  • We had an extremely fun series of tournaments in Los Angeles in the late '90s.
The 1996 Gilbert Cup was played at the Beverly Hilton, and the participants were J.O. Waldner, Zoran Primorac, Andrzej Grubba, Kim Taek Soo, Jean Michel Saive, Philip Saive, Erik Lindh, Chen Xinhua, Patrick Chila and some of the top players in the US at the time: Cheng Yinghua, Khoa Nguyen and Jim Butler. The prize money generated an entertaining mix of competition and exhibition.

After 13 13 in the third game Waldner was trying to do a little exhibition and started giving Butler slow/high balls but I don't think Butler realized it. I mean, we've all been there before when you are playing someone way out of your league and you don't realize they're just playing lightly to have some fun while you're running at 9,000 rpms trying to win just one out of three points! :-) This was a fun match to watch - thank you for posting!

Dude, Butler was not really out of Waldner's league, he was known by some big upset wins especially when playing or US national team, and he even defeated Waldner himself once.

@@ktosomcosom19 Pretty much everyone has defeated Waldner at least once 'cause he played a gazillion tournaments every year many of them not even ITTF sanctioned and there were too many players with junk rubbers in the 80's.

Jim relies on his bkhand punch too much to make winners, but we all know u need a little bit more then that to hit a ball pass Waldner, its like Pikachu using thundershock attack on Raichu lol

2:00 Waldner says: what about a nice service to have fun
3:14 Waldner says: i will show you what i do to people of the next level
6:51 Butler says: i am desespered i cant do a single fair point, i will do a hard trik like the champs and destroy waldner psycologically
8:30 (until the end) Waldner says: Dont you see that i am going for the show? why so serious?
In fact, just for kidding. Waldner is a real gentleman, he did not say any of that :)

If you've ever met Jimmy or seen him play in real life, you'd know he doesn't really have the play around gene. Every match is the most important match of his life. He's just that kind of guy, lol.

Yeah, Ma Long of today could've killed Waldner of that day quite easily. Many of Waldner's shots are light, almost daring his opponent to attack. Ma Long and Xu Xin would've killed the ball. But as a coach once told me, Waldner was from a different era of table tennis. It isn't that Ma Long and other players are better than Waldner. It is that w/o Waldner, today's players wouldn't have been as good as they are. Waldner helped advance the game into what it is today, because new generations learned from him and adapted his style.

This match was when the ball was made of celluloid and was 38mm. The ball had less speed and more spin. Then, they changed it to 40mm celluloid that had more speed and less spin. In 2014, the ball was changed to plastic which made it even faster. Compare Ma Long's shot speed in 2010 to 2015 or Fan Zhendong's shot speed in 2013 to 2015. The change made a large difference.

Consider Ma Long vs Waldner in 2009. Ma Long was young and very fit, but Waldner wasn't intimidated and was able to give Ma a challenge. Thinking that Waldner played lights shots as if he was simply flat punching the ball like basement amateurs do shows you don't know what you are talking about.

@@saleem2991 not true, the ball wasn’t slower. It was faster, the rallies ended faster so they changed the balls. So the players used to play away from the table more often back in the days than they do nowadays.
Besides it being better for environment. The speed change was just technique change. There was a documentary on the Chinese national team explaining the new way of playing with these balls, closed to the table and always more hitting and more forward movements caused them more injuries.
Examples you can watch malong in his prime before being experienced. German open vs wang hao and chengqi. With the 38mm celluloid ball.

@saleem2991 you couldn't have put it any better. Well said. People shouldn't make comparisons as who was greater than who. The equipment change over the years. The ball.was slower back then the bats were slower. One of the questions we have to ask is did the game change for the better or for the worse. Rallies are still.in general shorter
