common and one problem i have never managed to find a solution for. Some machine have little alarms that go off it they take the mask off but i find that's pretty frustrating. If it was me i'd probably either play around with the pressure levels to see if that makes a difference. You could potentially be taking the mask off because either there's not enough air coming in or potentially too much air coming in. I think if you're managing to get over 4 hours a night with the gear you're probably going to be doing pretty well in the long term. It's a great question though and a very common problem. Cheers

      Hi Nick! I have the same mask and the same problem. In my case, when the machine starts the therapy, the cold air blowing into the mask wakes me up after a few hours. I ordered the ClimateAirLine with the heated tube to see if that will fix the problem. I haven’t gotten it yet, but I’ll let you know how it works. Best of luck!

      You’re removing it because it’s not the right mask for you. Switch to the full nasal mask, you won’t regret it.

    • @Simon9Mr
      @Simon9Mr 4 года назад +2

      Are you sure it is you that is removing it and not some nighttime visitor that comes unbidden into your bedroom? Perhaps it's a succubus or a night troll. Or maybe it's just a family member that's screwing around with you. If that's the case, you're going to have to find a more permanent way to secure your mask and headgear. Something the creature/relative can not remove.
      I'd suggest either stapling it to your head OR glueing it on. If you go the stapling route, make sure NOT to use a standard office stapler. The staples aren't long enough. You want to get them in deep. A hardware store or a Home Depot can supply you with a staple gun and really deep staples. An added bonus is that as the blood dries, it forms a crusty bond that seals the mask on even better.
      Alternatively you can hot glue it to your head. I'd recommend a generous bead of hot glue applied to your mask, then quickly press it into your face before it cools. The mask will help stifle the screams of agony you may involuntarily let out so hopefully you won't disturb others trying to sleep. Pleasant dreams!
