You're not supposed to C-Clamp the rear piston. You can do that with front pads, rear pads are supposed to be rotated in. Thats why it has notches on the face of the piston.... Kinda cringed watching that. But it's a common mistake, don't feel terrible.

"NEAR DEATH CRASH WITH FIREBALL AND EXPLOSIVE TOTAL LOSS AVOIDED by changing BRAKE PADS in TIMELY MANNER!"
Good job, sir... the only other item worth mentioning... if you've added brake fluid at some point before the pads are changed the level in the master cylinder will overflow as the pistons are pushed back in with the c-clamps. I always pop the hood and remove the master cylinder cap just in case the system isnt vented and check the level before retracting the pistons. In a pinch, you can remove excess fluid with a old windex pump sprayer

  • @TOMOFONO

As others have mentioned, it looks like this caliper piston is supposed to be rotated clockwise in to retract. Calipers like this usually incorporate the parking brake mechanism so it is different. I don't know if you damaged it.

Yeah.....made that mistake with the pads on my Hyundai when I did the first pad replacement. When I saw the notches in the Mini's brake piston, I thought it was gonna be the type where you compress AND screw the piston back in at the same time (Nissan & Hyundai for example). Dodged a p.i.t.a. step right there. Great vid, Dan.

No, as long as you take care of a Mini and can find one that has everything done they are great. I pulled the trigger on a 2011 R56S that was totaled and rebuilt it. Then my dad bought an R53S and it has held up very well with a lot of modifications, it now has a cam, 550cc injectors, Miltek exhaust, Wilwood 6 piston brakes, and a bunch of other small stuff and its the most fun car I have ever driven!

I bought my 16-year-old daughter a red with black roof, John Cooper Works, Mini Cooper with black wheels, with an all-around air-dam package and a lot of carbon fiber trim for her first car because that is what she told me she would like. I called it driveway candy because it was so darn cute. She loved that car.... But after a long business trip, I come home and there was a brand new black shiny Honda Civic on the driveway and no Mini? I asked what happened to the Mini, thinking an accident, but thankfully that wasn't the case. My now 18-year daughter tells me, the Mini was too unreliable and she needed a car she could count on to start every morning. She had taken it back to the dealer several times for Timing Chain issues before those issues were declared a full-blown recall. But they could never seem to get it right. So my 18-year daughter decided to trade in the car of her dreams, the car she loved for something reliable and she bought a Civic, fully loaded of course. And drove the Civic round trip from Chicago to Los Angeles twice. We both still think about and miss the cool, little black over red Mini every time we see another Mini on the road, but she never regrets trading it in!!!!

Thanks for this vid. I have the same brake setup on my i8. I also saw the comment on the c-clamp, so I'll use that advice. One suggestion: If you are replacing pads that often, buy them from FCPeuro. They have a lifetime guarantee on everything, meaning after you buy a part from them, once it wears out, buy a new part to replace it, send the old worn one back and they refund you 100%. They even do this for oil and filters! They sell OEM or aftermarket, so you're not getting sub-par parts. Apparently, that was different years ago, but they listened to customers and offer lifetime guarantee on everything they sell. I had only heard about this recently on bimmerpost, but that's where I'm going to start going for all my wear items. www.fcpeuro.com/page/lifetime-guarantee
