      @@yep.fishing hey yep! Haha very odd imho but I guess because it’s water related? Pretty cool to have in hand a reel that I was intrigued about months ago. It does feel like a well polished product. Not quite made in Japan level but it’s quite good. Feels very light due to the mag frame, adjustable and tunable brakes, and oddly the paint job has been very durable. Other reels would have had scratches by this time but I am not seeing any on this. My biggest gripe is the lack of a clicker drag and that price tag haha. Anywho, cheers my friend thanks for sharing that bit of info!

      Hey bass! Haha yes a lot of people didn’t like the appearance of the reel but it’s so unique that I kind of like it 😆. Nakoshop has imported the ff01 cormorant which is a version that is jet black, incorporates a drag clicker, and is much much smoother than the kingfisher. It’s fast become my favorite reel to use and I actually prefer it to the Aldebaran bfs and my daiwa SS air tw. Ffftackle has done a great job with updating and improving on the reel. Thanks for stopping by and cheers my friend!

      Hey Irvin! I can totally agree with you on that. The reel feels quite light and yet very sturdy and is pleasing to hold in the hand. Their marketing material has some info on the crystalline structure of the magnesium alloy that they use and a whole bunch of fancy information on even the paint process. It does feel different from other reels and hasn’t scratched yet. I do hope to see more products from this company as this first reel, from what I see so far, is a solid product. Anywho, thanks so much for chiming in and sharing your thoughts and for the kind words! Cheers my friend!

    Thank you for always checking the handle and handle knob tolerances. It's often overlooked. Very impressive spool weight at 3.45 grams for the trout magnet folks.
    BFS reels don't really benefit from weight reduction of magnesium and rigidity of metal frames. Kastking did the same thing with their Kestrel reel. I wish these CDM manufacturers used graphite instead to keep cost down. I could justify $170 price tag if the reel had a dynamic braking system that can compete with Shimano's FTB. But maybe that 3.45 g world's lightest spool with mag-track brakes is already on par with the FTB brakes. If I'm not mistaken this reel is the new king of light weight spools.
    Thanks again for reviewing these CDM reels. It helps them get the word out about their new products.

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Pacman! My pleasure! A sign of good manufacturing practices is definitely good tolerances which this reel seems to have. I do agree with you that they could have and still can probably manufacture a graphite version of this reel with the same internals and have a very strong product on their hands. I guess they wanted to start off their company with a big bang so to speak and so went with the more exotic frame material. I won’t lie it does feel nice and compared to say the kestrel much nicer in hand. It’s odd as it doesn’t quite feel cold to the touch which might be due to their new fangled painting process. In regards to the brakes, to be completely honest with I actually quite like the magtrax system. IME dynamic braking systems like ftb can be very “finicky”, if not tuned correctly, meaning that they require a very specific casting stroke. Proportional brakes like magtrax seem to give the angler a lot more leeway in casting stroke style. In any case this reel has a lot going for it and some things that are very love or hate. Personally I was not planning on looking at or reviewing this reel but I am glad nakoshop actually reached out. I do hope they’ll consider lowering their price as I think it will help coerce people who are on the fence about this relatively unknown reel. Anyhow, thanks for chiming in and for the kind words! Cheers my friend!

    Looking forward to a tear down and initial impressions. For me the lack of a drag clicker and brake clicker (as picky as that sounds) is enough to turn me off spending 150 USD on this reel. The aesthetics im OK with, though i dont have a rod in mind i would paid it with. Perhaps the mavllos plume.

      Hey yep! Yep haha I’m right there with you. That being said it’s been hard not to be impressed with the reel. They just need to fine tune the price and add a clicker imho… I paired it with the Tsurinoya ajing elf and was super pleased with its performance. Felt like I was lobbing 3-5g lures into oblivion haha, technically true as I launched a few so hard that they really did fly off into oblivion 😂. Cheers my friend!

If they could manage to get a clicker version at or under the current asking price I think they would have a contender for bfs reel of 2023. Considering the specs and what you get for the price it’s a very strong contender and performer. Cheers my friend!

    Why oh why would they not put a drag clicker along with tension knob clicker. I was really wanting to give that reel a go but I have to have noise, lol. Anyway, another fantastic assessment Peter, keep them coming

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hey frank! I hear you. I was also a bit mystified as to why no drag clicker was added… I am not sure but I have suggested that they consider adding one and I am looking for aftermarket options to add one myself and will share in an upcoming video. As far as the spool tension knob goes I am actually in the camp for no clickers for spool tension and on the fence for brake adjustments. The reason is that with spool tension you want very fine tune adjustments to be made. With a clicker the mechanism of the clicker adds just a tiny bit of resistance that can cause you to not be able to make a very fine tune adjustment as easily as without one. It is a similar story for brake adjustments but I also understand the desire to have clicks to get that tactile and audible indication of different setting adjustments. In any case, the reel feels quite premium and I am looking forward to long term testing and sharing the teardown with all of you fine folks. Cheers frank!!!

      @@frankbenvenuto7499 hey frank! Yea… I totally hear you haha. Its not my first choice for a colorway for a reel lol but I feel like it’s so well made that it’ll have a place in the stable. Just needs a tweak, clicker cough cough, and then it’s solid. The price is a bit high I think for people to commit to but if people do decide to indulge their curiosity and get the reel I don’t think they’ll be displeased one bit. This $100-$200 price range is starting to get a number of entries that have pros and cons that will suit a lot of different anglers for sure. It’s a very interesting time to be in the bfs world! Cheers my friend!

    I had wanted to pick one of these up and am still debating it, but the lack of a drag clicker is a let down. I also am not a fan of no tactile feedback on drag adjustments. I like to be able to give it a click or two onr direction or the other on the fly without having to stop what I'm doing to look. I usually even do so right after I reengage the spool after a cast.

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  8 месяцев назад

      Hey Tim! Just to clarify since I think there might be a misunderstanding but the ff01 does have a star drag clicker. When you adjust the star drag there are audible and tactile clicks from the adjustments. However, this reel does not have a normal drag clicker. As the spool slips along the drag washers there is no audible or tactile click from that… That being said, there is a new version of this reel that comes in an all black colorway they’re calling the “cormorant”. This will come with a drag clicker in the reel and a stronger main gear through a hardened coating on the aluminum main gear. Hope that helps clarify things a bit! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and opinions my friend! Cheers!!!

      Hey Fanta! No =\ unfortunately it just didn’t fit for how I like to fish. I would have had to do significant upgrades to make it a reel that would cast super light lures that I enjoy casting sometimes. Also, the reel was quite heavy and it just didn’t feel very refined for the asking price. I am not the biggest fan of the lower end Japanese branded reels as I feel that the value for dollar ratio is much lower than compared to CDM brands. On the flip side, if I want something super refined and premium then no doubt the upper end Japanese reels are the place to go but there to the value to dollar ratio is quite abysmal. @@BFSFISHINGCHANNEL I almost pulled the trigger on the FF01, but just bought an Aldaberan instead from Digitaka. The non clicking drag was kind of a big deal for me and Shimano's & Daiwa's are reliable long term. When it came to actually buying a reel it was between the JDM Daiwa's and Shimano's. I started my baitcasting journey on cheap Lews and Kast King reels. I quickly learned that it's better to invest upfront in your equipment than having to replace it every year, because in the long run you're not really saving money. I'll most likely get a decade of hard use out of the BFS Aldaberan, which is totally worth it.

      @@davebonham798 hey Dave! Haha no worries at all. Thanks for answering as it really helps narrow things down a bit for sure. I think you ask a good question and imho I find that budget tackle works very well and will perform for you. What you get when you start spending more is build quality and a more polished and premium feel. Nowadays, I think you’re getting diminishing returns on performance when you start getting into the higher priced gear but ofc it’s not an end all be all statement as some higher priced gear outshines budget gear in some areas. If you’re not looking to break the bank but get good performance I’d look at any of the dark wolf ultra variants for reels with the Soloking Acura being the smoothest of the bunch imho. It comes in around $50-60 and can be had with a double spool option. As for rods, I’d look at a Tsurinoya Dexterity 2 or Tsurinoya Dragon 2. If you want to save a bit you can go more budget and look at the Acehawk CU Double or Acehawk AG Venom rods. If you want some distance and don’t mind a 7.5’ rod I highly recommend checking out the Tsurinoya elf ajing. Just picked one up and I am super impressed and pleased with the purchase.
