    _______________
    Where you are coming from at the top of your backswing dictates (at some level) what you are going to do in your downswing. So, depth in the backswing is important for a variety of reasons. The more depth you have with your hands, the easier it is to shallow the golf club. Depth is good for distance. Depth will also increase your ability to rotate.
    In this video I go over all of the checkpoints you need to get proper depth in your backswing and I demonstrate some feedback drills you can use in your practice.

    fantastic lesson. so important to consistent striking of the ball. Eric is by far the best golf instructor on You Tube. He is a master communicator and can simplify very complex movements in the golf swing. Great coach and teacher.

    You my friend are the best golf instructor I have seen on RUclips. I was a golf instructor / mini tour player for several years after college. I have owned several course records across the U.S. and quit golf in 1999 after shooting a 59 in my last competitive round of golf. Now at the age of 55 i was thinking about taking the game back up . It is refreshing to see a guy who wants to put the player in the best positions to consistently make a fundamental golf swing. Yes, we know there many many tour players who do not get into some of these positions but for the average JOE you hit the nail on the head with each of the videos I have watched. GREAT JOB.

    Eric, absolutely loving your lessons. Your instructions are so clear, simple and concise. When I tried to bump my right thigh with the handle...OMG it seemed impossible! Just showed how much of a correction I needed to do. I feel like for the first time, I'm slotting the club in an ideal position. Thank you for your priceless lessons!

    Another great video. Getting depth now, but still coming down steep at times. I’ll try keeping the hands back and see if that helps shallow the club. Enjoying all the videos.

    Eric - there's a lot of instruction out there saying you need to keep your hands "in front of your chest" and avoid "pinning your lead arm against your chest" at top of backswing. How do you reconcile the desire for more hand depth with these concepts, which to a layperson seem contradictory? Thanks, and another great video! Love finding something from you on pretty much any topic I search for.

      Thank you!
      Probably more to this answer that I can give here in a simple comment....but if you look through more of our backswing videos you'll see all the details :)
      You want to get DEPTH.....without over doing it.
      Just like you want to have SOME ice cream....but not the whole pint.
      One beer-----not 20.
      Some can be good but of course you can OVER DO anything.
      A lot of the depth comes from the body rotation....only A LITTLE from the arms going across body

    Another great lesson, Eric. Wonderful explanation of exactly what depth is and why it's so important. I've been working in front of a mirror to get the feedback on exactly where I am, and ingraining the feeling of where I need to be. Always felt I might not have the flexibility to get enough depth, but with your right leg/hip video in particular, I now can rotate enough to get more shoulder turn and arm position, to actually get the club in a much better position to make the downswing better and easier. (Sorry for the run-on sentence lol) Is it weird to say, I can almost *feel* it, even though the swing is so fast, as the club is coming down that I'm going to make good contact even before it happens (as long as I hit the proper positions and checkpoints that is)? It's definitely a good feeling! Thank you once again!👍🏻

    I found that keeping the left arm in tight on the pectoral helped -- but I also had to keep my knee flexion so that my right elbow didn't get stuck -- it actually helped to think of my right elbow leading through the hitting area. Still working on it. Never give up, never give in...

    I enjoyed this video, thanks Eric. Not so sure about the props...but the checkpoint positions are great. Of course. it is very difficult to see what you are doing because angles can be very deceptive and your practice swing is not the same as the real thing - so I'm told. Even camera angles can deceptive if the camera is not exactly in the right position. All said and done your videos are the best I've seen on the web - keep it up.

    Can you explain something. You said in one video that it’s important to get lead arm depth and maintain it in the downswing and in this video you say get the depth and then rotate
    . How do you rotate and maintain the depth?
    Thanks

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 года назад

      Hey-thanks for the message and question!
      The goal is to hit checkpoints.
      The checkpoint would be roughly to have hands in line with right pec/bicep during the backswing from down the line at left arm parallel during backswing.
      The checkpoint would be roughly to have the hands in line with the right right pec/sternum during the downswing at left arm parallel.
      What you need to do to get to those checkpoints is important.
      How much you rotate your body is one effect.
      Generally the more rotation during the backswing the more depth
      Generally the more rotation during the downswing the less depth
      So you have to learn to find a middle ground between your body rotation and arm depth amounts
      Here would be some good checkpoints for club: ruclips.net/video/ivMrpxZAavM/видео.html
      Here would be some good checkpoints for body rotation: ruclips.net/video/ULy3gQuw88Q/видео.html
      Hopefully that explains the macro stuff...

    So easy to be across the line there! How are you keeping that from happening????

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  5 лет назад

      One option is shoulder rotation. More external rotation would be less across the line, more internal rotation would be more across the line.
      Second option would be wrist conditions. More bow(flex) of lead wrist would be less across the line. More cup or extension would be more across the line.....the opposite applies for trail wrist.
      Third option would be forearm rotation. Supination (palm up) of trail arm would be less across the line, pronation more. Opposite for lead arm.
      Those are the main 3.
      There is also hinge amounts (radial deviation) and arm adduction/abduction.
      So could be several things :) Key is finding it and relaying that info in SIMPLE terms :) Would have to see you doing it to say which one for you

    With the arms hanging over the foot line at address, will the longer clubs feel more toe up? I typically have my arms closer to my body and get too much depth.

      No...they shouldn't....because you should be standing taller with the longer clubs

    When will you show a video on transitioning from partial swings to full swings. I am pretty consistent with the inside out swing so long as I do half swings. As soon as I try a full swing, however, I cannot seem to hit the ball flush. Lots and lots of shanks.

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  5 лет назад

      Not much more to do from 1/2 to full
      Swing a little longer, turn a little more.
      Of course there are 1000 micro parts we could discuss and of course I would have to see your swing to say why that happens to you
      What do you want to know specifically?

    How do you get depth on takeaway/backswing while keeping the club shaft on plane relative to the target line?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 года назад

      Hey Chad! Good question...
      Most of it the depth will come from body rotation.
      Most of the club being on plane will come from shoulder/arm/wrist movements..
      Its really quite simple IF I could see a video of what you are currently doing and what you need to do to adjust.....
      Maybe this will help get started. Getting the body motions correct FIRST usually the best idea

    My problem is the opposite: I get too deep behind me and the club gets across the line. This last thing makes the start of the downswing too steep according to my coach, so I guess both mistakes (lack of depth, as explained in the video) and too much depth (like me, crossing the line) lead to difficulty in shallowing the club in the downswing? Thanks

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  3 года назад +1

      You got it! If you are too across the line AND NARROW that generally gets the shaft steep.
      You would need to feel the shaft going much more horizontal to the ground from 1/2 back to the top (lead arm pronation) while keeping lead shoulder down

      Of course a lot of great players have various amounts of depth. Lots of world class players who are more vertical!
      The main point I was hoping to get across if the *average* golfer typically doesn't have enough depth....which can make their ball striking suffer.
      Hope you are well.
